Il y a des lundis soirs de novembre froids & pluvieux qui tournent bien. Quand Thomas m’appelle à la nuit tombée pour me proposer une place pour The Cure, comme ça, là, au débotté. Par exemple. Et on se retrouve lui & moi en fringants quarantenaires (et non quinqua comme ironisait mon frangin, rageux) frétillants dans la fosse comme des poissons dans l’eau, bienheureux. Ça faisait si longtemps que j’avais pas cassé ma voix (& les oreilles d’un voisin étrangement impavide)… La voix de Bob, elle, ne change pas & permet le voyage dans le temps (pourvu qu’on ferme les yeux…). Parce qu’il y en a eu des concerts de The Cure dans ma vie… Mais aussi quelques tables de lycée gravées avec cette écriture "Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me", entretenant ainsi une correspondance mystico-absurde avec un fan d’une autre classe… Et le générique des "Enfants du rock”, avec ces paires d’yeux rockeux “Just Like Heaven" comme le T-shirt de Sionann (jalousie). Et ces manifs où je suivais les mecs avec la tête de Chabat dans "Prête-moi ta main" (objectivement très ressemblants)… Et l’affiche de "Boys don’t cry" qui m’a accompagnée jusqu’au prochain déménagement… Gamine, j’avais demandé à mon père ce que voulait dire "boys don’t cry" : "garçons ne pleurez pas" ? Moué, presque. Voilà en tout cas une chanson qui vieillit bien & je me faisais d’ailleurs la réflexion que Robert était en fait très fleur bleue (quand il ne parle pas d’araignée)… Cute Cure. Et puis Thomas & moi nous espérions "Charlotte sometimes"… Moi pour faire une spéciale dédicace à l’amie Françoise, la "Charlotte" de son amoureux curiste : j’ai filmé vite vite un petit bout (parce que c’est chiant de se retrouver "lost in a forest" of phones) : this one is for you, Françoise. Et pour Thomas. Et pour moi. Et pour nous. Avec ce petit goût vintage de y a longtemps. Hi, I’m charlottesometimes on AO3 and I have another blog called avatars-and-firelords. You and I have talked briefly on AO3. I just wanted to ask you here, since a general question like this doesn’t necessarily fit on an AO3 chapter, what you like the most about writing fic about Zuko falling apart. You do it so well!

God, this is hard to answer.

Writing the low points is absolutely cathartic. I think sometimes you just really need a character's physical or mental state to mirror what you're feeling emotionally. It makes you feel seen, even if you're, you know, the writer. I think that sharp sadness we feel when we read hurt/comfort is the sharpness of that story striking against the part of ourselves that feels that way. Even if we've never experienced anything like it.

And then the craft of it is something I enjoy. Figuring out the arc, where his low point will be, and then thinking through how the story turns, the little lines and observations that knit it together and take you to that space where it all hurts... And it's nice to surprise yourself with the resolution.

When I start I basically never know how Zuko is going to get out of it, so it's like a puzzle I have to work through. Ex, when I got the idea for the end of "I live in a cage" I was *so* excited, hands clapping, squeeeee. (No spoilers but: squeeeeeee)

I’ve been collecting links to my favorite Peter Pettigrew fics for a while now. The latest brilliant fic I read from @blackcestfest spurred me to move this list over to tumblr. (Thank you to @consistentsquash for sending me some of these links and chatting about Peter with me, and to the redditors who posted on this thread!)

Some of these fics are a bit dark and many contain content warnings.

The Break and the Fall by @allalrightagain Regulus/Peter. An in-depth character exploration where the answer to what makes Peter tick is still such a mystery. Written for a tear-jerker fest and succeeds in making you care about Peter and Regulus's canon-compliant fates.

The Cost of Survival by @vdoshu​. Barty/Peter. Peter is fully real and sympathetic while making all the wrong choices. We learn that Barty and the Death Eaters are indeed wrong for him, although it doesn't feel that way in the narrative because every step Peter takes and every thought he has makes perfect, relatable sense. Barty and Peter are well matched and I wish there were more fics for these two!

Bullied by charlottesometimes. Dark fic! We start with unpleasantness during the Marauders' school days for both Severus and Peter, and we end with unpleasantness related to Voldemort's war. Neither Peter nor Severus are nice, but they are so delightful in their horribleness.

The Age of Lies by TheDivineComedian. Peter is not a psychopath. He just wants to destroy the Marauders, who might deserve it. Not a happy ending for Peter, but the first fic I ever read that made me appreciate his perspective.

fumbled through a row of stars by justprompts. Time-travel fix-it fic starring Peter. It's lovely to see him get the hero treatment wrapped in a familiar package.

The Forsaken Fidelius by oihdsfx. An action-adventure story starring Peter! A different retelling of the story we all thought we knew.

Remain in Light by veeagainst. One chapter in a wolfstar fic, I didn't read the rest of the fic because wolfstar is not my thing, but this chapter is Peter's story and it's good.

Don't Waste It by Sarah1281. Peter gets a second chance and doesn't waste it, but no one will ever have a clue. Peter deserves better from his friends, but it shows the best part of him that he doesn't need them to do better.

we lay together on a cold hard floor by tarteaucitron. A Severus/Peter story! Again nothing changes from the canon outcome but that's part of its charm. Peter’s life philosophy is really well fleshed out and manages to be super compelling even while the reader knows it’s going to lead to bad times.

The Truth is Subjective by iwasbotwp. A Peter/Regulus story. Peter is disillusioned when he realizes he has shitty friends. Regulus Black is there to help/not help. You can really see Peter as a future Death Eater in this.

And the most recent to round this out!  Alphard's Favourite by @thistlecatfics. Lots of content warnings on this one, but the Peter is so good. He’s the odd one of out the Marauders without that dynamic being exaggerated; he’s messed up and complex and both a very good and a very bad friend.
