One thing that I keep seeing whenever I make posts that are critical of macs is folks in the notes going "they make great computers for the money if you just buy used/refurbs - everyone knows not to buy new" and A) no they don't know that, most people go looking for a new computer unless they have already exhausted the new options in their budget and B) no they don't make great computers for the money, and being used doesn't do anything to make them easier to work on or repair or upgrade.
Here's a breakdown of the anti-consumer, anti-repair features recently introduced in macbooks. If you don't want to watch the video, here's how it's summed up:
In the end the Macbook Pro is a laptop with a soldered-on SSD and RAM, a battery secured with glue, not screws, a keyboard held in with rivets, a display and lid angle sensor no third party can replace without apple. But it has modular ports so I guess that’s something. But I don’t think it’s worthy of IFixIt’s four out of ten reparability score because if it breaks you have to face apple’s repair cost; with no repair competition they can charge whatever they like. You either front the cost, or toss the laptop, leaving me wondering “who really owns this computer?”
Apple doesn't make great computers for the money because they are doing everything possible to make sure that you don't actually own your computer, you just lease the hardware from apple and they determine how long it is allowed to function.
The lid angle sensor discussed in this video replaces a much simpler sensor that has been used in laptops for twenty years AND calibrating the sensor after a repair requires access to proprietary apple software that isn't accessible to either users or third party repair shops. There's no reason for this software not to be included as a diagnostic tool on your computer except that Apple doesn't want users working on apple computers. If your screen breaks, or if the fragile cable that is part of the sensor wears down, your only option to fix this computer is to pay apple.
How long does apple plan to support this hardware? What if you pay $3k for a computer today and it breaks in 7 years - will they still calibrate the replacement screen for you or will they tell you it's time for new hardware EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD HAVE ATTAINED FUNCTIONAL HARDWARE THAT WILL WORK IF APPLE'S SOFTWARE TELLS IT TO?
Look at this article talking about "how long" apple supports various types of hardware. It coos over the fact that a 2013 MacBook Air could be getting updates to this day. That's the longest example in this article, and that's *hardware* support, not the life cycle of the operating system. That is dogshit. That is straight-up dogshit.
Apple computers are DRM locked in a way that windows machines only wish they could pull off, and the apple-only chips are a part of that. They want an entirely walled garden so they can entirely control your interactions with the computer that they own and you're just renting.
Even if they made the best hardware in the world that would last a thousand years and gave you flowers on your birthday it wouldn't matter because modern apple computers don't ever actually belong to apple customers, at the end of the day they belong to apple, and that's on purpose.
This is hardware as a service. This is John Deere. This is subscription access to the things you buy, and if it isn't exactly that right at this moment, that is where things have been heading ever since they realized it was possible to exert a control that granular over their users.
With all sympathy to people who are forced to use them, Fuck Apple I Hope That They Fall Into The Ocean And Are Hidden Away From The Honest Light Of The Sun For Their Crimes.

From Biting Apples to Embracing Galaxies: My Switch to Samsung
Tumblr media
For more than a decade, I've always been using the Apple eco-system. My first modern phone was the iPhone 5 in 2012 and it lasted for a couple of years until I upgraded to the iPhone 10 in 2017 after convincing my father that my phone was dying.
The proof: this photo of my phone bricking every 20 minutes when installing a new iOS when I was in university.
instagram
As time passed, the iPhone X has survived numerous trips overseas, journalism jobs, freelancing gigs, concerts, and dating attempts. But like all tech devices, this one is about to reach its end after an incident where it wouldn't turn on properly when it was being charged.
I had two options: wait for the iPhone 15 to come out or move to Samsung. And based on the article, it's quite obvious what happened next.
One last bite of the Apple - why I love the iPhone
Moving to a Galaxy device has to be the hardest decision I've ever made. My original plan was to save $2000 for a brand new Apple product because the Apple ecosystem is pretty good. I can copy a link or photo on my phone and paste it on my Macbook. Airdrop is pretty convenient. Also, my entire family became Apple snobs ever since the release of Airpods. Also, since I moved out from home, Facetime became the most used method of communication between family members because it was instant.
Another cool feature that the iPhone has is that is very easy to customize. From having an Animal Crossing dark mode theme phone to selecting a case, the choices are ripe for the picking.
Lastly, it's just very easy to use. Unless you're planning to do some complicated stuff like jailbreaking, using an iPhone as an everyday device is very simple. Left it somewhere? Use the "Find my phone" app and annoy the heck out of those who try to steal it. Want music? Drop the file into iTunes and it will sync via iCloud. It's that versatile.
But as my phone was quickly on its final breath, as well as the cost of living crisis, waiting for the iPhone 15 was no longer a valid option anymore. So I had to say goodbye to these nifty features and swap to Samsung.
What it was like making the switch
instagram
I bought the Samsung zFlip 4 during the End of the Financial Year sale, without realising that the zFlip 5 would be released 2 months later. Big oof. The reason I got this phone is because the 512 GB model cost $1300 AUD. The case was $10 from Telstra. I got a cuter one for $100 from Caseify.
If I were to buy the iPhone 15 (or in my case, the iPhone 14 Pro), the 512 GB model would have cost me $2400 + the cost of a case and the cable for the highest speeds. In case you were unaware, the 15 models only come with USB 2 speeds. WTF?! Also, there are the MagSafe accessories like chargers, which would cost even more.
Tumblr media
The reason I chose to get the Samsung zFlip 4 is mostly because it's a flip phone and Samsung marketed it as "bending the laws of physics." Another reason is because of BTS. As a BTS fan, mostly a Suga stan, I learned that the K-Pop star will not hold Apple devices. I remember seeing a TikTok where a fan disguised her iPhone to look like a Samsung and the rapper was shocked until he held it on stage.
I was, however, warned about getting this Samsung model from my aunt. She told me that the battery life is bad and that Apple lasts longer. And she only uses her phone for the most basic usage - calls, text, and Facebook. But based on my experience, the battery isn't that bad… unless I use it for Pokemon Sleep.
Tumblr media
Transferring my data from an Apple to a Samsung device is easier said than done. For starters, it nearly took a whole day for the transfer process to be completed. Second, I needed to use a wireless charger for one of my devices because it took so long.
When it came to the user interface, while it's somewhat different, some similarities made using my new phone not that difficult. It perhaps took a week to get used to the new functions and gestures.
I also liked the new camera. It's much more vibrant in my opinion. Much better than the iPhone X if I'm being honest. And there were times I did try filming like it was an old camcorder due to its flip functionalities.
If I have a complaint, it's that my game saves (except for Pokemon Go and Sleep) aren't transferable. This means all that effort I've placed in Tiny Tower for a year and a bit is gone and I would need to start over because the game is synced to Apple's Game Center. However, all of my texts since my senior year of high school made their way to the new device. WTF?
Also, not all the apps transferred to the new device, which makes sense since some of them were discontinued. But finding the APKs for them became a challenge, especially for a photo editor that I've been using for years. Thanks to the subscription model, it's been removed from the app stores.
Final Thoughts
Swapping to Samsung was probably a good decision to make. For starters, I'm no longer bombarded by my family's group chat messages since I no longer live with them. Second, I can text my boyfriend photos through NORMAL TEXT, not Facebook and discord. The amount of memes I've missed during the earlier parts of our relationship due to device differences was a massive pain and now it's all convenient.
While it's a shame I no longer have access to Siri, adding songs to a Samsung device is much easier compared to Apple since it is basically like a hard drive.
I will miss the Apple ecosystem though. iCloud and Apple Notes are super handy. Airdrop is pretty cool. And the new iOS features in the latest system look super appealing. However, these features are something that I would rarely use. I just need a phone to play games, go on social media, take photos and videos, and make phone calls. I won't be making 3D models of my room.
Looking forward to spending the next 5 years with this Samsung device until I have to make the switch once more.

How Fast Is the Apple USB Type-C Cable for Charging and Data Transfer?
About
In the rapidly evolving world of technology, having the right accessories for your devices is essential. One of the most important accessories for Apple users today is the Apple USB Type-C cable. Whether you're looking for faster charging, seamless data transfer, or a more versatile connectivity solution, this cable offers everything you need to enhance your Apple device experience.
Tumblr media
What is the Apple USB Type-C Cable?
The Apple USB Type-C cable is a highly versatile and powerful cable designed to meet modern connectivity needs. With its small, reversible design, USB Type-C offers faster data transfer speeds, high-resolution video output, and enhanced charging capabilities compared to older USB standards.
Available in various lengths, such as 1 meter and 2 meters, the Apple USB Type-C cable can be used with a range of Apple products, including the latest iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and other accessories like the AirPods Pro 2nd generation. Its universal compatibility with USB-C devices ensures that you can use it with not just Apple gadgets, but also a wide variety of third-party devices and accessories.
Benefits of Using an Apple USB Type-C Cable
Fast Charging: One of the key reasons to invest in an Apple USB Type-C cable is its fast-charging capabilities. When paired with a compatible power adapter, such as the Apple 20W USB-C power adapter, this cable delivers incredibly fast charging for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. For instance, it can charge an iPhone from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes. This makes it perfect for users who need a quick power boost during busy days.
Enhanced Data Transfer: The Apple USB Type-C cable supports high-speed data transfer, enabling you to quickly move large files, photos, and videos between devices. Whether you're transferring data between your iPhone and MacBook or backing up your iPad to a hard drive, the USB-C cable ensures your files are transferred in a matter of seconds.
Reversible Design: Gone are the days of fiddling with connectors to make sure they’re inserted the right way. The USB Type-C connector is completely reversible, meaning you can plug it in either way, saving you time and frustration.
Versatile Compatibility: While the Apple USB Type-C cable is designed for Apple devices, its compatibility extends to any device that uses the USB-C standard. This means you can use the same cable to charge or transfer data between Apple devices, Android phones, Windows laptops, tablets, and other accessories like external drives or USB-C hubs.
Durability: Apple is known for its high-quality materials, and the USB Type-C cable is no exception. The cable is built to be durable and withstand everyday wear and tear. Whether you use it at home, in the office, or while traveling, you can rely on the cable for long-term use.
How to Use the Apple USB Type-C Cable
Using the Apple USB Type-C cable is simple and intuitive. Here are a few common scenarios where this cable can come in handy:
Charging Your Devices: Plug one end of the USB Type-C cable into your Apple device and the other into a compatible USB-C power adapter to charge your device. You’ll notice faster charging times compared to older USB standards.
Data Transfer: If you need to transfer photos, videos, or other files between devices, simply connect the Apple USB Type-C cable to both devices. This can be especially helpful when moving data between an iPhone or iPad and a MacBook or external storage device.
Video Output: For users who need to connect their Apple devices to external monitors or displays, the USB Type-C cable can also transmit video signals when paired with the right adapters.
Conclusion
The Apple USB Type-C cable is an essential accessory for anyone using modern Apple products. With its fast charging capabilities, enhanced data transfer speeds, and universal compatibility, it simplifies everyday tasks and makes your Apple devices more efficient. Whether you're upgrading your charging setup or looking for a reliable data transfer solution, the Apple USB Type-C cable offers the power and versatility you need to stay connected in today's fast-paced digital world.

I Love My Little Charging Bundle
I recently wrote about not needing USB-A, and mentioned the USB-C Lifestyle™️. That reminded me of a little bundle of cables I always keep in my backpack. So here are some …
Advice for frustration-free charging
When I talk about "chargers", I generally refer to the brick itself – not including the cable.
1) Buy extra
Here’s my bundle:
Tumblr media
The trick is that I don’t need any of these elsewhere – they are extra. I have other chargers in my office, next to my bed, etc. I get that this is a bit more wasteful than just having one charger that you move around everywhere. But I think this is resource spending that’s worth it – and hopefully the devices you buy don’t come with (sub-par) chargers you don’t need. Furthermore, try to keep chargers for a long time.
2) Think about colour and texture of the cables
These are the cables in the bundle:
USB-C, 3 meters (black, braided)
MagSafe for Mac (light gray, braided)
Lightning, 1 meter (white)
Micro-USB (black)
As you can see, all of them have a different combination of colour and texture. This makes it easier to pick out the correct one!
3) Don’t buy “original” chargers
In general, buying “original” accessories will give you something that might be pricier, but at least is among the best. But when it comes to chargers, and especially compared to Apple, the third-party chargers are objectively better. The reason being that Apple doesn’t use GaN, a relatively new technology that allows for significantly smaller size to power ratio.
Mine’s a 65 watt Anker charger 🖇️, that I really like. Because while I don’t necessarily recommend getting chargers from Apple/Samsung/etc., I do recommend getting a “name-brand” one. Anker is a brand I’ve always been pleased with, so I haven’t tried many others. But I think Ugreen and Belkin might be decent as well. Would love to hear about it if you have other recommendations I can add here!
4) Get enough wattage, but not more
The number you want to look at when buying chargers, is the wattage. Here’s an overview:
5 watts: The old, little iPhone chargers. Not worth using.
20 watts: Great for phones, adequate for tablets. Will charge most laptops, but a bit slowly.
30 watts: Good for tablets, adequate for laptops.
65 watts: Around the max for devices like the MacBook Air. More than fast enough for my MacBook Pro as well.
100 watts: Great for fast charging of more demanding laptops.
There’s no issue with using a more powerful charger than necessary – you can safely plug your phone in a 100-watt charger. But they become larger, and more expensive, as they increase in size – so that’s why I recommend getting enough, but not more.
In general, I use 30 watts for chargers I have “here and there” – and I carry 65 watts in my backpack. I’ve never needed more.
5) Consider having fewer(!) ports
I get the urge of buying chargers with more than one port –** and occasionally that’s absolutely a great option**.
Tumblr media
The charger above is in my kitchen, with a MagSafe puck 🖇️ and USB-C cable always connected. It provides 47 watts – but that’s, obviously, shared between the ports. It tries to doll out the power to where it’s needed – but it doesn’t always work flawlessly. So sometimes I have to unplug the MagSafe puck to get more juice for the USB-C cable (even though I don’t have any devices on the puck).
But for the times when you “always” need two outputs, I’d still go for one of these. But the reason I went for the one-port-version for my backpack, is that I really like the simplicity and reliability of always knowing what you’re getting. When I want to charge several things at once, I can usually charge through another device. For instance, I’ll charge my phone via my iPad or MacBook, or iPad via the MacBook.
Bonus recommendation: 3-in-1 charger(s)
If you have a smartwatch, like my wife, you might want something other than just loose cables for your travels. So I bought this for her one Christmas:

I swapped out the charger it came with, to one from Anker, that was smaller while providing the same wattage. Then I placed the one I got with it somewhere in the house where size doesn't matter. I also swapped the cable for a longer one. This experience is a good example of why I, in general, prefer it when charger/cables are not included. Because then you can, instead, buy better ones/the type you need. However, I don't mind there being a bundle available that includes these things.
This is the Mophie 3-in-1 charger. There are many variants of 3-in-1 chargers, but the 2023 version of the Mophie charger has two important details:
The MagSafe/Qi 2 pad in the middle charges the full 15 watts,
and the Apple Watch can fast charge.
The latter is not true of the previous versions of the Mophie charger.

You can recognise the previous version, which I don't recommend getting, on the travel case. It doesn't have a zip, but instead has this button and rubber band.
So, when researching these chargers, always check the charging speed of the different parts! However, if you always charge over-night, you might not need the fastest charging – and something like form-factor might weigh more. I’m just saying it’s good to be aware. Also, keep in mind how powerful the power brick needs to be.1
So, my summation is:
Buy extra. Don’t just move around one charger. (My wife only uses the Mophie above while traveling.)
Think about colour and texture of the cables, to make the different types easy to pick out.
Don’t buy “original” chargers. Instead, buy name-brand GaN chargers, from brands like Anker.
Get enough wattage, but not more. 20 watts for phones and tablets, 30 watts for phones, tablets and consumer laptops, and 65 watts for everything mentioned above, but also pro laptops. 100 watts is more niche.
Consider getting fewer ports, as this is simpler and more reliable.
Check charging speed, especially when buying chargers that can charge several devices at once.
Edit: I got an «answer post» from Eric, that I liked! 👌🏻
For the Mophie, it’s at least 30 watt. ↩︎
