Hi, I’m charlottesometimes on AO3 and I have another blog called avatars-and-firelords. You and I have talked briefly on AO3. I just wanted to ask you here, since a general question like this doesn’t necessarily fit on an AO3 chapter, what you like the most about writing fic about Zuko falling apart. You do it so well!
Oh hey!! Thank you, I would never have put your usernames together!
First: that is so kind of you <3
God, this is hard to answer.
Writing the low points is absolutely cathartic. I think sometimes you just really need a character's physical or mental state to mirror what you're feeling emotionally. It makes you feel seen, even if you're, you know, the writer. I think that sharp sadness we feel when we read hurt/comfort is the sharpness of that story striking against the part of ourselves that feels that way. Even if we've never experienced anything like it.
And then the craft of it is something I enjoy. Figuring out the arc, where his low point will be, and then thinking through how the story turns, the little lines and observations that knit it together and take you to that space where it all hurts... And it's nice to surprise yourself with the resolution.
When I start I basically never know how Zuko is going to get out of it, so it's like a puzzle I have to work through. Ex, when I got the idea for the end of "I live in a cage" I was *so* excited, hands clapping, squeeeee. (No spoilers but: squeeeeeee)
Thank you for asking! I always love these <3

"The people seemed so close So many other names Sometimes I'm dreaming Where all the other people dance Sometimes I'm dreaming Charlotte sometimes" #bluemonday #whenwewereyoung #closetous #boysdontycry #thecure #charlottesometimes #lesenfantsdurock https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmleF4tEyj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

She felt as if she was suspended between these times, the past, this present, that future of her own, belonging to all and none of them.
A beautiful 60s Puffin cover for this classic children’s book, the inspiration for the song of the same name by The Cure.

Hi! Looking for a fic where Bucky was a college student with a drinking problem who kept hosting parties in Steve’s backyard, thinking it was empty. Steve is in a wheelchair and never leaves his house/doesn’t have any friends. They eventually become friends, and Steve tries to help bucky with his drug addiction but they fight and Bucky runs away. Natasha and Steve rescue him and Steve tells him that he’s in a wheelchair because he crashed his motorcycle trying to commit suicide. Anybody know it?
This one?
Backyard Pool by charlottesometimes (complete | 59,662 | T)
Steve is disabled, and lives as a shut-in by choice. As long as he's in his perfectly handicapped-accessible house, he doesn't need any kind of help from anybody.
Bucky is a college kid with a past he doesn't like to remember, and he's the life of just about any party: Comes early and stays late. Going to class, though? There's really not time for that.
When Bucky realizes that the lushly landscaped, heated backyard pool abutting his college university's campus is never used, and seems to be attached to an empty house, he starts throwing parties there.
But … it's Steve's pool. And Steve catches them at it from the beginning.
He doesn't say anything. He doesn't mind. Watching their antics through a crack in the curtains is the most human contact Steve might ever be likely to have.
