Revamping Radio News for the Smartphone Generation 

CHICAGO - Radio broadcaster Charlie Meyerson of Rivet Radio paid a visit to Columbia College's Mobile Journalism class on April 3, 2014.

Students got a chance to network with Meyerson, an award-winning journalist who frequently contributes to WXRT, WBBM-FM, and Crain's Chicago Business. 

Meyerson is also a reporter for Rivet Radio, a Chicago-based company that is reinventing the way we get our mobile news.

"Smart phones are powerful, versatile tools. It has even helped topple governments in the Middle East," Meyerson said.

Meyerson introduced the class to the Rivet Radio app. Rivet News Radio, created in 2013, is an iPhone application that delivers personalized and geo-located news. 

During the Rivet Radio presentation, Meyerson explained how this app is revolutionizing the radio world. With just a click of a button, the user can select which news story they want to hear on-demand. 

The class also learned some tricks of the trade by implementing mobile journalism techniques, including reporting live broadcasts using Ustream. 

During Meyerson's lecture, students live tweeted using the hashtag: #cccmobilej . 

Meyerson pointed to the hashtag and said, "You guys are already thinking ahead."
