XII: The Hanged Man

The gorgeous black and white art of this deck reminds me quite a bit of the art from the Sandman graphic novels. This card features a man hanging from a leafy pole, tied to it by one foot. His other leg is bent at the knee, crossed in front of him, his hands are behind his back. A crow sits on the pole right above him, its wings spread as if it has just landed or is just taking off. The man doesn’t appear to be upset or in pain; he hangs from the pole almost meditatively, as if doing so is helping him reach a place of calm, an altered state.

From the book: (edited) Vulnerability, stillness, a new point of view, initiation, powerlessness. Your body hangs in the void. Bide your time; let your bonds become your anchor.

I can see the relation between the book’s explanation and my interpretation. The man in the image has light above him and darkness below – the void the book mentions. He is tied – anchored – securely to the pole, and while his situation could be called worrying, he remains calm, waiting for things to change when the time is right.
