When Charlie sat beside him, Vee picked the cat up to cradle her like a baby, her long legs stretching out in content and her pink tongue slipping past her teeth to hang out just a little. He scratched at her gently and nodded. He wasn't exactly hungry either, but he wanted that time with him to spend.
The weight on his thigh got him to look again, letting one of his hands drop to run through Charlie's hair. "I don't blame you.." he said, "You were very brave today letting her in." Vee hummed softly, tucking a fallen lock behind the man's ear so he could see his face better. "I'm sorry I cut it short on you. I.. didn't think the call would upset me as much as it did." he told him, "I.. couldn't continue to entertain her."
"We have a big day today." // Consider,,, Mel
Charlie let out a quiet breath. They sure as hell did. Turning to look at Vee from where he sat on his side of the bed, he offered a small, nervous smile. He’d already finished getting dressed for the day, and for the first time since he’d gotten home, he’d woken up without a noticeable ache, but none of that meant he was ready to face this.
It’d been… going on three and half years, now, since he’d talked to his mom. Since Jay had gone missing, at least. The fact that she’d reached out at all was shocking, but Charlie was even more surprised with himself. He hadn’t expected to want to see her. But after a few near-death experiences, a marriage, and everything else he’d been through.. he figured it was about time.
“She said she’ll be here around noon,” he answered, reaching up to rub at the back of his neck. He frowned to himself. “So we’ve got… about an hour? …I- I guess, if there’s anythin’ you need to ask, now’s the time.”

Charlie... starting to sleep on the couch more and more often? It's not every night, but it's often enough. He keeps claiming that he fell asleep reading or watching TV but he's really just scared that his nightmares will wake Vee/he'll wake up from a nightmare and mistake Vee for someone else and try to hurt him
GOD okay,, Charlie waiting until Vee's asleep to slip away from him and settle down on the couch. Vee wakes up either in the middle of the night on cold sheets rather than the back or chest he'd been pressed against?
The more it happens ths more he starts to feel he's done something wrong?

Vee tried not to look disappointed by that answer, but he did his best to keep his faith. Charlie had been getting better with talking to him, so hopefully.. he would just come around in a little while. He nodded for him before looking away and chewing the inside of his cheek; after a minute, he moved to the couch where he'd been before and sat back down, pulling his cat back onto his lap to pet her.
"I.. could still make us lunch." he said, "I wasn't lying to your mother, but it would be nice if it was just you and me. But.. I won't be too upset if you need some alone time, my love. I understand."

Vee's brows knit together. Was Charlie not feeling well either? After that news, he wanted to hold him against his chest like they had this morning and squeeze.. but he supposed if he wasn't in the mood, he wouldn't force him. It was so rare that he didn't let him touch, so he would take it seriously if he really didn't want it right now. "That's funny.." he said softly, folding his hands in front of him to have something to hold onto. "All I ever do is worry about you.. You're my husband."
Offering him a bittersweet smile and a tilt of his chin, he took in a quiet breath. Perhaps they both needed a little while to come to terms with all of this? Even so, that didn't stop him from wanting to take his hands again. "..Are you sure you're alright?" he asked him, his thumb tracing along a flower on the back of his other hand. "I'm here if you need me, Charlie."

When Charlie turned to face him, he nearly leaned forward, ready for him to touch his cheek or hold his face. But it didn't come-- He didn't fault him for it; this was bad news. Taking in a breath, he lifted his own hands and played with his husbands curls, his eyes moving over him. "I'm fine." he told him, "...Upset because you deserve so much better and worried to the point I've started to ache a bit, but I'm alright."
Vee leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss between his brows. "..They may be done, but they can't go without punishment." he said, his voice quiet but briefly dark. "I want to see them rot for what they did to you.."

Walking out to Charlie, he brushed his fingers along his forearm before wrapping his arms around his waist from behind. He rested his chin on his shoulder and let his eyes shut as he held him, squeezing him softly. "Not as much of a bloodbath as I thought it would be.." he whispered and traced his hands along his sides, "But.. I have some bad news."
Vee grew quiet like he was unsure of he really wanted to speak. He chewed the inside of his cheek and swallowed, burying his face in his neck for minute. "Your case isn't... dropped, but they're putting it on the back burner and that's usually.." Sighing, he held him closer. "..a death sentence." he said, "Everything came up empty. They don't have anything else to go off of. I'm... sorry, love."
Clenching his jaw, he pressed his nose against his cheek. "I know Nero will keep looking, but.." he frowned, "You deserve so much better.."

"Oh! Wonderful." he said and let out a soft sigh of relief, his smile spreading. "It was nice to meet you too, finally. We'll call you soon and have you back over. I don't feel like we got a proper chance to get to know each other this time." And after over thinking everything she did since the moment she walked in, he felt guilty and hoped he didn't come off as rude.
Vee sat aside his can and offered out his hand for her, his smile gently dimpling his cheek. "Thank you for coming to see us."

After a few moments of cradling his cat, Vee set her down and eased himself up. He hadn't been this sore earlier, had he? With a tired twitch of his jaw, he grabbed his cane from the nearby end table and walked towards their bedroom to join his husband once more. He dipped back into the room and put on a soft smile as he moved over to him, leaning over to gently kiss his temple, his free hand slipping into Charlie's.
"Buster looks comfy." he said and gave a quiet laugh, his gaze lingering on the sleeping dog. As much as he was willing to keep his spirits up for now, he wanted nothing more but to tug back Charlie into bed and hold him for a while. He felt tired and sick again-- His husband would have to go knowing he'd gotten hurt and it was going without punishment again. Vee squeezed the hand he held, swallowing down his guilt and leaned against him.
"How... long are you going to be in town, Melanie? I was planning on making us all lunch, but it seems my back had it's own ideas for the day and I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it." he said, "I would still love to, of course. But would it be awful of me if I suggested another time?"

You know I loved you more and more, But I am scared of what I’ve done and I am scared of what’s to come But I know I’ve done nothing wrong– since the night we met Because you kept me alive and gave me reasons to survive And I’ll take you away from here by any means I can
But I’m not gonna lie to you,  Lately I’ve been thinking of giving up Using the gifts that I’ve surely squandered on something less reliant on luck And I haven’t slept properly since 2006 But I’ve had some of the most glorious moments of happiness

"Hey." Vee answered his phone and sat down in the living room, scooping up the cat beside him into his lap.
"You sound happy." Nero replied, but his tone wasn't exactly chipper either.
With a soft breath Vee explained to him that Charlie's mother had come over for a visit and then in hushed words, expressed his worries about her. She wasn't exactly snooping more than he felt like a fish in an aquarium with her around. It was like she was observing the two of them. And the teasing he got for it helped his mood. Credo had always been the same way-- He was overprotective and inquisitive and watched Nero like a hawk even now despite he and Kyrie being together for so long. Maybe he was overreacting? He wasn't sure, but he doubted she was out to purposely cause Charlie trouble.
Playing with the cross hanging from his ear, he felt his stomach sink back low as he listened to Nero talk about the case. Every. Single. Lead. Each tip and clue had lead to one place; the mafia, but went no further than that. They were at a block and now it was official, Charlie's case was being put on hold. Vee held the cat closer to his chest and frowned. "...There isn't anything else we can do?"
"Not unless someone nudges us in the right direction. We've gone through everything, Vee." Nero's voice was soft and apologetic, "I'm keeping the file on me and I'll keep poking around, but the department is done unless we get something else. I'm sorry."
Letting out a shakey sigh, Vee scrubbed his face and pressed his nose into Shadow's soft fur, taking comfort in the way she purred at the attention. "..Alright." he said quietly, "Thank you, Nero." After their goodbyes were said, he set his phone aside and pulled his legs up onto the couch. Charlie would survive one more minute, right?
