UNE RENCONTRE INATTENDUE

En ce temps radieux Tintin se prommenait sur le vieux marché, il espérait y trouver quelques trésors de lecture. Soudain, il se figea. Il venait de remarquer une antiquité qui en valait la peine : une Caravelle.

Il la regarda de plus près : "La Licorne" ainsi était-elle nommée. Tintin paya le vendeur mais à ce moment précis un homme commencait à se précipiter sur l'étalage. C'était un américain, il portait des vêtements de feutrine bleue. Il demanda à Tintin s'il ne voulait pas lui revendre le magnifique vaisseau. La réponse fut négative bien entendu. Après cela, l'homme commencait à le mettre en garde contre des personnes mal attentionées qui pourraient être prêtes à tout pour s'emparer du bateau. L'homme s'éloignait de plus en plus, et finit par s'en aller.

Soudain, une voix se fit entendre :

"Magnifique... oh... il est magnifique ...

Pas la peine de l'envelopper, je le prends comme il est, vous ne voyez pas d'objection à ce que je le paye par chèque ?"

"Encore quelqu'un d'interessé..." pensa Tintin.

Le vendeur lui répondit : "si vous voulez l'acheter addressez vous à ce garçon !" 

Sakharine répliqua : "Je vois ... alors laissons ce garçon nous fixer son prix..."

"Il n'est pas à vendre", Répondit Tintin.

Sakharine lui réponda qu'il avait récemment obtenue le chateau de Moulinsart et que La Licorne faisait partie du domaine. Et que la famille héritière du chateau était maudite.

Mais peu importe ses explications, Tintin ne lui vendra pas sa maquette. Et ce dernier repartit jusqu'à son appartement avec des questions plein la tête, "pourquoi ce bateau faisait-il tant d'envieux ? - quel secret pouvait-il bien renfermer ?"

Tintin posa le bateau sur sa commode et se rendit à la bibliothèque, histoire d'en apprendre plus sur la fameuse Licorne. Il apprenna que La Licorne était en faite un vaisseau de la flotte de Louis XIV, et que ce dernier avait offert au Capitaine, Le Chevalier François de Haddoque, en échange de sa loyauté, un trésor inestimable. Mais le vaisseau a été attaqué par des pirates, et seul le Chevalier en réchappa. 

Depuis la famille est victime de cette malédiction. Dans le livre, une inscription attira son attention :

"seul un vrai Haddock découvrira le secret de La Licorne..."

Plus tard, Tintin rentra chez lui et découvrit avec stupeur stupeur que le bateau avait disparu. Sur cette découverte, il décida de se rendre à la source, c'est-à-dire, au Chateau de Moulinsart.

Il arriva alors sur place et il y trouva la maquette du bateau. Mais il reçu subitement un coup sur la tête et s'écroula. Il se reveilla avec la voix de Sakharine "Bienvenue au Château de Moulinsart".

Tintin alla droit au but : "je suis venue récupérer ma propriété !!" 

Sakharine : "Je ne suis pas sur de vous comprendre..." 

Tintin : "Oh, vous me comprenez très bien, ce navire était dans mon appartement il y a moins d'une heure ! "

Sakharine : "j'ai bien peur que vous ne fassiez erreur, Monsieur Tintin !"

Tintin : il n'y a pas d'erreur ce bateau m'appartient !"

Sakharine : "En êtes vous sûr ?"

Tintin : Enfin, évidemment j'en suis sur, j'ai remarqué que ce bateau avait le mat décollé....... mais.... celui-ci.... il est... intacte... !? Ce n'est pas mon navire ..." 

Sakharine : "vous voyez bien !!

Bon, il se fait tard, vous devriez rentrez chez vous, jeune homme... 

Nestor, raccompagnez le !"

Le majordome rejoignit Tintin jusqu'à la porte et lui dit : "C'est dommage, monsieur... Que le mat soit brisé sur votre bateau, Monsieur... J'espère que vous avez retrouvé toutes les pièces, les choses se perdent si facilement !"

Nestor se fit rappeler par Sakharine et Tintin repartit de son côté.

Il rentra chez lui, et découvrit son appartement sans dessus dessous, il était clair que les "cambrioleurs" étaient à la recherche de quelque chose de très précis. Tout avait été fouillé, mais rien avait disparu.

Jusqu'à ce que Tintin vu une lumière sous l'un de ses meubles. Il y trouva un cylindre, et à l'intérieur de celui-ci, un parchemin. 

Tintin le lu.

"Trois frères unis, trois licornes de conserves voguant au soleil de midi parleront, car c'est de la lumière que viendra la lumière et alors resplendira la croix de l'Aigle."

À quoi correspondent ces signes, une sorte de language secret ou... un code. Je comprends pas ce que c'est. Mais ça explique pourquoi ils ont saccagé mon appartement, ils devaient chercher ça et il ne l'ont pas trouvé... ce qui veut dire... qu'ils vont revenir..."

La sonnette retentit et la concierge Mme Pinson alla voir ce que c'était.

Tintin descendit aussitôt qu'il entendit que cette visite le concernait. Et il reconnu l'homme du vieux marché, l'américain... 

"Mon garçon, c'est vous ?" Dit-il.

"Qu'est-ce que vous voulez ?" 

"Écoutez, je ne vous dirai pas tout, mais je le jure devant Dieu, je n'aurais jamais cru qu'il(s) turai(en)t pour ça !!"

"Répondez-moi ! QUI ?"

L'homme n'eut pas le temps de répondre car soudainement, on lui tira dessus.

Il s'écroula dans le hall de l'immeuble avec juste le temps d"écrire le message suivant : "Karaboudjan".

Le lendemain, Tintin reçut les Dupontd pour l'enquête. L'homme est un nommé Barnabé Dawes, c'est un inspecteur très haut placé d'Interpol.

Après avoir pu détecter la moindre preuve possible dont ce fameux message, les Dupondt partirent.

Tintin les raccompagna à la porte.

Pendant ce temps sur un bateau nommé "Karaboudjan"...

Le capitaine du navire (Kathrynn Haddock) était occupée à faire l'inventaire des marchandises contenues sur le bateau, quand soudain un de ses "marins" lui injecta avec une serringue un puissant soporifique. C'était Tom, un sbire d'un certain Sakharine.

Ce dernier s'était incrusté sur le bateau. Et maintenant que la capitaine était hors d'état de nuir(e), il pouvait prendre le contrôle du navire. Kathrynn se retouvait prisonnière de son propre bateau, dans ses propres cales.

En attendant, Tintin vivait la même chose, alors qu'il était tranquillement en train de regarder les Duponts s'en aller, il fut interpeller par deux soit-disant "livreurs"... qui lui appliquèrent aussitôt un tampon de chloroforme sous le nez. 

... encore un coup de Sakharine...

Tintin fut emmener sur le Karaboudjan, pour y être interrogé.

Il était enchaîné à une cage. Il se réveilla doucement comprenant que quelqu'un fouillait ses poches. C'était Tom et Allan.

Sakharine arriva dans la pièce et s'exclama : 

"Alors vous l'avez trouvé ?"

Allan répondit :

"Ben, il est pas sur lui, patron... Il est pas là..."

"Pas là ? Alors, où est-il ?"

Tintin maintenant réveillé répondu.

"Où est quoi ?"

"Le manuscrit de La Licorne, un morceau de papier comme celui-ci !"

"Vous parlez du poème ?"

"Oui..."

"Du poème calligraphié ?"

"Oui..." 

"Qui était dans un cylindre ?"

"Oui !"

"Caché dans le mat ?"

"OUI !"

Tintin fit un petit sourire en coin et répondit : "Je ne l'ai pas !"

Sakharine entra dans une colère noire.

Il brandit l'épée qu'il cachait habituellement dans sa canne et menaça Tintin.

"Vous connaissez la valeur de ce manuscrit, sinon pourquoi le voudriez vous ?"

"Deux caravelles, et deux parchemins faisant partis d'une énigme, vous en avez un, vous voulez l'autre mais ce n'est pas tout, il y a autre chose..."

"Je le retrouverai avec ou sans votre aide mon petit. Je vous conseil de réfléchir jusqu'à quel point vous pouvez me servir..."

Sakharine et ses sbires repartirent.

"On s'occupera de lui en chemin" dit ce dernier.

Arrivé sur le pont, Sakharine était plus en colère que jamais.

"Ah ! Il ment, il doit l'avoir ce manuscrit, la question est qu'est-ce qu'il en a fait ?"

"On la complètement fouillé, patron !"

"Je veux que vous redescendiez et que vous le fassiez parler, briser lui tous les os du corps, s'il le faut."

Un autre sbire de sakharine arriva en criant : 

"Monsieur Sakharine, Monsieur Sakharine, la Capitaine a repris ses esprits, elle est consciente et nous accuse de mutinerie, elle dit que vous avez retourner l'équipage contre elle !"

"Bah restez pas planté là réinjecter lui une dose !" 

"Oui, patron" dirent-ils.

Allan et Tom repartirent interroger Tintin qui n'avait, malheureusement aucun moyen de s'échapper. 

"Bon cette fois, tu vas nous dire où se trouve le parchemin !" Dit Allan.

"Je vous ai déjà dit que je ne l'ai pas !

"Très bien ! On va s'amuser alors ! Tom, tu te joint à la fête ?"

"Bien sûr" dit-il en refermant ses points.

Allan prit les cheveux de Tintin pour lui tenir la tête et il commença à lui donner des coups dans le ventre. 

"Eeeeuue..." Tintin cracha du sang.

Après quelques minutes, Tom fut une suggestion à Allan, que ce dernier approuva. Allan sortit son arme et le metta dans la bouche de Tintin, bien entendu l'arme était chargée.

"Tu vas nous dire où se trouve le parchemin où sinon, tu peux dire adieu à ta vie !!"

Il enfonça de plus en plus le revolver dans sa gorge, tellement profond que Tintin tirait au coeur. 

Allan retira le revolver le posa, et s'en crier gard, lui donna un coup de pied en pleine figure, et il continua avec un coup de points. Il était littéralement en train de se défouler sur lui.

"Allan, arrête, le patron le veut vivant et en état de parler. Tu vas finir par le tuer si tu continues !"

"Je ne t'ai rien demandé"

"Mais..."

Allan décida de détacher Tintin (salement amauché, limite en état de s'évanouir) et de l'emmener à Sakharine en personne.

"Allez hop, on s'en va !! " 

Il le traîna et Tintin gémissait de douleur.

"Allan ? Qu'est-ce que tu fais ici ?" 

"Patron, je vous le ramène, il est à vous ! Il n'a pas dit un seul mot depuis tout à l'heure, et j'ai pensé qu'une arme bien plus redoutable qu'un revolver pourrait l'aider à parler !!" 

"Je vois... attachez le solidement juste ici, je sais exactement ce que je vais faire..."

Sakharine s'adressa à Tintin, et lui demanda une nouvelle fois où était le parchemin. Mais Tintin trop faible pour répondre, il arrivait à peine à prononcer la moindre syllabe.

Sakharine s'approcha de lui, lui prit le menton, et avec l'aide de sa canne-épée, il lui enfonça cette dernière dans l'oeil. 

"Ahhhhaaahh !!! " Un affreux cri de douleur se fit entendre. 

"Avec ça j'espère que ça ira mieux !" Murmura Sakharine.

Son sang coulait abondamment.

"Tout ça... pour un... parche...min, "il doit y ... avoir quel...que chose... d'autre..."

Tintin s'évanouit...

Pendant ce temps, Kathrynn avait la ferme intention de sortir de cette pièce. Elle cria pour attirer l'attention de Sakharine :

"Sakharine ! C'est à vous que je parle, pour qui vous prenez-vous ? Vous êtes sur mon bateau ! Vous n'avez aucun droit, surtout pas celui de commander mon équipage ou même de le corrompre pour je ne sais quelles raisons !

LAISSEZ MOI SORTIR !!"

À ce moment là, la porte s'ouvrit. Il s'agit de Tom, venu pour rendormir Kathrynn.

Mais, il n'eut pas le temps de finir. Kathrynn, fit mine de dormir et quand il fut assez près, elle en profita pour lui mettre un coup de poing dans la figure, pour ensuite s'évader.

Son coup avez mis Tom K.O. Quand il se releva,

il donna l'alerte :

Elle s'est échappait".

Il reçut, une fois de plus, un autre coup de poing, d'Allan, cette fois-ci.

"Tu n'es qu'un bon à rien !!" Dit Allan.

Allan, pris ensuite toutes les dispositions pour retrouver Kathrynn. Mais ils devaient encore en avertir Sakharine. Et ça, il le redoutait.

Kathrynn tentait de trouver une cachette en attendant car toutes les issues étaient prises.

Elle entra donc dans une pièce encore une fois à fond de cale.

Elle ferma à clé derrière elle (elle posséde un passe-partout qu'Alla et Tom n'ont pas pensé à récupérer). Elle se retourna et vit quelqu'un allongé à même le sol.

"Qui est-ce ? je ne le connais pas...

We just our first two rainy days since arriving in Dali, China. Luckily, we'd already gotten most of the cherry blossom photos we needed. Yesterday afternoon, Jake and Lisa and I spent a couple hours sitting on the floor of our glass sunroom, listening to the rain and cracking a big bag of macadamia nuts and another bag of pine nuts. Lisa had a hard time using the nutcracker, but she sure was good at stealing and eating the macadamia nuts. . The other good thing about a rainy day is it is a chance to get some work done on the blog. Le château de Moulinsart

Fin de notre journée à explorer la région parisienne. Très peu de satisfaction  jusque là. Je propose un spot un peu particulier. Il est en très bon état mais est finalement peu meublé. C’est un superbe château du XIXème siècle et de style Louis XVIII. Le château de Moulinsart a été racheté par un riche et mystérieux personnage. Mais ce dernier ne l’a jamais habité.

Arrivé sur les lieux, nous nous rendons compte de la beauté du bâtiment. les volets sont fermés tout autour, renforcés avec des chaînes et des cadenas. Difficile de trouver un accès pour visiter l’intérieur. Au bout d’un certain temps, nous finissons par trouver dans un renfoncement une petite porte en bois. Les lames de bois la composant sont pour certaines cassées. En en bougeant quelques une nous finissons par créer un espace suffisamment grand pour s’introduire. La découverte du lieu peut commencer. L’endroit n’est pas meublé mais dispose de beau volume. L’état est plus que propre, un coup de balai et nous pourrions nous y installer. Au détour de la visite, nous nous rendons compte que le lieu a du être squatté à une époque, il reste un vieux matelas et quelques objets faisant penser à cela.

You have probably heard of the 4 great C’s of Loire: Cheverny, immortalised in Tintin’s Château de Moulinsart. Chenonceau, the elegant castle of the ladies. Chaumont, with its medieval suspension bridge and Chambord, with its 400 rooms and almost just as many chimneys.

You may even have read something about Villandry, with its beautiful garden, Angers and the famous Apocalypse Tapestries or Clos-Lucé, that was home to Leonardo da Vinci.

This story is not about them. Instead, it’s the story about 5 other castles, that all have a unique story to tell. One castle is filled with alchemist signs, another has its own theatre and a third has a Marble Lounge, that’s worth of Versailles.

Let’s discover these five fabulous  – or rather underrated – castles of the Loire Valley

Loire Valley = Castle Country

If Czechoslovakia is the country with the highest density of castles per square kilometre, the Loire valley must come in a close second. No less than 42 castles make up this Unesco World Heritage classified landscape and Chambord, the biggest castle in the world, is part of the list.

The area is perfect for a romantic getaway. Cruising with the car along the lazy Loire river, discovering castle after castle, dining al fresco in medieval towns, where illuminated cathedrals and shrieks of swallows serve as backdrop. You can enjoy the terroir of the wines: sparkling wines from the cool cellars of Saumur, crisp whites from Savennieres or dark reds from Anjou together with excellent food and turn your castle roadtrip into a gastronomic one as well.

Alchemist signs and a style in transition

Château Plessis-Bourré was built in less than 5 years from 1468 to 1472 by Finance Minister Jean Bourré, the principal advisor to King Louis XI. This was a curious time for building castles. The architects had one foot in the Medieval past and the other in the Renaissance future, and thus Château Plessis-Bourré is a perfect example of the so-called transition style.

Double drawbridges, large moats, a parapet walk and dungeons classified it as a medieval fortresses, yet the arcaded gallery, stately courtyard, rich decorations and the comfort of the interiors classifies it as a Renaissance palace.

Jean Bourré was an alchemist and that was considered a dark art in medieval times, where science was in embryo. So he had to hide the signs, that would be recognized by fellow alchemists. And he hid them in plain sight, in the decorations and ornamentations of the rooms.

Especially the guardroom, which follows the taste of the medieval society for symbolism in images, seems to declare Jean Bourré’s interest in alchemy. The ceiling is composed of 24 sections and 16 of them symbolize the search of the Philosopher’s Stone, the alchemistic symbol of richness and eternal life, while the other 8 represent the laws, that the alchemist had to follow during his quest. This iconography is completed by other decorations everywhere in the castle, especially on the doors, façades and the main stairway.

Study in Light and Marble

Château de la Lorie was built as a Renaissance castle in 1650 and was so luxuriously decorated, that the developer, René le Pelletier, ran out of money and was forced to sell his castle to his son-in-law, Gabriel Constantin. Stables were added and the castle was modernized through the next hundred years.

The large marble lounge from 1780 is the pièce de résistance of the castle and is exceptional, since the techniques used were usually dedicated to royal palaces. Built in the Age of Enlightenment, where the style of Neoclassicism drew inspiration from the classical art and culture of Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome, it’s no surprise that the masterpiece looks like a hall from a Greek palace.

The room is similar to the opulent Salon de la Guerre et de la Paix in Versailles, but more pure in its Greek expression, whereas Versailles is just ridiculously lavish. The pieces of furniture, by Parisian cabinetmaker Pluvinet from 1779, are still used in the marble room and the collection is so complete and well preserved, that it has been lent out to several museums over the years.

Medieval mansion turned Renaissance residence

Almost every medieval castle underwent renovations and rejuvenations in the Renaissance. With peace and prosperity diminishing the need for fortifications, the nobility instead was looking for a way to show of their wealth and enjoy life in a comfortable castle. As is the story of Château de Montreuil-Bellay.

The first castle was built by Foulque Nerra, The Black Falcon, in the 11th century. He was count of Anjou, a warrior, a builder, a pilgrim and benefactor for monasteries and schools. Through this noble warrior, the House of Plantagenet descended and held the English throne for more than 300 years.

The castle was given to Foulque’s vassal, Giraud Berlay, also known as Bellay. Montreuil-Bellay could now begin its history. The Château of today was constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries. The end of the Hundred Years War in 1475 put an end to the English influence and ushered in a period of peace. This means, that the castle became a residence of leisure, not just a fortress for survival. Elegant additions replaced the defensive characteristics and turned the castle into a Renaissance residence.

As a part of a castle’s Renaissance evolution is also the addition of toilets and bathrooms. A rare example of this, is the Steam Bath system, that was installed in the former Canon’s quarters in the 15th century. A waiter would boil a large basin of water in the room at the bottom of the building and the steam then rose up through a pipe to a small room, where the bather would enjoy a hot steam bath.

Giant of the Loire Valley

While Château de Brissac, like most other castles, has a medieval history, the castle we see today is a Baroque behemoth built in the 17th century and the tallest in France. It has been in the possession of the same family since 1502 and now, in 2016,  514 years later, the descendants, the Marquess and the Marchioness still live in this grand Château with their four children.

This so-called “Giant of the Loire Valley” boasts 7 floors and more than 200 rooms. Not all are open to the public, but those who are, are lavishly decorated and furnitured. The Dining Hall with its walls covered with antlers and the Hunting Room with its massive 4-poster bed and 5 giant tapestries depicting hunting scenes. The dark red bedchamber of King Louis XIII and The Golden Lounge with its amazing coffered ceiling are just some of the highlight of tour through the castle.

The beautiful Art Nouveau theatre is an intimate yet large hall with 200 seats, born of the ambitious dream of Jeanne Say, Marchioness of Brissac and music lover at the end of the 19th century. The decadent addition is a testament to the tremendous transition the castle has undergone, from it’s construction by the tireless builder Foulque Nerra to the castle of today.

Home of princes

Château de Serrant is a Renaissance castle, built on the foundations of a medieval fortress and the private residence of the Prince of Merode. The Château distinguishes itself by the richly furnished rooms with unique characters and especially its precious library with 12.000 old books.

The austere and desolate exterior of the chateau shouldn’t put you off. This study in schist and tuffeau stone emerged from its medieval foundations to a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. The huge kitchen still rests under the medieval aches of the old fortress, while the rest of the castle has been rebuilt.

A guided tour will take you through wonderful rooms, original furniture and display wonderful craftsmanship, like the Ebony Cabinet, a cabinet-making masterpiece conserved for more than 300 years inside the castle. It’s elaborately carved, reveals mirrors, rocaille, precious marquetry works and numerous secret drawers.

The highlight of the tour and castle is the extraordinary library with 12.000 old books. Treasures like the Encyclopedia of Diderot, Napoleon’s Egyptian Descriptions with illustrations made by Piranesi and La Fontaine’s Fables with drawings of J.B Oudry are all jewels, that crown this welcoming and unique room.

Château de Serrant is still a private estate and the current owners, the Prince and Princess de Merode, are descendant of the Dukes of La Trémoïlle.
