『Marvel vs. Capcom∶ Official Complete Works』 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Sprites
The Marvel vs. Capcom series is affectionately known for it's stellar sprite work, so when Marvel vs. Capcom 3∶ of Two Worlds was announced to have 3D visuals, some fans were a bit disappointed.
Despite it not looking like previous entries in the franchise, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ended up looking great. Less than a year after it's a debut, an updated version titled Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released. This revision added characters like Hawkeye, Frank West, Iron Fist and Firebrand to the roster of playable characters.
In 2012, Capcom teamed up with their frequent collaborator Udon Entertainment to release Marvel vs. Capcom∶ Official Complete Works. This book contains concept art, promotional pieces and other works from the artists who worked on the series.
Two years later, a special "2D" edition of this book with a slipcover featuring sprites of the MvC3 & UMvC3 newcomers was released for a limited time. These new sprites were created by former Udon comic book illustrator and Overwatch character designer, Arnold Tsang.
Interestingly enough, (most of) these sprites were not created specifically for this book. Tsang originally posted these sprites on his DeviantArt page two years before this book was released.
The only exception is Arthur. As seen above, Tsang didn't create new sprites for MvC3's veteran characters like Ryu, The Hulk, Felicia and Magneto.
Storm's sprite is a heavily edited sprite of hers from previous games. Jill also received a new sprite, because her MvC3 incarnation is essentially a brand new character. A new "evil" version, if you will.
Even though he wasn't playable in a previous game, Arthur did appear as an assistant character in Marvel vs. Capcom∶ Clash of Super Heroes, so Tsang used his sprites from that for his collage of characters seen above.
For whatever reason, Tsang created a brand new sprite that more closely resembles his appearance and fighting stance from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the purposes of this book.
Tsang's sprites look like they were created by Capcom's best pixel artists during their heyday. If you're interested in seeing more his art, check out his DeviantArt and ArtStation pages. If you check out his DA page, you might even notice that some of his other sprites would also be retroactively used by one his former employers.

These two, the typical on-the-ides couple who seem so lovey dovey and parent-like to the rest of the cast who I decided to spotlight and make my own OC otp, out of all characters I created. anyway, these two -- Teoh and Mim.....watching them, the HEROINE (blonde) AND THE VILLAIN (caramel hair) ARE BOTH SICK OF IT. That's how disgustingly lovesick they are.

Jess has returned to Malaysia, adjusting to life with her extended family rather than only having her parents around. She frequently doesn't know what the social expectations are, and feels overwhelmed by the weight of all the unsaid things she "should" have just grown up knowing if she and her parents had never left for America when she was a child. When she starts dealing with spirits and gods after Ah Ma possesses her, she's even more out of her depth. The worldbuilding and characterization blend together, as most of what Jess is learning deals with a person or being and how to act around them. The first half was fine, but the second half is where this really shines. In the first part Jess gets a basic idea of what's going on, but then things start to go very badly and she has to adapt quickly with incomplete information. One of my favorite things is how Ah Ma's motivations seem simple but strange early one, then turn into this complex tangle, only to be completely understandable by the end as Jess uncovers long-buried or never acknowledged secrets in her quest to get her life back to normal and the god out of her life.

[Arcane Zoo] Character Journey set for Teoh the Kirunhound.
Memory Between the echoes of thunder the terror birds called to each other as they hunted through the storm. All Teoh knew was, those that ran, were caught.
Growth The pack knew with the rare crimson blooms that it was time. Teoh, having no blood relations in her adoptive pack, was the first to leave. With traditional corded rope and bone-carved tag, she would travel far from this home and claim land of her own. Not sparing a glance back she set off down the flower strewn path.

how did you go about practicing anatomy and backgrounds? i want to practice drawing them more effectively instead of just drawing willy nilly and hoping i get better (i am the epitome of characters floating on a white background)
i'm also extremely bad at both of those things on a technical level, so i can only give very general advice! there's zillions of very in-depth resources on youtube, artists' blogs and patreons, and paid resources like skillshare and domestika, made by people who are very invested in helping you learn, so i recommend seeking out more of those. a few youtubers off the top of my head who post technical art tutorials/demos: teoh yi chie, alphonso dunn, sinix, chris hong. i'm not going to be a good educational resource for many reasons, but here are a few quick notes to hopefully get you started.
in general, technical skills can best be improved by studying/copying things – photographs if necessary, but real life subjects if possible. tracing is also a great practice tool for anatomy as it easily forces you to observe details that you might otherwise miss. (just keep them private, or use license-free stock photos.) some resources for anatomy references, again just off the top of my head: line of action, reference angle, adorka stock.
for backgrounds specifically, it's helpful to think of them more as "environments" (i assume this is the kind of background you mean) and treating them almost as another character in the artwork and not as something to just be added on behind the actual character. approaching them this way means you think about the scenery during the compositional phase and your characters + backgrounds will generally look more like they "belong" together. i find that if i sketch a character, then try to add a background behind it, the bg always looks like an afterthought. sometimes that's all you need, but other times you will actually need to focus on the environment itself.
i don't have as many dedicated environment resources bookmarked as that admittedly just isn't my focus, but pexels and pixabay are both great stock photography sites that you can easily search for photos of environments you want to study. also, if it's safe, just go outside! unlike people, buildings and trees will hold still for you to draw them for free, and don't ask you embarrassing questions. i've been getting more into urban sketching lately and that's given me a small boost for environments, perspective etc, but i will need to work more to see real benefits.
remember, if you directly copy a photo and want to post the results, make sure that either a) you credit the source or b) you're using a copyright-free image/something you've paid for. otherwise, just keep it private!
speaking of keeping things private, something i think few people talk about is copying other artists. if you are trying to figure out a way to stylise something, you can study from other artists' work as well (there's a reason master copies are so popular), but if it's one of your contemporaries, i.e. an artist who's currently active in the community/industry, definitely do not post those, and be careful about taking too many cues into your regular practice. a lot of people talk about how style will "just come to you" but in many instances, style is something that's carefully developed by artists, the result of deliberate design choices after many iterations. so you don't want to just yoink someone else's hard work and creative decisions for yourself! but of course it's natural to be influenced – just make sure you're influenced by multiple sources, including reality.
one of my biggest influences for animal anatomy is justine lee hirten, who's currently inactive, but whose work can be seen if you search up their old handle "mangycoyote"; additionally, mackaroon and aspen eyes. for human anatomy and poses, leslie hung, phobs, maren etc etc. still working to follow more environment artists but genice, aliya chen, and loika spring to mind.
again, anatomy and backgrounds are both pretty big topics that i'm myself not an expert in at all, so this is just a few messy notes that i managed to remember off the cuff. hopefully this, or one of the links, will be of some benefit, however!!

Gary K. Wolfe Reviews Black Water Sister by Zen Cho
June 30, 2021 Gary K. Wolfe
Zen Cho quickly earned a reputation for wit and style with her debut novel Sorcerer to the Crown, with its entertaining but sharp critique of racism, sexism, and colonialism in Regency England, but the novel also introduced a powerful Malaysian witch. Malaysian magic played a more central role in the sequel The True Queen, but none of this should have surprised readers of Cho’s first book, the Crawford Award-winning Spirits Abroad, which will be reissued later this year in an expanded edition from Small Beer Press. The stories in that collection were rich in Malaysian and Chinese lore, and so is Cho’s new novel Black Water Sister. With its contemporary setting, family tensions, and issues ranging from cultural homophobia to predatory real estate development, it may seem a departure for admirers of the Sorcerer Royal novels, but in fact it rings closer to home than almost anything I’ve seen from this talented author. If she was playing with Regency romances in those earlier novels or with wuxia traditions in her novella The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water, here she’s writing in a voice that is utterly contemporary, with a setting that derives from acute character observation rather than historical invention. As much as we might have enjoyed her version of Regency England, those of us unfamiliar with Malaysia come away from Black Water Sister practically feeling we could make our way around Cho’s vivid portrait of Penang without a guidebook.
That is not to suggest that the novel lacks supernatural fireworks. Jess Teoh, an unemployed Harvard grad who had moved to the US as a child, has to return to Malaysia with her parents after her father loses his job, mostly as a result of a serious illness. Not long after, she begins hearing a distinct voice in her head, which turns out to be her recently deceased grandmother Ah Ma, a delightful cross between a cantankerous meddling relative and a more ominous manipulative spirit. Ah Ma has failed or refused to move on because of unfinished business, some of which involves a real estate magnate whose latest development involves destroying the shrine of a local goddess, the Black Water Sister of the title. Jess’s involvement with her grandmother and the goddess – either of whom might take over her body and lend her unexpected strength – leads to some harrowing confrontations with corporate gangsters, including an attempted rape and murder which some readers might find disturbing, but also to an odd near-alliance with the son of the predatory real estate developer.
Along with the supernatural elements is the tale of Jess’s own family, which is compelling in its own way. Jess and her parents have been taken in by a wealthy relative in Penang, at least until her father can earn enough money to afford their own home and, as if Jess didn’t have enough problems adjusting to a society she barely knows and trying to deal with a meddlesome ghost in her head, she’s not yet told her parents that she’s gay, or about her lover Sharanya, whom she hopes to eventually join in Singapore. (The mostly offstage Sharanya is a fairly amorphous character we could do to learn more about.) One of Jess’s more unsettling visions doesn’t directly involve battling ghosts or gods or gangsters, but rather the fear that Jess’s sexual orientation might cause her wealthy relatives to evict her whole family, given Malaysian attitudes toward homosexuality, which the novel doesn’t shy away from. Black Water Sister is suspenseful enough as a supernatural adventure to keep most readers enthralled, but it’s equally engaging on the level of purely mimetic fiction, examining the very real issues of family, culture, and identity that haunt Jess as much as her family ghosts. But then, maybe that’s what family ghosts really are in the first place.

I also have the LottxAnden fever, but I suspect we’re both being delusional. Can you think of logical reason for why these two might get together in Jade Legacy? 🥺
Also, is there a group chat or discord for Green Bone saga?
ohoho mi amigo
“Heike was taller, had nicer arms, and was arguably the better-looking of the two, but there was something about Lott Jin that always drew Anden’s attention. A sulky but sensual curve to his bow-shaped mouth, slightly wavy hair that hung over unsmiling eyes hooded with long lashes. A sort of animal idleness in the movements of his well-proportioned body that made it seem as if he held everything in faint disdain.”
first, we have this part from jade city we’re anden describes lott. i think it speaks for itself 😳
“He did not personally know anyone else who was queer besides Master Teoh, the senior Perception instructor. Lott, he was not sure about.”
“Still, there were times when Anden thought he caught something from the other young man—a gaze held overlong, a quickness to be on the same side in a game of pick-up relayball, an interest glimpsed in an act as mundane as sharing the task of breaking up and clearing debris from a street.”
“In general, however, people were uncomfortable around misfortune and reluctant to admit to their own. He was certain that some people at the Academy tugged their right earlobes behind his back—but glancing at Lott again, watching him pause to draw a forearm over his sweaty brow and stretch his long spine before reaching for another branch, he felt a hurtful pang in his chest to imagine that Lott might be one of them.”
^and then we have all of these from the same scene.
[slightly more spoilery stuff for Jade City and Jade War under the cut]
and also, this after anden and lott get into a fight:
“It was the way Lott was talking, Hilo-jen. He was being disrespectful.”
Hilo nodded in understanding. “You were putting him in his place, then?”
“I …” Anden wasn’t sure. There was the faintest teasing suggestion in Hilo’s voice and in the curve of his eyebrow. Anden was appalled to think that his cousin might suspect some other reason for his emotional outburst at Lott. “I had to say something.”
Note that the only other time Hilo makes a guess like this concerning anden in with cory in the second book, and he’s right in that instance lol.
There are other little things here and there, but for the most part these are the main things in Jade City. Of course, in Jade War, Anden goes to Espenia and gets with Cory and Lott has a separate subplot in Janloon, and they don’t interact much for the book. However, i think it should be noted that a big theme of their relationship was specifically that Cory wasn’t clan and could not survive as a Fist in Janloon, Anden’s home where he wanted to return. It was the basically the big reason for the end of their relationship when push came to shove, which parallels with Lott quite nicely.
Further, in her Reddit AMA, Fonda Lee describes some of Anden’s sub-plot as him having his “first serious romantic relationship”. That’s not worthy of note by itself, but “first” is an interesting specification.
And of course, after they break up and Anden goes on the Zapunyo mission and everything happen, in the very last chapter, Anden sees Lott again:
‘Juen Nu and Lott Jin paused when they saw him.
“Emery Anden,” Lott said after a moment. “Welcome back.”
Lott looked older; he was dressed in a collared shirt and smoke-gray jacket, talon knife sheathed at the hip, wavy hair cut short to show off the jade pierced through the tops of his ears. He didn’t smile, but the adolescent sulkiness that used to hang around his bow-shaped mouth was gone; he spoke slower and more seriously. Unmistakable as a Fist of No Peak.’
oh shit, he’s hot now
in summary, yeah i think there’s a pretty good chance for something lott-emery related in Book 3, considering where there character arcs are at this point (and how their arcs actually compliment each other’s..) and, well, i can’t think of a reason for all of these things if they weren’t going to have something.
Concerning if there’s a discord or a gc, the only discord i’m aware of is the Keeping Up with the Kauls read along one, but on twitter there’s one I could add you too if you dm. I also find the Green Bone fandom is more active on there lol :D

The Garden of Evening Mists
My Review:
8/10
As a Malaysian myself, it was odd watching such a well made film; in fact I would go as far as to say that I am equally astonished and blown away by this movie as it was just so darn good. Well, the movie has been called a heartbreaking love story, although that is true in a certain manner, I think the more proper branding of the movie would be self-healing.
Firstly, I must acknowledge the themes thrown around in the movie, and to me personally it would be the anger and the hatred towards the Japanese post WW2, and as an individual whom has grown up knowing that Japan were known as some of the most respectable and polite individuals on the planet, I found it hard to understand the hatred that was shown towards them still amongst the Chinese community and after viewing this movie I can say that I can kind of see the anger and resentment felt towards them still. But yes, as mentioned before this movie is about self-healing so in the end, we can't continuously allow the past define the way we see life or how we treat others; sure, there are some few rotten apples here and there but the sample size is simply unsuitable for us to judge an entire community based on the few experiences that we have lived through. Thus, the importance of love, mercy and grace.
Okay, on with the praises I have regarding this movie. Cinematography is incredible, my gosh what a beautiful movie. However, I believe that it is so mainly because of the location the movie was shot too and these scenes revolving around the vast environment of Cameron Highlands aren't exactly artistic shots but the imagery within the Japanese house where the garden is located is absolutely stunning.
Although the movie looks stunning, I must bring attention to a certain scene within the movie where the scene could've been better shot which is the scene where the main character, Teoh Yun Ling ponders upon her sister's photograph and the scene plays out in such a way that it felt unnecessary to have a close up on the picture again as it had been done in the earlier part of the movie and the next cut is of her reacting to that picture. This probably isn't an issue for the vast majority but it felt unnatural to me and it stood out too much to my liking. Furthermore, the first 15 minutes of the movie felt choppy to me, this could've been a personal nitpick.
The acting on the other hand, this is a difficult one to comment upon as it was good but as this movie was labelled as a romantic movie, I went in expecting some serious chemistry between Teoh Yun Ling (Angelica Lee) and Nakumuara Aritomo (Hiroshi Abe) and since this movie focuses on the pain Angelica Lee's character, Teoh Yun Ling experiences during the Japanese invasion of Malaya during WW2, there is constant tension between the two characters due to her prejudice against the Japanese people. But looking past all that, I must say that she did a wonderful job portraying a strong character but at the same time broken, she absolutely nailed all the emotions required in each particular scene and her performance truly nailed this movie home and even brought me to tears.
All in all, this was a heartbreaking movie, I went in with some form of expectation after seeing the number of awards it was nominated for at the 56th Golden Horse awards and this movie definitely delivers and this is a movie worth catching in the cinema.

connor + failure
These vids are not mine, I just copied the url for the right moments.
So I was trying to find that one scene in the Eden Club where Hank can say “let’s get outta here, I don’t wanna puke in this fine establishment” because it’s just a great line. Instead I found a similar ending where Connor fails to find the Tracis:
https://youtu.be/NcTptXiqhsk?t=864 (MELOO on YT)
The way Connor says “it’s my fault” makes me want to put my fist through a wall. He says it as if it’s just a given, and it breaks my heart a bit. I’m not trying to like... pity him or anything? Connor’s got SO many respectable, powerful traits about him, and the last thing I’m trying to do here is post a catalyst for woobification. (Connor gets enough of that in this fandom, this man deserves some respect ffs!) But Jesus, the more options you explore in this game, the more you really, truly see it, right there in canon: Connor fully expects to be treated like shit and blamed for everything.
I do think Hank meant his response lightheartedly enough, though - it’d fall in line with Hank’s reaction if Connor fails to catch Rupert:
https://youtu.be/tams0EEqotU?t=271 (Cheng Teoh on YT)
I don’t know, something about the way he says “welcome to the club.” Like, hey man, it’s cool, I fail too all the fuckin’ time.
While we’re at it, please enjoy an Appreciation for Connor’s reaction to Hank saying something is not his fault. When you slot it into context with what he seems to believe about himself in the above two clips, it really makes sense why he would be that stunned right after Hank says “you’d have caught it if it weren’t for me.”
https://youtu.be/tams0EEqotU?t=139 (same vid as above, different part)
Furthermore, waaay later in the game, one particular decision shows Connor gets a sense of self throughout the game and realizes he doesn’t have to take the blame (although this may be one case where he probably should have lol), actually physically defending himself, and for all the times Hank pushes him around I’m pretty sure (?) this is the only time (outside of the literal fight on the Hart Plaza rooftop) that Connor pushes back.
https://youtu.be/xz-BJy2XCjc?t=514 (PS4Trophies)
I dunno, I didn’t mean to go down this rabbit-hole, but Connor’s reactions to people’s blame and/or lack thereof, and the way they can develop throughout the game, are just really telling. And although I hardly ever have him shoot Chloe, I kind of like that it gives you a chance to see a different, developing side of his character.

#lockdownbingo 7 of 8 Prompt 7: New Arrival Bʟᴀᴄᴋ Wᴀᴛᴇʀ Sɪsᴛᴇʀ ʙʏ Zᴇɴ Cʜᴏ 🏮🏮🏮 . "𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒃𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒏." . I have enjoyed author's previous novels which were more of a historical fantasy while this one is set firmly in present time Malaysia complete with Skype, Whatsapp, and absolutely infused with local superstitions. I loved this setting especially with all the food that was mentioned. I'm lucky that I actually have a tin of Milo in the pantry so I could help myself to some but when lockdown's over, I'm going out for a Malaysian feast! . Jessamyn Teoh is a character I can easily empathise with. Her feeling of never being 'at home' anywhere, the pressure she feels from her parents' (and extended families!) expectations, and generally of just feeling lost at this particular junction in her life after having done well at studying but not having been able to secure a good job. Then, on top of all this pressure, she's suddenly hearing a voice in her head and found herself in a world of gods & spirits. She now has to fend for herself from not-so-good-intentions not only from the spirit realm but also the physical. . While I liked the protagonist, loved the familial setting and intrigued by the 'magical' side of things, I found the novel to be quite slow going until approximately the last third where a particular incident then pushed the protagonist for a showdown. And yes, my rather vicious side enjoyed that particular showdown and my more humane side do love the end conclusion. . 🔒 I choose to be thankful that libraries are closed because this forces me to read from my own TBR... even if I bought this book only recently 😅 what's one small thing you can can thankful for this week? 💌 #blackwatersister #zencho #paranormal #fiction #ghosts #malaysia #litcelebrasian #ausbookstagram #ausbookishfeatures https://www.instagram.com/p/CToi4qTPjNP/?utm_medium=tumblr
