CDs are great don’t get me wrong, use them, collect them, it’s all good. I say this as someone who has collected 100s of CDs. They are my favourite mass-produced format. But they are not necessary for archival purposes, and they’re certainly not necessary for stopping The Man taking your tunes off you. Locally stored digital music libraries do the trick just the same. It would take an immense audio library to not fit on a single modern hard drive, and archives on redundant hard drives may take your drive count up to maybe 3. If you have files free of DRM, a couple of well maintained redundant backups like this would be a safer future-proof solution than a burnt CD, which will eventually succumb to damage, and is fundamentally less sturdy than a mass produced one due to the techniques used to store the data (I.e.: data stamped onto metallic foil vs. data stored by exposing an ink layer to a burning laser). With pure digital storage, libraries and their backups can be created and duplicated with very little effort, even just with a few clicks. All CDs take more effort to replace than the duplication of a healthy hard drive, and if you have a DRM free file on that drive no company can take it off you without physically coming to your home and taking the drive out of your hands or compelling you with the law for some reason. That is the same protection afforded to physically bound media.
A downside to CDs is that if you already have a high quality audio file, one that is PCM encoded at greater than 44.1kHz sampling rate and greater than 16-bit, the audio CD standard requires a sacrifice in quality (yes there are other standards, but they demand equipment other than your typical living room Hi-Fi, car CD player or computer disc drive). By the same token, if you have an inferior file like a 128kbps MP3, and you intend to burn it in a format that all CD players can read, that required conversion to PCM just adds bloat to the files for no good reason. The data lost from the initial MP3 conversion never comes back. If you have MP3s only, you can make an MP3-CD but they aren’t always compatible with every player, and if your player has a USB port, there are no immediate quality or ease of use benefits over a cheap USB stick. The best time to use a CD is when you’ve bought one mass manufactured, and when the audio is already 44.1k/16-bit, no greater, no less.

26 March 2023: Songs of Pain, Daniel Johnston. (2023 Eternal Yip Eye/BMG expanded reissue of 1981 self-released cassette)
Troubled and complex songwriter and artist Daniel Johnston already had a bit of a cottage industry run by family members before his 2019 death, but since that there has been a somewhat steady stream of products appearing, though when it’s quality reissues of his more important works I can’t complain. His debut album, first distributed by hand on homemade copies in his town of Austin, Texas, has never been on vinyl until now. It got a noteworthy and welcome CD issue in 2003  by Dualtone Records as a twofer with his 1983 fourth album More Songs of Pain, the first time either release got any sort of proper, wide distribution, but now people demand vinyl of everything and here we are with that. This expands the 20-track Songs of Pain to include eight bonus tracks (the cover art provides no indication of where the proper album ends and the bonuses begin; you have to read the enclosed booklet for that). Above we see the front cover, hype sticker, and back cover. All the drawings throughout the package were done, of course, by Johnston.
Below is the opened gatefold, which includes entertaining reminiscings about the songs by Johnston’s friend and sometimes band member Tom Gruda, Sr.
Tumblr media
Next we see the front and back of the fairly substantial lyric book, which has more Johnston artwork and ephemera throughout.

Last, each of the four labels has a photo of a young Johnston, and for those familiar with the dramas and anguishes of his life they are somewhat haunting.

Here are some photos of that 2003 CD issue of Songs of Pain and its companion album More Songs of Pain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last, I would have liked to show my cassette copy of Songs of Pain, but it’s in a box in the closet and it would take me long into the wee hours to find it. I didn’t have one of Johnston’s original self-made copies, but rather a copy from Stress Records, an only slightly more put-together arrangement run by Austin’s Jeff Tartakov that started issuing professionally duplicated but still hand-assembled copies of Johnston’s early catalog. These photos are from Discogs, but this is what mine looks like. I’ve no idea why the first photo is tiny and the second enormous; this is how they came.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These Stress releases came in cheap, opaque-plastic cases with hand-glued labels that inevitably started to peel off after some time. The cassettes themselves had handwritten labels by Tartakov. In the first half of the ’90s I spent a fair amount of time in Austin, and I remember seeing baskets of these cassettes on the counter at places like ice-cream parlors, Johnston and Tartakov continuing to spread the word of Johnston’s singular talent. This music is jarringly unpolished, raw, and sometimes unnerving, and I’m sure plenty of people find it beyond the pale, but I think Songs of Pain is an excellent album and I’m glad to have this new expanded reissue.

DBH part 24
It didn't take long for the planing once S, C & Ll put their heads together. They could have asked Mt for help but he was busy with his wedding arrangements. It would take a while till be could come back full time.Yes, even if he is preparing for his own future, E lets him work still, even if he only works half of his usual work routine.
The invitation wer sent out the following week. As expected some of Se's friends declined for family related reasons. S was suspicous over their reasonings but Se could confirm that they were actually true on what they replied back. His friends even send birthday wishes his way and hope that he had a good time at the beach.
At Na's home
A maid came into the living room where Na was currently spenting her time at, watching some medical related topics, and informed her that a letter has been adresses to her.
Na sat up from the couch and took the evelope from her b4 the lady excused herself. It was an invite to Se's bday. Na was perplexed on getting one bc her Ferguson cousin doesnt really celebrate that much, and if then it was bc of his dad. But even then she wouldn't get invited. Not like she was bothered by it.
They werent really close tbw b4 they watched Grave gem together. But it was still a pretty big surprise to her that she got into his party nonetheless.
A few hours go by, Na sat at her garden bench when she got a huge commotion in her friends group chat. To which Lo & Xa were now part of. All of them, exept Xa were invited. The other kids assumed the boy was sad about it but it was the opposite. Xa was afraid of the ocean (early childhood trauma) so he was relieved to stay home. Mi was just surprised to know that Lo got invited as well. She still didnt trust him fully.Na cleared up her confusion, explaining that she and Se talked about Lo after they discussed the new filler episodes they currently aired. They joined a community chat for GG (short for Grave Gem) and somehow she let it slip that Lo is their friend now.
Everyone was shocked, while Lo was secretly happy about it, that Se didnt questioned it and just took her word for it.
They started talking about what to get her cousin. At first it was hard to come up with something. What do hou get a kid who jas dich parents amd barely showes interest towards other ppl.
Na suggested to buy him a givt where all of them pitch in. There was a gaming console with a new RPG of GG and C already put a wish list for the guests. The link was on the QuR code on the letter, so they could see what Se wishes for.
And would you look at that. The game and the console were on top of the list. The site even had a fature to check off the things they got so they wont get a duplicate of anything. Some other stuff included, a pencile set, books, some music Cd's and so on. Some weren't GG themed among other things. But the majority was themed around the cartoon.
The game station + game was not cheap, so Mi & Le were brainstorming on how to get easy money for their share of the money.
Lo still got some of him mom's pocket money for helping around the house and the rest he could help with T, since he had to grinding for his portion the most. T's parents werent exactly what you call elite but their jobs payed the bills.
That only leaves Na for her part. Her friends Believed that she would ask her mom or dad for the rest of the money but she threw their expectations out the window. Saying she is gonna ask for a small side job.
The chat made fun of her, joking that she would just be child labor. She scoffs at their reapones and plans to prove them all that she would work better than the adults at this place she was planning to help out.

Advent Calendar 06: Don't Copy That Floppy!
Greetings, and welcome to Advent Calendar 2022! This year we're being self-indulgent and rambling about video games.
As usual, the Advent Calendar is also a pledge drive. Subscribe to my writing Patreon here by December 15th for at least $5/mo and get an e-card for Ratmas; subscribe for $20/mo (and drop me a mailing address) and you'll get a real paper one!
I hope you're all having a happy winter holiday season. Let the nerd rambling commence!
In the beginning, nobody copy protected software. If you were buying Big Iron like a PDP-11, you got everything you needed to run the computer from the manufacturer. If you wanted something else, you wrote it yourself, and obviously if you wrote it yourself, you could do whatever you wanted with it. Will Crowther charged nothing for ADVENT, and made no effort to keep anyone else from copying or modifying the source code -- culturally, that just wasn't a thing. Anyone who had access to a mainframe or mini-computer to play the game probably also had enough access to program a game themselves, and the notion of keeping them out of ADVENT's guts was ridiculous. The idea of third-party copyrighted commercial software didn't exist until 8-bit microcomputers started landing in the homes of people who didn't care how they worked, and just wanted them to do neat things.
Early copy-protection on computer games, as mentioned, was external. Diskettes (in the US; cassettes elsewhere) were mainly positioned as storage for the end user. They were supposed to be portable, interchangeable, inexpensive, and easily-duplicated. This made them problematic for commercial publishers who didn't want people running off copy after copy of stuff they were trying to make money off of. By packing games with tchotchkes like feelies, code wheels, LensLok prisms, or just a boring serial number, they at least ensured you couldn't get the game to work without some access to the packaging. I remember playing The Island of Dr. Brain and having to grub around in the included EncycloAlmanaTionaryOgraphy to find a password every time I started it up.
Beyond that, there wasn't a lot that could be done, other than prey on the conscience of casual pirates with pieces like the embarrassingly 1990s PSA, "Don't Copy That Floppy". It was roughly as effective as the MPAA's 'would you download a car?' campaign. I guess they didn't anticipate that a lot of the public, given the chance to duplicate a car with no significant effort or impact to the original item, would say 'yes'.
On the console side, piracy was deterred by making the physical media difficult to duplicate. Atari, Nintendo, and Sega all went with a cartridge format, where the program code of each game was permanently embedded on a chip called a ROM (read-only memory) inside the plastic shell. These were not impossible to duplicate; my father worked with EEPROMs (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory -- a kind of ROM you can write and re-write), and we probably had everything we needed to copy the program ROM from a game cartridge in our garage. Few people would have had these, though, and fewer people would have bothered. Even Dad didn't, and Dad was the sort who devoted considerable time and energy into figuring out how to copy Macrovision-protected VHS tapes, strictly because the gatekeeping annoyed him.
Console and computer publishers alike got a reprieve with the advent of CD-ROMs, but it was brief. CD-ROM was in development as far back as 1982; the Yellow Book standard was first published in 1983, and the technology demonstrated at a consumer electronics show in 1984. The Philips CM-100, the first consumer CD-ROM drive, was available in 1986, but the format was not mainstream enough to put games on until the early '90s. The Orange Book standard for writable CD-Rs had already been published, in 1988, and by 1995 you could get a CD burner for under $1000, which was cheap enough to make small-scale piracy a reasonable business venture. I recall the family getting a tricked out 486 PC with CD-ROM multimedia package in about '93 or '94, and my big gift for Christmas '99 was an IDE CD burner for my desktop computer, replaced in 2002 with a $200 drive that could deal with CD-RWs. So yeah, the security of an "uncopyable" CD did not last long.
Knowing this, a lot of software publishers implemented their own copy-protection schemes. Some, like SecuROM, were available ready-made from outside vendors and merely slapped on top of the commercial game. These off-the-rack solutions had the same problem as hardware security -- once cracked, they stayed cracked forever, and the crack transferred to anything that used the same version of the program -- and sometimes added an additional layer of "what the actual fuck, did nobody think that through?"
Others opted to simply code into their game checks for legitimacy of the software. If an authentic retail copy of the software was running, everything would be normal. If the game failed the check and was declared a pirate copy, the programmers could implement whatever consequences they felt would be most effective.
Or funniest. Usually they went with funniest.
The bulk of a game's sales happen right after its release, so they didn't need to keep the pirates at bay forever, they just needed to delay and annoy them for a month or two for the extra work to be worth the effort. So over on the PC you get Crysis Warhead's hilarious chicken gun, Serious Sam 3's unkillable scorpion stalker, and Alan Wake and Quantum Break slapping a jaunty eyepatch on your main character. And on the original Playstation, perhaps the most infamous piece of console anti-piracy fuckery ever made, Spyro the Dragon.

Comparing Marketing Strategies For Video Productions
If you're looking for marketing strategies, small business advice, online marketing and cheap Online Video Production services be sure to check out Kurb promotions, because right now I am still testing out lots of new marketing ideas for getting my newest small business ideas of the ground. When starting a new business I think one of the most important things is to gauge your enthusiasm for the project. There are lots of ideas that will work, but are you going to be able to maintain the commitment required to see the project through to profitability and sustainability? Also I think it's a good idea to compare your marketing strategies and consider which combination of marketing strategies and new business development ideas are most likely to be successful. At the moment I have 3 main business ideas which I am attempting to develop: Online Video Production, color copying services, pirate children's entertainment is the main 3. But the idea of pushing small business marketing still lingers because there is no reason to do small business marketing in place of music marketing to make more money, as the market is bigger and has more to spend. I just need to create a service that is worth $100 p/week. And also my music marketing product, which isn't really a wholly new business idea in need of a marketing campaign development but rather a branching off of my existing music marketing service, which I don't feel needs to be developed otherwise. Before we compare marketing strategies let’s consider the ceiling for these ventures both in terms of profit and commitment on my part, and long term potential. Online video production companies san antonio could be highly profitable but will be hard work long term to get there, mainly in establishing a reputation for quality, there's great potential but requires high commitment to the marketing and administration on my part. Color copying is quite similar to video except there's a lot of power in establishing a strong local market that can be sustained. The difference between the two is quality and reputation for video and trust and service for color copying, that's the key to growing each businesses market. Both these businesses have a lot of potential for easy and long term earnings however with the pirate entertainment I have to invest my own time to a greater extent, I only really want 2 jobs per week so I can charge $200 for each. But if we compare the other ideas in terms of marketing strategy, first we must weigh up the contribution of Google search ranking and Google Ad Words advertising. Immediately I see SEO being more effective for video's international audience whereas PPC is much better for the locally based printing services, and the pirate entertainment. That's probably why this will end up a Video Production Services article. I will still do SEO, but I'll be putting my online advertising money toward the printing and building up a strong local base 100 people who spend $200 a year is $20,000 and that's about where I would like to see us kicking off. With the pirate entertainment I only need 2 jobs per week and I'm booked. I think $10 p/week on Google should cover that. Video marketing is a marketing strategy worth evaluating and will obviously need to be improved in order to reflect quality with our cheap Online Video Production services. But the pirates could also benefit from improved Video Production Services also. What about other marketing strategies such as a flyer? What about a flyer with CD/DVD duplication, Color Copying and pirates on it? Perhaps even Online Video Production services also? The point is the first 3 are all dependent on local goodwill and knowledge and I have already seen how a base of clients builds up over time through word of mouth and repeat purchases, this is why the flyer campaign may be effective. So the end result is that the pirates are easy for now, all I have to do is run the ads and grow it slowly. The Color copying I am favoring slightly more because I can establish a robust local market with advertising and already have the posturing and some graphic design stuff going. The printing isn't quite as profitable as the video but I think I will have no problems making the sales in Color copying to meet the target with a modest Google Ad Words campaign. I think with $20 p/week I can generate $200 in profit. With video it's probably more a matter of chipping away with the writing, article marketing and SEO there and I think that will be the path to picking up lots of international traffic for Online Video Production services long term and picking up jobs worth $100-600 ever week, and branching into our YouTube promotions services. So a split marketing strategy is the winner on the day! Its Google Ad Words for local transactions and services and it's a slow building SEO and link building campaign for cheap Online Video Production services to get to a point in 6 months where there is video work every week.

If you are risking the reputation of your company then the most reliable DVD’s are imperative. Using companies that offer cheapest prices on budget discs can lead to disaster. Usually the dvd duplication cost is governed by the quality of the manufacturing process. Cheap cd duplication process sometimes yields a cheap disc that is probably fine for home office back up but higher quality CD-R products mean a slightly more stringent manufacturing process and hence higher costs.

just finished cataloging my cd collection on discogs so i have an easy reference of what i own so i don’t have to rely on my shitty memory and end up buying duplicates lol but here’s a compilation of interesting finds within my collection:
The Beatles / Rubber Soul : full page dedicated to explaining what the Compact Disc format is in the booklet
Tumblr media
(also noticed it in a few other Beatles cd booklets but didn’t check every one. all of the Beatles cds i have were originally my mom’s btw so i’m pretty sure they’re all the first reissue versions which is neat!)
Talking Heads / Fear of Music : made in West Germany
Tumblr media
(wikipedia says this album was first released on cd in 1984, while West Germany still existed)
Queen (self-titled) : somehow i have the Argentinian release????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it has a completely English-language booklet but all the copyright information on the case and disc is written in Spanish. even weirder since i distinctly remember buying this cd in Vermont. how did it get there…..
MGMT / Congratulations : this was a library discard cd (aka previously was a library item that was removed from circulation for some reason but still in good condition so sold for cheap) and i realized this album was originally in a digipak cd case and it had been sliced apart and put in a jewel case?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you look close you can see the uneven edges where they cut case apart (covering library stickers with lyric book in second pic). however they got the back panel to fit so nicely inside the jewel case that i thought it was originally like that which is probably why i didn’t notice for so long lol. but the weirdest part is i have another discard cd from this same library that was left in its original digipak format?? so i guess i’m just wondering why they did this to Congratulations in the first place …..

Seblaine- Present Day (End of June/Year 1)
The Happiest and Tiniest Mini Para Ever: You’re Every Song That I’ve Ever Loved
Rating: PG.
Pairing: Seblaine.
Sebastian: @colorsicantsee
Blaine: @twoblueheartslocked
Time: Year One: Present Day- June, a couple of weeks after All’s Well That Ends Well To End Up With You.
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Info:  A brief interlude with the boys in which Blaine has a bad morning and invites Sebastian to spend the day doing one of his favorite things.
Warnings: This particular Para has mentions of physical violence. This rp as a whole mentions past abuse(Physical, mental and sexual), post unwanted sexual situations, anxiety, depression, negative body image, drug use, alcohol use, cussing, death(parents).
Extra Warnings: (This RP is not Kurt Hummel friendly. You’ve all been warned.)
Title Inspired By: Fall Out Boy- Favorite Record
Under Cut.  As usual, the para is mostly unedited.
 Blaine’s POV:
“Look, I know, it’s super shabby, unorganized, and literally hasn’t been updated since it opened in 1972, but just look at it, Seb. I mean, I’ve found some major gems here, you know? You just gotta dig deep enough.” Blaine grinned up at Seb, his boyfriends face still skeptical as he looked around the hazy, outdated and insanely cluttered record shop. Blaine reached out and gave Sebastian’s hand a squeeze, trying to show him just how grateful he was that Seb had pushed aside his distaste for the mess and had just let Blaine yank him all around different parts of his neighborhood to a few of his favorite music spots. This one was probably his favorite. It was a blast from the past guilty pleasure and Blaine had let himself get lost on more than one occasion.
Normally he’d do this  all on his own. He’d pop in his earbuds, lose himself to whatever artist fit his mood that day  and make his rounds, spending money on vinyl's or old cassettes- neither of which he had a way to play, he was lacking in the cassette player/vinyl player area. Sometimes he bought secondhand works by old artists he loved, and sometimes he bought ones he’d never even heard of before. They were usually cheap so he never felt too guilty for spending the money and the dust on them left his fingers dirty but he liked having them. They felt comforting like an old friend.
He displayed some of them on the walls of his tiny apartment, but most of them lived in a box shoved under his bed and he’d pull them out and memorize the artworks or track lists and sometimes, if he was really inspired, he’d get on Spotify and make a whole playlist based off the stuff he’d gotten on his rounds. He’d made a silent rule that he wasn’t allowed to make the playlist unless he owned the cassette or vinyl, but not CD as they were too easy. It was fun to him and it sometimes managed to make him feel better on his manageable shitty days and this morning had been shitty.
He’d messed up one of his exams and was too anxious to request to do it again, he’d gotten into a spat with Cooper of some stupid thing (Something they’d been doing off and on for the last two weeks since Blaine had “irresponsibly” brought home Soot two weeks ago)  and now for the life of him he couldn’t even remember what it was about this time to begin with. To top it all off Kurt had somehow popped up under the ‘people you may know’ tab on his rarely used Facebook. Kurt was blocked, and so was Rachel and anyone else that might trigger him, so either Kurt had made a new account to creep on Blaine’s life- particularly his life with Seb, or he’d been hacked and a duplicate had been made. Either way, it set his whole crappy morning off and instead of fretting like normal he’d called Seb and asked if he’d mind wasting a rainy day out with him- no cars or drivers, just them. Seb had, of course, accepted. He kept his hand in Seb’s as his fingers expertly flipped through the haphazardly placed records. They’d only been together an hour and already Blaine was letting go of why he was so anxious in the first place.
“I’ve gotten some of my best old vinyl's here. Like look at this one!” He held up a faded white vinyl with the words KC And the Sunshine Band written in yellow-  (I’m your Boogie Man/ Wrap Your Arms Around Me). “Soot’s gonna love this one, she loves it when I pull out the vintage playlists.” He paused, thinking for a moment.
“I mean I think she does. She always sticks her little face in mine when I sing them to her, but maybe she just wants me to shut the hell up.” He laughed a bit and shook his head. “Either way this one can go on a playlist now.” He tucked the disc under his arm, his grin growing as he looked up at Seb. “It’s like the perfect find and I don’t think I would have found it without your unfailing support. Thanks.”
He had meant it teasingly, but truthfully Blaine would have probably just sat at home stressing and overthinking about being irresponsible and how Kurt managed to wheedle his way into his social media presence. This was much better.
 Sebastian’s POV:
Sebastian disliked mess. He’d never decide on his own to walk into this place. There were stacks of records, CDs that probably hadn’t been touched in years, piles of cassette tapes and there was absolutely no organization. But, Blaine had called and Sebastian would walk into any mess he asked him to.
He gingerly picked at a few records and nodded along as Blaine spoke. Sebastian could feel the concerned crease in between his eyebrows and knew he was probably frowning just a tiny bit.
“I would just love to have a few hours in here to just...could you imagine how much more effective looking around would be if these records were in alphabetical order?”
Seb looked around at the yellow cracked walls and the records strung across the ceiling like Christmas lights. “I suppose it has a certain charm. I mean, you love music, so I understand. I wish I had a place to escape like this, I’d prefer it to be more organized, though.”
He loved the excited glow that fell over his  boyfriend when he found the treasured, beat up record. Sebastian wasn’t familiar with the music but the cover looked cheerful enough. “You know, we need to get you a record player. It’s only logical. I know that you love collecting and making your playlists but, it just makes sense. You’re so classic and you love music. Do they sell them here?”
Sebastian’s eyes scanned around the shop but he didn’t see any. He would just have to have one shipped to B’s apartment as a surprise.
He swung their entwined hands between their bodies and laughed, “I’m sure she loves it.”  Seb could picture the scene perfectly-Blaine laying on the couch singing with Soot perched beside him, her little head bobbing as she got closer and closer to his voice.
“Me? A good luck charm? That’s a new one. I’m glad I came today even if this place needs the Marie Kondo treatment.”
Blaine’s POV:
Blaine watched as Sebastian gathered himself and looked around the cramped shop, of course he thought it was too messy. He wanted to reach out and run his thumb over the little crease that appeared between his boyfriend’s perfect eyebrows whenever he was worried or concerned or, in this case, out of place. He fully expected Sebastian’s apartment to be filled with mostly empty white walls and for his bedroom to be bare except for a bed, and a dresser. His bookshelf would probably have aesthetic books and probably hid his real books in a tidy, sturdy box in his immaculate closet. He was almost tempted to ask for a description  before he built up the courage to spend the weekend there so he knew what to wear and how to act. He rolled his eyes playfully and shook his head.
“Digging through them is half the charm and fun, Seb. It’s my favorite part because you truly never know what you’re going to get! Besides, it’s kind of therapeutic for me, keeps my mind off of the mess that’s in my brain when I get to dig through the mess of the store.” He smiled and tucked the record under his arm.
“No, they mostly just sell broken ones that people buy for parts or to fix. It’s cool though, I don’t need one! I mean I used to have one but it’s just sort of gone now. I don’t even know where it is.  Did I lose it after my parents or in the shuffle with Kurt? I can’t remember. I just sort of learned to live without a lot of things after… well, just after-.” He paused, taking in Seb’s look, that determined one that told Blaine that he was going to end up with a new vinyl player whether he needed it or not. It’s only logical- of course Seb would say that. Though he felt himself  blushing a bit over being called classic, it reminded him of when they were together the first time. Seb was always saying stuff like that.
“Don’t even think about it, Sebastian Smythe, you’ve given me so much already, I’m perfectly content displaying them for now and finding them on Spotify.” Even as he said he could just hear the distinct sound of a vinyl player singing his found songs back to him. But, he couldn’t keep letting Seb do that,  he’d already given him the world by giving him Soot. He was okay without a player. He waved Seb off with his free hand, unwilling to let go of Seb’s with his other.
“Well we could find you a place, in fact! My sixth favorite record store doubles as a book store and it’s like a Virgo’s dream. Literally everything is soft grey and black and the items are meticulously placed and  in the correct order. Why don’t we forget about spoiling me and you let me do something for you today? I'll just go and pay for this gem and then we’ll take the short walk and I’ll show you around and then maybe we can stop at this little diner that looks out of place next door. They have amazing milkshakes and we could get a couple and just talk like we used to do when we were teens.”
He pushed his money towards the man behind the counter before Seb could try and pay and dragged his boyfriend out into the warm June afternoon, the paper bag with his purchase tucked under his free arm. “For the record you’re not just any old good luck charm, you’re my favorite.” He pulled Seb closer to him and stole a kiss right out there on the streets of Brooklyn. It made him feel bold and free and a little giddy. He’d grown so used to mostly locking himself away in his apartment and hiding so much of himself for the past few years, it felt good to just kiss the man he loved without worrying he’d get belittled for it by the actual person he was kissing in public.
“C’mon, the Marie Kondo experience is this way, though I can’t promise the diner won’t be just as cluttered as the one we used to go to near Dalton.” He winked and tugged Seb through the crowd by their linked fingers.
 Sebastian’s POV:
Sebastian nodded as if he were going to do what Blaine said. He was going to order him a damn record player, especially after seeing the sad look on his face after he mentioned losing his old one. He was sure that Kurt had it, that it was some sort of leverage or a sick thrill.  That kid was so cold and jealous that Seb wouldn’t be surprised if Kurt had a hidden treasure trove of B’s things just waiting for him to notice and feel hopeless every time he realized something was missing. It made Sebastian feel angry and like he wanted to run up to Kurt’s apartment and deck him in his pinched little nose. But, now wasn’t the time to get worked up. Blaine was excited and talkative and had his hand wound tightly in Seb’s.  The other man had called him his favorite good luck charm and pulled him into a confident kiss right on the sidewalk outside of the cramped music store. That was enough to keep him grounded in the moment. It felt perfect, like the summer days they used to spend floating listlessly in the pool underneath the stars or spinning around under street lights or speeding down county roads, Blaine’s hand in his lap. He’d never admit it out loud but he collected those perfect moments like a scrapbook inside of his brain and it felt like all of the struggle and pain was worth it. Sebastian had to get better to keep collecting these snapshots of time.
“You don’t need to do anything for me, B. But, a milkshake does sound great. Why don’t we go to the diner first and then you can show me the other shop?” He swung their hands in between them. Blaine smiled his signature grin and pulled him in the direction of the diner. The place was old and a little sticky, which would normally bother him but anybody who went to diners knew these types had the best food. Their waitress was plump and rude with a fabulous smear of red lipstick and Sebastian loved her. They ordered two milkshakes (Strawberry for Seb, vanilla bean for B) and shared a big  basket of the greasiest, saltiest, most delicious  fries he’d ever had. They’d even obnoxiously took turns asking for change for the decrepit jukebox in the corner.  Sebastian would pick an oldie and Blaine would sing into the long spoon from his shake and the waitress would roll her eyes. He was going to leave her a huge tip. They laughed until his stomach hurt and ordered burnt coffee to go.
They walked around Blaine’s sixth favorite record store and he was right, it was meticulously organized and satisfying. Sebastian especially liked the book section and could imagine coming back here. He found a worn copy of The catcher In The Rye and B insisted on purchasing it for him along with a Great Gatsby magnet displayed by the register. Seb didn’t have any magnets so it was a welcome addition to his sleek, unused kitchen.
They wandered back to Blaine’s apartment where Soot greeted them with a purr and a headbutt to each of their shins. The three of them cuddled up on the couch and drank the dregs of their old coffee, looked over Blaine’s record collection, and kissed until time slipped away.

an introduction.
by now the "vinyl resurgence" has been so talked about, so reported on, so lived in that even kids know about it. you can easily catch children barely old enough to drive flexing a collection deep enough to make a lifelong aficionado envious, or a few choice cuts that are worth enough second hand to pay off someone's student loans. this isn't anything new anymore, it simply is. but for me, growing up, i didn't know what the hell "vinyl" was. my first experience with it was crawling around the floor in the family room of my childhood home, pulling back a door on our TV stand, and finding a short row of tall, colorful spines hidden behind a bag of playstation controllers. the pigments were faded, the text eaten up by missing pieces of print, the corners dented... they looked neglected, almost like antiques. i carefully grabbed one and pulled it out from the back of the cabinet, holding it in front of my face and trying to figure out what the hell it was. the picture on the front, while desaturated from years of dusty living, held a bright and warm color scheme that grabbed my eye immediately. hues of red and purple blended together on top of a large drawing of what kinda looked like bird wings, kinda looked like a flower in full bloom. a marble in the middle held a bob ross lookalike landscape inside, almost like a snowglobe. across it all was a single word in blue: "journey". "wait, journey? ugh, i hate journey." in my house, the only music that ever played was journey adjacent. any soon to be "classic rock" hair metal and blues rock bands you can think of, the more stereotypical the better, were the norm. journey, bon jovi, aerosmith... these were what i exclusively heard growing up. before i heard anything else, i enjoyed the music enough, but at this point, i had already had a borderline religious experience listening to "hybrid theory" by linkin park for the first time and realized what i had been missing out on. those aforementioned bands, with their flaccid riffs and sing along choruses just didn't hit anymore. regardless, my initial confusion wasn't quite solved. so, this has to do with the band journey, but what was this? i turned it over to see a list of songs on the back. i didn't really recognize any except for "wheel in the sky", a track that would often play from the speakers on top of the tv stand i was curled under. did this thing have music on it? i flipped it back around and felt one side of it gently open. looking inside, i was taken aback by how bad it smelled. it reminded me of my grandparent's basement, especially the corner of it filled with bins of old picture books that probably had seen more mold than air in recent years. the symptoms of neglect began to pile up. despite the less than stellar sensory experience at hand, i reached inside and grabbed hold of what felt like a thin plate. pulling it out softly, i found myself holding a flat, black disc. looking at the label, the deeply etched grooves, the rainbow pattern that would faintly shoot across the surface just in the right light, it dawned on me... i had seen these before! it wasn't rock music that introduced me to vinyl, but hip-hop... albeit, somewhat subliminally. countless music videos, photo shoots, album covers all featured these flat, black discs... either spinning endlessly or being pushed, flipped, and altogether manhandled by DJs. i didn't know what DJs did, but i at least knew that if someone was behind a machine with these discs on them, they were a DJ. eventually, my mother walked in and tersely told me to put the item back. i obliged and didn't think much of it for the immediate future. but as i got older and my passion for music grew insatiable, what i now knew as "records" or "LPs" became a curiosity i just couldn't ignore. my deep love of hip-hop led me to learn the history of house parties and sampling, educating me not only on LPs as a medium but as a tool. artists like trent reznor would speak endlessly about their experiences at record stores, how a single copy of pink floyd's "the wall" changed their life
beyond just the music in the grooves. i was entranced and i wanted in. meekly, i asked my mother if i could have some of the records sitting in the cabinet, maybe even just the duplicates. she flat out rejected the idea, to my dismay. i didn't even know how i could get a hold of these! i didn't have a credit card, so ebay was out of the question, plus i didn't have any record stores near me. but, i knew i could eventually find one if i looked online hard enough. for what i believe was my 12th or 13th birthday, i spent all my collected present money on a mail order shopping spree. i dropped something like $50 on CDs and 2 records from chicago's reckless records, to the confusion of my parents. while my love of music was growing in a way they couldn't ignore (despite them not even knowing yet i had been releasing music online already), any holiday money i would collect almost immediately got dropped off at a gamestop (or eb games when they were still around... or a babbages when they were still around) and exchanged for the newest tony hawk or gran turismo game. but no, not this time. this time, i was cashing out on music. so, when the package finally arrived and i excitedly had my mother open it, euphoria rushed in at lightning speed when i saw a black square inside, the same dimensions as that "journey" record all those years ago. sure, it was a cheap and somewhat scratched copy of a "the hand that feeds" remix 12" from nine inch nails (and a 45 copy of the "somewhere i belong" single from linkin park below), but it was my cheap and somewhat scratched copy. i didn't even have a record player, but i had finally did it... i bought my very own record. over 10 years, numerous moves, one massive sell off, and a half-decade tenure at a record store later, i currently have a record collection of over 500 pieces. i spent years and years endlessly curating and collecting LPs from all across the world, of any and all genres, and in all manner of conditions. and now i'm selling them. see, now we arrive at the point. (sorry for making you wait so long.) after all this time, i've made the decision to sell the vast majority of the collection i've basically spent a lifetime putting together. it wasn't an easy decision to make, as the idea bounced around in my head for years before i finally succumbed to the necessity of it, but this blog will be my way of giving the history i've been so lucky to collect over the years a proper, respectful send off. so here we go. over the next however long, i will be melodramatically and probably infrequently giving chunks of my collection one final rotation on my turntable, making my peace and saying my goodbyes to a part of my life that's come to define my relationship with my deepest passion: music. i'll reflect and share any stories or thoughts here as i go through, and hopefully someone other than myself will find some joy, entertainment, or even connection in these words. let's begin.

The Setbacks of Piracy
“Piracy is the unauthorized use or reproduction of another’s work”, this is according to the Oxford Dictionary which specifically describes what piracy is all about. From this, we can safely say that piracy is an illegal act and is punishable by law of most, if not all, countries from all over the world. According to a website called  The Economic Times, you are committing piracy when you’re duplicating  copyrighted works and profit from them as they are being sold at a substantially low price. It is to suit the general public’s taste and not to mention their budgets in the ‘grey’ market. Especially in today’s Digital Age where technology is continuing to grow more easier to use and access, comes piracy getting more rampant than before as both are connected in some ways to each other. Although there are already enough if not many laws passed both nationally and international level, there are still people willing break to these laws and continue to make piracies. These are specially noticed in the film and music industries, which often are costly for some people that is why they’re buying the pirated versions of these film and music.
Piracy is done in many ways and forms. There are video piracy, cable piracy, and the most popular ones are DVD or CD piracy. Each have their own ways of being duplicated and distributed but all are punishable by law. That is the number one setback of piracy, where there is a risk of you being caught and punished not only if you make and reproduce them but by also buying them. According to Digital Piracy: Advantages and Disadvantages of Piracy (Multimedia Industry), an article blog published online, although there are said advantages of making piracies, there also setbacks or disadvantages to this act. One of it is when you download a free-file online, this will make you susceptible to transmittable viruses and ad-wares that will end up lagging your device or much worse. Another setback of piracy is that because it is an illegal act, the means of acquiring them are often made in discrete thus it may not be as accurate and well-defined than the original. This can be observed in pirated films where there are sometimes people walking across the film as it was taken in cinemas in secret. And the setback we often forget as we are vent on acquiring this forms of media is that although piracies are much more easy and cheaper to buy, sometimes the rarer things we’ve waited and worked hard to acquire will give us more satisfaction than cheap and mass-produced things. That is why avid fans often take pride in buying limited editions and original items from their idols as they want to be recognized as a true fan and also recognize the significance of an item that no amount of money would even hinder them to acquire it.
