"Don't Wait For An Opportunity, Create Your Own"
By: Ash Nicole
Entrepreneurship in journalism is beneficial to a journalist. In this field of business, when waiting on an opportunity, journalists have the potential to wait much longer than they would have ever expected. Instead of pondering on an opportunity, journalists should create their own.
Many Chicagoland journalists are creating their own news outlets not only because it is easier, but because jobs are not available. When you are creating you're own content, and posting whenever you'd like, life is good.
A few self starting companies such as Swagger Are Us, Rivet Radio and Breaking Voices are located here in Chicago and are currently in the process of building their traffic to a greater level.
Journalists make great entrepreneurs for three reasons including...
Enterprise- The very practice of journalism requires knowledge of a space other than just writing and reporting. As journalists, you have the right to ask any question you desire.
Contacts- Journalists interview people daily. If a good relationship is developed with the interviewees, then you will have a better chance at being able to contact them again for another story or possible lead.
Hustle- Journalism is about hustling and making sure deadlines are made. Being able to hustle through tough stories of difficult tasks given to you in journalism will serve you well.
Terrell Johnson, the Editor-In-Chief of Swagger Are Us, created his branding website as an online street wear magazine. He explores the connection between style patterns relating to Hip-Hop and R&B.
He is a fashion expert who created a website relatable to not only journalism but fashion as well. Terrell also has developed a great work relationship from and among his readers and sources.
Rivet Radio and Breaking Voices are both applications that were created to make life easier for Chicagoans. Rivet Radio allows users the opportunity to customize their own radio experience. Breaking Voices has the ability to keep the community involved, allowing them to break news stories by sending them live stream. Both applications have the skill needed to become a successful entrepreneur.
Swagger Are Us, Rivet Radio and Breaking Voices are all self starting companies with many things in store for their users in the future.

Revamping Radio News for the Smartphone Generation
CHICAGO - Radio broadcaster Charlie Meyerson of Rivet Radio paid a visit to Columbia College's Mobile Journalism class on April 3, 2014.
Students got a chance to network with Meyerson, an award-winning journalist who frequently contributes to WXRT, WBBM-FM, and Crain's Chicago Business.
Meyerson is also a reporter for Rivet Radio, a Chicago-based company that is reinventing the way we get our mobile news.
"Smart phones are powerful, versatile tools. It has even helped topple governments in the Middle East," Meyerson said.
Meyerson introduced the class to the Rivet Radio app. Rivet News Radio, created in 2013, is an iPhone application that delivers personalized and geo-located news.
During the Rivet Radio presentation, Meyerson explained how this app is revolutionizing the radio world. With just a click of a button, the user can select which news story they want to hear on-demand.
The class also learned some tricks of the trade by implementing mobile journalism techniques, including reporting live broadcasts using Ustream.
During Meyerson's lecture, students live tweeted using the hashtag: #cccmobilej .
Meyerson pointed to the hashtag and said, "You guys are already thinking ahead."

Rivet Radio and the New World: Charlie Meyerson
By: Ash Nicole
"Smart phones are more powerful than people in this world," said the founder of Rivet Radio, Charlie Meyerson.
Meyerson stopped by Columbia College Chicago Thursday to speak with students about his new application Rivet Radio.
For those unfamiliar with Meyerson's new app, Rivet News Radio, is an Internet radio news application and platform delivering personalized local, national and world news.
The students of Barbara Iverson's mobile journalism class were excited to network with Charlie Meyerson. They politely accepted business cards and pens in hopes of connecting with the founder of Rivet Radio in the future.
During the Rivet Radio presentation, Meyerson demonstrated how he records his soundtracks with his smart phone. Students were eager to learn more about the new app and how it can help further their journalism careers.
Rivet Radio's purpose is to allow users the opportunity to create their own radio experience from national to international news. This generation is revolved around technology so Rivet Radio made it easier for students to access the news and plans to continue updating them with their product.
