WRE

Romaine – he writes for practicality, official forms and reports for his job and he likes crosswords so his handwriting is mostly neat block capitals

El – messy but readable to her most of the time. Romaine does impress on her the need for legible writing on their reports. When it comes to things like writing birthday cards however she puts in the effort and has beautiful handwriting

Sorceress Apprentice

Emeri – he's got elegant handwriting, being well educated and in the fantasy world most people write solely by hand

Bryony – she can read and write, and her handwriting isn't as neat as Emeri's and is much plainer, but she takes pride in writing and the journal she keeps while studying is filled with her notes ranging from things she'd read to entries about her feelings

Fic snippet: An Invitation

A snippet from my supernatural drama WiP featuring shapeshifters and set in modern day UK, on the England-Wales border.

Romaine (Wolf) and El (Cat) are currently working at a supernatural helpline but Romaine was a field agent until taking leave after an incident, and El is biding time until her chance to make field agent. In this snippet, El doesn’t want to go alone to a party her family is having; maybe her friend and colleague Romaine can help.

An Invitation

El glowered as she typed. “My family is having a party,” she said. “Anniversary party for my great-aunt Madelana and her husband Grant. They’ve hired a room at a social club, a DJ, catering, full bar.”

“Sounds nice?” Romaine ventured uncertainly, twisting on his swivel chair to look at her. El was upset about some aspect of this party.

“It might have been, except my cousin Laura will be there,” El fumed. “Laura whom I hate, not Laura I like. Nor Lana from Texas. Laura the smug asshole.”

Romaine typed a few things into the database, updating some records. El’s extended family seemed impossible to keep track of but he was fairly certain he’d not heard of hated!Laura before. “Right.”

“If I show up alone she’ll make a snide comment. She’s engaged to some dumbass but he’s always too busy to come anywhere with her. He’s supposedly jetsetting around the world, saving illiterate llamas or building toys for endangered children or something.” El shook her head. “Flashes her engagement ring, talks about her So Important work in finances in fucking London, and how Findus is combating climate change by travelling the world in aeroplanes and helicopters.”

Despite the obvious hyperbole and sarcasm, Romaine had to ask. “Findus?”

“Finley Dustynn Durant. The fourth.”

“Honestly?” He saw where she’d got the nickname from.

El nodded. “Honestly. And when Laura heard about my field agent application being deferred she sent me this faux sympathy email about how I can’t control my temper and managed to imply that’s why I’m a failure living in the middle of nowhere without a fiancé and how sad I’ll never have a litter of kittens if I don’t hurry up and find a Nice Cat soon.”

Romaine was angry on El’s behalf. “This Laura sounds lovely,” he said with sarcasm.

“Yes!” El’s anger was abating and now she sighed. “Mum wants me to go – she and dad, my sister and brother-in-law and the kids are all going. So I’ll at least have someone to talk to I guess, but I’ll be there alone. Because of course I broke up with Roger! Not that he’d have gone with me anyway. He didn’t like being around so many supernaturals.”

Romaine blinked at that, inclined once again to think El ought to have broken up with Roger much sooner. This Laura business however suggested a reason she hadn’t, a sort of rebellion to date a human, a certain need to be seen to be dating.

“Can’t you take a friend?”

El looked at him, eyes widening in realisation. “You could come with me.”

Romaine paused in his typing. “Me?”

“We’re friends. You’re a Wolf so at least you’re not One Of Those Humans,” El said, dropping air quotes as well as implying the capital letters to emphasize her family’s disdain for her usual romantic partners. “Please?”

“What day?” he asked, more for time to think than out of any chance he had other plans.

“Next Saturday.”

What the hell. Romaine nodded. “All right. I’ll come.”

She beamed at him. “Thank you!”

He’d have time to reconsider or regret it later but for the moment he’d made El happy and that was enough.

Fic snippet: A Pleasant Afternoon (WRE)

WiP: WRE fic snippet. Romaine and El spend a lazy Sunday together. (Note: Armand is Romaine's middle name.) 

After lunch they slumped on El’s sofa, drank more wine, listened to some music. El put the TV on and found a showing of Princess Bride, the movie only five minutes in, and they watched the rest. Halfway through El served up generous slices of chocolate cake and made coffee.

When El had finished her cake she tucked herself up on the sofa, feet on the cushion, knees against Romaine’s leg, one arm against his, sharing his warmth.

After the movie, Romaine stretched, sorry to dislodge El but feeling stiff. “Fancy a walk?”

She nodded. “Want me to walk the Wolf?”

“Would you? Thanks.”

Romaine went upstairs to get ready, El saying she needed to use the toilet, tie up her hair, and find a coat.

A few minutes later she came to meet him, pushing open the door which he’d left ajar. She was wearing a grey hoodie with the slogan “I am a cat” on it and the hood even had little ears sewed on it. Romaine, now in wolf form, snorted at the hiding in plain sight pun and then used his nose to nudge the collar and lead he’d found from a bottom drawer and put on the coffee table.

El put the collar on him but not too tightly. The lead was a slip lead, a green and white striped cord with a leather stopper which she didn’t bother to adjust since he wouldn’t be pulling at her, and a large hand holder loop.

“Keys?” she asked. Romaine whined, having forgot about that and gestured to the key box.

El picked up his keys and slid them into her pocket alongside her own, clipped to the belt loop on her trousers for security.

She pulled the door so it locked behind them. On the way out, they met Mrs Calloway, just coming back in with a newspaper tucked beneath her arm.

“Oh this must be that beautiful dog,” Mrs Calloway said. “Can I pet him?”

El glanced down at Romaine. He gave what passed for a nod and pulled forward a little.

“Sure,” El said.

Mrs Calloway crouched down and stroked Romaine’s head between his ears. “Who’s a lovely boy, yes you are, aren’t you! So big and handsome. What’s his name?”

El hesitated only for a moment. “Armand.”

“Oh, that’s lovely.” Mrs Calloway stood with only minor difficulty. “Where’s his owner?”

“Romaine had to work,” El improvised. “I said I’d walk Armand for him.”

“It’ll be nice, them having you around,” Mrs Calloway said approvingly. “Well have a good walk. I’m going to go and make a nice cup of tea.”

As they walked to the park, El said, “Sorry about that. Hope you didn’t mind.”

Romaine lifted his nose and snuffled at the palm of her hand, reassuring her.

There were a few people in the park, an older couple walking hand in hand, a cyclist who went whizzing by wearing a hi-vis jacket, a young woman jogging. El took them along a curving path to a large patch of grass and slipped off the lead.

Romaine ran around, enjoying the freedom. He circled the grass, coming back to El frequently as an obedient dog would do. A woman in her thirties came along with her dog, some sort of Staffordshire cross. The dog sat down next to her owner, unsure what to make of Romaine. Some dogs were terrified of Wolves, knowing the difference between dog and Wolf, some went on the defensive, while others didn’t seem to care.

“Is he friendly?” the woman asked.

“Yes,” El said, the lead in one hand, the other tucked into the pocket of her hoodie.

Romaine trotted over and rolled over, showing the dog his belly as sign of trust.

“Go on, Trixie,” the woman coaxed. Reluctant, Trixie edged forward and sniffed at Romaine. He stayed still and, satisfied, Trixie wagged her tail.

Romaine and Trixie played for a while, he being careful of the dog’s small size. While some might have disdained to interact with a dog, Romaine saw no difference than a human playing games with their pet, or an adult with a child.

The woman whistled. “Come on, Trixie.”

Trixie trotted back over, had her lead clipped to her collar. The woman said goodbye to El and headed off towards the north gate of the park. Romaine padded over to El, ready to leave also.

“You had fun?”

He nuzzled at her and she laughed.

When they got back home he shifted back, pulling his trousers on without underwear. “Thanks, El.”

“Any time. I guess I should go back home.”

“You sure? You can stay a while longer. I was going to shower and then make tea. You can put the kettle on while I shower.”

El hesitated. “I don’t want you to get sick of me. And I’ve got a few things I need to do on the laptop. Next time though?”

“Sure. You know where I am if you change your mind.”

“Thanks, Rommie. I’ll see you tomorrow. We can drive to work together.”

When she’d left, he took a shower, enjoying the hot water, and shifted halfway through to let the Wolf enjoy a wash too.

WRE: Was he avoiding shifting because of the pain? It was sharp and unmistakable but over quickly enough. 

FOREVER

Sorceress Apprentice: It seemed forever ago, before she'd fallen in love, before she'd discovered her magic. 

WRE: "Mostly. It's not what I want to do forever, but it's a step in the right direction." 

DROP

Sorceress Apprentice: Reassured, Emeri closed his eyes fully and Bryony moved to prise the cup from his hand lest he drop it.

 WRE: "Roger made me drop him at the gym which is out of my way and I hit every red traffic light on the way here." Edit: desperatelytryingtowriteabook didn’t specify words so I did the same ones in their post; updated with new words, which I’ll do later ;P

Bryony doubts that Emeri could ever truly love a commoner, despite his reassurances, but more pressing is the issue that he's dying and their time together is limited – though Bryony won't give up hope on that score and wants to make the most of their time together regardless.

For the project overall I was stunned by "The Wolf and the Moon" (Karliene) because it has these lyrics

On a cold winter night… A wolf lay wounded and cold A fight with a bear That left him exposed He lifted his gaze To the shimmering moon And death was growing near

At the start of the novel Wolf shifter Romaine is wounded, betrayed, he believes by his partner, a Therian whose animal form is a bear.

The moon was full, a bright white against the indigo sky. Romaine lay on the grass and stared up at the cloudless expanse, struggling for breath.

  His hand found the wound. When he lifted his hand to his face, his fingers were dripping with his blood.

  It seemed impossible. Yet here he was, shot with silver, or on such a night he'd already be healing instead of haemorraging.

OC Family meme

I've answered variously for WRE Romaine, El, Kit and SA Bryony, Kerine, Emeri, Sabrina.

1.  How good is their relationship with their parents and siblings? What about the extended family (uncles/aunts, cousins, niblings…)? Romaine is not close to his family and an only child, very much rare for Wolves.

2.   What’s their position in the family (Oldest, middle child, youngest, only child…)? Bryony is older than her sister Kerine.

3.   Do they have any step-family and/or half-siblings? Kit has a half-sister named Winter.

4. Which family member is your character closest to? Bryony and Kerine are very close.

5.  What are their family traditions? Emeri’s family has long taken care of the village in a nobles/non-nobles arrangement. El has a ton of Christmas decorations and rituals though I’m not sure how much of that is familial and how much is just her own doing ;)

6.  Is your character closer to their paternal (father’s family) or maternal (mother’s family) side of the family? Emeri was closest to his paternal uncle Ezra and Ezra's wife, Magda, who raised Emeri and Sabrina after the death of their father.

7.   Does your character have any father or mother figure? Emeri had Aunt Magda

8.   Do they consider their family to be their friends? El, somewhat, Bryony yes, Romaine no, Kit yes for Winter, Emeri only Sabrina.

9.  Do they have children? Biological, adopted…? Do they take care of a family member (sibling, parent, grandparent…)? No. Additionally Bryony is childfree, and El is leaning that way, same for Emeri and Romaine respectively. Bryony and Kerine take care of each other.

10. Do they share the same trade/job or Interests/hobbies as a family member?  Emeri and Sabrina are carrying on their family's traditions of taking care of the village. Bryony and Kerine aren't following in their parent’s trades, and both Romaine and El are new to the Agency in the fieldwork capacity.

10 What age do they most want to be right now?

Oh that's interesting.For El and Romaine it's especially complicated because supernaturals age slowerthan humans. I think they're fairly happy with where they're at, sort of earlythirties in human terms, a little older in reality.

20 What do they like that nobody else does?

That's a tough one. Romaine probably likes some food thatmost people have never even tried because he grew up in Quebec but is nowliving in the UK.

For the two part drabble game prompts, asked by @desperatlytryingtowriteabook, thanks! El/Romaine, #20 both are drunk and happy & #8 “You’re lucky you’re cute, because your taste in music is awful.”

The last time Romaine had sat down with a bottle of whisky in El's company like this it had been at El's flat, the one she'd shared with Roger, and he'd been summoning up the nerve to recount the whole story of what had happened the night he'd almost died.

Tonight they were in El's flat, the one he'd helped her move into, just one floor below his own, and they were both happy.

Romaine was lying on the floor, admiring the glow of the multicoloured LED lights El had strung up around the room. She was sitting on the rug, tequila in one hand, a sausage roll in the other.

The music – something from the late eighties, he thought - ended and another song began, something discordant with vaguely offensive lyrics.

"You're lucky you're cute, because your taste in music is awful," he teased.

El stuffed the sausage roll in her mouth and with one hand freed reached behind her for one of the fluffy cushions she kept on the couch (this took two attempts because she was already at least as drunk as he was) and tossed it at him. He grabbed for it and tucked it behind his head.

"Rude," she said, when she'd swallowed her food. "Anyway that's not one of mine. Spotify just has ideas about what I like."

"It bases those ideas on things you've already listened to."

"Well you haven't complained about any of the others." She downed her tequila, then stuck her tongue out at him. "I'd skip the track but I'm too lazy to move."

"Even for another sausage roll?"

"I didn't think there were any left." El got to her feet, swaying only once, glared at the snack plate where only some cracker crumbs and a tiny piece of cheese remained. "There aren't!"

"No," Romaine agreed, "but now you're up, skip the track. And put your tablet on the floor so you can reach it."

El gave a dramatic sigh as she reached for the tablet. "You're so bossy."

"That's because I'm your boss."

She sat down next to him. "Not for ever. I'll be a fully fledged agent one day and then we'll be partners."

He tipped his head. "El. We are partners. I'm teasing."

"You are the senior agent and I'm the trainee."

Romaine reached out, squeezed her knee. "I'll always be the senior agent," he said. "Unless you find a way to travel back in time and work at the agency before me, I'll always have more experience."

"I can think of more interesting things to do if I could time travel." She tipped her head, hair swishing around her. "Would you change the past, if you could? You could go back and warn yourself, avoid getting shot."

He considered it for a moment. "Then we might never have met."

"I'd have become a trainee agent anyway."

"But we wouldn't be partners." He'd protested at the idea initially, of mentoring anyone, even El.

"I'm surely not worth all that pain you went through."

Romaine tried to sit up. This, as for El's cushion grabbing, took a second attempt, but he wanted to look into her eyes for this conversation. "El, come on. It's not like you to be maudlin. What's wrong?"

She shrugged.

"You have to stop dating humans if they've given you a low opinion of what you're worth," he said softly. This was the first time he'd ever seen her this insecure.

"I know. Anyway. Maybe I just need more tequila."

He passed her the bottle and she took a long swig. He reached for his glass and took a sip of whisky.

"If time travel was possible," Romaine said thoughtfully, "and I wanted to change my past, I don't think I'd risk it. But if I did want to avoid getting shot, I'd try to make sure I'd still meet you. Train you. Be your partner. Be your friend." As always the word friend seemed inadequate but if he wasn't careful, especially after so much liquor, they might cross boundaries he wasn't willing to cross (maybe not now; maybe not with her; maybe not ever for anyone…)

"Rommie." She gave him a smile, drank more tequila. "I love you too."

She was always more willing to test the boundaries, always more open with her feelings. He liked that about her. Liked many things about her. Would always want her in his life in some form.

Romaine emptied his glass. Sure, things were complicated but he wouldn't want them any other way.

For the Friendship meme; rather than wait for someone to ask me things, I'm going to do the meme for some of my OCs – I hope some of you will do the same :)

Who’s your character’s best friend? SA: Bryony – her sister, Kerine     

How  did your character meet their best friend? SA: Bryony and Kerine are sisters

How many friends does your character have? How close are they? SA: Bryony – not many. She's friends with a woman named Jenna and sometimes babysits Jenna's son

Who  would they invite to a sleep-over? What would they do? WRE: El would invite Romaine and maybe Kit, and they'd eat and drink and watch movies…I mean that's kind of what they tend to do anyway

are they a “Make friends with everyone” type or a “I’ve got three friends and  I love them” type? SA: Bryony and Emeri are both a 3 friends and I love them type WRE: Romaine's a 3 friends type, El and Kit are more outgoing and Kit in particular tries to bond with people in general

Who  would help them hide a body? SA: Bryony and Kerine are close; once she's met Emeri she'd also ask him for help like that! WRE: Romaine and El are partners so…they're also pretty much cops so there'd have to a good reason for hiding rather than reporting a body ;P I think Kit would call Romaine because so long as he thought there was a good reason, Romaine would be good at that; Romaine also has forensic contacts he can use if he's covering up an actual body rather than a metaphorical "who would you call"

Who do they call at 3am, drunk and potentially lost somewhere? SA: they don't have a phone but Bryony relies most on Kerine WRE: Kit or El would totally call Romaine once they've adopted him as their most sensible friend :) Also Kit is totally the one to be drunk and lost somewhere.

Who in their friend group has the map, the snacks and the first aid kit? SA: Kerine's a little more organised than anyone else is WRE: Romaine's likely to be prepared, though El and Kit are likely to have snacks, unless Kit's eaten them already!

Do they consider their friends to be family? SA: Bryony and Kerine literally are WRE: El and Romaine become so.    

Do  they share friends with their siblings or significant others? SA: siblings Emeri and Sabrina have shared friends from university, most   notably Rylan. WRE: For Romaine, no. For El, not much, though she does know some of her family's friends and her extended family is large.

fic snippet: Domesticity

WRE fic snippet; while they get ready for an evening out, Romaine discovers something about El's approach to domesticity.

"I wanted to wear this but it got creased," El said, holding up the blouse. She was wearing black leggings and a black crop top, the blouse in question red with a black and gold pattern. Her makeup was done but her hair was roughly bundled up with a couple of scrunchies, yet to be styled.

Romaine was already dressed for going out in neatly pressed trousers and a crisp white shirt that he was being careful not to spill coffee on while El got ready. He regarded the blouse with a critical eye. "A little bit. You've got time to iron it."

"I don't iron!" El sighed. "It'll take a while to warm up the steamer."

Romaine blinked a few times. "What do you mean you don't iron?"

"I don't iron," she repeated. "What's to understand?"

"How?"

El shrugged. "I buy things that need little or no ironing mostly. Try to hang things like blouses and dresses up carefully so they don't normally crease. I've got a mini steamer for cleaning and sometimes I use that to get any creases out."

Which was all very practical up until this point.

"Are you telling me you don't even own an iron?"

"I don't iron," El said again. "Why would I need one? Oh, one time I had to make do, because an iron and brown paper is the best way to get candle wax out of materials but that's not going to work here."

She checked her watch, frowned.

Romaine gave a long suffering sigh. "I have an iron," he said. "Give it to me, I'll go and press your blouse while you finish doing your hair."

El handed it over, kissing him on the cheek. "Thanks, Rommie. You're so domesticated."

"Lucky for you," he said. "Hair, now, or we'll be late."

She laughed and began to release the mass of shining black tresses. She was singing something Romaine had an idea was a Shania Twain number as he headed to his flat to do El's ironing. Later he was going to ask more questions about the candle wax.

He thinks of himself as mostly straight but he’s probably demisexual, maybe grey-ace. Sex isn’t that important to him. He and El become close and later the addition of Kit to their dynamic brings orientation more into question.

Kit Do they wants kids? If they already have kids, do they want more?This would come up in book 2 when he and El are together; El doesn’t want any and is approaching the point she can’t have any. Romaine makes sure Kit knows this and Kit swears he’s not bothered either way, fatherhood has never been a dream he’s had.

El Do they know how to drive?Yes. In fact at the start of WRE Romaine doesn’t have a vehicle of his own and when they start working together El drives them.

Romaine Have they ever broken the law?Probably? Little things like media piracy or speeding. When necessary to break human laws to protect the supernatural community. Overall though he’s a good guy, not a corrupt cop.

Kit Do they have any tattoos?Good question. Probably not but he’s reckless enough to take the risk (supernatural shifters run the risk of a tattoo being damaged the first time they shift afterwards; if it stays the same they’re good ever after)

El Have they ever shot a gun before?She has to learn to become a field agent and job one when Romaine returns to active duty as her mentor is ensuring she’s proficient :)

Bryony Do they like other people’s children?So long as they’re mostly well behaved yes :)  Bryony doesn’t want her own but she babysits for a friend’s son and enjoys it for the space of an afternoon

Emeri Who is someone that they rely on?His sister Sabrina, which is why it’s especially hurtful she leaves. Also Naomi, the local healer, but she’s off on sabbatical when Sabrina disappears, leaving him isolated until Bryony moves in with him.

Sabrina Do they live with anyone? If so, who?She lives with Emeri at their ancestral home until she leaves with a magician - this turns out to be a bad thing however, and she’ll want to return home.

Kerine Do they wants kids? If they already have kids, do they want more?She’s ambivalent, not opposed, but not desperate for them nor as childfree as her sister.

Emeri Do they have a pet?Yes, a black cat with a grey patch, called Clawdine :)Plus he owns two horses.
