Guilt had been an ever present lover in Caelum’s bed. It draped over him at night, coddling him like a child, rocking him to sleep with the names of the men he had been directly responsible in killing. Sometimes it would even press its mouth to his, smothering him with with their faces, their pleading eyes--the last words that escaped their mouths before blood spilled from their skin. And then they were gone, and he was in blackness, falling, falling. Gone.

He knew something was wrong. He could hear the gunshots and the screams. Horror, fear, usually he fed on it and made it his master. But not tonight. Tonight was his usual trip to the bar. The one he looked forward to at the end of each week. At first for the drink, and later for the company. Her company. Caelum walked, straight backed, hands on his weapon, his men at his side. None of which could quell the rising fear that was stuck in his throat like a pained moan. This city wasn’t safe. It never had been. And as his family had placed a choke hold on it, the quality of life had decreased. No one should have moved here. Least of all the blonde with the smile that made it seem as if the sun might have actually shined down here.

Once his hand hit the door of the bar, he knew his quiet terror was not misplaced. Turning the knob he could feel the emptiness greet him. “Both of you search the place,” Caelum ordered, not bothering to turn to face his men as he watched them take their guns out and turn the corner. The place was a war zone. Tables overturned, glass shattered, and the irony smell of blood pierced the air like a bullet.

It was a war. His war. And now it had come to the city at last.

“Anything?” He called out, voice ringing in the silence that had only been filled by the crunching of glass and the sharp intakes of breaths.

Caelum took his gun out and made his way to behing the bar, keeping his hands as steady as he could as he willed his powers into focus. Not every myth about the feared Hades was incorrect. He was born into the darkness, and he could see through every inch of it. Every detail was seen, and he knew there was a struggle that had happened back here. Someone had won, and someone had lost. Then, out of nowhere, he heard a choked out cry of someone who had been attempting to hide their pain. To hide themselves. 

He turned quickly, gun pointing, face smooth--and there she was. Persephone. Her hands were over her mouth as she tried to control her breathing, and he saw the blood slowly spilling from her abdomen. Not to mention the cuts on her hands, which he knew was proof that she didn’t take anything laying down. She had fought back, and this was the price she had to pay.

“Persephone,” Caelum said quietly, hoping not to disturb any would be attacker that might still be lingering. “It’s me, it’s me, you’re safe.”

Caelum was struck by how untrue his words were. She would never be safe so long as he was around her. His entire life was dangerous, and unstable. He killed people for a living and not a single person blinked an eye. Power, the thirst for it and the pursuit of it were always a threat to take him completely. To drown him and intoxicate him until the sliver of humanity he had left disappeared into the void.

The closer he moved towards her, the worse the wounds became. Glass was protruding from her stomach as her body shook with pain, and fear, and uncertainty. Caelum knew she couldn’t see him properly, that where she could grow life, he could take it away. “I’m going to keep you safe,” he said, possessive and angry. “I’m going to take care of you.” He placed a hand on her wound and felt the warm blood spill onto him. Gun forgotten, job ignored, he knew there was only one thing in the world he wanted to do just then. To make sure she made it out of this damned city alive.

In Caelum’s eyes, Tessa is the person he wishes he could be. She is the quintessential human being, the person that everyone else should strive to be like. She’s a combination of kindness, sarcasm, and a softness that cannot be comparable to anything else in his world. Not having her in his life, for him, is a fate far worse than death, because she’s a part of him. There’s a very large chunk of his heart dedicated simply to her, which was there long before they ever realize there was more than friendship on their minds. He loves her. He loves her so much that he can no longer see a single flaw when it comes to her, even though he accepted that she had them from the moment they were kids. Caelum knows Tessa isn’t perfect, but he knows that she tries so damn hard to be perfect. The perfect daughter. The perfect employee. The perfect friend, and girlfriend. That alone makes Caelum fall in love with her every time he opens his eyes and realizes she still exists in the world. There is no Caelum without Tessa, and there is no true definition of love if he can’t touch her hand, or see the corners of her mouth quirk upwards, or see the red flush into her cheeks any time he teases her.

☾ - sleep headcanon

While Caelum is most often the big spoon, and Tessa the little spoon, more often than not they sleep face to face, arms wrapped around one another, bodies crammed together so as to leave as little space between them as possible. For some, the position isn’t exactly ideal, but for Tessa and Caelum, there isn’t much else better than waking up to one another’s face, and knowing that they’d be able to survive another day.

The first time Tessa and Caelum officially told Caelum’s family that they were dating, no one blinked an eye, or even managed to look surprised. All of them, Carina included, as well as Hermione and Ron, simply rolled their eyes in exasperation. Then, after money was finished being exchanged between persons, Scorpius, surprisingly, making out the best, his family managed out a congratulations before asking when the wedding day was. A year after that Tessa and Caelum were married, and this time they at least got a few tears.

early morning, still drowsy, eyes half open, limbs still sleeping, hearts quietly pumping, clothes still off from the night before. fingers gently grazing skin, smooth kisses on the neck, legs rubbing against legs, arms entangling torsos.

While they aren’t above trying new things, it’s the gentle early morning sun peering through curtains sex that they look forward to the most. It encompasses them as a couple. Always building one another up, never tearing apart. They aren’t angry, not with one another, and while there is always passion, it’s never destructive.

Trips with family friends was a common occurrence in the Bones and Malfoy family. Ever since he can remember, Caelum remembers Tessa. More specifically, she remembers that he was the one with enough patience to teach him how to swim. Caelum would deny it, but the ocean terrified him, and the idea that he’d be spending an entire week by the ocean made his six year old self more than a little nervous. Tessa, however, knew how he was feeling, she almost always did. And while the rest of the family was loudly splashing one another among the waves, Tessa was coaxing him to put his feet in the water. Then his ankles. Shins. Knees. Thighs. When he finally hit his stomach he almost panicked. Even as a child he hated being out of control, but Tessa grabbed his hand in her own, and dragged him out to sea.

One kiss is never the same as the next. They are each unique in composition, execution, and motivation. Some can be sad, some angry, others loving and comfortable. Never has a kiss been copied in the exact same manner, at least, not real kisses. With scripts kisses can be performed one after another with the same motivation in mind, and, after enough practice, with the same amount of tongue and enthusiasm. 

The kiss Tessa gave Caelum, the morning after their wedding night, was just as unique as could be expected. The real trick was, Caelum wasn’t even awake to fully experience it, to respond back, to pull her down and relish in the fact that they were no each other’s. No more will they, or won’t they. No more worrying about love, and its potential negative attributes. They had both jumped, fallen, and swam. They were lost in each other, but it was the best kind of lost. It was all encompassing, beautiful, pure, and best of all, it was with their best friend.

Even if Caelum wasn’t awake his mind could still feel that something different was happening. His eyes fluttered underneath his eyelids, the movement enough to let Tessa know that her kiss was indeed appreciated. But none of her attentions were received with so little enthusiasm, at least, internally.

On the inside Caelum had already responded. His hands had curled gently around her hair, and blue eyes shone with more than just a little delight. They were married. Forever. There was nothing as secure as that, as the kiss that gently said, “No more running.” Because that was what he did. He ran. From feelings, from the possibility of being hurt, and from the possibility of hurting others. Most of his life had been spent trying to tread lightly, to make as few waves as possible, and what good had that done? His life would turn upside down and right side up in a matter of moments but Tessa and her kisses were always a constant, and if not her kisses then her companionship.

Finally he woke up, long after her lips had touched his, and yet the kiss lingered, and so did the smile on his face.
