I've completely skimmed over the overarching logic of burning the bodies in Trunswick every time I've read this book. Yeah, what was going on with the politics there? The earl just suddenly decided to go after bonding sickness, or just suddenly execute the people who'd been held in the Howling House for ages?

Ana's connections: yeah, would have been great to know what was up with that. Another option, besides being a relative of the Prime Minister, was that Ana's family was a group of Conqueror loyalists outside Stetriol. That'd be an incredibly valuable resource for Stetriol, and this 'important position' for Ana might be a reward for their loyalty. That'd be fascinating if that was the case.

I liked that Zerif's four "false heroes" didn't quite match up with the main four continents. Felt a little messier and more real. Also the implications would be tough for Meilin: Zhong is considered so firmly occupied at this point that there's no point playing games to make the population feel more positively towards the Conquerors.

Yeah, was Abeke's kidnapping just opportunity ('she's seen us, can't have her go back to the others') or more of a psychological tactic to foster more distrust ('knew we couldn't trust her, look she's run away')? We know the Conquerors like those fostering-distrust tactics.

Rereading Hunted

I'm doing my first reread of Spirit Animals in years, in preparation for starting my rewrite and the final fourth arc, and to my delight I'm discovering a lot of things that went over my head as a younger reader. I finished Hunted today, and wanted to talk about some of the more interesting things I noticed -- character details, plot holes and creepy implications. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book so much, but I've found it tickled my brain just the right way.

So, here are some highlights from my reread -- stuff even I didn't pick up on before.

Please mind the tags as there is a brief mention of rape near the bottom of this post.

Conor looks to be strawberry-blonde on this cover, not golden-blonde as he's described in text. I feel like it suits him.

The war has actually been going on for a while, probably since well before Wild Born. Finn was fighting Conquerors when his brothers were massacred, and it's unlikely that event was recent enough to have taken place during Wild Born. There is also a moment in the first book when General Teng speculates that the Conquerors who are laying siege to Jano Rion entered the city over a period of years in order to avoid suspicion. It would be interesting if the authors tied this in more efficiently, and our protagonists had been living in an active war when they summoned the Four Fallen. This opens up a plot hole, though: the Conquerors operate under Shane, and because Shane is 13 when he mobilizes his people for war in The Book of Shane, the events of the main series must have started quite soon after this. Abeke mentions he's only a little older than she is in Wild Born; since Shane is already 13, he couldn't have been waging war for a few years before this.

The only background I could find for Kunaya's name is that it is of Zimbabwe origin and means "rain". Notice the connection? Abeke is a Rain Dancer.

Rollan mentions that his father is dead, in a way that suggests he knew him. This seems to have been retconned in Fire and Ice, as his father plays no part in Aidana's retelling of their past as a family. Indeed, he is never brought up again after this instance in Hunted.

The Earl of Trunswick was burning bodies. Our protagonists notice something off about the bonfire burning outside Trunswick, with Abeke and Meilin specifically noting its unpleasant smell. And most tellingly, when Conor and Rollan are captured, the Earl tells his soldiers to "burn the body with the rest" if Conor does not put Briggan into passive state. Who exactly the Earl was burning is not entirely clear, but a possible clue comes from a later chapter where he threatens Finn after the breakout from the Howling House. "Don't worry, Finn Cooley! We'll burn that troubled bond out of you yet!" he says. I'm inclined to believe the Earl was burning the bodies of spirit animals with the bonding sickness -- in a twisted attempt to cure their human companions, or merely to torture them further. It's possible he was burning human corpses too; Isilla the Greencloak is mentioned to have been killed, and I get the sense he wouldn't have treated her body with respect. In any case, this is a crazy thing to heavily imply and then never fully explain.

Tahlia is noticeably older than the other three kids. She even takes offense to being referred to as a child by Zerif. (In my rewrite, with the other three being around 13, I think I would place her at 18.)

Tahlia's entire existence doesn't make much sense -- she's supposed to be bonded to the Stetriolan legend of the water-holding frog, but this legend isn't even mentioned in the third arc when our protagonists go scouting for these same legends' bond tokens. Instead, it is replaced by Zhong's water dragon. Additionally, why would Stetriol even need a hero to inspire them? They already have Shane. They're the birthplace of the Conquerors -- what more inspiration do they need? It would make more sense if Tahlia was Zhongese and bonded to a water dragon, like Song's Seaspray. After all, if any nation needed someone to sway them to the Conquerors' side, it would be the fallen Zhong.

Ana, the Amayan girl with the Gila monster, was chosen to be a part of the False Four for her "exceeding connections". This makes me wonder if she was intended to be related or otherwise close to the Prime Minister of Amaya. It's never revealed what Zerif meant by this and Ana presumably dies in Fire and Ice.

The False Four in general are a really interesting (and promising) concept and I wish more was done with them. I wanted to see them rallying the four nations to the Conquerors' side and creating more of a threat to the Greencloaks! I wanted to see each of them directly paralleling the True Four! Instead, they all ended up incarcerated, insane or dead by the fourth book. Ah well. That's what my rewrite is for.

The absence of Lady MacDonnell is noted, but never explained. Interestingly, Rollan notices this in the same breath as he does Lord MacDonnell's children being so rigidly obedient. Considering Lord MacDonnell's character, I'm willing to bet he had his wife executed or otherwise removed for some transgression she made. After all, one of the Three Undeniable Truths is "death".

Lord MacDonnell is a really terrible guy. Despite aiding our protagonists in this book and The Evertree, he is a nasty person who keeps his own people in a permanent state of fear. This book is full of despicable characters, for sure.

What were Devin and Karmo intending to do with Abeke? And why her? Because of her connection to the Conquerors, I'm guessing. But it's never really explained. They tell her they're taking her back to Nilo, but there's no way they would just kindly take her home and let her go. Maybe the Conquerors planned to give her the Bile and then use her in some scheme. I wish this book wasn't so vague (but I also don't because it gives me more freedom as a writer).

Devin calls Abeke "vermin" in the final battle. Interestingly, Karmo doesn't seem to approve of this comment. In fact, Karmo is a lot more sympathetic than I remembered.

This is the only first arc book that Shane doesn't appear in, and for no apparent reason. I think it would have been a good choice to include him and plan to in my rewrite.

Finn has PTSD. Poor guy. I kind of like that he didn't return to Greenhaven at the end and instead stayed in Glengavin -- after all, it was the Greencloaks and their talk of destiny that led to Finn's brothers being killed, Donn retreating and Finn being so deeply scarred.

The Earl seems to threaten Conor's mother with rape in the foreboding letter he sends. I've seen several people discuss this. He tells Conor his family will starve if he doesn't hand over the Iron Boar, "and the fate of your mother will be far crueller". It's a chilling implication, and certainly a choice to include in a children's book.

Overall, Hunted is dark. For that reason, it's become one of my favourite books in the series. Beautiful cover, great writing, cool new guy introduced, failure for our protagonists and an epic cliffhanger. This one is a gem.

thalia/shri’iia in my oc setting (not in bg3) are soulmates in a sense that in every universe they’re always bound to meet or come across each other. sometimes they form a relationship sometimes they don’t but the point is they will always cross paths…!!!!!! and if a relationship is formed, thalia’s heart will always break bc of shri’iia and it’s either an intentional or unintentional thing. the heartbreak can be both major or minor too - it could be like a soul wrenching thing or just a small accident, either way, that’s like the two things that will always happen.

They would find Pride/Humility to be the most interesting, I would say. Admiring those who represent this particular vice/virtue so effortlessly as they find it to be so unlike themselves. A trait that Nicholas/Nicolette wishes they too possessed.

They would also find Wrath/Patience to be extremely disturbing, this is because Nicholas/Nicolette has had to suffer through the living nightmare of others' wrath. Which is why they do well to keep their own temper in check, knowing how the fiery pits of one's anger can burn more than just bridges.

They wouldn't really find any of the vices/virtues interesting, to be honest. However, Pride/Humility would be the most...familiar of them all outside of their own vice/virtue 👀

Particularly in relation to their childhood and general upbringing, Tobias/Tahlia finds extremely prideful individuals to be entertaining and enjoys making a mockery of them any chance they get.

Now, in terms of what they would find most "alarming," it would have to be Lust/Chastity. This is because Tobias/Tahlia finds "loose" people to be an eyesore. Especially the desperate kind as they find that kind of behaviour to be distasteful. As well as the willingness to sleep around on a whim to be extremely idiotic and unhygienic.

They would find Wrath/Patience to be the most "interesting," as they find the raw emotion that pours out of individuals who represent this particular vice/virtue to be entertaining and so out of their own character. Elias/Elize has a fondness for passionate individuals, fiery in spirit as opposed to their own usual indifference.

In terms of alarming behaviour... I would say Elias/Elize would raise an eyebrow at Gluttony/Temperance. This is because a lack of self-control concerns Elias/Elize to a certain degree, because they've unfortunately had to witness firsthand, as a child no less how a lack of restraint and overindulgence of things can distract others from the harsh and necessary realities of life.

They would find Envy/Kindness to be the most interesting because of how confusing it is to them. This is because Kacey always tries to see the best in people and constantly goes out of their way to make everyone feel special. Which is one of the many reasons why Kacey is so popular, but also why they can't seem to understand how people could hate themselves for the same traits that they find to be precious in a person.

Sloth/Diligence would be the most alarming for Kacey. This is because they know how individuals who represent this vice/virtue can become so disconnected with everything going on around them...with life itself. A dark, knowing thought that unnerves them, because of this, Kacey always desperately tries to pay close attention to those who represent the Sloth/Diligence trait in particular.

Ultimate: Dance Battle - similar to Iso’s ult, but Olive’s technicolour disorients the enemy through a clone like Yoru, shoot the wrong clone? Creates a flash that stuns for a few seconds.

INTERVIEW - HARVEY:

What was your first reaction to the collaboration offered to you by RIOT?

it was very shocking! Actually, one of the members that we collaborated was someone close to me, and to be able to work with her despite not being in the same group anymore, was very exciting.

What should we expect out of your character?

I think she’s a very challenging character to play against, and I also think a lot of people would enjoy her. I certainly did, collaborating with the riot developers into creating her!

Favourite agent besides Olive?

Astra! If not for Aohi, I would have no idea what to do in Valorant, and I’ve been enjoying playing controller a lot!

How was the collaboration with Enhypen’s female members and Natty?

It was very… how to say? Nostalgic? Natural? The girls reminded me a lot of the XG members, and they were a joy to talk to, and to miss Aohi, is definitely is an understatement.

Natty’s character, Ty, is a street performer turned radiant through a car accident involving a radianite truck and her friend’s. She’s recovers with the help of Sage and Omen, figuring out her discovered powers under the supervision of Brimstone.

Type: Sentinel.

E Ability: Thermal Wave - sends out a heat wave to a part of site, the enemy’s body heat returning back to Ty for information.

Q Ability: Heat Packs - works like Chamber’s Trademark, marking any flanking enemies with a burn after effect.

C Ability: Volcanic Shield - works like a Harbour wall, pushing through the wall deals damage as long as you’re inside said wall.

Ultimate: Floor’s Lava - places a heated area that deals damage to any enemy that walks in, useful for holding site. Has the same time frame as a Killjoy ultimate.

INTERVIEW - NATTY:

What was your first reaction to the collaboration offered to you by RIOT?

It was new, that’s for certain! I was nervous for the most part because it was my first collaboration, and it was of Xiulin and Aohi of ENHYPEN as well, and I wanted to make a good impression!

What should we expect out of your character?

I hope that community enjoys my character’s voice lines as much as I did recording them, she’s upbeat and always grooving to her team’s flow, and I think I made her as fun as she could be.

Favourite agent besides Ty?

Definitely Clove! Their character design is very electric, and I have the most fun playing her against so many agents. Other than Clove, Skye is also one of my favourites! Her abilities are just as cool as Clove’s.

How was the collaboration with Enhypen’s female members and Harvey?

They’re an amazing bunch, these girls are one of the most coolest and chillest people I’ve ever met, we’ve all exchanged albums and to just see these talented people in person and be able to work with them is a blessing.

Best Valorant player between you and the girls?

I’d have to agree with Harvey, and say it’s Aohi.

Biography: A weapon made by her parents, Bao’s ability to take the site is dangerous, intimidating her enemies and letting her teammates take with no problem. This mafia’s princess is deadly, and she always bites.

ABILITIES:

Bao’s from an underground family of mafia from Fuzhou, her parents had conceived her to be placed into a secret experiment with Radianite, and she’s recovered in a mission by Iso and Gekko, and is now under viper’s care as she tries to stablize Bao’s radianite exposure.

Type: Duelist.

E Ability: Vile Exhaust - deploys a smoked flash, both blinding and sending enemies with a small twinge of decay for ten seconds.

Q Ability: Frame Jump - sort of teleport that happens at short distances, can be used to teleport or fake like a Yoru clone, taking advantage of enemy’s surroundings.

C Ability: Alternative - Bao is able to pick a certain enemy to switch places with, using her power to portal through and make a flank inside the enemy’s team.

Ultimate: Turning Tables - Bao controls the closest enemy in her vicinity while her real body is stationed like Gekko’s ult, using the enemy as her puppet. Ultimate ends if fifteen seconds pass, her body is shot down, or if her puppet is shot by the enemy team.

INTERVIEW - XIULIN:

What was your first reaction to the collaboration offered to you by RIOT?

I was pretty chill with it, it’s really Batsy (Aohi) who enjoys Valorant, don’t get me wrong though I do enjoy gaming, but Aohi squealed more than I did, haha.

What should we expect out of your character?

I hope that people will be challenged a little more to be perceptive and have faster reflexes, it was a challenge for me and I’m ascendant ranked! Other than that, I hope the community does end up enjoying Bao.

Favourite agent besides Bao?

Sage! Honestly I’ve gotten used to her voice lines and Aohi’s always pocketing me when it comes to our games, so she’s grown on me! I’d also say Reyna as well, her voice lines are insane and I play her best.

How was the collaboration with Natty of KIOF and Harvey of XG?

Harvey’s one of Aohi’s old group mates, and I obviously have to treat her with the utmost respect for taking care of Aohi for so long. With Natty, Aohi and I admire her lots, especially with KIOF and their music, they’re just amazing.

Best Valorant player between you and the girls?

Me. No, I’m kidding, it’s Aohi and I, but her more— she’s hit radiant before and she probably will again.

Real Name: Etsuko Nakamura.

Age: Mid-20s.

Best Weapon: Operator/Phantom.

Biography: An invisible agent, who’s taught by the best. Elytra’s easily able to take advantage of the enemy team, always one step ahead. Elytra is Cypher’s and Killjoy’s successor, ultimately creating an absolute weapon on the field.

ABILITIES:

Elytra’s ties with the radiants stem from being a rescue and a run away. The radiant program sent her for a long while’s training and Elytra didn’t want to be turned into an agent for reasons only Cypher seemed to know.

She’s now under Cypher’s and Killjoy’s wings, being protected under heaps and heaps of hacking courtesy of the engineers.

Type: Sentinel.

E Ability: Bio-Hack - Like Cypher, Elytra places a cam around the map and is able to register a small bio-hack that reveals an enemy.

Q Ability: Fever Dream - Is a type of Hacked wall placed down like a Sage wall, it needs either a full 25 bullets to shoot down, or it must be walked through but disables abilities for five seconds.

C Ability: Angel’s breath - A sort of orb that Elytra can throw to the enemy team, giving them sleep which hazes their vision and gives them slowness.

Ultimate: Serenity - works like a brim ult, but it’s a moving target ult, three is able to shoot down and only Elytra could walk through said ultimate.

INTERVIEW - AOHI:

What was your first reaction to the collaboration offered to you by RIOT?

What else but excitement and joy? No, but really, I was jumping around me and Xiu-eonnie's room for like hours, and the boys probably listened to me yap about the Collaboration forever. Safe to say, they now have an idea of how much of a chronic gamer I am.

What should we expect out of your character?

Nothing but difficulty, I thought long and hard about Elytra's powers and it took some trial and error to make sure she wasn't too weak or overpowered. When you've mastered her, she's definitely a fun character to play with, and with a team who can utilize her abilities? It's an easy climb from there!

Favourite agent besides Elytra?

Sage and Jett! Obviously they're kind of basic, but they're who I started with, and it's difficult to just throw them out! I climbed most of my radiant journey with Sage and Jett, and I don't think I would be an absolute pro if not for these two characters!

How was the collaboration with Natty of KIOF and Harvey of XG?

...It was emotional for me, for sure. It's been a while since I've seen Harvey-nee, and she's always been considered as one of the closest people in my life. With Natty-eonnie, she was absolutely excited to gain a new dongsaeng, that's for sure! She couldn't leave my side, and honestly, after spending so much time around her, I don't think I could leave her side either!

Best Valorant player between you and the girls?

I think it's pretty obvious! It's me.
