Charlie stared down at his phone, his leg bouncing as he sat at the kitchen counter and considered what he was about to do. He already had Sabrina's number pulled up; he'd saved him simply as Bri, left the contact favorited so he'd still see his messages when he turned on the Do Not Disturb settings to avoid work calls at night. It'd only been a couple of days since the night they'd reunited, but he was near desperate to see him again.
Maybe it was the loneliness. The empty house, the empty garage, the fact that he still hadn't gone back to class and was halfway convinced he should just go ahead and drop out. It certainly had something to do with the fact that he'd already missed years of his life that could've been better spent by Sabrina's side. And maybe because he'd known him all his life, or maybe because they'd met again outside the funeral home, but he was thinking more about limited time, and he didn't want to waste any more of it without him.
He could, he knew, just ask him to hang out again. That would be the easiest thing to do. But he also couldn't forget kissing him, and he wanted to know if Sabrina thought about it, too. It was selfish and stupid and he couldn't help it. His face already warm and his heart stuttering, he pressed the button to call.
"Hey!" He started, maybe a little too quickly when Sabrina answered. Charlie stared down at the countertop and scratched idly at a stain with his free hand, trying to conjure up the words he'd prepared for this. "I, uh.. I- I was wonderin' if you might wanna... go out? With me? Sometime this week, if you're free.."

Chérif Kouachi's self-destructive impulses were already evident in one of the documents discovered on his computer by the French police in 2010, entitled ‘Operation Sacrifice’, which outlined a terrorist attack very like the one the brothers would carry out five years later. It included this paragraph: ‘A mujahideen forces his way into the enemy's base or else a zone where there is a group and fires at point-blank range without having prepared an escape plan. The goal is to kill as many of the enemy as possible. The author will very likely die himself.’ [My italics]
The striking thing about this document is that Chérif - and most likely Said as well, given the symbiotic nature of their relationship - was already contemplating a suicide mission. The twin urges to kill and be killed existed long before the brothers heard that Charlie Hebdo had published cartoons lampooning the Prophet, suggesting that the contents of the newspaper merely provided a pretext to act on a rage that had needed an outlet for years. It also confirms that their amateurish flight from the newspaper office, when they gave away their location the following day by holding up a petrol station in a hijacked car, was no accident; they hadn't got an escape plan because they neither expected nor wanted to survive.
The bonds of family life, which might have acted as a restraint on other men, were not strong enough to deter them from a course of action that would end in their own deaths - as well as inflicting incalculable damage on their families. Saïd's wife Soumya was unable to work after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, leaving her financially dependent on him, and the couple had a three-year-old son. A year after the massacre, Soumya would issue a statement through her lawyer, expressing the immense bitterness she felt towards her husband for abandoning her and their son. But Saïd's experience of being a father didn't soften his behaviour towards Corinne Rey, a female cartoonist he encountered at the entrance to the Charlie Hebdo office, where she had arrived late for the editorial meeting after picking up her daughter from day care. Saïd and Chérif greeted her by her pen name, 'Coco', and threatened to shoot her and her child if she didn't key in the code they needed to get through the steel security door into the building.
Early that morning, Saïd had kissed Soumya goodbye at their flat in Reims, telling her he was going to visit Chérif in north-west Paris. He knew perfectly well that the next time she heard about her husband and brother-in-law it would be in connection with the country's worst terrorist attack in decades, yet there was nothing in his demeanour to suggest anything out of the ordinary. In a telling detail, survivors of the Charlie Hebdo massacre remembered that it was Saïd, always the quieter and more introverted of the two brothers, who did most of the killing.
When they shouted about avenging the Prophet, they were really talking about themselves, seeking vengeance for the anger and hurt they had been accumulating for decades. The argument that this type of terrifyingly destructive male rage is infantile in origin - that the psychological damage comes first and enables the ideology - is at the heart of this book.

Bienvenue !
A VENIR

Alright listen, I'm never gonna get anywhere with these guys MOSTLY because I've never come up with an actual plot that I like, but uhh a scene where Lana and Charlie dance together in his shop has been living rent-free in my head for literal years, so here's that :)
(and just for reference, Lalania is pronounced "La-lane-yuh." It's my mom's name and I know all too well that it easily gets read wrong.) Anyway!
-----
Charlie hummed softly as he worked, leaning over the engine of a client's twenty-year-old van and getting grease up to his elbows. The radio across the room was just loud enough to chase off the silence; turned up any higher and the shitty signal was a little too obvious, the fuzziness a little too irritating. He knew he should get something new one of these days, but that probably wouldn't be until that radio just stopped functioning entirely. He was fine with that. That radio was familiar, and he liked familiar things.
He didn't take notice when Lana walked through the door. She used the back entrance, moving directly into the garage instead of through the office where a bell would have signalled her arrival. It wasn't until she'd stepped around the car and into his peripheral that he looked up, bumping his head into the van's hood as he straightened.
"You'd think you'd be used to that," Lana teased. She was dressed like she'd just come from a job, wearing a long coat that obscured the well-tailored tuxedo jacket and black slacks underneath, and her curly hair was pulled back out of her face. It was cheesy, as far as a magician's costume went, but Charlie always thought that it suited her. He rubbed at his temple, smearing grease, and grimaced.
"You'd think," he responded. Then he dropped his hand and offered a small smile. "What brings you here?"
She shrugged and crossed her arms in thought. "Finished a job, went looking for someone to share a drink with, and he.. wasn't home," she said, feinting confusion. "And I thought, surely he isn't working at.. what is it, nine o'clock? Ten? But it seems I was wrong."
Charlie snorted. "A rare thing for Lana Reyes."
"A rare thing indeed." She hummed thoughtfully, then dropped her act to give him a more level look, setting a hand on her hip. "So why was I wrong, Charlie? It's a bit late to be.. here."
"Oh. Uh.." He glanced away, down at the engine he'd been working on and shrugged with one shoulder. "Just, uh, doin' my job," he answerd. He stepped back to the van, only giving her a brief look before he leaned over it again. "..Guess I can't go drinkin' with you tonight."
She watched him for a moment, silent. He could feel her eyes on him and tried to ignore it- she could go out by herself. It was too crowded for him on nights like this, anyway. And, in another rare occurrence, he didn't exactly want to drink. After the past week, he wanted a clear mind. For just a little while. After a few seconds had passed, Lana walked by him, and he wondered if she was just going to leave.
For the best, he thought.
Then the music got louder.
He stood up, nearly banging his head again to see her standing by the radio and turning up the dial. She glanced back at him and smiled. "What? It's a good song. And if we're going to be hanging out here, I want music."
He furrowed his brows in confusion, then shook his head. "Lana, look, I don't-"
She hummed over him, then started to sing softly, leaving him faltering as he tried to think of a way to convince her to go. Her voice wasn't perfect, untrained and wandering out of pitch, but he liked it anyway. Singing was something she did often, he'd learned, whether it be a song stuck in her head or an absentminded narration while she did laundry. Something she didn't do often was offer him her hand. He blinked, looking up at her.
"Lana-"
"What, never slow-danced before?"
"At- at fuckin' high school prom, maybe, but that's not-"
"Come on, then." She grabbed his hand before he continued protesting and pulled him a few steps away from the van, letting him stutter while she placed her other hand on his shoulder.
"Lana, I'm covered in grease."
"Whatever. Dance with me, Reimes." She gave him a pretty, sweet smile, and he sighed. Why not? He did like the song..
Placing a hand against her waist, they fell into an easy sway. And after a moment passed, he let some of the tension ease out of his shoulders and gave her a loose smile, which she returned as a bright, triumphant grin.
He had to admit, this was.. comfortable. Better than being alone. The static in the music didn't bother him as much for the moment, and Lana's hand was warm in his own, and when he squeezed, she squeezed back. It'd been a rough week- a rough year, or two, or three, really- and somehow the one true constant in his life was a woman who slipped in and out of it on a whim. Somehow his best friend was the person he'd drunkenly puked on in the back of a taxi on the same night they'd met. Somehow, she kept coming around to visit. He watched her for a moment, her brown eyes searching his, and sighed softly. "When're you leavin' town?"
"Tomorrow," she answered. She looked up at him with a slight shrug. "I've got no more jobs here and I need to get to Asheville."
"North Carolina?" He asked. "That's a hell of a drive."
"A friend of mine has a gig at a renaissance festival, needs a partner for the show. It'll be steady work for a couple of months.." she paused as she gave a spin, laughing softly when she was looking up at him again. "You know, you're not half bad. I bet that guy giving you doe eyes the other night would be impressed."
"What-" Oh. Green eyes and a coy flirt came to mind, from a man they'd crossed paths with in a bar. He flushed and frowned. That guy. "You know that I don't-"
"Don't pretend you weren't into it." She cut him off with a smile. "He probably goes there regularly. You could.."
"No," he said firmly, frown deepening. "He seemed like a nice guy, but I'm.. I'm fine." He wasn't, and he knew that she knew that, but he wasn't going to pull someone else into it. Pretty eyes or not. "So," he said, looking for a subject change. "Tomorrow?"
"Around ten, I think."
He hummed. The last notes of the song were beginning to fade out, and after a moment of hesitation, he pulled her into a hug. It was only a second before her arms were around him in return, squeezing tight. "Stay safe out there, alright?" He asked softly. She hummed and pressed against his shoulder.
"Always do. ...You better call me, this time. At least once or twice. If I don't have someone to complain to, I'll go insane."
He laughed, pulling back just enough to look at her. "I'll try."
"Promise me, Reimes." She rested her hands on his shoulders. Grease that had been on him had smeared onto her coat, and there was a little on her cheek, but she didn't seem to mind. "And you offer to buy that guy a coffee. Promise me."
"Lana.."
"Promise!" She said, wearing a teasing grin. "You never know, he might be as fucked up as you are," she said, and he couldn't help but laugh again, shaking his head.
"Maybe," he replied, though he knew he wouldn't. She stepped back, satisfied.
"Alright. I'll call before I go. See you around, Charles."
"Not if I see you first, Lalania."
She rolled her eyes, but smiled. Then she was gone, and Charlie turned back to the van with a sigh. There was no guessing when she'd be back in town, as she never kept a steady schedule, but he found himself hoping that it wouldn't be too far off. Even if she would be scolding him for the lack of coffees offered to potential romantic partners. After another ten minutes of struggling to get anything done, he wiped off his hands, shut off the radio, and locked up for the night. Might as well go home, he thought, before he convinced himself to do something reckless.

Ok question,,,, where would Charlie be if they never intervened
// oooH okay if THAT’s what you wanna ask me,
I think.. for a long time, he’d be following the same old pattern. He’d go to work, go home or maybe to a bar, and drink until he couldn’t remember the rest of the night. His social life would be little more than what interaction he gets at work and.. maybe a few one night stands. And.. eventually, it’d probably kill him.
What Charlie needs from the beginning is really just someone who’ll stick by him for five minutes and realize that, hey, he’s a good guy, and he’s more than capable of pulling himself together if someone can just give him a reason to. Vee and Raakx both are people who tell him early on and straight to his face, in some way, that he’s got a life worth living and that they believe he could get better. Before that, yeah, Drew and his dad or Rachel had helped him through a rough patch or two, but the problem is that they didn’t stay around. They gave him a little push, then left him on his own. And even if it wasn’t, to Charlie, that felt a lot like abandonment. It felt like a loss of faith. It felt like they maybe thought he wasn’t worth the trouble.
I don’t think he’d outright kill himself, despite the fact that he does experience a lot of suicidal thoughts. At his core.. Charlie really, really wants to live. He wants a reason to keep going. He’s got a very deep love for being alive, he appreciates life as just... something wonderful. It’s why he’s so fond of camping and the like; getting to just admire what this world is capable of when no one’s looking is something absolutely magical to him. But he gets to this point where he feels like maybe he doesn’t deserve to appreciate it, and he knows it’ll all go on without him- his own life holds little worth compared to the rest of everything.
Eventually, it would just be his recklessness and his lack of self-care that killed him. He’d drink and wreck his car, or he’d... have some accident in his own home. It’d take a couple days for someone to notice, that way; Rachel’s used to him skipping out on work when things get bad and there’s no one else who really sees him that consistently. And the really tragic thing is, to the rest of his family, his death wouldn’t hit as hard as it would now within the verses where he’s met Vee or Raakx or simply mended his ties with them. For Trent and Drew and everyone else, he’s already been out of their lives for quite some time. He’s already been distant and little more than a shell of his former self. They’d already mourned him and felt his loss, in some way.

He only thought of Buster after he'd started the engine. Charlie's hand had already fallen away from the ignition, and a deep, heavy sort of guilt settled on top of his chest. That poor dog had always deserved a better home than the one he gave him. He'd been too distant for too often, and he'd always sort of known that he should've found him somewhere else to go. Left alone like he would be for a few days now, he'd probably try to chew through the doors. Hell, there was a chance he'd succeed, as stubborn as he was.
Leaning back against the driver's seat, Charlie frowned to himself, then lifted a hand to scrub a stray tear away from his cheek. It wasn't as if he'd exactly planned on this. There wasn't anyone who'd think to go checking on his dog until someone found him, or until his mother happened to stop by the house again. He hadn't left anyone any notes to tell them that he was planning on disappearing. It'd been sort of an accident, really. He'd closed up early, after he'd spent two hours staring at the engine of a toyota and failing to make sense of something that was usually so familiar. Then he'd gotten into the driver's seat to drive the damn thing out into the parking lot only to remember he'd already closed the garage doors and shut off all the lights. And then he'd wondered if this wasn't what he'd wanted, anyway.
His mother would probably just take Buster to the shelter. Which wasn't horrible, but he deserved better prospects than that. Vi would give him a good chance. It was just that Vi never wanted to hear from him again and Charlie would respect that.
He tilted his head against the headrest and took in a soft breath, tasting nothing and wondering idly how long this would take. He knew it wasn't instant, but he knew it wasn't too slow, either. Not when done this way.
Buster was gonna be waiting on him. Chewing down on his lip, Charlie suppressed a shaky sound and reached out to find his phone where he'd dropped it on the passenger seat. He couldn't talk directly to Vi, but he could find someone close enough. He just had to hope he'd be receptive, after he'd gotten Vi hurt and left him behind those weeks ago.
[To: Nick] hey, you dont owe me any favors but I kind of need one
[To: Nick] would you mind checking in on the dog for me? spare key is under the rug. Id appreciate it
[To: Nick] thanks in advance
The phone was turned off and set to the side. There was every chance Nick wouldn't go, but he sort of hoped he would. Better for him to find Buster than his mom.
Charlie rested back against the seat and let his eyes fall shut. He'd thought of writing to Vi, but that would just break his heart, and he couldn't do that to him. The best he could do, he thought, was go quietly. And maybe it'd just feel like falling asleep.

FORREAL THOUGH
Charlie's soulmate/codependent partner is a man with a Cluster B personality disorder-- Which Charlie takes in *stride* despite his own conflicting psychotic symptoms.
And THEN Sabrina is highly autistic and abrasive and aloof and mostly stuck in his own head, but Charlie is so patient, enough that he becomes his best friend.
Charlie's biggest tragedy is that he's unaware of how kind and good-hearted he is

There's something sooo about stories wherein the mystery intentionally remains a mystery because it's the Everything Else around it that's important
#laura palmer's death#(originally intended to remain unsolved)#ode to billie joe#its the reason i tend to leave Jay's fate unknown where the Reimes brothers are concerned?? its certainly implied he's probably dead#maybe because i did write at one point that be was#but idk i think i should lean more into the idea that he couldve run away. considering the turmoil the family was going through at the#time....#BUT his fate is kind of unknown because its not.. important to the story im focused on#whats important is that charlie doesnt know and it haunts him deeply
