1x01 / twelve oh one
TERESA:
Okay, so–it’s recording. Cool .
Um. It’s Wednesday. It’s been nine days since–eight days, maybe? –well, if you’re listening, at this point, you know what it was–Benji says we’re gonna publish this, but, like, no. That’s–that’s ridiculous. This is for science.
Or our memoirs. Whatever.
We’ve–the seven of us have decided to keep a log. Of what’s been going on.
Um. So. Cool. Name and deets, just in case some more weird memory shit goes down–My name’s Teresa. I’m eighteen. I’m an Aries, I like bowling and shitty pop music, and only mostly ironically. That enough fluff? I’m a freshman at, ah, Lands College, here in town, and. Studying journalism, with a minor in women’s studies, uh–anything else–I feel like this would be a better story if I start showing, rather than telling.
Or, like. Telling stories rather than just reading out my dating profile. Because that’s lame.
My dating profile’s actually–it’s a lot more detailed than that. I’m on, like, seven different sites, and every profile is. Very Different.
(text notification sound)
Anj, stop–stop listening in! You–you–dude, take a nap.
So. Anyway. Here’s what we know.
(long beat)
That was good, right? A good joke? That’s something. Um. Cuz we don’t know very much at all. There’s something there, I swear, like, I rehearsed that bit in the bathroom mirror this morning, and I was thinking, no, I won’t pull that, but–
But. Back to the point.
Y’know how, in movies, people are always like, “Nobody knows except for us?”
That’s so exclusive. So presumptuous. We don’t know if people are lying. We haven’t spoken to every person on the planet–we haven’t even spoken to anyone outside of Maryland. Outside of town. Like. We’ve watched news, but God knows, some of those conspiracies about hypnosis through CNN are real, or whatever. Y’know? Like–those conspiracies are almost exclusively believed in by, like, flat-earthing racists, so, like, they’re probably, definitely super wrong, but–I was making a joke and I’m overthinking it now. Cool.
Anyway. We don’t know who knows. Maybe someone in, like, Caracas, knows? Maybe someone in–you get my point–knows.
Or maybe we’re being Truman Showed. Wouldn’t be the worst theory to have come out of this.
I would–well, I’d hate it, but one time, back in middle school, the public library did these–these movie nights for teenagers, right? And, so, uh, a bunch of us were there, and I was sitting with Angie, cuz she was–she was the only person I knew there, of course, and she was sitting with these kids, like–uh, from the hippie school she had taken in, and–one of them was AJ, I know, and one was Charlotte. but the others, I don’t see anymore.
But anyway, she was, like, starry-eyed at the idea of her life being a TV show without her knowing. At the idea of unintentional stardoms. So maybe she’ll get a kick out of that theory.
Here’s something: I was working on my campaign notes earlier, cuz the group’s meeting tomorrow, should meet tomorrow  and I didn’t really–I didn’t like a few of the potentials, so, whatever. Irrelevant.
I checked the time, and–well. It was twelve oh one. And two minutes later, it was still twelve oh one. And now, it’s still twelve oh one.
I thought maybe my laptop was being bad again? But it said the same on my phone, and on the wall clock.
The app says time is passing. It’s been longer than fifty-nine seconds.
It’s still twelve oh one, though, is the thing. Which isn’t great, all things considered.
But, we’ll catch up on that later.
Here’s the big thing. I went back to the beach last night to see if I could recreate what happened alone, and, uh–at least. I think I did. I don’t remember going, but, uh, Angie says I did, and AJ said that when he was closing at work, he saw me walking towards it. But I didn’t–I didn’t go.
There are sixty-nine–which, yeah, nice, that’s the sex number, whatever–sticky notes on the bathroom mirror, and, like–I can make out letters on some of them them? Individual letters? But not words. And I know that they’re making words, and I know that it’s my handwriting, but my brain just–it goes somewhere else.
And other ones, that I can read, they have dumb stuff. One of them’s just a doodle of David Hyde Pierce with a caption that just says “HELL YEAH. LOOK AT THE MOON WEDNESDAY.”
It’s, like–in fairness to me, or the person I assume to be me, it’s a fairly good David Hyde Pierce. And there’s–there’s a new moon tonight, so–well.
Whatever.
It’s still twelve oh–oop. Nevermind. Twelve oh two now. Nice.
Benji wants me to take off work until this whole thing’s sorted out. Says he’ll still pay me, but, like–being yelled at by awful dudes about trivia that nobody knows is kind of the only constant in my life right now? So I said no. Obviously. Like. It sucks, but it makes me feel normal. Like the beach out by Angie’s place did, before–
Well. Maybe some recollection would be nice, I guess. Just so, like, Danny and company–like, if we end up showing them. Cuz I’m better at sticking to the facts than, say, Robin or Charlotte. So. Yeah.
So. Uh.
Most folks know that she transferred in after a semester at–well, I’m not allowed to say the name of the school in front of her, anymore, and she’s, like, giving me death-eyes out of the bedroom door. But. A certain Ivy League school. This is relevant–
Okay, maybe not, but it’s a nice set up to our establishing shot, which is, of course, her New Year’s party, nine days ago. At her parents’ place. Or, eight days ago, at her parents’ place, I guess. She told us on New Year’s Eve that she was starting at Lands on the fourth, and I offered her a stay in my dorm, cuz I had a single, and, uh, it sucked? But. Whatever.
So I said, “You know, I have a single.” And she said–wait, lemme find my journal–yes, I do write down conversations, Angie.
Alright. She said, “Oh, really, is it on–Bandcamp, Soundcloud, iTunes, MySpace? I didn’t know you–” And I said, “I meant dorm room, dude, you mentioned–MySpace?”
She said, “I still use it.” I laughed, “Of course you do.”
But, anyway. We agreed to live together, but. It was one AM. Robin Cabell dropped by with her new fiancee, said hi, and–well, like, our babysitter’s getting married, to, like, this gorgeous girl from DC, and the high school kids from the hippie school were there, and Benji was there, cuz he’s everywhere, and–
As folks left–Angie started playing Wonderwall around 3AM, so, uh, a little bit before then–it ended up just being the seven of us. Her parents are out of town–as always. Well, not always. But frequently.
They’re mad about–Blarvardgate.
I–I didn’t say it! I said something mildly close alluding to it. Stop texting me!
But. It was just the seven of us there, Angie still playing some terrible 90s song, and–Benji says, “I brought fireworks. Forgot about that til now.” Elaine, uh, Robin’s new fiancee, asked, “They legal?”
Benji said, “It’s New Year’s Day and I’m a–a bit of a town celebrity,” he said, because his podcast gets, like, seventeen downloads per episode.
“You are?” asked Elaine.
He got really proud, real fast, and he said, “Yes, absolutely, and also, I’m at some rich people’s house and it’s New Year’s Day, so, like. We’ll be fine.”
Which, fair.
And that’s about when things blew up?
Ironically, not literally, cuz he went to his truck, and brought out the fireworks, and he was–well. It was New Year’s, he wasn’t sober, so, he tripped, and those things went flying, landing in the water. It was a bad fall, he hit his head on a rock. And Charlotte was laughing, and she was wading right where the waves were breaking, and she fell backwards, so–AJ panicked, and he jumped in after her, cuz she wasn’t coming up.
And AJ came up, holding Char so she could stand, and she was coughing up water, looked like she was about to pass out. I was checking out Benji’s wound, even though, I’m, like,–blood? Not my thing, ever, at all, it’s–it’s weird and red, and Angie was getting up to check on me, and Rob and her fiancee were trying to help out the kids, and–
And the sky went bright purple.
Not, like, when it’s a sunset, and the sky’s kinda magenta? And that’s blending into the night-sky color, but–
Like, highest saturation on photoshop, highest brightness, makes-you-almost vomit cuz your eyes are burning, that bright purple.
And my skin, it felt like it was burning. I smelled salt, felt a breeze, and I tried to close my eyes, to breathe out, but I couldn’t.
And then there was nothing.
And then I woke up on the beach. I could smell salt, I was totally clear-headed–and Benji’s cut? It was gone.
My watch said it was around 4AM. My phone was dead, but–it was the first, still. The sun was rising, in–in normal sky colors.
And I woke up second. Elaine was already up.
She asked me if I saw it too.
I said I that did.
Neither of us needed to clarify what. But we did. Obviously. Because “it” could be, like, anything, like–could be that new reality show that everyone’s super into where eliminations are decided by arm wrestles–it’s, like–it’s got compelling storylines, I swear.
My phone died, Angie, so if you’re trying to communicate, I can’t help you.
Oh! Time’s passing normally now. That’s nice. That’s good.
The plan was to recount the past week’s events, as well as their psychological effect on us. That’s what we agreed on.
So. Time stopped for a little while today. That was weird. That’s important.
I guess–I’m first, so I should talk about my other big experience too.
I was the fourth of us to see something, after it all? It was the third. After work, I was walkin’ to Ramon’s? And as I passed the custard stand, I saw this woman.
She was shorter than me, uh, long sundress on that was way too summery for this weather, but she didn’t seem cold. I offered her my hoodie, cuz I at least had long sleeves, but she didn’t answer. Dark hair, big sunglasses. I’d wager maybe thirty.
She took off her sunglasses, yeah? And the sky flashed purple–the same purple, the same burning feeling all over me–
And then the same nothingness, same smell of salt, same breeze, but–
I was still standing. And we were in this space, this–this purple nothingness, no ground, no sky, no nothing, that’s a double negative, you get what I mean, and–I was still standing–more floating, which was–not as pleasant as you’d expect? But not unpleasant, either. And this woman, she looked at me,  dead in the eyes, and–
And she said–
(beat, uncomfortable)
What did she say?
(laughs)
It’s–it’s in my head, like. Tip of my tongue. I wrote it down, but it’s–it’s another individual letters making out a word I know but can’t–type situation.
But whatever.
What I’m most concerned about is my going to the beach. About the sticky notes. Like, that’s some sci-fi bullshit. Or some horror bullshit. Either or. Probably both.
Again, Truman Showed. Viable theory, here.
Or it has something to do with the Groundhog Day thing. Maybe.
I think what bothers me about this is how easy I’m accepting all this–that, like, I’m fairly sure all this is real. I know it’s–it’s weird. I know that this is sci-fi-esque, but, like–I never saw myself as a protagonist, or–any kind of tagonist, I guess, in those stories. But this–now, I think that I am.
So. Cool.
But why do I think that’s cool? I’m the–I’m the socially-stilted nerdy girl who either dies second or gets really good at guns, and I’m very afraid of guns.
So, therefore? I’m dying second.
Or, or or or, I’m Lois Lane. Charming and tough young journalist, swept off her feet by a charming stranger. Hopefully not a Superman, though, cuz–he’s not my thing. But. Yeah. I can deal with Lois.
I feel like I should know what happens next. Me or Benji, we gotta, we’re the ones who know genre like the backs of our hands. That’s why we’re friends, but–
This isn’t supposed to happen here. Like, I grew up here, and I’m–I wasn’t planning to stay here forever, obviously, but–This town, VB, it’s–it’s comforting in its boringness. Sure, it’s not– the people here are always cycling in-and-out, cuz tourism and school, and all that, but–Violet Beach is a normal-ass town. We don’t have ghost stories, we don’t have cryptids, we–we don’t have lore, or whatever. I don’t think there’s ever been a murder here, for God’s sake.
Okay, well–the hippie school’s headmaster, uh, the rebrander guy, Andrew Corielli, or–his son’s the mayor, right?–Shot that grocer, like, in the sixties. But everyone was a serial killer back then, if I can trust every true crime show ever.
But–my point is. What’s going on is not what happens in this town. What’s going on is what goes on in, like, Roswell, or–or Twin Peaks, or something.
I’m–I don’t have much else to say. That’s a conclusion if there ever was one. So. Uh.
Okay. I’m signing off. Thanks, guys. Hope to see you soon.

Black&Blue
To support the Blue Lives Matter movement is to express to the world around you that you have no idea what Black Lives Matter even means, and to suggest that authority is more important than personal freedoms or happiness.

2017 May: The district attorney of Davidson County decides not to prosecute police officer Joshua Lippert, the officer who shot and killed Daniel Hambrick during a chase, shooting the unarmed man in the back.
2017 June 2: Marc Brandon Davis, an unarmed 34-year-old black man, is shot in Petal, Miss. after a car accident.  When officers arrived an alleged “altercation” broke out between Davis, who was just in a car accident, and one of the officers who remains unnamed. The family of the deceased soon sued the city claiming excessive force, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment and battery and assault in the death of 34-year-old Marc Brandon Davis.  Petal Mayor, Hal Marx, refutes the lawsuit saying he's confident the officer "did nothing wrong."
2017 June 8: David Jones, an unarmed 30-year-old black man, is shocked with a stun gun and shot in Philadelphia, Pa. after fleeing a traffic stop.  Jones purposefully ditched his legally owned weapon and was shot in the back nearly 25-feet from where the gun dropped.  Jones was in a populated area as the officer fired in the direction of traffic.
2017 June 29: Aaron Bailey, an unarmed 45-year-old black man, is shot in his vehicle in Indianapolis, Ind. during a routine traffic stop.  Driving on a suspended license, Bailey fled the scene and crashed his car.  The officer fired his weapon 11 times, 4 bullets striking Bailey in the back of the head.
2017 July 6: Dejuan Guillory, an unarmed 27-year-old black man, is shot in Mamou, La. when an Evangeline Parish sheriff's deputy started a physical confrontation with both Guillory and his girlfriend.  The deputy first shot Guillory in his back while Guillory was face down, then fired several more times.
2017 July 7: Brian Easley, an unarmed 33-year-old black man and a former lance corporal in the Marine Corps is shot in Marietta, Ga.  Easley was living in a $25-a-night hotel, scraping by on a small monthly disability check from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  After returning from his 2005 tours of Kuwait and Iraq he found himself honorably discharged and returning home suffering from both physically ailments and mental illness.  In the summer of 2017 his usual disability check from the VA had mysteriously failed to materialize, and rent was due. If he couldn’t cover it, he’d be on the street, and the thought terrified him. On July 7 at around 9:30 a.m, the Marine veteran entered the Wells Fargo branch and claimed that the backpack slung over his shoulder contained C-4 explosive. He allowed several employees and customers to exit and then began making calls, dialing 911 to let the authorities know what was happening, and a local news station, WSB-TV, to explain his predicament. “They took everything,” he told the assignment editor who picked up the phone. “With my last little bit of money I got I’ve been able to hold up at a hotel, but I’m going to be out on the street and I’m going to have nothing. I’m not going to have any money for food or anything. I’m just going to be homeless, and I’m going to starve.” He continued to speak to the editor on the phone, “I already told them if I detonate this bomb, I’ll let them go first,” he promised. “These ladies are very nice, and they’ve been very helpful and supportive.”  He allowed the editor to speak with the hostages. One described her captor as “very respectful.”  Around 12:15 p.m. a single shot rang out, adding Easley’s name to the list of 236 mentally ill people killed by police in 2017.  As the hostages were whisked to safety, a robot entered the bank and retrieved Easley’s backpack, placing it in a “total containment vessel.” It was eventually deemed harmless, and inside investigators found a Bible, some papers, and other incidentals.  On his body they found a wallet and a broken cross pendant.
2017 July 19: Farhad Jabbari, an unarmed 38-year-old man, is shot in Saginaw, Mich. after he is pulled over for drunk driving.  Dash cam footage shows a clear picture of the encounter. “You just blew a 0.61, legal limit is .08, you are double the legal limit,” the officer tells Jabbari.  Jabbari is placed in handcuffs and placed in the back of the police cruiser.  “So I'm going to jail now?” Jabbari asks. “Yep, we will do the test right there,” the officer replies.  “I'm not going to jail,” Jabbari says.  Seconds later, Jabbari is able to slip out of one handcuff.  “What are you doing, uh uh, keep them on,” the officer says.  “I'm committing suicide,” Jabbari responds.  The officer opens the back seat of the car and is pulled in by Jabbari.  The officer fires five gunshots, killing Jabbari.
2017 September 27: At the College of William & Mary, students associated with Black Lives Matter protested an ACLU event because the ACLU had fought for the right of Unite the Right rally to be held in Charlottesville, Virginia.  William & Mary's president Taylor Reveley responded with a statement defending the college's commitment to open debate.
2017 October 19: Dewboy Lister, an unarmed 55-year-old black man, is shot in Corpus Christi, Tex. Lister spent the last years of his life mentoring the youth in his community.  He helped young men in Corpus Christi get jobs, he instilled in them respect for others and encouraged them to help after Hurricane Harvey struck the area.  He was shot in the torso during a traffic stop.  About him, Listers friends said, "He was a great man. He’s always a phone call away when families are in need.  He helped a lot of men around my age [21] land jobs at the local docks and ports.  He would constantly tell us to obey but know our rights. He was all about family and helping.”
2017 November 13: Calvin Toney, an unarmed 24-year-old black man, is shot in an apartment building in Baton Rouge, La. during a routine DCF meeting with an officer escort.  The footage was never released and Toney’s family was never given closure.  Toney was pronounced dead after a bullet wound to the chest, but paramedics found Toney’s body in handcuffs.  The official statement is that Toney was handcuffed after being shot, but without the body cam footage there is no corroborating evidence to this statement.  The family has been left without answers as to why their son was murdered.
2017 November 18: Lawrence Hawkins, an unarmed 56-year-old black man, is shot in Prichard, Ala.  Lakeisha Williams witnessed the event and stated a Prichard officer followed Hawkins closely all the way to his driveway without the patrol lights turned on.  Williams said, "It was ridiculous how he did that. He didn't turn on no lights until after that man was shot over there (the driveway)." Williams said Hawkins ran a stop light but didn't deserve to get shot.  She said, "He just got out of his truck and reaching out to get his cell phone." Williams continued, "The police was saying something and then all I heard was pow, pow, pow."
2017 December 1: Keita O'Neil, an unarmed 42-year-old black man, is shot on a street in San Francisco, Calif. by an officer on his fourth day on the job.  Body camera footage shows the officer drawing his pistol from the passenger seat while the cruiser is still moving. The video then shows him opening the side door and firing a single shot through the window as O’Neil, who was unarmed, runs by in the opposite direction.  O’Neil was later pronounced dead at San Francisco General Hospital.
2017 December 6: Jean Pedro Pierre, an unarmed 42-year-old black man, with a history of medical problems, including mental illness, is shot in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.  Pierre’s family states the cops’ video footage misrepresents the man, who was a father of five, an entrepreneur and former political candidate in Haiti.  “They didn’t have to kill him at all,” said Ralph Fenelon, Pierre’s son.  “They had tasers, they had other weapons. They didn’t have to shoot him.”
2018: Police kill 1,165 people
History of Blue Lives Matter:
2014: The FBI reports 51 law enforcement officers were 'feloniously' killed in the line of duty.
2014 December: The homicides of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in Brooklyn, New York kickstart a counter movement to Black Lives Matter, which the authorities believe to be “anti-police”.
2015: National statistics Report 42 police officers were shot and killed.
2016: National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reports 64 officers were killed in firearm-related incidents.
2016 July 7: A BLM protest was held in Dallas, Texas that was organized to protest the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. At the end of the peaceful protest, Micah Xavier Johnson opened fire in an ambush, killing five police officers and wounding seven others and two civilians. The gunman was then killed by a robot-delivered bomb. Before he died, according to police, Johnson said that "he was upset about Black Lives Matter", and that "he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers."
2017: National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reports 44 officers killed in fire-arm related incidents.
2018: National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reports 52 officers killed in fire-arm related incidents.
Homicide Comparisons:
According to the FBI, which publishes the data in the Uniform Crime Reports, from 1980–2014, an average of 64 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed per year.
Updated estimates from the Bureau of Justice Statistics released in 2015 estimate the number of killings by police officers to be around 930 per year, or 1,240 if assuming that non-reporting local agencies kill people at the same rate as reporting agencies.
The numbers show why support for Blue Lives Matter is a disingenuous cause. Especially as most of those in favor of Blue Lives Matter are police officers themselves showing support for their “boys in blue.”  A police officer who is in support of Blue Lives Matter, and flaunts the Blues Lives Matter flag and merchandise, overall dismisses the deaths of the very citizens they’ve vowed to protect.
The initial response of centrists to the statement “Black Lives Matter” was “All Lives Matter”.  However, this is how disenfranchisement works.  Similar tactics are used against feminism, stating that feminists are anti-men.  As bell hooks stated in her collection of essays Feminism is for Everyone, “Conservative mass media constantly represented feminist women as man-haters. And when there was an anti-male faction or sentiment in the movement, they highlighted it as a way of discrediting feminism. Embedded in the portrayal of feminists as man-hating was the assumption that all feminists were lesbians. Appealing to homophobia, mass media intensified anti-feminist sentiment among men.”  We see this tactic being used today by groups like Blue Lives Matter to hijack a movement and portray it as chaotic and violent.
Black Lives Matter was never about the prospect that one life is more important than another.  Rather, it aims to highlight the most affected and yet least represented group of people.  The movement portrays the sentiment that no one is free while others are oppressed.  Or as Audre Lorde said, “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”

TRANSCRIPT: 1x01 - Twelve Oh One
Hey, folks! Bee here. Y’all reached out to me about transcripts awhile back, and, hey, since the season’s over, I’m gonna start posting them! As a person with attention issues, I super get the need for transcripts, and I’m sorry for not delivering on them sooner.
I’m also reediting episodes right now, so. Those corrections will be posted about as they happen. Anyway. Here we go. Episode one, which you can listen to here, if you so please.
TERESA:
Okay, so--it’s recording. Cool .
Um. It’s Wednesday. It’s been nine days since--eight days, maybe? --well, if you’re listening, at this point, you know what it was--Benji says we’re gonna publish this, but, like, no. That’s--that’s ridiculous. This is for science.
Or our memoirs. Whatever.
We’ve--the seven of us have decided to keep a log. Of what’s been going on.
Um. So. Cool. Name and deets, just in case some more weird memory shit goes down--My name’s Teresa. I’m eighteen. I’m an Aries, I like bowling and shitty pop music, and only mostly ironically. That enough fluff? I’m a freshman at, ah, Lands College, here in town, and. Studying journalism, with a minor in women’s studies, uh--anything else--I feel like this would be a better story if I start showing, rather than telling.
Or, like. Telling stories rather than just reading out my dating profile. Because that’s lame.
My dating profile’s actually--it’s a lot more detailed than that. I’m on, like, seven different sites, and every profile is. Very Different.
(text notification sound)
[lean away from mic]
Anj, stop--stop listening in! You--you--dude, take a nap.
[and we’re back]
So. Anyway. Here’s what we know.
[long beat]
That was good, right? A good joke? That’s something. Um. Cuz we don’t know very much at all. There’s something there, I swear, like, I rehearsed that bit in the bathroom mirror this morning, and I was thinking, no, I won’t pull that, but--
But. Back to the point.
Y’know how, in movies, people are always like, “Nobody knows except for us?”
That’s so exclusive. So presumptuous. We don’t know if people are lying. We haven’t spoken to every person on the planet--we haven’t even spoken to anyone outside of Maryland. Outside of town. Like. We’ve watched news, but God knows, some of those conspiracies about hypnosis through CNN are real, or whatever. Y’know? Like--those conspiracies are almost exclusively believed in by, like, flat-earthing racists, so, like, they’re probably, definitely super wrong, but--I was making a joke and I’m overthinking it now. Cool.
Anyway. We don’t know who knows. Maybe someone in, like, Caracas, knows? Maybe someone in--you get my point--knows.
Or maybe we’re being Truman Showed. Wouldn’t be the worst theory to have come out of this.
I would--well, I’d hate it, but one time, back in middle school, the public library did these--these movie nights for teenagers, right? And, so, uh, a bunch of us were there, and I was sitting with Angie, cuz she was--she was the only person I knew there, of course, and she was sitting with these kids, like--uh, from the hippie school she had taken in, and--one of them was AJ, I know, and one was Charlotte. but the others, I don’t see anymore.
But anyway, she was, like, starry-eyed at the idea of her life being a TV show without her knowing. At the idea of unintentional stardoms. So maybe she’ll get a kick out of that theory.
Here’s something: I was working on my campaign notes earlier, cuz the group’s meeting tomorrow, should meet tomorrow  and I didn’t really--I didn’t like a few of the potentials, so, whatever. Irrelevant.
I checked the time, and--well.
I went back to the beach last night to see if I could recreate what happened alone, and, uh--at least. I think I did. I don’t remember going, but, uh, Angie says I did, and AJ said that when he was closing at work, he saw me walking towards it. But I didn’t--I didn’t go.
There are sixty-nine--which, yeah, nice, that’s the sex number, whatever--sticky notes on the bathroom mirror, and, like--I can make out letters on some of them them? Individual letters? But not words. And I know that they’re making words, and I know that it’s my handwriting, but my brain just--it goes somewhere else.
And other ones, that I can read, they have dumb stuff. One of them’s just a doodle of David Hyde Pierce with a caption that just says “HELL YEAH. LOOK AT THE MOON WEDNESDAY.”
It’s, like--in fairness to me, or the person I assume to be me, it’s a fairly good David Hyde Pierce. And there’s--there’s a new moon tonight, so--well.
Whatever.
It’s still twelve oh--oop. Nevermind. Twelve oh two now. Nice.
Benji wants me to take off work until this whole thing’s sorted out. Says he’ll still pay me, but, like--being yelled at by awful dudes about trivia that nobody knows is kind of the only constant in my life right now? So I said no. Obviously. Like. It sucks, but it makes me feel normal. Like the beach out by Angie’s place did, before--
Well. Maybe some recollection would be nice, I guess. Just so, like, Danny and company--like, if we end up showing them. Cuz I’m better at sticking to the facts than, say, Robin or Charlotte. So. Yeah.
So. Uh.
Most folks know that she transferred in after a semester at--well, I’m not allowed to say the name of the school in front of her, anymore, and she’s, like, giving me death-eyes out of the bedroom door. But. A certain Ivy League school. This is relevant--
Okay, maybe not, but it’s a nice set up to our establishing shot, which is, of course, her New Year’s party, nine days ago. At her parents’ place. Or, eight days ago, at her parents’ place, I guess. She told us on New Year’s Eve that she was starting at Lands on the fourth, and I offered her a stay in my dorm, cuz I had a single, and, uh, it sucked? But. Whatever.
So I said, “You know, I have a single.” And she said--wait, lemme find my journal--yes, I do write down conversations, Angie.
Alright. She said, “Oh, really, is it on--Bandcamp, Soundcloud, iTunes, MySpace? I didn’t know you--” And I said, “I meant dorm room, dude, you mentioned--MySpace?”
She said, “I still use it.” I laughed, “Of course you do.”
But, anyway. We agreed to live together, but. It was one AM. Robin Cabell dropped by with her new fiancee, said hi, and--well, like, our babysitter’s getting married, to, like, this gorgeous girl from DC, and the high school kids from the hippie school were there, and Benji was there, cuz he’s everywhere, and--
As folks left--Angie started playing Wonderwall around 3AM, so, uh, a little bit before then--it ended up just being the seven of us. Her parents are out of town--as always. Well, not always. But frequently.
They’re mad about--Blarvardgate.
I--I didn’t say it! I said something mildly close alluding to it. Stop texting me!
But. It was just the seven of us there, Angie still playing some terrible 90s song, and--Benji says, “I brought fireworks. Forgot about that til now.” Elaine, uh, Robin’s new fiancee, asked, “They legal?”
Benji said, “It’s New Year’s Day and I’m a--a bit of a town celebrity,” he said, because his podcast gets, like, seventeen downloads per episode.
“You are?” asked Elaine.
He got really proud, real fast, and he said, “Yes, absolutely, and also, I’m at some rich people’s house and it’s New Year’s Day, so, like. We’ll be fine.”
Which, fair.
And that’s about when things blew up?
Ironically, not literally, cuz he went to his truck, and brought out the fireworks, and he was--well. It was New Year’s, he wasn’t sober, so, he tripped, and those things went flying, landing in the water. It was a bad fall, he hit his head on a rock. And Charlotte was laughing, and she was wading right where the waves were breaking, and she fell backwards, so--AJ panicked, and he jumped in after her, cuz she wasn’t coming up.
And AJ came up, holding Char so she could stand, and she was coughing up water, looked like she was about to pass out. I was checking out Benji’s wound, even though, I’m, like,--blood? Not my thing, ever, at all, it’s--it’s weird and red, and Angie was getting up to check on me, and Rob and her fiancee were trying to help out the kids, and--
And the sky went bright purple.
Not, like, when it’s a sunset, and the sky’s kinda magenta? And that’s blending into the night-sky color, but--
Like, highest saturation on photoshop, highest brightness, makes-you-almost vomit cuz your eyes are burning, that bright purple.
And my skin, it felt like it was burning. I smelled salt, felt a breeze, and I tried to close my eyes, to breathe out, but I couldn’t.
And then there was nothing.
And then I woke up on the beach. I could smell salt, I was totally clear-headed--and Benji’s cut? It was gone.
My watch said it was around 4AM. My phone was dead, but--it was the first, still. The sun was rising, in--in normal sky colors.
And I woke up second. Elaine was already up.
She asked me if I saw it too.
I said I that did.
Neither of us needed to clarify what. But we did. Obviously. Because “it” could be, like, anything, like--could be that new reality show that everyone’s super into where eliminations are decided by arm wrestles--it’s, like--it’s got compelling storylines, I swear.
I guess--I’m first, so I should talk about my other big experience too.
And the sky flashed purple--the same purple, the same burning feeling all over me--
And then the same nothingness, same smell of salt, same breeze, but--
I was still standing. And we were in this space, this--this purple nothingness, no ground, no sky, no nothing, that’s a double negative, you get what I mean, and--I was still standing--more floating, which was--not as pleasant as you’d expect? But not unpleasant, either. And this woman, she looked at me,  dead in the eyes, and--
And she said--
[beat, uncomfortable]
What did she say?
[laughs]
It’s--it’s in my head, like. Tip of my tongue. I wrote it down, but it’s--it’s another individual letters making out a word I know but can’t--type situation.
Maybe.
I think what bothers me about this is how easy I’m accepting all this--that, like, I’m fairly sure all this is real. I know it’s--it’s weird. I know that this is sci-fi-esque, but, like--I never saw myself as a protagonist, or--any kind of tagonist, I guess, in those stories. But this--now, I think that I am.
So. Cool.
But why do I think that’s cool? I’m the--I’m the socially-stilted nerdy girl who either dies second or gets really good at guns, and I’m very afraid of guns.
So, therefore? I’m dying second.
Or, or or or, I’m Lois Lane. Charming and tough young journalist, swept off her feet by a charming stranger. Hopefully not a Superman, though, cuz--he’s not my thing. But. Yeah. I can deal with Lois.
I feel like I should know what happens next. Me or Benji, we gotta, we’re the ones who know genre like the backs of our hands. That’s why we’re friends, but--
This isn’t supposed to happen here. Like, I grew up here, and I’m--I wasn’t planning to stay here forever, obviously, but--This town, VB, it’s--it’s comforting in its boringness. Sure, it’s not-- the people here are always cycling in-and-out, cuz tourism and school, and all that, but--Violet Beach is a normal-ass town. We don’t have ghost stories, we don’t have cryptids, we--we don’t have lore, or whatever. I don’t think there’s ever been a murder here, for God’s sake.
Okay, well--the hippie school’s headmaster, uh, the rebrander guy, Andrew Corielli, or--his son’s the mayor, right?--Shot that grocer, like, in the sixties. But everyone was a serial killer back then, if I can trust every true crime show ever.
But--my point is. What’s going on is not what happens in this town. What’s going on is what goes on in, like, Roswell, or--or Twin Peaks, or something.
I’m--I don’t have much else to say. That’s a conclusion if there ever was one. So. Uh.
Okay. I’m signing off. Thanks, guys. Hope to see you soon.

Accountants Behaving Badly: Busted with Meth, Stealing From Clients, Bank Fraud
A look at the best of the worst accountant malfeasance around the globe over the past week or so.
British accountant, 47, faces the death penalty in the Philippines ‘after being caught with meth in a drugs raid’ [Daily Mail] Philip Joseph was in a flat with two locals when police burst through the door in Manila at around 5 p.m. on May 13.
Philip Joseph
Officers said they found Joseph, 47, with a woman, Josephine Olayao, 38, and Rodolfo del Rosario, 42, a tuk tuk rider, preparing sachets of methamphetamine. Joseph faces charges of possession and dealing, which carries a maximum punishment of the death sentence or a life sentence.
If found guilty of possession, Joseph faces a minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum life term.
Joseph had moved to the Philippines and was working in the financial sector as an accountant and legal collections manager.
U.S. Secret Service: Jacksonville accountant stole $12 million from clients before he died [Florida Times-Union] A complaint filed by the federal government last week alleged that Raymond Lee Hutchins, CPA, had two methods of stealing money from three prominent clients.
For the first method, he overpaid the income taxes for one client, and when the government would send back the money, he deposited it into accounts he had opened in his client’s name, the complaint said. From 2010 to 2015, he stole about $6.4 million this way, the complaint said.
For the second method, he stole more directly from two clients, laundering the money through a series of accounts, according to the complaint. For the first client in this second method, he stole $2.6 million after her death, the complaint said. Two weeks before the client’s death, he set up a bank account in her name and then funneled some of the money through that account on the day of her death, the complaint said.
For the last client, he stole $2.9 million from January 2011 until April 2016, the complaint said, by laundering funds from three trusts through various accounts.
Hutchins, 58, and his wife died in an apparent boating accident in Camden County, GA, in 2016. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said alcohol, inexperience, and bad weather contributed to their deaths.
Accountant indicted in bank fraud case [The Herald-Dispatch] Kimberly Price, an accountant in Huntington, WV, has been federally indicted more than two years after she was accused of embezzling more than $1 million from a client’s account.
Kimberly Price
Price, 59, was indicted in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia on 28 counts of bank fraud allegedly committed during her time as a staff accountant at the Huntington-based firm Hess, Stewart and Campbell PLLC.
Price was originally arrested in January 2016 and charged with more than 900 counts of embezzlement, forgery, and uttering in Cabell County after the executor in charge of the trust for Elizabeth Caldwell, a Huntington woman who died in the fall of 2015, went to the West Virginia State Police after noticing the account was lower than expected.
According to a criminal complaint, Price “paid off (a) vehicle, went on trips, helped her son start a business, paid off her (son’s) student loans, supported her boyfriend and supported her gambling habit.”
Accountant for ‘ugly models’ agency fleeced firm out of more than £21,000, court hears [Evening Standard] Charlotte Harris, an accountant for Ugly Enterprises Ltd., which manages the Ugly Models agency, stole more than £21,000 by forging her boss’s signature in a bid to clear her debts.
Harris, 31, took money meant to be paid to models by writing checks to herself and siphoning off funds into her mother’s bank account.
An audit revealed 16 bank transfers from Ugly Enterprises into Harris’s account made using a card reader she was not authorized to use.
Judge Jeffrey Pegden QC told her she had left Ugly Models with a “tarnished reputation” thanks to the fraud, which totaled £21,071. He ordered that she repay the money in £200 monthly installments.
Harris admitted to two counts of fraud by abuse of position. She was also sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years.
East Brunswick CPA sentenced to prison for filing false tax return [Bridgewater Courier News] Amit Govil, a CPA in New Brunswick, NJ, who operated a business in East Brunswick, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for underreporting his income on his personal tax return, avoiding paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes.
Amit Govil
Govil, 58, who operated P&G Associates, which provides internal audit and risk management services to community banks, admitted that for the tax year 2010, he underreported and failed to report the gross receipts or sales of P&G Associates on Schedule C of his personal tax return, avoiding more than $672,000 in taxes.
In addition to the prison term, Govil was sentenced to one year of supervised release.
Police: Des Moines accountant stole more than $200,000 from Open Bible Churches over a decade [Des Moines Register] Michelene Diane Kinning wrote unauthorized checks to herself while an accountant at Open Bible Churches’ denominational headquarters beginning in 2010 and lasting through 2018, authorities said.
She faces three charges of first-degree theft—each requiring at least $10,000 in alleged theft—and one charge of second-degree theft, which involves thefts valued between $1,000 and $9,999.
Kinning, 54, is accused of writing herself more than $170,000 in unauthorized checks between 2010 and 2016, and writing additional checks adding up to more than $20,000 over the following two years.
