A Day In The Shit

Colonel M. Sky

"Private get your ass up and move and cover move and cover....move your ass NOW"......"YES DRILL SGT", yells the soldier.  "Private if you don't get your ass moving I'm gonna give you a kiwi injection in your two point of contact,  now move your ass" Soldiers running with full packs covering and moving as they go through "El Camino Sangroso" course.  Flashbangs going off in the dark, explosions lighting up the night and sounds of rifles firing. "Climb and get that ass over that bunker,  move your ass Private Sky"...."Yes Drill Sgt", replies the Soldier.... rifles firing and the booms of grenades. (Flashback to the present) The Colonel is lying on his side weapon in hand and sorrounded by smoke the smell of dust in his nose and his face blackened by the smoke itself.  Remembering his days in boot camp. He begins to hear faint talking in the distance, a language all to familiar to him,  Vietnamese.  He remembers he is in a Vietcong tunnel mapping it out from recent Intel he had received.  The Colonel gets up radioing Base Control "Taking fire,Taking Fire, engaging the enemy"....realizing he is still to far in the tunnel system for his transmission to be heard. He returns fire with his M1 Thompson shooting out the lights of the tunnels. He hears yelling in Vietnamese and hearing the zip of bullets fly by him.  He double times towards what seems to be an exit.....he turns and throws a grenade. The explosion echoes as he sees the small tunnel entrance and his surroundings turn to blackness from the explosion.  No more Vietnamese talk......"Base control how copy" , no answer so he continues on till he finally reaches the edge of the river.  He takes a knee behind cover to ensure he is not spotted outside what seems to be a machine gun bunker.The bunker is located on the Laos side of the border and the Colonel knows he needs to high tail it out of the area. He sees his opportunity and dives into the river swimming to the other side. He reaches the rice field and double times it to base.  As he approaches he recognizes Private Logan on gate duty "Welcome home Sir".....the Colonel runs in as the gate opens glancing over at the private as he catches his breath.  Solo missions always have their risks but have to be done to attain accurate intel.  The Colonel heads to the mess area with the hopes of finding fresh water....he finds Lemon Juice instead. "Fuck it, its better than piss"...he drinks it and stands there collecting himself.  As he stands there he notices Corporal Thatcher is also in the mess area. He glances and returns to his Juice wondering what other Intel he will receive from MACV.

Private Chase

He ducked and switched off his torch, then gestured Thatcher that he'd approach the village from the other side of the lake. At first the bushes blocked his view, but then he spotted her through her window, lying on her bed, reading and wearing nothing, but a far too big shirt.They had met for the first time at the Duc Pho Clinic, where he'd went to get something against the hammering headache that had been torturing him for more than a few days since his arrival now, but it seemed gone, the moment she had looked at him. He being new to Vietnam, only a week, and the closest thing to a hot chick was the Clinic Doctor. She reminded him of some actress he had seen at the movies, in some artsy fartsy french film, way back home. He stayed put in the silent dark. She had been friendly, with smiling eyes, but her body language had told him differently. Her arms had been crossed in front of her chest and each time he had tried to move closer during their conversation, she had moved back. He sighed shortly. He enjoyed his view, felt like 12 again, when he had peeped through Mrs. Crabtrees window, a tasty young teacher from the neìghborhood... His thoughts drifted away, then he suddenly heard Thatcher's voice via comm. He replied and murmured a "pity" to himself, then got on his way to join the rest, waiting for him in Vin already.

Corporal Thatcher

Allexis sure wished this new private would get it together.  Babysitting was not what she had signed up for.  Kid still as wet behind the ears as he was only in country for one week.  Ok she told herself not that bad but we are here to fight not find dates.  They had  had a meeting to make in Vinhula and what had he been doing - peeping in some window.  She had seen the stupid look on his face through her binoculars.  Damn we need men in this army not boys was her thoughts. Pushing the thoughts of that day away she got up and headed for her morning shower.  Happy to find it all to herself and hot water to boot.  This day was better already.  She took a leisurely shower, leisurely  for her , washed her hair well, dried off and rubbed her lavender oil into her body.  Wrapping her town around her. she brushed her teeth then picking up her M16 ran to her hooch to dress.  She would shoot with a towel on if she had to but bringing her fresh clothes to the shower was just not worth it.  That place was always damp.  Dressing quickly she was ready to face the day.  Coffee that is what she needed coffee.  She headed out to the chow hall to get some.  It was funny she almost didn't notice the smell of that damn shit burning behind the head any more.  Vietnam was quiet this morning.  That didn't set well with her.   No one else was in the chow hall right now and she enjoyed her coffee .  She could hear the daily activities elsewhere around the base.  A little space to herself for what ever few minutes she could get was nice.  To soon the day would begin......
