So.....I finally made it to Shadowbringers, and encountered Vauthry for the first time. This was my reaction, and the only one I feel is both appropo and justified:

One he's not the main character too he was introduced to us as a thoughtless a****** who was trying to get a girl who could not possibly return his affections to love him especially in the context of a budding lgbt relationship

And finally in the run up to this confrontation everything was done in order to frame him as a thoughtless emotionally UN available dipshit who was chasing a woman outside of his race and interest and reciprocation or any possible real knowledge of him of herWhile snodding on the women who were serving him to a nice suicidal degree

It's only in the actual confrontation chapter that slowly in the edges you start to realize wait a second the girl who's been constantly hugging him who he's been acting like a Dick too with complete indifference isn't his girlfriend or a Beyoncé but in fact he's a nanny who's raised him for a long period of time which in and of itself is going to recontextualize why he's been all stiff it's understandable if he's doing this grand romantic gesture he's a little put out having his mom baby him

Then we find out More of his actual personality Then we Find out that he hasn't actually been spoken by his actual name by the Party meaning that the guys who called him an idiot were being Really dumb

Finally in the midst of the big yes this is sign that lios is in fact really autistic we get strong hands that no he didn't just randomly proposed to some white chick who he liked without actually getting to know her he was in fact trying to pursue her and ways that would seem obvious if we'd seen them but did not stand out in lios's mind

By the very nature of this it makes us requestion everything we've heard from lyos and the party while at the same time toshiro's declaration that he hates him and doesn't think of him as a friend

Finally there's the fact that audiences do not like being presented with false information it's wiped with villains or it was all just a dream and other such things really p***** them off you're effectively telling them that what they're watching isn't real and you can change the information at any time which is going to really mess with their investment and feel as if they're being lied to just to get off the author's sense of cleverness

Even though toshiro does end tmeeting on somewhat friendly terms the relationship that we wanted to have back is never going to happen because it never existed so there's that too

Finally there's the ship war stuff and there's just no way to unattach this you're having the much anticipated and low that I am to give it any credit to rabbit shippers with a complex any credit yes there is a large ongoing tendency to tease or for the possibility of interesting chemistry between 2 characters of the same-sex agenda or a queer interpretation to get enough play say on a Meta level or some subtext and then toss it out the moment it's time for endgame

And the thing is this isn't just crazy rabbit shippers people that I respect like David Prokepyz(?) on tumblr Have to go into these elaborate things about how the relationship in point of toshiro is to be a social commentary against strictness in the mainstream or how Fallon and Marcel can't just be friends

Toshiro is hated because he's very much the equivalent of the standard straight white guy even though he's technically not those thingsComing in and getting all the things and it's not like the series itself doesn't know that it's playing to these tender wounds and the audience with the examples of his own brothers and a lot of the stuff that we can textualize is in being stuffed that happens after the fact or on the outside without contacts that were given because we start to realize we've been seeing it through a very let's say distorted Lens thanks to our characters
