How can you not love Vicki Pallister, orphan rescued from some of the most dire circumstances a companion starts in (being emotionally tortured by and unknowingly caring for a mass murderer who killed her father, fuck you bennett), forgives barbara for unknowingly killing her pet, Sandy the Sand Beast, the only creature left in the universe who loves her, so she's a better person than me, and thats all before she even joins the TARDIS, where she and the doctor become time and spaces most chaotic double act. in her first story after joining the tardis she and the doctor are so bored of the nice little holiday they're having at ian and barbara's insistence that when they find a dead body on the side of the road they think it'd be really fun for the doctor to impersonate him so they can meet nero, where they then proceed to cause havoc. the doctor emperor's new clothes nero to cover for his inability to use the instrument he stole from the corpse, and gives nero the idea to start the great fire of rome, meanwhile vicki makes a new friend, the court's poisoner, and very nearly poisons the emperor. she does not give a shit, and the story ends with the tardis team laughing as they watch rome burn. next in the web planet she gets herself another pet monster, in the space museum she tricks a computer into opening the armoury and openly tells it she's going to use the weapons to revolt. she's just delightful, and I wish she were more widely beloved. They're opposites on the surface but have much, much more in common than you'd first assume when you dig into them further, and as the millennia-old archons of friendly neighbouring countries they have a long, complicated history with each other. As the only remaining members of the original Seven, and likely having been through Khaenri'ah's fall together, they might be able to understand and support each other better than anyone else ever could. The surface level differences give them great comedic potential as well. They work great as a straightforward ship, a bitter divorced couple in the background of other ships, a mess that oscillates between them, or a pair of oblivious fools who've been ignorant of the other requiting their feelings for thousands of years. What's not to like?

DrunkxDrunk dynamic is funny, very applicable with comfort and angst because they both such well written characters :]

THE YEARNING. Xiao's true dream is to find freedom but he still feels bound to his contract with Rex Lapis because technically he Did free him from his previous master so therefore his current duties are technically a form of freedom so to look for another form would be a betrayal and then we have the god of freedom who would probably never initiate for fear of issues with consent but probably also just wants to be seen as himself and not just a god and. yeah

It's sunshine x grumpy character I rest my case.

World's silliest bloblobber main. Sounds like a new yorker. Used to be in the octarian army and got selected by Kamabo Co. to be a test subject. An accident from a malfunctioning machine and nearly getting sanitized due to it leaves him with a really nasty chest scar. Hides out in the deepsea metro until Agent 8 dismantles the whole thing. Goes to live on the surface, plays Anarchy with his team and pretends none of that stuff ever happened. Never seen without a shirt on to cover up the scar. "Fuggetaboutit"

From a storytelling perspective, in a game where the premise is reuniting with your lost sibling, these two are excellent foils as siblings who are technically separated but always within reach of each other. I bet that drives the traveler batty, that these two could technically reconcile at any time but Don’t. If you guys aren’t using your free ‘reconcile with your sibling’ card, then give it to them. And one’s even got connections to Khaenri’ah and the Abyss Order! Are these two good siblings to each other? Well. No not really. But the way they were best friends when they were kids and are now bitterly awkward after Diluc’s fratricide attempt (I know he was in a terrible headspace but cmon man. Should’ve at least apologized afterwards.) yet still hang out even in the beginning of the game (see: hanging out in Venti’s story quest and family vacation in GAA 1) is very entertaining. The mask is off now, Diluc. Do you still care about your brother? Kaeya’s internal conflict is very tasty too, still considering Diluc family even if he doesn’t really count himself a Ragnvindr anymore (if he ever did…), and it’s a wonderful narrative metaphor for his conflict of whether he considers himself a Mondstadter despite loving his second home. Kaeya’s a character with a lot of depth from his origins alone, but his personal relationships with the other Mondstadt characters really elevate that and his internal struggles, and none are as important as the family that welcomed him into Mond in the first place. With the exception of the travelers (and Paimon!), I think this is the most important platonic relationship in the game.
