Failed once again to go into Galway City without spending money at Charlie Byrne’s, but am already enamoured of this dual biography of Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley. Romantic Outlaws was passed onto me by a very good friend, @keeperofpages and I have to admit, sat on my TBR for a while as I was intimidated by how large it was! However, once I eventually picked it up, I found it difficult to then put it down. The writing style is both intelligent and engaging and I learned so much more about these fascinating women than I had ever expected to. ⁣ ⁣ This is a nonfiction book exploring the lives of Mary Wollstonecraft, writer, philosopher and advocate for women’s rights and her daughter, Mary Shelley, writer most famously of the novel Frankenstein. With each alternating chapter we hear from each of the Mary’s in turn as the author explores their respective careers, their individual triumphs and their aching sadnesses. ⁣ ⁣ I left Romantic Outlaws feeling much more educated and informed about two women who were each pioneers in their own way. It was terrible to read about their private tragedies (which I had been completely unaware of), but it gave me an ever greater respect for how they managed to weather these times in their lives. ⁣ ⁣ Reading a book like this only gives me a greater hunger for more information about Wollstonecraft and Shelley. They were passionate, fiercely determined and of course, majorly less appreciated in their time than they should have been. Ayer les pregunté sobre las mujeres que admiraban, hoy quiero hablarles sobre dos de las mías. Mary Shelly y Mary Wollstonecraft. La primera la conocemos por Frankestein, la segunda por Vindicación de los derechos de la mujer, es considerada como la primera feminista moderna, y para los que no sabian, son madre e hija.⠀ Hace años leí una biografía que me encantó. Los capítulos están intercalados, empieza con la niñez de Wollstonecraft después con la de Shelly, luego su adolescencia de una y así sucesivamente.⠀ Desgraciadamente a pesar de que Wollstonecraft es madre de Shelly,⠀ ellas no llegaron a conocerse, Wollstonecraft murió en el parto, pero Shelly fue influenciada por los artículos de su madre, gracias a que su padre los tenía en casa.
