favorite thing about them: harrow was my immediate favorite on introduction! I loved what a massive bitch she was lmao. I love pettiness and competence. the way she’s genuinely pretty nasty and very pathetic and then completely fucks over gideon’s escape attempt?? it’s great

least favorite thing about them: I love harrow but she spent so much of HTN so utterly miserable that there wasn’t quite the GTN era charm to her? I wish she got to be a little bit worse to people, a little bit more conniving. the soup and the g1deon murder attempt definitely helped! I would have liked more of that

Medicine

16. How does your character tolerate pain? How do they handle stress and trauma?

Bentley can handle pain just fine. They can handle stress just fine. Trauma? Nah bruh, they need an emotional support dog and two husbands to get through that shit.

Asher is a dramatic baby because they know Danse will absolutely drop everything to nurse them, even though pain really doesn't bother them. They can handle stress just fine... Until Danse is involved. And they understand the concept that they've gone through traumatic events, but it barely registers with them. Tho they really need some therapy if I'm being real.

Richard handles stress and pain beautifully. He is epically and legendarily bad at handling trauma. His inability to handle trauma is literally the entire reason that Nuclear Family even happened 😂

Gin's pain tolerance is variable, but no matter what she tends to be dramatic about her pain. Handles stress like a goddamn champ- she thinks. Ask her brother and he'll say otherwise. Trauma? She can handle it, she's just gonna be dramatic about it first

17. Does your character have any habits? Any tics, fixations, rituals, superstitions, or dependencies?

I wasn't gonna include Bentley until I saw ✨dependencies✨. Yeah they're dependent on the emotional support from MacCready and Hancock (even when they were only platonic) to help them function in this new strange world. Other than that? They may or may not go to wine to help distract themself.

Idk if fixation is meant as hyperfixation, but you put Asher anywhere near a scrap pile and their inner Scav will pop out. They definitely got in trouble for disappearing into junkyards while on mission and reappearing two hours later covered in gunk with an apron filled with goodies.

Richard has a habit? Tic? Ritual? Of tracing the constellations at night if he's on the road now.

Gin's a smoker. 'Nough said.

18. What's something that always makes your character feel better (physically, emotionally, mentally)?

Hugs always make Bentley feel better. Especially from Duncan. Baby hugs just bring them peace.

Asher always feels better after a smooch. Lil Danse smooch.

Richard is where the Fancy Lad Cakes quirk comes from. You give him a box of those and he will solidly forget anything was wrong as long as those snack cakes last.

You'd think Gin's answers would be a cigarette. But actually it's running. Specifically from X. It's like a fun little game of chase that gives her something else to focus on, and when he catches her she's up high.

Repair

22. What is your character's single most handy trait or skill?

Because Bentley is such an emotional and traumatized person, they're easily underestimated. They figured out early that because they seem so frail, people let their guard down when going after them.

I mentioned this early on in NF, but Danse credits Asher for his continued survival. Anything they upgrade becomes a fuckin legendary item. BOS folks like up to beg them to Midas Touch their shit.

Richard didn't become a Captain over nothing. He's a strategist. He's a big ol' himbo, but when it comes to tackling dungeons hideouts, there's nobody better to have with you.

Gin is a fucking deadeye with any manual or semi-automatic firearm. Good to have if you're running low on rangers, can nail a ragstag through the eye at ranges that would put MacCready to shame.

23. How concerned is your character with practicality? Are they more down-to-earth, grounded, or focused on necessity, or are they more of a dreamer, indulgent, or reckless?

Bentley is very down to earth. They have anxious tendencies but most of their concerns dig them further down than into the clouds.

Asher's so fucking indulgent and reckless. They sneak away from their tanks and stalk strangers across a strange area for a wellness check for fucks sake.

Richard's very focused on necessity, though he's very much a dreamer if he has even the faintest reason to be romantic.

Gin's like Asher. Girl hopped out of a hiding to antagonize a bunch of raiders and then almost toppled off a cliff until X intervened.

24. How quick is your character to forgive? Are they able to earn forgiveness from others easily?

Bentley's very quick to forgive most people, and even faster to earn forgiveness.

Asher is a very spiteful creature. There's a small handful of people who they don't hold grudges with as a rule. Everyone else the will hold a grudge to their grave. This tends to go in both directions.

Richard forgives easy... Earning it tends to be harder tho.

Gin is the opposite of Asher. Forgives easily for most, but if you're in that one percent it's fuckin grudge city. But people tend to forgive her easier because she's got chronic baby face and people assume she's a tweenager.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

Why I like Tsukasa is a question that would require a whole ESSAY. He was the first character I got introduced to snd really got to know - i started the game with wxs main story and right before his torpe event started so it was the first event i really played - and I have a tendency to get attached easily. As in, the first character I get attached to is most likely going to stay my fav throughout everything. Not always but often

There's also just something about him being this. Really well done mix of funny, stupid, impulsive and mature, caring, with a heavy sense of responsibility. You can laugh at him or with him but you can also empathise with him or feel his love and care for others, almost like he's comforting you too. It's the onii-chan vibe. I'm not gonna start dissecting his entire character right now, but I also really appreciate his growth - even within the main story itself but throughout all the events mainly. The way he's growing more open with his feelings - both his own and those for his close ones - and becoming more confident, while also acknowledging his mistakes and LETTING himself make them and grow with them, correcting them and moving on. He's both a fascinating character from story and development point of view but also just has the kind of development I like

And don't get me started on his dynamics with other charscters - that are both fun and fascinating and just. So full of love and passion and care and also silliness. What can I say. You just can't be bored with him

There's also the fact he and I also share some similarities or traits, so it's easy to identify with, and consequently grow closer to him often. He's not my biggest kin or anything, and there's plenty that makes us different, but some key values we agree on. If that makes sense. And there's also some things I just admire in his character that i wish I had, could do. And so. I just. Admire him isn't the right word but I can't find a better one rn? Something of the kind

Anyway yeah just. He's awesome. Stupid loser. I hate him

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

I REALLY like the idea of kasaverse. It's so fun! There's so many different like, versions of Tsukasa from various of his plays/events/sets and all and they all have certain characteristics attached to them and can somehow feel like a separate and the same character simultaneously

I like that there's certain traits of tsukasa that those various "versions" of him represent, some widely accepted by the fandom or some just unique to each fan. It just feels like they're pieces of his personality separated from him and shaped into a smaller piece of himself that you can study in this form, and if you piece all those various tsukasas and their personalities together, that's when you get the full tsukass tenma. It makes him feel so.. developed? Idk how to say it. Its just awesome

I do like to imagine that each different tsukasa from the kasaverse is representative of some trait/part/dream/etc of his in a more exaggerated(?) way. Like you probably noticed I love making hinakasa have the Big Bro Tsukasa vibes ×100. I do feel like hina is just this. Representative of Tsukasa's older sibling caring side more than the others, especially seeing what event he came from. In a similar way Torpe highlights his calmer yet dedicated side - I also like to imagine torpe as the part that gets embarrassed by too many compliments (like that scene with shizuku in pandemonium). Knight can be loyalty, can be determination. Fighting tooth and nail for that happy ending. King is that charisma, ability to bringing people together, the leadership. And others. It's just fun to imagine

Also it just fits the method actor vibe SOO well

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

You know, its stupid. You know that moment when you're asked something and. Immediately forget everything you know on the topic? Yeah.... I know i have many I just never have them on hand when needed... Ironic

He's a mama's boy. He's also very close to her right after Saki and loves to spend time together and buy her gifts and help her out at home. Also his canon bedroom is a lie because he obviously has shining in the dark stars on his ceiling like saki and drawings/sketches and many many photos over his desk and plushies on his bed. Colopale is just a coward

Has freckles and thick fluffy hair but you can see that from my drawings. Always has some kind of bruise from practice on him that he never remembers how he got. He's an early bird that also falls asleep very easily and usually early too, on a schedule. Often dreams but quickly forgets, so he always writes those down as quick as he can in the morning for future reference or exchanges their dreams with Saki over breakfast

Always has to do something with his hands, especially when frustrated or nervous. Especially enjoys playing with others' hair. Had a tendency to bite his nails, so saki taught him to paint his nails to prevent that. Currently has wxs colours painted nails as ordered by emu just as the rest of the troupe. Also knows how to braid hair and do makeup thanks to Saki. Enjoys baking a lot and sometimes stress bakes things. He can't swim very well

Also a silly thing but we know hes bad at games overall but he's actually a master at playing word games. Especially Scrabble, with that dumb vast and complicated vocabulary of his. You cannot tell me Tsukasa "I am valiantly trying to confront this unscrupulous spider preventing me from enjoying my luncheon" Tenma would not win at Scrabble (I have an old comic on that)

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

I'm gonna be honest recently it's been harder to choose between all polysho tsks dynamics, but I'm gonna say ruikasa because it's the first ship I got introduced and attached to, by the friends who introduced me to the game. And just. the TRUST man. The TRUST

They've got both a funny and deep dynamic and big influence on each other ever since the beginning that can't be denied. I won't really talk much about then right now but I just simply appreciate the way they push each other to be better, to keep trying, to give their all and not hold back, while making sure the other doesn't stop taking care of himself and is aware he's believed in and trusted. Also they are just two insane weirdos who do stupid shit together and it's funny

😤Your Most Specific Nitpick About Your Fave (anything from "Gareth would not have a beard" to "this is basically a different guy")

Can't think of anything that is too specific, and I don't have one single fave + my faves keep rotating. But I'll say that to me it's very important that Arthur is, overall, a good guy or at least someone that comes off as such. This can be interpreted in a lot of ways, but what I mean mostly is that to add moral greyness and make him complex there is no need to make him a grade A douche. I feel a lot of interpretations paint him as being pretty bad or straight out awful so they can make other characters more sympathetic, or justify Guinevere's adultery, or just to make the story grittier or whatever. I understand the attractiveness in making him bad to contrast this idea that we have of him. But losing complexity is always a narrative loss IMO. Try and reconcile him being a genuinely caring leader with the May day babies thing. Now, that's interesting! Similar things could be said about a lot of other charscters TBH.

okay i finally actually listen to amnesty and caught up just in time for the finale! it was really good, but i was actually a little disappointed in the second to last episode when duck revealed his real name because my first thought was “oh my god no this means he isn’t transsss” well i’ve decided he actually still is and here’s why: i think he started going by duck as an easy to explain away gender neutral nickname of sorts (we’ve all been there) and he decided he really liked it and so that’d just been what everyone calls him but after he got a little older and went to legally change his name he decided to pick something more serious as his legal name, but like just still felt weird being called anything but duck so that’s still what he went by but then as he grew closer to everyone and knew they accepted him, he finally felt like he didn’t have to hide behind this nickname so much (although he still prefers duck)

(also when i say i was upset i don’t mean i was lik upset at justin for doing it or anything because i think it was a great choice and made for some great goofs, it was just like aw fuck, but like that’s the great thing about taz is like there’s a lot of room for you to make of it what you want and i’m going to make duck trans)

"Does a character deserve this?" is the incorrect question writers and fans should ask themselves when writing any sort of story; that sort of method is what gives way to arbitrary storytelling practices, such as deus ex machina or the aforementioned idiot plots. Within the confines of the story, Adam was always marked for death because the progression of Blake and later Yang hinges upon it. -YFA

I’m a writer and I’m gonna take you to school and to church.

“Does the character deserve this ?” is actually a very important question to ask when deciding where the plot will go. It’s basically asking “Is this character worth the time/budget/cutting other things out to make room for them ?” but it’s also important narratively. Is the punishment the character receives equal to their deeds ?

There’s a lot of behind the scenes a lot of people don’t consider because they’re not writers themselves, or not professional writers.

Charscters that are made to die can be very compelling. Like Prim from Hunger Games. Her death represents a lot of things that could have essays written about it but that’s not the point here. The point is that the death was always planned, and that’s better than shoving it in last minute.

Also arbitrary ? Writing is in and of itself arbitrary, there are no real rules. But I digress, let’s look at what Adam and Ironwood’s deaths do.

Adam’s death does in fact further Blake, Yang and Ilia’s arcs the most. Other characters are affected but not as much. He served a purpose, beyond that, what was he really ?

Y’all tend to romanticize Adam and forget that he was always an incompetent idiot that was using the White Fang and Sienna’s charisma to prop himself up. He’s fine having no narrative purpose beyond being a personal antagonist. There’s really no ‘great potential’ that was missed, he’s just a conventionally attractive male character with a cool weapon. But that seems to absolve any character of all sins so it tracks.

Ironwood, of course he was destined to fail.

One of the very first lines of the series, spoken by Salem herself.

We are told that he’s going to fail, we know it. He died to cement an idea as well as further Winter, Robyn, Qrow and to a slightly lesser extent the rest of the main cast’s arcs. That’s plenty of purpose.

Not much potential here either, just a stubborn and paranoid man who taught he could use brute force and cold logic to solve all his problems despite being told that it won’t work. Most of it was probably stroking his own ego. But since he’s a conventionally attractive man, that doesn’t really matter.

But there’s another side, a more important side.

They were both abusers. RWBY is consistent in punishing abusers and not giving them even the slightest chance at redemption. This should be done more often.

The reason people like you sit there and talk about ‘wasted potential’ is that you weren’t victims of abuse. But for those of us who were or even still are, stories where abusers are punished are important, they’re comforting, they give us hope.

And that’s what RWBY is ultimately about, whether you like it or not.
