[ THIRTY ] : “ you can’t act this way every time i fuck somebody that isn’t you ! ” // nina & brandon
@jinnikaz

Random aspec fictional character HCs
Matthew Cuthbert (Anne With an E)
Asexual + aromantic
Tumblr media
Lived his whole life unmarried like his sister but, unlike Marilla, never had any relationships in the past. Doesn't reciprocate Jeannie's feelings and tells her his love for his adopted daughter (Anne) is the only love he has room for. Was TERRIFIED when Anne tried to set him up with Jeannie.
*(this is specific to AWAE but I think it can apply to book Matthew as well)
Selah Summers (Selah and the Spades)
Asexual + aromantic
Tumblr media
Tbh this one might be canon (or at least heavily implied). Never has been in a relationship. Admits to Paloma that she's just never been interested in anyone in a romantic or sexual way.
Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)
Asexual + aromantic
Tumblr media
Just doesn't seem remotely interested in romance or sex. Gets grossed out/ annoyed when people kiss in front of him.
*(this is specific to the anime, idk about the manga or live action adaptation)
**(I am not caught up on the anime, this may turn out to be incorrect)
Willie Jack Sampson (Reservation Dogs)
Asexual + aromantic
Tumblr media
Never had a love interest or showed attraction in the show (to the best of my knowledge. If she did, I missed it). Also, THIS OUTFIT SPECIFICALLY. Her hoodie is aroace colors and her socks look like a mix of the asexual flag and the aromantic flag.
Lucy Wells (Harlots)
Grey asexual/ greysexual (+possibly aromantic? Maybe demiromantic? I haven't decided yet)
Tumblr media
Born into prostitution but HATES sex. Avoids it as much as she can and by the last season finds a way to do her job without having to have sex. The reason I said grey ace is because she DOES seem sexually attracted to Fallon after some time of being with him (I think? I was a little confused about how she felt tbh).
Birdy (Birdy)
Asexual + demiromantic
Tumblr media
Everyone in his life thinks it's weird that he's so interested in birds and not girls. Admits to Al he doesn't see the appeal of sex at all. Very reluctant to go to prom with Doris and had no idea what to do when she parked the car and offered him sex. I can see him developing romantic feelings after close friendship (like with Al) which is why I think he's demiromantic.
Bilbo AND Frodo Baggins (The Hobbit/ The Lord of the Rings)
Both asexual (+ maybe demiromantic, though I can also see Bilbo as aro)
Tumblr media
Both remained bachelors all their lives. Bilbo lived alone and later with Frodo who was like an adopted son. Frodo lives for a long time with Sam and Sam's wife Rosie. I personally think that Sam and Frodo are in a romantic relationship, while Sam and Rosie are in a sexual relationship. Frodo seems content with this arrangement which is why I believe he's ace.
Ted Buckland (Scrubs)
Asexual
Tumblr media
Simply because of the part where Carla says "I don't want any MAN filming me giving birth unless he's completely asexual" and then Ted walks in with a camera and Carla smiles and says "oh hi Ted!". (I think this was a poorly-aged joke about him being "ugly" more than anything but I'm still claiming it). Also when he sings the duet with Gooch and Gooch says "I want to screw you" while Ted says "I want to kiss you.
Fabian Rutter (House of Anubis)
Asexual
Tumblr media
He's nerdy and into space (I know this is a stereotype but representation is scarce I take anything I can get... you get it right). Also his relationship with Nina is very innocent and I can't see him developing sexual attraction even when he becomes an adult.
Dirk Gently and Bart Curlish (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency)
Dirk- Asexual
Bart- Aromantic
Tumblr media
Neither of them have love interests in the show (although Bart/Ken may have been implied) so this is just how I felt about the characters personally. I think Dirk definitely had a crush on Todd and is gay but I don't think he gets sexual attraction. Bart is the opposite. I can see her developing sexual attractions and feelings but being repulsed by kissing/ dating etc.
*(this is specific to DGHDA, idk about any other versions of these characters)
Anybody feel free to add thoughts and your personal aspec character hcs <3

gillian jacobs, joel mchale, and any other community cast of interest + đŸ‘„
SEND ME AN FC + đŸ‘„Â TO SEE A CHARACTER I’D etc etc
gillian jacobs
I rly love the idea of her in a Pagliacci role!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like her vibes during her depressive episodes in Love really radiate that suicidal clown energy and I would def play her as a small time comedian who tells herself that she’s constantly chasing near-death situations in search for material and not in search for oblivion.
also she’s been in so many raunchy movies that i feel like she could definitely play a nymphomaniac. and this is maybe an unrelated tangent but,,,  you see a lot of promiscuous female characters in the rpc, but i’ve never seen one who’s actually interested in sex..? usually the trend is female characters who feel unloved and use sex as a fill-in or gateway to a sense of intimacy. and this isn’t any shade at, like, nina’s character zelda or yam’s character nikki (especially because i use the same trope with my character genie), but when you combine all of the muses with this characterization together, i feel like we as a community accidentally enforce the idea that women don’t get titillated and just use romance as a bargaining chip for love?? đŸ€Ș
idk maybe it’s just my experience but i always see the love-starved harlot more than any legit horny girls so lets get more of those and lets use gillian jacobs for the roles because thinking about it now i’m pretty sure that even her character on Love has that same characterization. damn
Tumblr media
joel mchale
I’m determined!!!!!! to use him for something!!!!!
my first priority is gwen’s rp americana; originally i thought he would be good for The Professor bt i haven’t had any rly novel ideas to bring to the table for that skeleton yet and i wanna avoid using him in the same career as his Community character. plus i think i’d want to play him in a skeleton that compliments him being like 6â€Č5″ and jacked. hes also rly.. aryan looking
so he could make a perfect Detective if i can get over my hang-ups and play a cop in remotely good faith. but failing that i might end up applying for The Suspect w/ him.
on the flipside, I feel like he’d be rly good for a p.i. character that’s been floating around my head for a long time but whom I haven’t rly had the chance to develop bc I’ve pretty much just been in college rps for the last half a decade. woulda considered this muse for MW if i wasn’t already planning to bring in tom/sal.
that character is a Hunter S Thompson type— tragically optimistic and repeatedly outraged every time mankind disappoints him; constantly trying to believe in the best of people in an industry where he’s dealing with the most depraved individuals. tried to unionize his private investigation firm (love the futility of trying to organize behind the back of the boss of a band of snoops) and wound up getting underhandedly fired so he had to go independent. hardened more in demeanor than heart; numbs the hell of being repeatedly let down with a rock & roll lifestyle that he should’ve outgrown in his thirties. still clinging onto a Gen X obsession with authenticity that obnoxiously makes him roll his eyes at any cashier who smiles and tells him to have a great day. comes across as crass and tactless, desensitized to vulgarity and clumsy when it comes to tenderness despite perpetually yearning for it. compulsively anti-authority to the point of impairing his judgment at times; easily manipulated by anyone who portrays themselves as an underdog. probably comes from a family without a nurturing female presence; could definitely picture him with a businessman younger sibling whom he resents because they’ve “sold out” (read: they’re flourishing financially) while he’s 48 years old and has no sheets on his bed because it’s been a week and he still hasn’t taken them out of the dryer and he keeps passing out on the couch anyway so he’s not really thinking about it.
The biggest struggle in using McHale for this character is that he’s a little too fratty and it’s hard to picture him as this chainsmoking gonzo. but i try to play fcs against type and i feel like he always gets cast as characters who are wealthy/charming/two-faced/detached/nihilistic, and this is definitely as far away from that as i can get. maybe ill do a deep dive into his filmography and find something where he wasnt playing a white collar hunk or douchebag. idk
,,we’ll see. maybe ill use a completely different fc for that character and use mchale for one of the americana skeletons instead?? idk i havent gotten that far yet but i cant stop making gifs of him i’m having so much fun i want to use him so bad idk
one last option is like
ever since those reddit stories got popular, ive always wanted to play a search-and-rescue officer for a national park? and i feel like he almost has forest ranger vibes in the later seasons of community when he has the beard. i dont know where i would play this character but to be fair i have literally no clue where i would play a private investigator either so it’s. yeah
Tumblr media
donald glover
i played him back when i used to write in rly wild and campy/comedic supernatural/genre plots!! the original conceit of that character was a law school dropout who swindled an eldritch demon out of his almighty powers, but had such low motivation in life and such a one-track mind that he never thought to use it for any kind of world domination, and instead tried to use it to win back and impress her by giving himself a promotion to manager of the bowling alley he worked at, or make her life without him seem subconsciously bleaker by doing innocuous bullshit like making her breakfast cereal have less marshmallows in it than usual. i don’t know if i would revisit him, but if i did it might be fun to have him have a jackass genie type of relationship with another character in a 1x1, or drop the supernatural aspect entirely and reimagine him as a burnout who suddenly inherited a huge amount of money, only for it to gradually be revealed that it came from some shady means, or something. i don’t know. fucking love his tag on my blog though
Tumblr media
alison brie
I think one of the reasons I resent Annie Edison so much is because you can tell Dan Harmon was too obsessed with her to let her be the butt of any jokes or make her look bad in any way, and so even though Alison Brie is an extremely charming and funny actress, she never got to portray any really human or interesting flaws, because all of Annie’s negative traits were just the kind of corny weaknesses you list in a job interview (she’s just too driven!!! a perfectionist to a fault!!~~) and I think that by season 3 she became the thing every viewer was worried Britta would be in the pilot (boring moral compass of a carrot dangling in front of the male protagonist to motivate his character growth). And it just feels like a waste of an actress who could easily find humor in an uglier character and make them sympathetic. So I genuinely want to do something like that with her, like make her a former activist who completely sold out her morals for a gig as a commentator on a corporate news outlet or working on softening PR for some Raytheon or Lockheed Martin type of company. I also love villains with her mousy-petite-big-blue-eyed disney-faced look who are more perniciously manipulative and unsuspecting, so I’d love to do that.
on an unrelated note: she looks sm like natalia dyer and especially after she got really skinny circa 2016, she would be a rly good timeskip cast for the older, strung-out version of my character max?
wld definitely gif brie in Sleeping With Other People & How to Be Single & Community s5 + s6 if sage and i ever went through with that timekip plot or if i ever found a place to play a conniving daffodil.

Shadow and Bone: Netflix Grishaverse Series Reveals Cast
https://ift.tt/2M7Vm1S
Netflix will be bringing Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone series to television with Bird Box writer Eric Heisserer as showrunner.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
In its ongoing bid for total media domination, Netflix is turning to one of the oldest kinds of media: books.
The streaming giant announced today that it would be adapting the Grisha fantasy trilogy. The Grisha trilogy comes from American author Leigh Bardugo and is made up of the novels Shadow and Bone (2012), Siege and Storm (2013), and Ruin and Rising (2014). Another novel, Six of Crows was released in 2015 and is set in the "Grisha-verse." Netflix specifically mentioned Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows in their announcement as the books being adapted.
Shadow and Bone will be eight episodes and Netflix has brought out their creative big guns for it. Eric Heisserer (the writer of Netflix's uber hit Bird Box) will produce the series and serve as showrunner. Shawn Levy via his 21 Laps imprint and Pouya Shahbazian will produce the series as well. Levy, who previously produced Netflix's other uber hit Stranger Things, also produced Heisserer's Oscar-nominated sci-fi film Arrival. Pouya Shahbazian has experience with fantasy books, having produced the Divergent series.

The Grishaverse books have sold 2.5 million copies in English and have been trasnlated into 38 languages. The story continues later this month with the publication of King of Scars.
The Grisha series was previously acquired by Harry Potter producer David Heyman via Dreamworks to be adapted into a film series in 2012 but clearly nothing has come of that. That's all well and good, as Netflix seems to have a solid handle on this whole book adaptation thing anyway.
Shadow and Bone Cast
Netflix’s Shadow and Bone has revealed seven more cast members for its already-immense ensemble, as reported by Deadline. They include the following actors, who join the series as recurring players:
Calahan Skogman, a newcomer, as Matthias. “A Fjerdan witchhunter raised to despise the Grisha and their magic.”
ZoĂ« Wanamaker (Killing Eve, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) as Baghra. “A ruthless teacher and trainer, determined to hone the power of each of her charges.”
Kevin Eldon (Dad’s Army: The Lost Episodes, Game of Thrones) as the Apparat. “The mysterious spiritual advisor to Ravka’s royal family.”
Julian Kostov (Treadstone, Berlin Station) as Fedyor. “A free-spirited Heartrender and loyal follower of General Kirigan.”
Luke Pasqualino (Snatch, The Musketeers) as David. “A brilliant Fabrikator who feels most at ease with his nose buried in a scientific treatise.”
Jasmine Blackborow (School’s Out Forever, Aamir) as Marie. “An Inferni who tries to teach Alina the social rules of the Little Palace.”
Gabrielle Brooks (Young Vic Theatre’s Twelfth Night, Regents Park Theatre’s Midsummer Night’s Dream) as Nadia. “A Squaller who befriends Alina despite opposition from Zoya.”
Tumblr media
Netflix recently revealed the main cast for Shadow and Bone. The series regulars will include the following (with character descriptions provided by Netflix):
Ben Barnes (Westworld) will play General Kirigan. Known as the Darkling to his enemies, The commander of the Second Army—the kingdom's magical military elite, who is determined to see his nation freed from the Shadow Fold no matter the cost.
Freddy Carter (Pennyworth) will play Kaz Brekker. A rising star in the criminal underworld with a gift for unlikely schemes and a thirst for vengeance.
Jessie Mei Li (Last Night in Soho) will play Alina Starkov. An orphan and soldier whose latent power may be the key to setting her troubled country free.
Archie Renaux (Voyagers) will play Malyen Oretsev. Alina's childhood friend and a gifted tracker whose world unravels after a brutal ambush in the Shadow Fold.
Amita Suman (Doctor Who) will play Inej. A key member of Kaz's gang. Known as the Wraith, she is a dangerous spy with a troubled past and impeccable knife skills.
Kit Young (London Bridge Theatre’s A Midsummer Night's Dream) will play Jesper Fahey. A gambler and sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager—even one as risky as running with Kaz.
Recurring characters include:
Sujaya Dasgupta (Press) will play Zoya Nazyalensky. A valued soldier who can manipulate the weather, as arrogant as she is powerful.
Danielle Galligan (Game of Thrones) will play Nina Zenik. A joyful, pleasure-loving Heartrender—who can kill without ever laying a finger on you.
Daisy Head will play (Harlots) will play Genya Safin. A Grisha who is able to manipulate physical appearance, Genya is an outsider at the royal court, forced to serve Ravka's queen.
Simon Sears (Winter Brothers) will play Ivan. A dangerous soldier loyal only to General Kirigan.
Shadow and Bone Plot Details
The amount of impressive in-house Netflix talent on Shadow and Bone could prove useful, as the story is pretty massive. The official logline reads:
In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.
Bardugo modeled her fantasy world after the Russian Empire of the early 1800s, rightfully identifying Tsarist Russia as a prime template for a fantasy setting based around darkness.

New to Me - June 2018
June 2018 was full of Musicals, due to the TCMusicals course! I am so excited to talk about all of the films I watched, but all these new Musicals were absolutely great for my soul!
1890s - 0
1900s - 0
1910s - 0
1920s - 3
The Broadway Melody (1929)
Tumblr media
It was really cool to see the first filmed musical! Of course, since sound was relatively new, there were some glitches in the audio. However, the story line made me so mad! Everything Hank did was for her sister, Queenie, and Queenie was a bit of a brat. I also don’t like how Eddie sees Queenie for the first time and then automatically falls in love with her, leaving Hank alone. Bessie Love’s Hank was the best character in the whole film and the only three-dimensional one.
The Love Parade (1929)
Tumblr media
As a feminist, I should be absolutely appalled by this movie. The storyline is about a queen whose husband becomes a sort of house husband and the ending is her showing him that she can be the submissive one, because men should be dominate. And that did bother me. BUT Maurice Chevalier is so charming as the husband, it is easy to overlook how obnoxious the storyline is!
There are some fun songs in this musical, but “Let’s Be Common” is my favorite song and performance.
youtube
Hallelujah (1929)
Tumblr media
I understand what King Vidor was trying to do when he made this film; he was trying to make a film showing black people’s experiences. However, because of the time period, this film has a lot of negative cultural stereotypes. Vidor was a white man who was trying his best to portray the black experience, and during the late ‘20s, it was very important for black people to see themselves on screen. In 2018, this film didn’t really age well but had some enjoyable songs anyways.
My favorite song and dance sequence was the “Swanee Shuffle” one performed by Nina Mae McKinney.
youtube
1930s - 0
1940s - 3
Moon Over Miami (1941)
Tumblr media
I had no clue this movie existed but when a lot of other TCMusical classmates were raving about it, I knew I had to watch it. Boy, was I glad I did! This was such a fun Musical and I was in love with colors and the costumes. The storyline was also one I highly enjoyed!
My favorite song is “You Started Something” because it is so fun and cute.
youtube
Cabin in the Sky (1943)
Tumblr media
Vincente Minnelli did a pretty good job with this film. It was fun to watch, but still had some racial stereotypes. It wasn’t as bad as Hallelujah, but they were still there. The stereotype of the harlot trying to steal the saintly wife’s husband was seen in this film, just as it was seen in Hallelujah. I really enjoyed the musical numbers and the dancing was so much fun!
My favorite song is “Taking a Chance on Love” by Ethel Waters. It’s such a sweet song!
youtube
Dear Ruth (1947)
Tumblr media
I was so in love with this film. The whole time I was like, GIRL, how do you not want William Holden? Especially since her boyfriend wasn’t anything special. The jokes in this movie were very clever and I also liked how when William Holden’s soldier figures out he has been swindled, he doesn’t feel anger and try to get back at his love interest. There was no masculinity complex, which was rare for this time period, especially for soldier characters!
1950s - 2
Brigadoon (1954)
Tumblr media
Honestly, this movie wasn’t my favorite. The colors were absolutely stunning, but I couldn’t really fall in love with anything else about this film. I really wanted to enjoy it, but unfortunately, I just couldn’t. Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly are always entertaining, but this musical was just lackluster to me.
I did enjoy the song, “Waitin’ For My Dearie” though. It was a very fun number to watch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNKtQjOtous
It’s Always Fair Weather (1955)
Tumblr media
I thought this storyline was weak, but it didn’t matter. I loved the musical numbers, the dancing, and the clever characters. I also liked the cynicism that the movie had towards TV and advertising. In the 50s, a lot of the films liked to be light and fluffy and this movie didn’t hold back on be biting.
My favorite dance sequence is Gene Kelly tap dancing on roller skates! It’s absolutely incredible!
youtube
1990s - 0
2000s - 1
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Tumblr media
I have no clue how I am just now watching this movie. I fell in love with it, because I understand Bridget way too well. The movie was, in her words, cheeky and having a love triangle with Hugh Grant and Colin Firth isn’t the worst thing to happen. This has now become one of my favorite chick flicks and probably one I will be revisiting quite a lot in the future.

FEMSLASH EX DEAR CREATOR LETTER
Hi creator! First of all, big thanks for writing for me. Please consider this letter guidelines and insight into what I like, but do not feel obligated to follow it. My dnws are all directly in my requests, and so long as you hold to those, the world is your oyster!
Generally, I love all things found family, character-driven pieces, slice of lifes, and I’m big on romance tropes, if you’re into that. Smut is happily accepted.
Here’s some of what I’d love to read for these fandoms and pairings specifically:
Harlots (spoilers for s2)
Violet/Amelia: I love these two to death. I love them just as the two of them, but I also love the bonds they’ve forged with other queer characters. It’s not a coincidence that Violet lives in Nancy’s house, and obviously Amelia’s connection with Rasselas is something that ends up informing the plot quite a bit. They’re in a tough spot right now, in the story. How do these found family connections help reveal (or cloud!) their love for each other?
Nancy/Margaret: Oh man, I called Nancy being a lesbian with some kind of history with Mags back in s1. Tell me about that history. They knew each other from a very young age. They escaped Quigley’s together. What happened between them?
Lady Caroline Howard/Charlotte: We haven’t seen Lady Howard since s1, but she provided some trenchant commentary on how limited women were at the time. Obviously she and George Howard weren’t sexually compatible. Maybe Charlotte would have had better luck.
BBC River
Chrissie/Stevie: One of the best and most devastating tricks the show pulls is surrounding us with River’s grief and then utterly blindsiding us with Chrissie’s. I think it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Chrissie was in love with her, too. Take that idea and go from there.
Chrissie/Rosa: Chrissie gets a fairly bleak ending, all things considered. It’s not set in stone that she’ll resign, but her life as she’s known it has collapsed. I hope that it’s all up from here. And I hope Rosa, even though they had so little shared screentime in canon (there’s a good amount of implied time, however!), is part of that.
XOver
Jenny Honey/Julie Hubble: Single moms of a magical kid support group turns romance? Magical mishap brings the moms together? Go nuts, creator.
13th Doctor/Susan Pevensie: I got no requests on this, except that you have a great time.
The Worst Witch
Hecate Hardbroom/Pippa Pentangle: There’s a lot of stories out there about how these two fess up to being in love both in the past and in the present and eventually getting together. Which I love! But there’s also thirty years of hurt between them, and even a confession or an explanation is not enough to make things totally right between them (as we saw when Pippa came back in s2!) What obstacles do they in encounter in trying to heal, what mistakes do they make? Also, some Mildred would not go amiss.
Julie Hubble/Dimity Drill: Hot Jock/Gorgeous Hippie + Magic, what’s not to love? Again, some Mildred would not go amiss.
Original Work
Mezzo-in-Pants/Soprano: If you picked this and are an opera dork, please indulge your opera dork. I’m a huge fucking nerd for all things opera and will def get your references. Other than that, have fun!
Teachers
Jenny/Susan: PLEASE SAVE THESE WOMEN FROM THEIR TERRIBLE MALE FRIENDS. PLEASE. Nina Sosanya and Raquel Cassidy leaving the show means these characters straight up disappeared together, so that’s definitely a place to start. They deserve so much better than the guys they hang around! Please write about them realizing that and triumphantly never talking to them again.
Thanks for writing for me! Have a blast, creator, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Video game Heroines: Less Cleavage, More Character
I am a straight man. I just want to get that out there. As such, I appreciate the feminine form, to put it diplomatically. That being said, I think that there is something severely fucked up with the way that woman are portrayed in video games.
Let’s back up a little bit. I have been playing video games since I was five. At first I didn’t really think much of the female characters beyond “how powerful are they in combat?” or “oh haha they did something silly again.” As I entered my dreaded puberty years, I noticed a few more things about the female characters.
I think, for video games at least, the starter culprits are Lara Croft and Tifa Lockhart. Now, I never played Tomb Raider, but you can bet your ass I knew who the main character was. She always brought her big guns to a fight. Which would be fine, excepts that she was intentionally overly sexualized. Can you honestly tell me what the character of Lara Croft is like? If I asked you to describe her, what could you tell me besides the fact that she has an abnormally sized rack?
Tifa Lockhart is the other example. She was actually a pretty decent fighter, and, if you look into her backstory, a deep character. But, sadly, all that is easily overseen by the fact that her tits are ridiculous, and that’s probably what most people remember her for. They don’t remember that she was a fragile, insecure child, who had to grow up with out a mother. They overlook the fact that she tried so hard to keep a strong appearance in the face of Cloud’s false memories. And even more, her strength and faith in her friends is what brought that emo baby of a main character back from self doubt and loathing. But no
people only remember two big things about her.
Well, I’m here, as a guy, to say that it really pisses me off that female characters nowadays have dwindled down to nothing more than huge titted, skippy clothes wearing, shallow harlots. Growing up, this is what I’m fed is supposed to be the norm for girls. Imagine my surprise when I get into my senior year of high school and the girls don’t have breasts the size of their heads, and wear clothes that actually cover their bodies (granted some of them didn’t do the later.)
I want to discuss some of my favorite female video game characters. The first is Heather from Silent Hill 3. There is so much to her character and development, that I can’t help but like her. She looks tired, with ratty hair. She wears bulky clothes, and she has a little bit of  a sharp tongue. She’s not perfect. At 17, she had only recently kicked her smoking habit. She has so many flaws, and even though she looks “flawed” (notice the quotation marks) I actually think that she’s one of the more attractive female video game characters of all time.
Some of my other favorites include Flonne from Disgaea, Luna from Lunar Silver Star Story, and Nina from Breath of Fire 3 (even though she appears in all of them). If you aren’t familiar with these characters, take a quick look on google images and you’ll see that they aren’t oversexualized at all. Instead, they are fun, unique, and strongly developed characters. Which, I feel, lends itself to a more rewarding gaming experience.
I want to use the Resident Evil series as an example here. The first game introduced two more of my favorite characters, Jill Valentine and Rebecca Chambers. In the first game in the series, they were very modest, yet still attractive women. As such, the gamer was able to step into the game, and not focus on the absurdity of their attire, but rather become immersed in a terrifying gaming experience.
Lets fast forward to Resident Evil 5. I remember reading an interview where one of the head developers mentioned that they wanted to make the characters sexier. Sheva is wearing revealing clothing. Excella Gionne is just a walking pair of tits, and even Jill, who was so loved, became a blonde bimbo in spandex. Honestly, this took away from the game so much. Resident Evil was supposed to be about scares, not super sexy women. As a result, Resident Evil 5 is by far the weakest game in the series.
Don’t get me wrong, it is perfectly acceptable to have sexy women in video games, if done tactfully. Let’s look at Devil May Cry for this example. Trish and Lady are both sexy characters, but not in an overbearing way, and it works. Lady in DMC 3 in particular, doesn’t go over the top, she shows a little bit of her legs because she wears a skirt, but doesn’t bring excess attention to her sexuality. As a result, she is a fun, yet still sexy character.
At the end of it all, I think that it’s almost insulting to see all these super busty, half naked women in video games. It’s basically suggesting that we, as men, see a good female character as nothing more than a pair of legs and over exposed cleavage. This is just not the case. For some characters, yes it works, but 99% of the time, it’s overdone. I want to care about a character, not have a face full of tits for the entire game. I can’t take that game seriously. I can’t take that character seriously, and it’s irritating as hell.
As I said before, I enjoy the female figure just fine, but when I play a game, it’s like reading a book or watching a movie. I want a well developed character with depth and personality. If it’s a part of the character, that’s fine. If a woman in a game uses her body as a way to manipulate people, that’s fine. But we don’t need every female character to wear a mini skirt and tube top. To top it all off, it just doesn’t make sense. Why would you want all that skin revealed if you’re going into battle, or fighting zombies.
As I said before, some of my favorite virtual ladies are flawed, imperfect women. And I like it that way. I want to like a character because they are a likable character, and not because they look easy. As I said, it’s frustrating and even a little bit insulting. I hope that game companies realize that their male clientele have grown up, and it’s time for them to do the same.

Shadow and Bone: Netflix Grishaverse Series Reveals Cast
https://ift.tt/2psDvdx
Netflix will be bringing Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone series to television with Bird Box writer Eric Heisserer as show runner.

Netflix has revealed the full cast for Shadow and Bone.

Little Birds on Sky Atlantic: Book, Cast, Filming Locations, Trailer
https://ift.tt/3jzs77a
It’s common for channels to make hyperbolic claims when introducing a new show, but when Sky’s drama heads describe Little Birds as ‘not like anything else on telly,’ they’re not wrong.
The six-part drama inspired by a series of erotic short stories is a lavish period melodrama with few points of TV comparison. Little Birds is an exploration of female sensuality and liberation set against a backdrop of colonial violence and simmering rebellion. It’s a provocative, heightened, almost cartoonish fairy tale about struggles for personal and political independence. It’s colourful and stylised, tongue-in-cheek yet earnest, with a killer 1950s soundtrack.
Take a look at the trailer:
If that appealed, then here’s everything you need to know:
Where was it filmed?
Little Birds was largely filmed in summer 2019 in the Spanish town of Tarifa, on the southernmost tip of Spanish Andalusia, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from its setting in the Moroccan city of Tangier, as well as further up the South-Eastern Spanish coast in Cadiz’s Algeciras.
Speaking at the Little Birds online press launch, actor Juno Temple describes standing on the Tarifan coast during filming and feeling the sensation of wind blowing across from Africa making her feel ‘like being in two places at once,’ a key theme in a series about conflicted identities and crossing boundaries.
The production team were denied permission to film the series in Morocco, a stumbling block they came to regard as a blessing in disguise when they discovered Tarifa, which they thought had a closer resemblance to 1950s Tangier than the actual city does in the modern day. The Sky Atlantic production employed the same Malaga-based locations scouting company as HBO’s Game of Thrones, which used several Andalusian locations for the kingdom of Dorne in the fantasy epic, including Seville’s Real Alcazar water gardens as the palace of the Dornish royal family.
Which book is it based on?
The short story collection Les Petits Oiseaux or Little Birds by French-Cuban writer Anaïs Nin. The collection of stories was published in 1979, after Nin’s death, but the stories were written as erotica-to-order decades earlier in 1940. The collection’s 13 stories are unrelated erotic vignettes featuring a variety of characters exploring sensuality and sex narrated largely from a female perspective, some of which provided inspiration for the series.
Little Birds producers Ruth McCance and Peter Carlton explain in this interview that the project initially began as a series of short films for Sky about sex, before Nin’s stories were brought in as a unifying thread and screenwriter Sophia Al-Maria built characters and plots around them, and suggested setting them against the backdrop of Tangier, Morocco on the cusp of independence from colonial France.
Who wrote and directed it?
The series was written by Qatari-American artist writer and filmmaker Sophia Al-Maria, author of 2012 memoir The Girl Who Fell to Earth. All six episodes were directed by Tales of the City, American Gods, Dickinson and Transparent’s Stacie Passon, with cinematography by Vanity Fair and Victoria’s Ed Rutherford. It was produced by the UK’s Warp Films.
What was the political situation in Tangier in 1955?
In 1955, Morocco was one year away from independence from colonial rule. In the 1920s, the city of Tangier had been officially made an ‘international zone’ under the French and Spanish Protectorate as part of the joint colonial regime of France, Spain and the United Kingdom.
After calling for Moroccan independence from the oppressive colonial regime, the Sultan of Morocco, Mohammed V, was forced into exile in Corsica in 1953 by the French army. Many of the Moroccan nationalists in Little Birds are his supporters and wish him to return to power and fight for independence from the colonial forces, while French Secretary Vaney and his army seek to quell the nationalists and maintain colonial rule.

Who are the characters and what have you seen them in before?
Juno Temple plays Lucy Savage, an American heiress to a firearms fortune who travels from her parents’ Park Lane apartment in New York City to Tangier to marry a down-on-his-luck English lord. Temple recently appeared in true crime series Dirty John, Sky and HBO 1970s music drama Vinyl and plays fairy Thistletwit in Disney’s Maleficent films.
Yumna Marwan plays Cherifa, an independent and wilful Moroccan dominatrix who works at a local brothel and resents the French colonial regime. Little Birds is Lebanon-born actor-director Marwan’s English-language screen debut.
Hugh Skinner plays Hugo Cavendish-Smyth, an English nobleman struggling with social shame over his sexual identity, and in need of money. Skinner has appeared in Fleabag, W1A, The Windsors, Harlots and the Mamma Mia films.
Raphael Acloque plays Adham Abaza, an Egyptian prince frustrated that his closeted English lover refuses to commit to their relationship, and marries a woman. Acloque has previously appeared in Spiral, Catherine the Great and 24: Legacy.
Nina Sosanya plays Lili Von X, a scandalous American celebrity who comes to Tangier to make a film too sexually risqué for the United States. Sosanya is British star with recent appearances in Good Omens, Staged, His Dark Materials, Killing Eve as well as Last Tango in Halifax, WIA and much more.
Jean-Marc Barr plays French Secretary Vaney, a symbol of European colonial oppression. Barr has appeared in a great many French and English-language films and television dramas, and is perhaps best known for Luc Besson’s free-diving sports film Le Grand Bleu or The Big Blue.
Rossy de Palma plays aristocratic hedonist Contessa Mandrax. The Spanish actor-model has appeared in several films by, and is considered a muse for auteur Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.
Is there going to be a second series?
Speaking at the Little Birds July press launch, the team were hopeful about a second series order, but it was too early to say.
Little Birds starts at 9pm on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday the 4th of August.
