House of Worth | ‘Infanta Margarita after Velazquez’ Fancy Dress | c.1897⠀⠀ ——⠀⠀ Worth designed this fancy dress costume “Infanta Margarita after Velazquez” for Ms. Kate Brice. She wore it to the Bradley-Martin Ball in 1897. She ordered it by telegram last minute after deciding to attend the ball. The house of Worth made it in 24 hours, with out any sacrifice to quality, so that it could be shipped in time. ⠀ ⠀ ➡️Swipe to see Ms. Brice in the gown after a night of dancing and the inspiration painting by Velasquez.⠀ ⠀ (@ Reference Number 42.146.8A-B)⠀ ——⠀⠀ #13daysofhalloween #fashion #style #design #glamour #vintagefashion #art #vintage #historicfashion #costume #couture #halloweencostume #fancydress #halloween #velazquez #infantamargarita #victorianfashion #victorian #houseofworth #charlesfrederickworth https://www.instagram.com/p/B3zb-HNgG_m/?igshid=1ng74palb14ha

House of Worth | c. 1900 ・・・ A superb example of dressmaking from the House of Worth, this dress exhibits the aesthetic of the last years of the nineteenth century. The fashionable reverse S-curve silhouette of the dress and the dramatic scroll pattern of the textile reflect the influence of the Art Nouveau movement. The striking graphic juxtaposition of the black velvet on an ivory satin ground creates the illusion of ironwork, with curving tendrils emphasizing the fashionable shape of the garment. In order to achieve this effect, the textile was woven à la disposition, with the intent that each piece would become a specific part of the dress. With this technique, the design of the fabric is intrinsic to the design of the dress. ・・・ #houseofworth #charlesfrederickworth #victorian #fashion #artnouveau #beautiful #blackandwhite #vintage @metcostumeinstitute https://www.instagram.com/defunctfashion/p/BwK4JnUAuUu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14ejirodlq29g

Halloween treat! The Peacock Dress made for Princess de Sagan by Charles Frederick Worth, a dress with a story. She hosted a costume ball at Hôtel de Sagan called Bal des Bêtes, the Ball of the Beasts, June 1885 in Paris. Guests were supposed to wear animal costumes. This picture is from the Daguerre auction webpage. This dress made quite the impact, an article I found written in The Domestic Monthly fashion magazine vol.23 states "as for the splendor of the Princess herself as a peacock, it is not possible to convey it in the least by mere description. She was almost too dazzling to be looked at steadily. Over a skirt of peacock green shading to Blue was Venetian lace completely covered with diamonds, pearls, emeralds and rubies, following and defining the pattern of the lace. But the glitter of these Jewels was entirely surpassed by a splendid peacock's tail out spread over the shoulders and back of the waist, and covered with hundreds of the same stones, with the addition of topaz: and against this background the high-dressed hair of the wearer, on which was a peacock's crest entirely in diamonds, stood out in full-relief. The effect was unsurpassed and unsurpassable, and is and long will be the talk of all Paris". Not only was Paris a buzz after seeing the hostess in this gown, news made it across the ocean too. I found an article written in the Atlanta [Georgia] Constitution newspaper in June of 1885 which also described the ball and the peacock dress. I am currently reading, A Century of Fashion by Jean Phillip Worth published in 1928. In the fancy dress chapter Jean Phillip says "we made innumerable costumes for this ball, by the way, many of which I have forgotten". I wish we could see more of the outfits worn to this ball. The descriptions in the book took me down the rabbit hole that is the internet.

FYI: #1858: English couturier, Charles Frederick Worth established the first haute couture house in Paris, championing exclusive luxury fashion for the upper-class woman and coining the term 'fashion designer' - an artist in lieu of the basic dressmaker. #charlesfrederickworth #houseofworth #worth #hautecouture #couture #paris #ruedelapaix (at Rue de la Paix, Paris)
