Wen Shi was a panguan who excelled in puppetry and who was said to be the strongest practitioner of the puppetry line of cultivation - that is, if one overlooks his master. Stoic and cold, Wen Shi was rumored to be a dangerous entity, feared by the people around him. His master, Chen Budao, found Wen Shi amidst a warzone, where he had absorbed the grievances and resentment from the dead. He gave Wen Shi the chance to train under him and was more than tolerant of Wen Shi’s oddities. He even taught Wen Shi how to dispel the negative resentment - but at the cost of his own life.

The story starts with Wen Shi coming back from the dead. He has escaped the cycle of reincarnation and every time he returned, he was picked up by generations of his disciples. Upon picking him up, Wen Shi’s current disciple - Shen Qiao - died, leaving him with a clueless heir - Xia Qiao. With little leftover in terms of money, Wen Shi and Xia Qiao had to find other means of obtaining money, including leasing out a room to a new tenant: Xie Wen. But something seems pretty fishy about Xie Wen’s character…

During Shen Qiao’s funeral procession, they entered their first ‘Cage’, or illusions straddling reality created from the lingering grievances/obsession/resentment of the deceased. It is a Panguan’s job to resolve these Cages and assist the deceased in departing peacefully. 

The rest of the plot follows Wen Shi and his new tenant Xie Wen and disciple Xia Qiao through different Cages. All of the Cages are tied together by a larger mystery: What happened to Chen Budao all those years ago? Why was Wen Shi capable of returning from the dead? What happened to all of Chen Budao’s other disciples? And what role did the current strongest cultivator family - the Zhang Family - played in all of these?

Highlights:

I like the mystery, it certainly keeps me up trying to figure out the relationships between all of the characters. The touch of angst is really nice and some of the Cages were really bittersweet :’) Do note though, the angst can drag on quite a bit near the end, but it does make the happy ending much sweeter <3

I actually like how the MC remains stoic throughout most of the book. It’s refreshing to see an MC that has a less charismatic personality but still remains kind in his actions. 

The side characters are also pretty fun: I love how Zhou Yun and Bu Ning shared the same body, so they often ended up switching possession of the body constantly as they converse with one another. Also, Zhou Yun likes to do ridiculous stuff and leave it to Bu Ning to deal with the consequences xDD

the very complicated thing where Chen Budao’s work is to relieve people of their suffering and so he takes in the child stuck with bearing all the suffering of a slaughtered city. and of course he takes care of the child and cheers the child up when he is sad. of course Chen Budao takes the child’s undue suffering onto himself without letting the child know. So this is what Wen Shi is left with: the savior of the world and his caretaker. All of Chen Budao’s unbearable kindness has saved him more times than he can count but that’s not all he wants. It’s all he’ll take though, if being student and child is all that’s available to him, he’ll take it if he can keep trailing after Chen Budao.
