CHAUMIERE D'AUGE

"You needn’t think that a harem is much of a thing; you might as well have a herd of goats. The women are horribly stupid down there; I much prefer the grisettes of the Chaumieres at Mont-Parnasse."

Laura Wheeler Waring was an educator and painter born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1887. She was the fourth of six children born to her mother, Mary and father Robert. Her mother was the daughter of Amos Noe Freeman, a prominent abolitionist who had worked with the Underground Railroad in Main and New York. Her father, was the pastor of the Talcott Street Congregational Church, the first all-black church in the state of Connecticut. She was highly educated and from a highly educated family, the 6th generation of college graduates. She was noted in high school for her artistic skill and would go on to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Perhaps this is also what led her into education as her career path. Laura began teaching art and music at the Cheyney University (then called the Cheyney Training School for Teachers) in Philadelphia in 1906 and stayed until 1914 when she would graduate. Then she would travel abroad after receiving the A. William Emlen Cresson Memorial Travel Scholarship. It was off to France for her to study art at the Louvre in Paris. She studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris but did not limit her travels to France alone, though she did spend copious time at the museums, also traveling through Great Britain and had planned to travel more to see Germany, Italy and beyond but sadly her plans were dashed and her trip cut short when war was declared in Europe. She would return to the United States where she would continue developing as an artist. After the war was over, she would return to Paris. And this second trip is regarded as the turning point in her career. She said of it "The only period of uninterrupted life as an artist with an environment and associates that were a constant stimulus and inspiration." She enveloped herself in the art and culture of France and would exhibit her work in Paris for the first time. She also developed her style. Vibrant. Bright. Deep, strong realistic colors on her life like figures. In the US, she was one of the many artists who took part in the first African-American Art Exhibition held in 1927 by the William E Harmon Foundation, and was commissioned by the Harmon Foundation to paint portraits of prominent figures in the black community and Harlem Renaissance. This is what she is best known for now, with subjects including W.E.B. DuBoise, James Weldon Johnson, Marian Anderson and more. Laura married in 1927, to Walter Waring. A man from Philadelphia that also worked as teacher. As with many artists we have covered this month, some of her work is lost. Mainly her work in France. Following her death in 1948, Howard University Gallery of Art in Washington DC held an exhibition in her honor and still today her work appears in exhibitions.
She was a fascinating woman, artist, and educator. If you'd like to see more of Laura's work or learn more about her:

Did you know?
When edger degas reached 36 years old, he began to have problems with his sight that continued to deteriorate gradually throughout his life.
Shortly after enlisting in the National Guard at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war, Degas developed a form of retinal disease that would result in color confusion, photophobia, and scotoma. Due to the fact that his retinopathy prohibited him from working in bright light, Degas preferred to work indoors, finding himself especially adept at the low light of the ballet and opera. By his forties, Degas had lost his central vision, and at age 57, he could no longer read. His failing eyesight surely affected his work-the broader strokes, bolder colors, and experimentation in an array of mediums including pastels, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

Alexander Skunder Boghossian (July 22, 1937 – May 4, 2003) first rose to prominence at the age of 17 when he won second prize for his painting at the Jubilee Anniversary Celebration of Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie I. He was awarded a scholarship to study in London at St. Martin’s School and the Slade School of Fine Art. He moved to Paris, where he remained for nine years as both a student and teacher at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. He interacted with African artists and intellectuals who were part of the Negritude movement. He encountered the work of the French surrealists. Some of the artists who influenced Boghossian include Paul Klee, Roberto Matta, and the Afro-Cuban artist Wilfredo Lam.
In 1966 returned to Ethiopia and taught at the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa. He moved to the US in 1970 and was appointed as a faculty member at Howard University. His work, described as “a perpetual celebration of the diversity of blackness,” has been on display throughout the world including the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was the first contemporary African artist to have his work purchased by the Museum of Modern Art.
He died two days before the opening of an exhibit of his work titled “Ethiopian Passages: Dialogues in the Diaspora. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
