transformers Bumblebee: not a review, mostly just flailing
(mild spoilers)
So from all the nonsense I've reblogged today, you might have noticed that I saw the Bumblebee transformers movie last night. I knew from the very first trailer (where I almost cried and then yelled about how in the fuck was I emotionally invested in a transformers movie in the year of our lord 2k18) that I was going to see this movie regardless of if it was good. a girl and her robot best friend? it had to happen whether I wanted it to or not. quality wasn't in the equation.
And I'm here to tell you that it's hands down the best transformers movie. I've only seen the first movie (multiple times) and the 2nd movie (once. probably. I have no memory of it but I must have), but even without seeing the rest I can tell you that it's the best transformers movie. I'm distinctly unobjective, but being as objective as I can it's probably a 7/10 quality movie, and a 10/10 in my heart.
I mean it. It's legitimately good. Very funny and full actual substance and emotion. It narrows the action compared to the michael bay movies. The consequences may be global, but the actual fight scenes themselves are between a small number of individuals so you can actually follow what's happening. There's a helping of cheesiness, but it's earnest and infrequent, and still had me smiling even at it's most ridiculous (if you've seen it, you know what part I'm talking about). Haliee Steinfeld can fucking act and seems to carry the film on her shoulders easily, even though her most emotional scenes must have been performed alone, since you know, her co-star was CGI. The connection between the two of them was absolutely the heart of this movie and was everything I ever wanted. I definitely cried.
Surprisingly, there's a human love interest that doesn't suck. I was only here for Charlie and Bee, but Memo (the love interest in question) was a delight. It probably helped that the movie ended with simply potential between the two of them. No dramatic makeouts or even formally getting together. Memo definitely deserves more attention than what I've seen here on tumblr. He's earnest and kind and goes along with the weirdness with aplomb.
As for Charlie and Bee, this movie is not a sexy human-nonhuman relationship like the shape of water, nor is it a romcom like venom. This is very obviously a Horse Girl Movie. You know the ones. And those typically don't involve a romantic relationship between the girl and the horse (since you know uhhh non-sentience), but for you robotfuckers out there (and I mean this very lovingly, the same way we’ve embraced the word monsterfucker around here lately), you really don't have to try very hard.
Tumblr media
dramatic! underwater! facetouching!!! That's a thing that happened people. And like, constant non-underwater facetouching and teaching him about earth and making sure other humans don't call him an 'it' and protecting each other and communicating through the ~power of music~ and gahhhhh my heart. C'mon folks, I ship it. There's just a level of intimacy there that really works for me.
Side note: shout-out to the 30something guy next to me who was also at the theater by himself. We ended up chatting a little bit at the end (and I don't do talking to strangers, but for some reason that always seems to change at the movies), and he was so enthusiastic about how this is what transformers movies should have been all along. And hearing that from a dude who probably grew up with transformers about a character-driven movie where the lead was a teen girl? very refreshing. (see Hollywood? dudes can connect with female protagonists. get on that)
Bottom line: do you like robots? do you like to feel those feels about robot-human relationships (platonic or otherwise)? do you like action scenes that are watchable and free of michael bay(tm) lens flare? go, do it. embrace the emotion and the cheesiness and live your best life

moondance (charliebee)
Word Count: 1,332 Pairing: Charliebee Rating: G Warnings: None Summary: @stormyseas77 requested: What did they do in those missing hours between them saving the world and their goodbye scene? Like, it had to have been 12+ hours…
( READ ON AO3 )
When you were just a kid, you never noticed that gradual transition from falling asleep, lulled by your companionably quiet father at the wheel while your mother read, stared outside, or provided input for directions under the glow of a small flashlight. You didn’t have to drive, have to do anything except occasionally look outside or watch the steady rise and fall of your brother’s chest as he completely passed out from that night’s karate practice.
But even then, it showed in little ways: demands to do more chores or pull your own weight around. Do everything necessary to be less of a burdensome child and more of a blossoming adult.
Charlie’s eyes cracked open, feeling her cheek pressed tacky and warm to the side window of the Volkswagon Bug and the healthy thrum of Bee’s engine as they chugged along an abandoned country road, the brunette’s eyes squeezing shut once before blinking away the heavy dregs of sleep. “Bee? What time is it?” she inquired softly, drowsily. Though, part of her didn’t want to ask. Falling asleep in the bug was like falling asleep in someone’s arms.
However, when she just realized it, she peered over the dash to the sight of the waves crashing upon the shore and cool sea breeze, the bleary show of creamy gold on the horizon suppressed by heavy violet clouds tinged with gold, despite how beautiful it was entirely.
“I WANTED to s p e n d time with you,” Bee’s voice crackled in myriad tones and genders as they pulled to a slow stop. “A d a t e.”
Charlie sat blankly in the cabin of the car at that, feeling her cheeks gradually heat up like suffused flame. “You do?” she forced herself to say coherently, a restless heat stirring in her gut. Swallowing thickly, she brushed an errant strand of hair behind her ear. “…I’d like that, Bee.”
It was a soft admittance, but when there was a mechanical whirring and clangorous collision of parts as Bee reformed himself, she couldn’t help the giddy feeling that bubbled into her heart when she found herself sprawling on the hood of Bee’s chest, uttering a breathy laugh. “A date, huh? Anything you have in mind?”
Truth be told, after her father’s death, she hadn’t allowed herself to open up to anyone. Even though she’d had these stupid, fleeting fantasies of hooking up with Tripp Summers, in hindsight she was glad nothing ever came of it. Here and now, how could one measly crush ever compete with this? She felt like she was diving off that crane again, fighting through the locke and the currents generated from destroying Shatter in that decisive blow, fighting her way until seeing him suddenly made the world fall into slow, serene focus.
As if the chaos of the past several hours had never happened. Seeing those blue oculars of his flare back to life had stirred something in her. Something sweet and protective.
Bee made an inquisitive chirp when he noticed Charlie fall silent, notably concerned. The young woman suddenly pulled herself up higher where she craned to gaze at Bumblebee with a distant look in her eyes, her mind all static and warmth. Bumblebee, too, locked eyes with her while small, tender hands took him by the sides of his face and Charlie angled her head enough to plant an inexorable kiss on the grille where a mouth would be, something overwhelming her more than even waves upon the shoreline.
It wasn’t until the glow of his eyes behind thin eyelids did she realize how Bee’s hand was drifting near her waist, impossibly gentle as not to crush her with his prodigious strength. When that realization finally sank in, Charlie’s eyes widened in mortification and she jumped from his body like she’d been stung.
“Oh God, what the hell did I just…?” she demanded of herself before hearing Bumblebee scramble to his feet, concern evident as he gingerly hovered near her. “Bee, I’m so sorry—”
“Was it SOMETHING I did?” the autoboot queried cautiously, a feeling of guilt beginning to swim its way into the girl’s chest.
…Why had she done it? Did she really crave closeness that badly she sought it from an autoboot of all things? Silently, she admonished the thought. Bumblebee wasn’t just something. He was a person. He was…
What did that make him to her? What was making her heart thunder in her chest, and what made her kiss him like that?
“I’m not angry, Bee. Not at you,” Charlie sighed as she plopped onto the sand, wind ruffling through her hair. “It’s just—we’ve been through a lot, right? And…we grew close. But, I seriously overstepped some boundaries just now, and…” Her cheeks heated too much for her to continue, unable to look at the autobot square in the face, gaze averting even when Bumblebee sat down with her.
“Don’t people do that when they love each other?”
That reasoning hit her in the heart like a sledgehammer.
“Well—!” Charlie sputtered when she leapt to her feet, rising and pacing away but not before Bee emulated her and followed her path. “To be completely fair, there’s different kinds of love! There’s familial, platonic, friendly—a whole chart, actually. You know, Ron has a whole chart on it? There’s storge, agape, um, eros—” Distractedly did she pace, cheeks flaming and unable to think straight. Rambling, anything to derail the topic.
“Family doesn’t kiss like that. Neither do friends,” Bumblebee clarified pointedly, cutting through her argument like it was the thinnest rice paper you could imagine. “I’m not blind to human customs, Charlie.”
Charlie groaned dramatically and threw her hands up. “Okay, I give up! Just—” The moment’s humor seemed to fizzle away, a genuine insecurity flitting over Charlie’s features as she folded her arms and gazed imploringly at Bee. “Bee, I can’t just…admit to that like it’s nothing.” Come to think of it, she’d never kissed anyone like that in all her eighteen years. No casual, dumb middle school crushes, even. This… She knew what had compelled her. She just didn’t want to say it.
Tepidly did she feel a finger poke her shoulder, hard and steel and familiar. Turning around, with a broken expression did she turn back to see Bumblebee open his arms wide for her, throwing her arms around his neck and not even thinking twice about embracing him like this. Three people she’d ever hugged felt like home: her dad, her mom, and now Bee. Even though he was steel and his heat was dry and sometimes acrid and mechanical, it felt like home to her. Another home.
“I love you, Charlie.”
That shouldn’t have made her break down the way she did. After her father’s death, dealing with life after him, someone else coming in while her family seemed to perfectly move on—to meeting Bumblebee and everything they’d gone through together, it came as a catharsis she never thought would come. All in the form of this embrace and something she thought she wouldn’t feel so passionately again.
“I love you, too, Bee.”
They rested their foreheads together, Charlie sniffing back what she could but leaving her tears to be dried by the wind. She did. Despite it all, she did. She loved Bumblebee. She didn’t want a life without him.
Suddenly, the soft strings of Clair de Lune filtered through Bee’s radio and a small smile alighted on her lips. Slowly and reluctantly did she withdraw from the hug, wiping away the last of her eyes and clearing her throat, some new and tender understanding between them. Offering out her hand, she smiled adoringly at him.
“Come on. You’re not leaving earth without learning how to dance. Um…even if ballroom really isn’t my thing, but—come on, we’ll give it a shot.”
“I’ll try not to step on your toes.”
‘You’d better not!” Charlie exclaimed with a laugh.

“I need to pee so bad.” Kiara pouted at Charlie before bursting out into a laugh. She smiled as she looked at the young woman. Charlie looked stunning in her dress. “You look amazing Charlie, absolutely stunning.”

What if Charlie and Bee went on a roadtrip together?? No worries for a good few days, just the two of them and (maybe) a map as Charlie shows Bee some of the most beautiful places in the USA. (Also, I love your blog and the fact you ship Charbee!!)
Sorry for the wait, friend, but I hope you like this! (And don’t mind the Charliebee family inclusion heh)
Warning(s): G, none
“Ithink I’m gonna ask him, Red. To be Conjunx Enderae with me.”
Forthe last several hours, it’d been just her and Stingray on the openroad. There wasn’t anything unusual about it, because it meant hedidn’t require a holoform driver to give the appearance ofnormalcy. And…he was her son. They were family. Of course theycould keep themselves together while Bee went on his mission, promising to meet them in the Motel 56 they were staying at in SilverSprings, Arizona—right on the cusp of the Grand Canyon she sworeshe could see glimpses of in the right amount of sunlight.
Thatnight, late at midnight, she and Stingray sat restively in a copse oftrees in a pinewood forest skirting the borders of the small town. What seemed to be more buildings clustered in a dense forest split bya single, main road was enough for them to be able to slip awayunseen. Through the nexus of needled branches could Charlie seespinning nebulae and a sky spangled in an endless tapestry of stars. With the air dry but pleasantly warm, it was a nice night for them tobe out.
“ConjunxEndurae? You mean, like married?” the young transformer broached,Charlie perched on his plated scarlet calf.
Charliefelt a hot flush creep up her neck, barely able to avoid Stingray’sinnocuous, curious blue optics. “I— I mean, when you put it likethat, as a person, it—yeah,” she deflated in a brief concession, knowing it was better to tell her son outright.
Herson. And here she thought she’d never settle down as fast assome of her classmates were out the gate already. But here she was,on a summer road trip with what was her son in the eyes ofCybertronian culture, no labor pains necessary. A being that haddoubly attributed the creation to via Bumblebee.
That’dbe something to say at a high school reunion. How she was married toan alien robot from Cybertron.
“Hey,mom?”
Thatgot Charlie’s attention, mustering a smile for his sake. “Yeah?”
“Doyou love dad?”
Thattook Charlie off guard. That’s right—Stingray hadn’t been therewhen Bumblebee and she had that heart-to-heart, spilling their gutsand bolts all over each other, which…sounded gross to imagine, butit wasn’t entirely off the mark.
“Ido,” Charlie said plainly, affection lacing her voice.
Stingraycouldn’t help but light up at that. Large arms gently encircled herand she laughed giddily, leaning into the gentle show of their bond, that soft thing that fluttered like a bird in her chest.
“Dibson being best man,” Stingray quipped with what sounded like asmile, Charlie giggling into the embrace.
“Gotcha. But only if you wear the goofiest, dorkiest and biggest bow tie wecan find.”
“Aw,but mooooooooooom!”
Atthat, she couldn’t help but burst into a fit of giggling.
*
“Ithought he’d be here by now.”
Seatedin the driver’s seat outside of a mom and pop bar, Charliecontemplatively chewed the breakfast sandwich she’d ordered, sipping some of the soda. Though she didn’t want to voice it, heranxieties were largely mirrored. “He’ll be here. Maybe the doofusjust took a wrong turn,” Charlie said hopefully, even though shefelt a twist of worry in her gut. With everything that had happened, the threat of Decepticons was a perpetual concern none of them couldshake.
Stingraystill vibrated with apprehension, turning the radio dial on his ownwhile Charlie indulged him and listened, having wanted to do the sameexact thing.
“Anexplosion was heard at the Southern Rim just minutes ago, parkrangers looking into the possibility of an avalanche caused by lastweek’s torrential downpour—“
“Anexplosion?” Charlie repeated aloud, feeling her blood curdle icilyin her very veins.
“Dad,”Stingray whimpered through the radio, Charlie moving on autopilot. Ithad to be Bee—what else could explain him being so late without atleast radioing in or something?
“Canyou hone in on him, Red? We’ve gotta find him!”
Stingray’stransponder buzzed and crackled hurriedly as he attempted to do justthat before it stopped, the young Autobot declaring, “Found dad!”Without another word did Stingray speed away from the parking lothe’d occupied, soaring down the turnpike and towards the GrandCanyon.
Thescenery blurred unremarkably past as the pair sped towards thenational park, forest soon giving way to open vistas and flat veldtpocked by tough grasses and cacti, thankful that it was still morningand that the crush of tourists scrambling to get into the parks werelargely clear. Because even if they weren’t, Charlie knew they’dmove heaven and hell to get to Bee and make sure he was safe.
Itwasn’t long before they came to one of the touristy vantage points, giving them an ample and spectacular view of of the canyon Charliewould’ve wanted to linger and relish in, but knew that theycouldn’t.
Withouteven a moment’s hesitation did Stingray transform into his Autobotform, heedless of who might see. And the moment that he did did thetwo of them hear a cacophonous explosion that rocked with thedissonance of mortar fire, feeling it through to her bones. Fromafar, Charlie followed the sound and watched as Bumblebee was waginga war of wills in the river valley, the Colorado River shallow enoughthat it came only to his waist in the summer drought. There, anameless Decepticon twice his height grappled for dominance withdestructive power, Charlie blanching at the sight of it.
“Mom,there are people coming up on it fast! We have to help them!”Stingray cried out anxiously and pointing at a large raft careeningperilously close to the stage of action. Just around the bend, therewouldn’t be more than a few seconds for them to act.
“Right.Come on, let’s go!”
Withoutanother word did Stingray squat so Charlie could piggyback on hisback, careful to avoid the splintering parts before he sprinted offthe very cliff and Charlie felt the distinct sensation of her stomachdropping in the fall. Catching himself on a buttress, the Autobotskidded the rest of the descent down while grappling for purchase,Charlie certain she’d be pelted in clay-toned dust before theyreached the bottom.
Oncebarely feet from the valley floor, Stingray leaped one last time intothe river, a little taller than Bumblebee. The people in the raftstartled at the transformer that halted their advance, a gentle stopthat didn’t upset anyone but made them cognizant of the battleahead, some swearing oaths at the sight of it.
WithStingray’s help did Charlie climb aboard the raft, digging for alead line for him to take and temporarily moor to some branch orother overhanging the river. “Red, catch!” Charlie prompted onceshe did, the Autobot dexterously tethering it. “Uh, hey, um—staycalm, everyone! We’ve just got a little, um,” the brunetteglanced over her shoulder at Bumblebee and the Decepticon exchangingblows, “…situation. Yeah! It’ll be alright in a second,so—maybe…get comfy, yeah.” God, she wasn’t cut out to be atour guide, was she?
Feelingthe raft lurch forth a bit, Charlie turned to see why when Stingrayleaped into the fray, several plates of facial armor covering itwhile his firearm deployed, watching with a swell of pride asBumblebee became aware of his son’s backup, grappling theDecepticon and wheeling it around so Stingray could get a clear shot.In a long moment of anticipation did Stingray steady his firing armand optics narrow, then taking the shot in a thunderous echo thatshook Charlie down to her very bones. The Decepticon’s head wasblasted clean off, the crackle of fizzling electronics sounded whilstthe body locked up and dropped dead into the water, the volume of itswelling when the deceased passed under the raft and Charlie couldswear she shuddered as it did.
Wordlesslydid Bumblebee embrace his son, the firearm disengaging and Stingrayembraced the elder Autobot back. People aboard the raft couldn’thelp but croon at the sight of it, Charlie feeling herself tear up abit. Though, she started a bit when Bumblebee waded through the waterfor her, offering a hand while Stingray chattered once he extricatedhimself from the embrace.
“Welp, things look safe now,” he prattled while undoing the tether andpassing the rope on to the raft’s occupants, who appeared largelymollified now that the threat was gone, “so you fine folks go abouton your way, alrighty? Have a good one!” With that, the reclaimedtheir oars and paddled anew to resume their jaunty trip down theriver.
Politelydid Stingray avert his eyes while Bumblebee picked Charlie up, browstouching as Charlie embraced and cradled Bee’s head close. “Youwere awesome out there, Bee,” Charlie murmured fondly as shepressed a tender kiss to his brow, Bumblebee glowing at theaffection.
“Youweren’t half-bad either,” Bee conceded, laughing softly atStingray turning their back to him. He really was just a kid. “I’msorry I couldn’t make it today. These Decepticons came out ofnowhere and Optimus and I had to take care of them before anyone gothurt.”
“Shhh, hey, it’s okay. You were doing the right thing, Bee. How can Ifault you on that?”
“Youwere so cool out there, dad!” Stingray interjected, gushingfrankly. “Like, the way you were just clobbering that guy! And whenI got to blow his head off—it was so cool!” Charlie couldn’thelp but laugh softly at that.
“See?Red thinks so, too.” Stingray came into the fold while Bee spared afree arm to loop over his son’s shoulders, the young Autobotchirping happily.
“I’mjust glad you guys are alright. And we make a pretty good team, huh?”Bee said with a smile in his voice, bumping temples with Stingray whocould only fluster in protest—like any kid would.
“Whydon’t we hit the road again? I bet we could find some cool placesall to ourselves here,” Charlie hinted with a note ofmischievousness, the other two seeming in perfect agreement despitethe slight ache in her chest.
Whilethey made their way up the cliff side, she couldn’t help butwonder: when would be a good time to ask? And, was she really in herright to? Getting married was always a huge thing and part of herworried she hadn’t known Bee long enough, that she’d just bethere to weigh him down. And she was only eighteen, too. Was she evenready for that kind of commitment? Letting these doubts sink into herlike stones, she bit her tongue on the ascension up and praisedwhatever was out there for neither Stingray nor Bee noticing.
Maybesome other time.
