Johann Damon Wolf was born on 13. November 1800 to Johann Wolfgang Wolf and Bilidruda Margarete Wolf, the younger of two brothers, in the duchy of Braunschweig, Niedersachsen, Deutschland. His mother was a lower-level witch, his father a practitioner, and Damon was initiated into his family’s Craft traditions when he was thirteen years old.

Growing up, Damon never bothered to hide his affinity for the Craft. This made him the favorite of his mother and father (along with his disregard for authority and rules) —and it made him the target of his older brother Christian’s jealousy. Christian was the good boy of the family, the one who followed the rules and did his best to blend in—as light and fair-haired as Damon was dark. As befitting his name, Christian was the only member of his pagan family to convert to Christianity and take its teachings and beliefs to heart.

When Damon was twenty-one, Christian married a local girl named Anja on the 21st of April, 1822. Their courtship had only lasted a month before they were married, but they were genuinely in love with each other, had grown up together, and for the most part Damon did his best to stay out of his brother and sister-in-law’s lives. Unfortunately, over the years Anja became sexually frustrated in her marriage to Christian, and rumors about Damon’s various affairs had swirled around for ages—leading Anja to set her sights on Damon to satisfy her needs instead. It didn’t help that Damon was all dark hair and eyes in comparison to his blond-haired brother, held little regard for the Church, and she’d seen him practicing with runes (and his witchcraft) whenever he could without caring if anyone saw him or not. If Anja was already going to hell for lust, she might as well enjoy it while committing adultery with her husband’s brother in order to conceive a child.

In early March of 1827, Anja finally made her move and confronted Damon in his house, pushed him down onto the sofa, and against his protests revealed that she wanted his child instead of Christian’s, as he could give her what Christian could not. With her on top and having taken him by surprise, Damon had no choice but to let her have her way with him. After, when she left and Damon had scrubbed himself clean as thoroughly as possible, it was his mother’s wolf familiar, Freki, who comforted him.

It wasn’t until Walpurgisnacht 1827 that Anja had her wish granted. She’d disguised herself, worn a mask, and sought Damon out at a bonfire ritual to honor the witches’ holiday, making sure it was him before leading him away. That night she conceived her first child, born nine months later on Imbolc 1828, whom she named Paul. She waited a few months before approaching Damon again, conceiving another child on June 3rd—this one was a girl, named Marie. Anja passed both her children off as Christian’s and Damon as their uncle, never telling Christian that Marie and Paul were not biologically his.

In 1830, after the July Revolution, Duke Charles II was forced to abdicate his role as the duke of Braunschweig. That September, the ducal palace was set on fire and destroyed by an angry mob; Charles II was succeeded as duke of Braunschweig by his brother, William VII. On November 13th of that year, Damon celebrated his thirtieth birthday.

Five years later, shortly after Damon’s 35th birthday, Christian’s resentment and jealousy of his younger brother had reached a boiling point, and on the fifteenth of November he publicly accused his brother of the crime of witchcraft, of using magic to seduce the women Damon had taken to his bed. Over the next month, Christian began slowly turning the townspeople—those he could convince, anyway—against his brother, and on 10. December 1835, Damon was held on trial. A jury found him not guilty; incensed at the verdict, Christian fully turned against his brother, disowning Damon and forming a plan with his closest friends. Three days later, Christian led a small mob against Damon, captured him, tied him up to a pyre, and set him on fire.

When Damon succumbed to his wounds, his spirit awoke to find himself in the netherworld of evil—the Underworld—whole and healed. He was offered the option by the Powers That Be—the Infernal Council—to be resurrected as a Darklighter, ein Wächter der Dunkelheit, and serve evil by seducing female Future Whitelighters—guardians and guides for good witches—and procreating more future Darklighters.

Damon reluctantly agreed and was reborn as an evil magical being. As a lower-level Darklighter, he was apprenticed to an upper-level Darklighter named Scar to learn more about his powers and perfect his evil.

On the same night he was transformed into a Darklighter after his death, Damon visited his brother Christian for two reasons: first, to scare him into thinking that Damon was a ghost; second, to reveal to him that Paul and Marie were Christian’s nephew and niece, that Anja had gone to Damon to sire her children—though Damon did not reveal that his part in the matter had been against his will.

Before long, Damon had completed his training under Scar, risen from a lower-level to upper-level Darklighter, and by 1840 he had left the Underworld and established himself in the southern kingdom of Bayern (Bavaria). He moved back and forth for a while between his Underworld lair and Whitelighter-to-be assignments in Bavaria, keeping one eye on the state of politics: Kaiser Wilheim I united all the German-speaking kingdoms and duchies into one nation, Deutschland, in 1871. (At least once he went back to visit his father on Wolfgang’s deathbed; by this time, he was so fully committed to his service of the Underworld and evil that his father disowned Damon and Christian for the latter’s role in the former’s death years earlier.) Four years after the formation of Germany, Damon relocated to the United States and set up on a cattle ranch in Texas. It was here, living in Texas from 1875 – 1886, that Damon fully realized he was sexually attracted to men as well as women and was able to finally act upon his desires to be with another man.

History would repeat itself, as once again Damon came under fire for accusations of witchcraft when tensions flared up in the nearest town to the ranch where he worked as a cowhand. This time he was arrested and almost killed by a mob, set to hang him by torchlight, but he was able to escape using his powers and steal a horse on the way out. He was injured during his escape and nursed back to health by a solitary witch; thanking her by leaving her with her life, he returned to his lair in the Underworld for the next several months and remained there whenever he wasn’t called upon by the Darklighter Elders to seduce yet another Whitelighter-to-be.

By 1887, Damon decided he’d had enough of the Wild West in America and settled back in his native country, this time in the city-state of Berlin. While there he encountered two newly-fledged Darklighters by the names of Adrian and Reiner. During the 1920s, Berlin was the unofficial capital for European queer culture (with plenty of queer Americans traveling there as well), and the three Darklighters bonded quickly over the misadventures they would find themselves in (many of which resulted in Adrian and Reiner having to save Damon’s ass). It was during this time that Damon re-encountered another Darklighter he’d known while living in Bavaria, one who had quickly become Damon’s arch nemesis and had been a count when mortal: Josef Erich von Sachsen.

The stay in Berlin during the Weimarer Republik would not last, however. In the early 1930s, Adolf Hitler (an Austrian) became Chancellor of Germany and started the Second World War. Long before the Americans became involved in 1941, Damon was doing whatever he could to help out the civilian resistance against the Nazis, spreading disorder and chaos among members of the NSDAP and doing his best to sabotage the war effort. He even went so far as to contact Whitelighters and good witches he knew when the persecutions started in earnest, potentially placing his afterlife at risk. Damon eventually forced himself to get out of the country when upper-level demons and the Darklighter Elders started noticing his actions, relocating again to the United States in 1942—only to find that attitudes in the USA were not much better. As an ethnic German and native German speaker, Damon found himself the target of anti-German sentiment and quickly learned that German-, Italian-, and Japanese-Americans were being sent to internment camps—with conditions at those camps nearly akin to die Konzentrationslager in Nazi-occupied Europe. As a result, he was forced to use his voice-mimicking ability to adopt a Standard American accent and his language skills to become fluent in American English fast. (With the Red Scare occurring a decade later in the 1950s, Damon would again see this form of hysteria and censorship and decided to spend the better part of the fifties in his Underworld lair.)

In 1989, Damon and the two Darklighters he had befriended in 1920s Berlin, Adrian and Reiner, formed a band. Calling themselves Sons of the Dark, their sound is primarily gothic rock with influences from industrial and EBM; later German music critics classified it as Neue Deutsche Härte. Their first album, Alptraum, was released in 1993; two more albums followed in 1995 and 2001—after that, they stuck to releasing singles and such online with limited live appearances.

Around October 1998, in anticipation of the Charmed Ones powers’ becoming active, Damon’s superiors stationed him in San Francisco area. He’s not thrilled about it, especially since he has zero plans on attracting the Charmed Ones’ attention and no desire to be vanquished. However, he certainly doesn’t mind Sons of the Dark occasionally having gigs at P3, a popular nightclub owned by the Charmed One Piper Halliwell.

Still, as of yet he’s been lucky to avoid going up against the Power of Three—and he wants it to stay that way.

that’s something else that i find really interesting about the array of powers here! in the original show, the powers fit the girls who got them. prue was very type a, bossy, needed to be in control of her own life, the leader, and so she got the most physical of the starting powers, the ability to literally move things with her mind. this is a power that surfaced with her anger. piper was the people pleaser, the mollifier, the peacekeeper, the one who wanted everyone to get along and just wanted to keep her family together, and she was also the most afraid, initially, of the realities that came with being a witch--so she got the power to freeze time (on a smaller scale than mel, at the beginning), for which her panic and anxiety was a major trigger. as for phoebe, she was the heart of the show from the start--bold and reckless and a little bit wild, but also the one most likely to wear her heart on her sleeve, to be open about what she felt and to reach out to others and want to help them, regardless of the consequences (a trait that, if memory serves, got her and her sisters in trouble on more than one occasion--and also saved their lives multiple times). so phoebe was gifted the power of premonition--she could literally see people who were in danger, who needed her help, and she was the one who could rally her sisters and help save the day.

it seems to me that they’re going a little... opposites attract, with the new charmed ones’ powers. mel, who is so angry all the time--because of her mother’s death, but also because of the sheer injustice of the world in which she lives--has a power that is hampered by that anger. she can’t use it when she’s pissed, because her power is primarily meant to diffuse situations, not escalate them. while, powers-wise, she’s clearly meant to be the piper of the family, i think she more aligns with prue, and it’s interesting because i don’t think prue would have fared much better with piper’s power than mel is managing right now. maggie, on the other hand, is the clear phoebe analogue--she’s the baby of the family, she’s the bold one, determined to live her own life, and who chafes under her sister’s need for control (something that pushed phoebe herself out of the halliwell manor and all the way across the country before gram’s death brought her back), and she was given the power of telepathy.

it’s interesting, because this, too, seems... almost at odds with her personality thus-far--somewhat self-absorbed, though not without reason, but because she’s been so focused on trying to find her own path, her own place in the world where she won’t have to suffer the constant reminders that her sister has never stopped thinking about what if my selfish little sister had just answered her fucking phone that night, that she hasn’t taken much time to really see the people around her, to see if they’re people she even wants to fit in with in the first place... until she’s literally forced into their heads as her telepathy slowly begins to surface (and seeing her learn to control that will be interesting moving forward).

macy is somewhat harder to parse, because she hasn’t gotten as much focus in the episode, and she is also new to the family in general. unlike phoebe, who had a mountain of baggage to unload with both of her sisters in the original show, macy’s whole deal right now is that there isn’t any baggage--which is, in itself, a burden all its own. because i get the feeling that all her life, she’s longed for a family, for a sense of belonging her father just couldn’t give her--and now she’s found out that the mother she spent her life believing was dead had been alive all long... and yet she missed out on knowing her because she just happened to die right when macy moved to town. and yet she has two whole sisters she never knew about... but she’s a stranger to them. i think that she’s going to have a seasonal arc of uncertainty, of insecurity, because how can she really say she belongs when she constantly feels like a third wheel?

i think she’s going to eventually find her place with the sisters, and while her situation--being a half-sister the others never knew existed--mirrors paige, i find her most similar to piper, and it makes her being the one with telekinesis even more interesting. because macy? she does not like things she can’t explain. she threw a lamp at a man with her mind, watched him catch it without looking and then disappear without a trace, and she still tried to reason that there must be some ‘scientific’ explanation for it all. she used sodium bicarbonate to perform a demon exorcism. she needs things to make sense. she also seems to have some of piper’s peacekeeping tendency, partly from ‘i’m a neutral party here’ because she is so new to the family, and partly because she doesn’t want to make waves--she just wants to belong. and yet she’s the one with the most physical ability--the one who can move things with her mind, knock a bitch off his feet if she so chose, who would probably be the most use in a fight... but is the least inclined to actually seek fights out. (unlike prue, who may as well have had ‘confrontational’ be her middle name--and i say that with all the love that i possess in my heart.)

Conquering the Crown: Who Will Be The Next Miss Universe Philippines 2021?

Are you ready, Universe?

Tomorrow, the next Miss Universe Philippines will be crowned in Bohol, and I'd like to share my bets with you (as well as my thoughts on more candidates other than my Top 6. :)

But first, I have to admit I do have a bias for Cavite, Aklan, and Laguna because

1) Cavite is my birthplace and where I spent the first 16 years of my life;

2) Aklan is where my five dear brothers are from;

3) Laguna is where I spent seven eventful years as a UPLB student.

However, these biases aren't the sole reason I'm rooting for these representatives. I believe Victoria Velasquez Vincent, Leren Bautista, and Christelle Abello are really among the best candidates of this year's batch! VVV is actually my top one, followed by Katrina Dimaranan, Maureen Wroblewitz, and Ayn Bernos.

One of the smartest and most eloquent candidates of this batch, Victoria Velasquez Vincent from Cavite has emerged as the Interview Challenge winner, and rightly so. But she caught my attention even before that phase; her Runway Challenge was really impressive as well. As a heritage conservationist and architect, she's committed to solving environmental problems across the globe.

I really wish the winner would be a pure Filipino, but it so happened that VVV impressed me the most. She's half-Irish and half-Filipino, raised in New Zealand.

Now this one's a powerhouse. A pageant veteran, model, actress, and television host, I think (and thousands of others think, too) Katrina Dimaranan from Taguig is the most prepared of them all. She was appointed as USA's Miss Supranational 2018 and finished as 1st Runner Up at the world stage. She was also one of the title holders way back in Binibining Pilipinas 2012.

Kat's charming, authentic personality captivates anyone watching her or listening to her voice. You can see this through the way she nailed the challenges. And though she grew up in the US, she is a pure Filipina.

This woman needs no introduction--Maureen Wroblewitz, the winner of Asia's Next Top Model Season 5. Born in Saudi Arabia, she's a half-Filipina, half-German model and actress who is now representing Pangasinan as she fights for the crown. She has emerged as the Casting Challenge winner, but aside from that, all the results of the other challenges prove how excellent and enthralling she is as a model. Her intelligence can also be seen with every answer she delivers during Q&As.

The most inspiring candidate of all, Ayn Bernos of San Juan, proves that barriers can be broken and stereotypes can be shattered. Proudly standing at 5'3 with morena skin, Ayn represents the majority of Filipino people who are not influenced by foreign blood. I've closely followed her journey from the day she submitted her pageant application, and I'm so happy for her every step of the way. Her millions of followers on TikTok surely feel the same. We feel seen, we feel represented, we feel inspired to also reach for our dreams--no matter how impossible they may seem.

Ayn is a natural Filipina beauty, and she glowed further as she embarked on the road to the crown. Her wit, intelligence, and cheerful personality radiate in every appearance she makes, whether it's an interview or a commercial special by some of MUPH's sponsors.

With enchanting eyes, a driven attitude, and several beauty pageant titles under her belt, Leren Mae Bautista of Laguna is one of the most prepared candidates to represent the nation at the Miss Universe pageant this December.

I started knowing her through the tarpaulins in LB eight years ago. I was still in college, and Leren just won the crown of Miss Los Banos. She conquered the Binibining Laguna title as well. Since then, I knew this classic Filipina beauty and brain would one day captivate the world. Years later, she has placed as a 2nd Runner Up in Miss Globe 2019 and won in other pageants, too. Today, she's aiming for the universe and we all know she's ready.

Armed with an unstoppable grit, this dreamer put her life in the US on pause to once again fight for the crown of Miss Universe. Christelle Abello of Aklan has placed in the top 16 of last year's MUPH, and she has come back stronger this time around. Though she wasn't part of the Top 7 in the Interview Challenge, I think she's one of the most fluent and confident candidates.

Although she was born in America, she embodies the beauty of a real Filipina. I have to mention that I'm not a fan of her evening gown's design, but she still carried it well.

So there, now you know my Top 6! :) They've been my Top 6 for several weeks now, but this doesn't mean I'm not impressed by other candidates.

Michele Angela Okol of Siargao Island nailed the Preliminary Interviews! I haven't watched all the interviews since the KTX pass is just too expensive for me, but I was able to see a few on YouTube. And of them all, Michele's answers were the best. She was certain with her answers. Ingrid "Sam" Santamaria of Paranaque and Chela Grace Falconer of Misamis Oriental are some of the smartest and most fluent candidates as well. Sam placed second in the Interview Challenge.

The Filipina beauty of Janela Cuaton of Albay, Maria Corazon Abalos of Mandaluyong, Mirjan Hipolito of Angeles City, Simone Nadine Bornilla of Marinduque, and Princess Krista Singh of Pasig are some of the most outstanding in their batch. But I think the most outstanding beauty of all, is Jasmine Umali of Manila. She's like a living Mulan, or Barbie. And all these phenomenal women are smart and graceful, too!

Anyhow, if Gianne Asuncion of Cagayan Province wasn't diagnosed with COVID-19, for sure she would make it here and she'd be one of my bets. I hope she comes back next year, same with Maica Cabling Martinez of Nueva Ecija, who didn't make it in this year's Top 30.

You might be wondering why I haven't mentioned Steffi Rose Aberasturi of Cebu Province yet.

Honestly, I can't deny she's gorgeous from head to toe, well-prepared, talented, and confident, but I just cannot stomach supporting someone who supports Rodrigo Duterte. If she wins tomorrow, I will not bash her--I can see why she's one of the frontrunners--but I just cannot see myself rooting for her because of her political stance :( If she was not a DDS though, she would easily be one of my top bets, maybe my top 4 or top 5.

Steffi carries every outfit effortlessly, and her beauty can go from sweet and endearing to regal and fierce. I wish, before the national elections, her eyes would be opened to the atrocities of Duterte's war on drugs. (I also find Bea Luigi Gomez beautiful, but she said during the preliminary interview that the government is doing well. So, I'm afraid she might be a DDS, too. I hope not)

I know, people tell us to separate the pageant from political views, but the thing is, when a DDS gains more influence, they can influence voters to support Duterte, too. That's a real danger our country can no longer afford.

As for Kisses Delavin of Masbate, I'm inspired by her drive to pursue her dreams, not letting bashers stop her. But I just cannot see her wearing the crown, sorry :( I'm not a basher, I acknowledge she is beautiful, sweet, talented, kind, and smart. But I just don't see the fierce, palaban aura that we all need in a Miss Universe candidate. Never thought being baby-faced could be a disadvantage.

But anyway, if Ayn is slaying while breaking barriers and stereotypes, why can't Kisses, right? Kisses did well in every interview she handled. Although, I really didn't like her runway challenge where her hands were stuck on her waist. Good thing her walk improved in the swimsuit competition. Despite getting bashed and doubted, she fights with courage and passion, and that's something we can all learn from--whether we're part of Kissables or not.

Who will win tomorrow? I just can't wait to find out :)

I really wish I have the budget for a KTX pass so I could watch the coronation night in real-time. Sigh. That's 600 pesos! I'd rather spend it on samgyup. HAHA my love for food beats my love for pageants, even when I once dreamt to be Miss Universe myself lol.
