Chapter Eighteen

Prompt: You’re the most important thing to EXO, you’ve been with them for years, and when you wind up missing, it greatly upsets them. Their journey to find you and bring you home starts a chain of events that leads to facing their own greatest fears, making unlikely allies, traveling to other worlds again and finally gathering the strength to take down their greatest enemy. Along the way you get to see their true colors and fall in love all over again, although you might come to realize you don’t like what you see in the mirror.

“She knows she’s home.”

Suho and Chanyeol were still processing what they had just discovered, but the others needed to know as well. There wasn’t much to explain, but everyone agreed that you needed space. No one was happy about the situation, but they also had another pressing matter at hand. All the preparations were complete, so now they just needed the start. Lay was in the water, Jooheon and Shownu having been the ones to volunteer and get in with him. Of course the difficult part was getting Kihyun into the in-between. There was no real certain way to do so, meaning the only option was for Kai to teleport with them.

It was something rather quick, and then Kai was in the water with Kihyun. He passed him over to Lay who gently fed him an elixir. Jooheon and Shownu both drank the same thing, laying back in the water and closing their eyes. The others could only watch on in silence. There was tension now between both groups. Besides the revelation of what had happened to Kihyun, there was now your past and disappearance. Still, the priority was Kihyun, so all they could do was hope for the best.

To close your eyes and open them again to endless darkness was quite frightening. The fear was present only for a moment before Jooheon realized he wasn’t alone. Next to him was Shownu and Lay.

“Where are we?”

“The in-between.” Lay explained. “An endless void.”

“So Kihyun is here somewhere?” Shownu asked.

“In theory, but there’s no guarantee.”

“How do we find him?”

“You both have to seek him out. If he’s here, he’ll let you find him.”

“But where?”

“I don’t know. This place creates hell for those that get stuck, I can’t imagine where he’d be.”

“So, it’s up to us.” Jooheon confirmed. “What exactly do we do if we find him?”

“If you find you need to bring him back here, and together we can leave.”

“That’s it?”

“It might sound easy, but it’s not. Trust your gut, and good luck.”

“Thanks.”

For the sake of staying together Jooheon and Shownu remained close, walking in the darkness. Neither knew when Lay had disappeared, but it was just the two of them now. They kept walking aimlessly until they heard a loud crash noise and were blinded by a strong white light. When they regained their vision they found themselves on an abandoned road. Shownu had no idea where he was, but Jooheon recognized the place immediately.

“Kihyun…”

Jooheon soon found Kihyun running down the road, chasing down the car before it crashed. As much as he wanted to change things, he knew it wasn’t possible. At least not here.

“Kihyun!”

Jooheon chased after his friend, and soon Shownu was aware of what was going on. The two followed after the other until the car crashed and he stopped. 

“Kihyun, please.” Jooheon begged. “You have to let go.”

It didn’t seem that Kihyun was listening, and soon enough the car reappeared on the road and drove past the trio. Kihyun chased after it again, and the two followed. Shownu managed to catch up and hold Kihyun back.

“Let go! I have to-”

“I’m right here.” Jooheon grabbed Kihyun. “I’m right here, I’m okay.”

“Jooheon?”

“Yeah, yeah it’s me.”

“You’re alive.”

“Yes, yes I am, and so are you.”

“Huh?”

“You can let go. We’re both okay.”

They all heard the car crash again and looked over. Kihyun stared at the scene before him, gripping Jooheon’s arms tightly.

“Let’s go home.” Jooheon said. “Together.”

There wasn’t much they could do but walk away from the crash. Eventually everything faded to black and they were walking in a void. When Lay had appeared he called out to them. Kihyun was so excited to see such an old friend, but the reunion would have to wait a moment. They all held hands and closed their eyes, placing their trust into Lay.

When Jooheon opened his eyes he gasped, getting his feet under him. He could see that Lay was awake, and so was Shownu, although Kihyun was still unconscious. Before he could ask anything Kihyun opened his eyes, taking in a deep breath.

“Kihyun!”

All the others jumped into the water to greet their brother, overjoyed to see him alive. While everyone was caught up with that, Baekhyun snuck away from the scene, wanting to look for you. It wasn’t long before he found you locked up in one of the rooms, he knocked, but he already knew your answer.

“Go away.”

“Y/n, please let me explain.”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

Baekhyun couldn’t understand much, but he knew he had hurt you. He sat down, leaning against your door. Even if you didn’t want to hear it he had to be honest.

“I’m sorry… there’s so much we should have told you before, but we just didn’t know how.” Baekhyun sighed. “We called this planet, this place, home for a very long time. Everything was good and we didn’t notice RF’s presence growing until it was too late. They captured us, and we were their prisoners for months… perhaps longer… when we finally escaped we weren’t in good condition, and somehow wound up at your place. Even though we were complete strangers you were so kind to us and helped us without question. Of course it wasn’t long before RF tracked us down. We knew we couldn’t just leave you for RF to find, so we took you with us.”

“… but why did you make me forget?” “It’s not like we could bring you home anytime soon…”

“Were you ever gonna tell me?”

“Honestly… I’m not sure. We had no idea you were close to Wonho and the others.”

“I don’t remember them… can I recover those memories?”

“You’d have to ask Lay, but those memories are buried deep… do you hate us?”

“I don’t know…”

At that moment Wonho came over. He was still a bit wet, but he wanted to talk to you. Baekhyun stood up as he came to the door, knocking and letting you know it was him. To Baekhyun’s jealousy you opened the door a bit.

“Hi.”

“Hey, do you think you could come out for a bit, so we can talk.”

You carefully opened the door and stepped out. Wonho gave you a smile, putting you at ease. Although you couldn’t look over at Baekhyun.

“Why are you wet?”

“We woke up Kihyun.”

“You did!? That’s great news.”

“Yeah. The others are examining him to make sure everything is good, but I wanted to check in with you. How are you?”

“I’m not sure… everything is fine but I don’t know who I am anymore… I’m not sure I ever did…”

“I’m glad you’re alive.”

“What was my life like?”

“You were incredible, very intelligent, had a nice job and your own place. Although I do need to apologize for something.”

“For what?”

“I, and the rest of my brothers, disappeared without a word. We made you worry so much, and then when we came back we couldn’t give you an explanation.”

“What happened?”

“It’s a long story. Why don’t we step out for a bit.”

“Sure.”

Baekhyun wanted to protest about you leaving the house, but he knew you wouldn’t listen to him right now. Even if things weren’t good between them right now, he still trusted Wonho to look after you, so he let the two of you go. The two of you walked together in silence for a while. The fresh air was nice, and it helped clear your mind.

“Wonho.”

“Hm?”

“How do you know EXO?”

“It’s a rather long story.” Wonho began. “Me and my brothers had our own troubles, and EXO came to our aid. They helped us out and took us under their wing. We learned about plants and their abilities, but we also drew unwanted attention. RF captured us all, one by one. They experimented on us and questioned us about EXO, but we didn’t know much.”

“But you got out.”

“We tried to escape, but that didn’t work, so… Hyungwon made a deal. He gave Baekhyun up in exchange for our freedom. I don’t know what happened after that.”

“So then what happened with me?”

“I was trying to put things back together, so I went to see you one night to catch up, and the next day you were gone. I feared it was RF, but I couldn’t do anything about it. The others told me that I had to let go, and for that I am so sorry.”

“Even if you did try to look for me, I doubt you would have found me.”

You and Wonho stopped when you heard a noise, looking around and seeing Hyungwon. Wonho immediately stepped in front of you, but you grabbed his arm. You knew there was tension between the two, but you didn’t want anyone getting hurt.

“What do you want?” Wonho spat. 

“I merely want to help fill in the gaps. I overheard you talking, and I thought you might want to know the truth.”

“About what?”

“The night y/n disappeared.”

“You know what happened to me?” You questioned. 

“I do. You see the night Wonho went to see you is the night EXO escaped. With the limited power they had, Kai teleported to the nearest person he trusted. That happened to be Wonho. He was at your place moments before they appeared, so that’s how EXO wound up in your backyard.”

“So it was my fault…” Wonho mumbled. “I’m the reason-”

“No.” You interrupted. “You can’t possibly blame yourself for something like that.”

“She’s right.” Hyungwon said. “Somethings are fated to happen, you can’t blame yourself for that night.”

“Was I always meant to meet EXO? To be close to them?”

“As far as Tao could see into the future, the answer was always yes.”

“Tao?”

“He would have loved to meet you, all of the others would.”

“Others…”

“What is it that you’re doing here?” Wonho asked. “No one’s exactly happy with you right now.”

“I know, but I want to help.”

“How?”

“I have a message for EXO. The base is the same, and the security system will be shut down in two days for scheduled maintenance. That’ll be the best time to strike, and this is only the beginning.”

“You expect me, us, to believe that?”

“I haven’t enjoyed my time with RF. Everything has a purpose, but I hope you’ll relay my message.”

Hyungwon left without another word. You had a lot to ponder now, but you knew it was best to get back to the others. When you returned your boys expressed their worries, but you assured them that you were okay. You still needed space, but you promised not to run off. Even if he didn’t like it, Wonho still relayed the message, and now everyone was on the same page.

“That’s why you came back.” Minhyuk said. “You want to destroy RF.”

“We won’t run anymore.” Xiumin stated.

“We’d appreciate a hand.” Chen added. “But you don’t have to. They’ve done enough to you guys.”

“All the more reason to assist.” Changkyun said. “It sounds like payback.”

“Am I included in this?”

Everyone looked over to see Hyungwon had made an appearance. Although he set his sight onto Kihyun, and the two stared at each other.

“Hyungwon…”

“It’s good to see you again.” Hyungwon smiled. “It’s been a while.”

“Yeah…”

“I can help with this plan. I know the base inside and out, but I understand you don’t trust me.”

“That may be the case.” Suho said. “But I don’t think you’d be here if you were truly untrustworthy.”

“You trust me?”

“I believe you have valuable information you’re willing to give us. Don’t you agree?”

“I do.”

Kim Jongin (Kai) 김종인 🐻 Overview

Kim Jongin, stage name Kai (from the Chinese for ‘open’), is a South Korean singer, model, actor, and dancer. He is a main dancer, sub rapper, sub vocalist, center, and visual of EXO. He is also a member of the South Korean supergroup SuperM, which debuted in 2019 as a collaboration between SM Entertainment and Capitol Records in the USA. 

This post is part of an effort to celebrate the accomplishments of EXO over the past 10 years and to provide tangible avenues for supporting these artists in 2022 (when they will likely be leaving SM Ent.) and beyond 🖤

Kai is widely considered to be one of the best dancers in South Korea and K-pop in general. He began to train in ballet while in third grade after he watched The Nutcracker, and started dancing when he was eight years old. After participating in the SM Youth Best Contest with the encouragement of his father, he won and signed with the company in 2007 at thirteen years old.

He debuted as a soloist in November 2020 with the release of his extended-play, Kai. As of February 2022 it has sold just under half a million copies. His second mini-album, Peaches, was released in late 2021 and inspired many trends online, including the Peaches dance challenge. 

Apart from his musical career, Kai has also starred in various television dramas such as Choco Bank (2016), Andante (2017), and Spring Has Come (2018). He is also highly involved in the fashion and beauty industries. From Gucci to Bobbi Brown to YSL Beauty to Levi’s to Seoul Fashion Week, his combination of style, charm, and striking appearance, makes Jongin a widely in-demand figure whose star is only going to rise.

He has not yet enlisted in his mandatory military service, but it’s estimated he will do so by the end of 2022. In the meantime, he has been keeping incredibly busy with fashion, music, and media projects (such as EXO’s TikTok account). With a goofy, sincere, and enigmatic charisma, Jongin is one of a kind. He’s a wonderful uncle, supportive member of every project he takes part in, and he represents Kpop around the world with his signature balance of sass and enthusiasm. Their journey to find you and bring you home starts a chain of events that leads to facing their own greatest fears, making unlikely allies, traveling to other worlds again and finally gathering the strength to take down their greatest enemy. Along the way you get to see their true colors and fall in love all over again, although you might come to realize you don’t like what you see in the mirror.

“Alright, let’s go over the plan.”

Everyone was gathered around the table, including yourself and Hyungwon. A plan of attack had been formulated, but it was important to go over the details before the big day.

“Security will be shut down for twenty minutes for routine maintenance.” Suho stated. “And we need to take advantage of that time. Once the shutdown happens we’ll make our way inside. Chen will go to the security office with DO where they’ll make sure everything stays off, and they’ll remain there as our eyes and ears.”

“For safety reasons Shownu and Kihyun will stay with us while the rest of you continue with the mission.” Chen added. “With the security center in our hands the next step is to evacuate everyone.”

“Problem is, we can’t just set off the alarms.” Chankyun reminded. “Since scheduled maintenance is going on, no alert system would be taken seriously, so we need an external force. That’s where Lay, Chanyeol, and Sehun come in.”

“Jooheon and I will accompany the three to the ventilation system.” Minhyuk continued. “From there Chen can provide power as we release fumes into the facility.”

“It’s harmless.” Lay assured. “But it will definitely force people to leave. The only issue there is that we’ll draw attention to our location.”

“Which is why we need to time this precisely.” Chanyeol said. “We have about twenty minutes to set everything up before taking action and facing resistance.”

“All the plants in the lab would still recognize Lay.” Jooheon mentioned. “So we also have that advantage.”

“That’s good, as we need all the advantages we can get.” Xiumin commented. “As for the rest of us, once the other two phases are set we’ll be going to the lab area and freeing all those that have been held captive. Of course all of this relies on Kai being able to go back and forth with multiple people at a time. Will you be alright?”

“It’ll be draining, but I can manage.” Kai stated. “I have a rendezvous point for everyone while we proceed with the rescue and then our escape. The only thing will be planting the bombs.”

“While I’m in the security office with Chen I can figure out where the structural weak points are.” DO explained. “It should be easier to set them up and destroy the whole place. Just don’t forget we need to destroy the servers as well.”

“I got that covered.” Baekhyun confirmed. “There won’t be anything to recover once I’m done.”

“Then what are we doing about y/n?” Sehun asked. “Are we really going to leave her here?”

“I’m fine.” You assured. “I can wait around for you guys.”

“Why not put her in the garden?”

“No.” Suho spoke. “We don’t need to do that. Although Hyungwon isn’t coming with us.”

“Can I ask why?” Hyungwon questioned. “I understand, but doesn’t that work against you?”

“You can be on comms. The lab is basically your home turf, and I don’t want complications.”

“Wait, so we’re gonna leave y/n alone with him?” Minhyuk wondered. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea either…”

“I’ll stay back too.” Wonho volunteered. “I’ll keep an eye on both of them. Too many of us can also complicate things.”

“That should work.” Suho agreed. “Although I do want to remind everyone, despite having deep ties here, all we can do is take down RF. From there it is up to the people of this Earth to move forward and do better.”

“We know.” Shownu stated. “Getting rid of RF is a good first step.”

As much as you wanted to voice your own concerns, you knew it best not to worry them. This whole thing was important to them, and for the time being you were going to sit on the sidelines and support them. Besides, there was still much you needed to come to terms with about yourself and your future.

“Y/n, how are you feeling?”

After the meeting everyone was told to prepare and get rest. While you were sitting out in the garden Kai came over, sitting down at your side.

“I’m alright… I think… but I’m honestly not sure…”

“I’m really sorry all this… happened the way it did… we should have been better…”

“I know you’re always trying to do your best… although I have to admit… I kinda want to stay here… this is my home planet after all…”

“It is… I’m sorry we didn’t tell you the truth sooner…”

“This place holds a lot of memories for both of us, I just don’t remember.” You chuckled. “Telling me would also mean talking about what happened here with RF, and it’s something you weren’t ready to face until now.”

“We really don’t deserve you.”

“Probably not… I have to ask though… why didn’t you use me to come back to this Earth? I’m from here. Instead we found some space pirates with a magic hourglass.”

“The story with them is complicated, but, despite this Earth being your homeworld, you’ve changed on many levels. The frequency I get from you is no longer the same as this world. There are similarities still, but it’s not accurate anymore.”

“Huh… what about you though?”

“Hm?”

“Is your frequency… could it take you home?”

“I’m honestly not sure.”

“Do you have a means of getting home? If you wanted to, that is.”

“Yeah. There’s always a way back home.” Kai gave you a smile. “You should get some sleep.”

“You too.”

“Good night then.”

“Good night.”

Come morning you could feel the tension in the air. It was pretty quiet except for talk of the task at hand. You couldn’t do anything besides wish them well and see them off as they embarked on this mission. The house once filled with life became quite empty as only three of you remained. Everything was set up in order to keep in contact with those who went out, which served to ease your worries, but now all you could do was hope everything went to plan. You remained in contact as the preparations were done, but once they made the move to enter the building it went silent. It was rather obvious you were worried.

“They’re gonna be fine, y/n.” Hyungwon assured. “Everything is in their favor.”

“I hope so…” You took a breath. “Can I ask… what were your lives like with EXO?”

“Interesting. They came to our world as visitors, tourists really, but this place wasn’t exactly doing well. It was hard not to interfere, especially back then. We crossed paths by chance, and they helped us. After they learned about what was happening, that’s when they began to show us their powers and what they could do to help. We all became like brothers, and were so focused on our own battles we didn’t realize RF growing in power. Not until we were ambushed.”

“Where was I… in all of this?”

“You were out on the front lines.” Wonho mentioned. “Helping those in need. We wanted to go out searching for you, but we never got the chance. We only kept in touch via messages, but then we went silent.”

“Because you got captured.”

“Yeah. It was chaos. We tried to fight them off, but it was no use. For the sake of not losing everything, Lay ended up putting Baekhyun in the garden and set up defenses around the house.”

“That didn’t last…”

“No, it did not.” Hyungwon said. “What they were doing to EXO was severe, and on top of that they were trying to get Baekhyun.”

“Which you did for them.” Wonho spat.

“I had to.”

“That’s a fucken lie.”

“Wonho, please, let him explain.” You said. “You’ve hated him for so long, but you don’t know what really happened.”

“We were all experimented on. Hyungwon was no exception, but he still turned against us.”

“I didn’t want to, but it was the only way.”

“You-”

“Who’s Tao?” You suddenly asked. “He was mentioned before…”

“… EXO used to be twelve.” Hyungwon spoke. “Some of us were closer to certain members, like Jooheon and Lay, as for me, I was close to Tao. He was worried about the others, so he asked me for a favor. Things would only get worse without Baekhyun, but it could also be a bargaining chip for the rest of us. They got us involved in these things without meaning to. The only reason me and my brothers managed to escape that night was because I told RF I’d be back with what they wanted most. It wasn’t easy to face any of them after that.”

“Then why did you do it?” Wonho questioned. “No one asked you to do this for us.”

“Tao asked me. You know he could see the future, he saw the outcome to all of this if things were left the way they were. He knew how it could get better, and that involved sacrifice, including himself.”

“What happened to him?” You wondered. “And the others? You said there were twelve.”

“The experiments RF were running… they went too far… Sehun wouldn’t have been here if not for Tao.”

“I wish I got to meet them.”

“They would have loved you, Tao was always happy to know his brothers wouldn’t be completely alone afterwards.”

Suho and Shownu were at the front, keeping an eye on the building from a safe distance. They knew that when security went down certain lights would shut off, and that was their chance to move in. Hyungwon had provided recent images of their target locations, so Kai could easily get them inside. Once they got their cue they all sprung into action. Kai took the first team into the security room, taking out the guards and removing them from the building. Chen acquainted himself with the security system, making sure to keep things down.

When Kai returned to the starting point he took the second team to the ventilation area. Once again they took care of the guards around and began to set up their plan. Lay began to grow flowers around the area, knowing Chanyeol was going to have to set them ablaze to get the proper fumes. Minhyuk and Jooheon were focused on figuring out the ventilation system. Everyone was counting down the minutes, knowing the alarms were about to go off, and the evacuation would begin. It wasn’t until their twenty minutes were up that they used their comms to communicate with one another.

Right on cue Chen set off the alarms and made sure all vents were open. Chanyeol began a controlled fire and Sehun made sure the fumes went into the vents and spread throughout them. Moments later Chen confirmed that an evacuation was underway, but guards were heading to the ventilation area and security office. That prepared everyone for a fight without interrupting the overall objective. When the lab had been mostly evacuated he informed Suho that they were good to start the next phase. Kai brought everyone inside, taking advantage of their sudden appearance to take out those that had remained.

Hyungwon had informed them where the keys were and how to free the others that were being held prisoner. Of course they weren’t exactly eager to accept help from strangers, but they all showed them the best of intentions about getting them out and away from this place. Once the evacuation was complete everyone began setting the bombs, taking directions from DO as he told them where to place them. While in the lab Baekhyun had been frying all the servers and anything else electronic, but he came across a locked door. He tried to fry the lock but his power didn’t work at all. 

He asked Chen for help over the comms, but on his end the door didn’t exist. By then Baekhyun had gathered attention, having Kai bring Chen over and the others. Chen couldn’t open the door either with his own powers. From there they all knew this place was protected against them specifically. They couldn’t use their powers to open the door, but surely someone else would know. Suho called Hyungwon over the comms, mentioning the ominous door in the lab and the fact they couldn’t open it.

“Probably best to just leave it and focus on the explosives. That place will get destroyed with everything else.”

“That’s not what I was asking. What’s behind the door?”

“I don’t know.”

“I don’t believe you. Considering everything you did for RF and the years you’ve worked for them, I highly doubt you don’t know all their secrets.”

“… 007768… Suho, you won’t like what’s on the other side.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.”

The code was entered into the door and they all stepped through. At first it was dark and then the lights came on. At first it seemed just like any other part of the lab, but then three giant containment tubes were illuminated, revealing familiar faces.

“Tao…”

Sehun immediately ran over to his long lost brother, banging his fist against the glass as if that would change the past. Everyone else seemed stunned in disbelief.

“You knew about this… didn’t you?” Suho questioned into the comms. “Hyungwon answer me!”

“I’m sorry… you should have known that death wouldn’t stop RF from running their tests…”

“Why didn’t you mention this sooner?”

“How was I supposed to tell you this? Especially considering why you returned to this Earth? This was never a rescue mission.”

“Still.”

“I can go back.” Sehun mumbled. “I… I have his power… I can fix this…”

“Sehun, you can’t.” Chanyeol came over and pulled him back. “You know time works differently in every world, and you don’t know how to control time.”

“I can try!”

“Sehun, please.”

“We can’t leave them… not again…”

“We won’t.” Lay assured. “They’re coming home with us, where they belong.”

“The rest of you go set the last of the bombs.” Suho ordered. “Lay, Xiumin, Kai, and I will get them home.”

The atmosphere had certainly changed, but they still had to complete their mission. It would take a lot more power for Kai to teleport home from such a far away place, but he could do it for his brothers. Once all the bombs were set the others were evacuated as well. Wonho could finish up the detonation as the others had somewhere else to be. After leaving the group found themselves in a garden. It was only familiar to a few, but they all understood where they were. The bodies had been laid down and the garden itself was taking them under. Lay had three new trees grow from the ground.

“They’re home.”

“We should bring y/n to see them.” Baekhyun said. “She never had a chance to meet them before. They would have loved her.”

When you heard about the bodies your heart sank. You may not have known them, but you could still feel pain.

“They never knew… that their brothers… why would RF do that?”

“To continue the experiments.” Hyungwon mentioned. “Because they still had the bodies they were able to give you some of your powers.”

“Powers? I don’t have powers. The boys each gave me a gift to look after me, but I can’t do anything with them, not really.”

“Ah… my mistake…”

You weren’t entirely sure you understood what Hyungwon had been saying. As you were thinking it over you hear some noise coming from the other side of the house. The others heard it too, but you told them you’d investigate as they still needed to detonate the bombs. You only took a few steps before an explosion threw you back. Your vision was blurry, and your ears were ringing. When you tried to move you felt the aches all over your body. You tried to look over at the others, but among the chaos you heard a gentle whisper from an unfamiliar voice.

“Hello, Angel…”

The others returned to the woods surrounding their base, making their way back. Although they all quickly started to run when they saw smoke. They came upon the house up in flames, Chanyeol quick to extinguish it and everyone rushing inside to look for the others. Beneath the rubble they located Hyungwon and Wonho, but you were nowhere to be found.

“What happened!?”

“I don’t know.” Hyungwon admitted. “There was some noise, and then an explosion.”

“Where’s y/n?”

“What?”

“She’s gone!” Kai yelled. “I can’t sense her here at all.”

“How could anyone get close to the house?” Minhyuk questioned. “The defenses were up. The only way to avoid them is to be someone the plants are familiar with.”

With that said all eyes turned to Hyungwon. It took him a second to realize what everyone was silently accusing him of, but he was quick to deny it.

“I didn’t kidnap her… I’m still here, wouldn’t I have run away with her if I did? If you don’t believe me, give me a truth serum.”

“You-”

“Someone’s coming.”

Despite the commotion the defenses were still up and Lay was informed of an uninvited guest approaching. He was ready to strike, but something was telling him to hold back. A few others went with him out to the front, seeing a figure emerge from the surrounding woods.

“I come in peace.”

“Who are you?”

“A friend. I’ve been watching you all for quite some time now, and I’m quite impressed. It wasn’t an easy decision to face RF. Although this place is only the tip of the iceberg.”

“You haven’t answered me yet.” Suho hissed. “Who are you!?”

“I’m just like you. A victim of RF’s little experiments. Before those bitches got their hands on you, I was their plaything.” The stranger took a bow. “The name’s Taemin.”

“You said you’ve been watching us.” Xiumin remarked. “Do you know who took y/n?”

“Your girl? Yes, I saw who took her, and it’s quite perplexing.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“The ones that took her, well, it was you.”

Prompt: After surviving a devastating car accident you awoke with amnesia, no memory of who you were, and the only connection to your past was your husband, Suho. The CEO of the biggest pharmaceutical company in the world, who loved you to the ends of the universe, even if you didn’t remember. You knew his love was true, cause you felt your love for him in your heart. Three years later you’re as happy as you can be with him, but there’s just something that’s not right, and you’re not so sure you can figure out what.

“For the last time… I work alone…”

    Johnny spit out some blood, surprised he hadn’t lost a tooth yet. It was also fortunate, his smile was very important to his charm. Suho stood before him, hands in his pockets, watching unbothered as Minho kept punching him. He had already given his story, how he planned his revenge and only had to tweak it when he discovered you were alive. He worked alone, because he knew no one else could help him take down the king.

“You really expect me to believe you didn’t have help?”

“Who would raise a fist… against you?”

“A king always has enemies.”

“And what would stop them… from betraying me… to win your favor? Hm?”

“Touche. So let’s circle back to this later.” Suho grabbed Johnny’s face. “What’s your end goal here? Take over the city? You think you-”

“No… I just want you dead… for everything you did to me… and y/n…”

“I gave you both a much better life, and you hate me for it. That doesn’t make sense.”

“You manipulated y/n… and when she rejected you… you became a monster…”

“Johnny boy, I’ve always been a monster.”

“And y/n saw that… can put that shit back in a bottle…”

“We’re done here. It doesn’t matter if you had help, you were the inside man, and with you dead, they have nothing else.”

“What about y/n!”

“What about her? She’ll be fine if that’s what you’re worried about. I’ll take good care of her.”

“I don’t believe that. I never did.”

    As you began to regain consciousness you could feel movement. You were moving, and when you opened you only got confirmation. You were being pushed in a wheelchair, and you could see the house before you, getting closer and closer. Except it wasn’t a home for you anymore, it was a prison, even if you didn’t know it all this time. You began to panic as the house got closer and closer, that’s when you realized you were restrained to the chair. Screaming wouldn’t help you either, the house was pretty isolated from anyone else.

“Stop… stop… please stop!”

    You looked back to see Chanyeol pushing your wheelchair, Xiumin walking alongside him. Neither were listening to your pleas, and you just started sobbing. You knew that going into that house, you’d probably never get out again. Worst of all, you had no idea what had happened to Johnny. You had collapsed at the hideout, only to wake up in the hospital with Suho there. If he had gotten caught, you knew things would be far worse for him.

    Once inside the house you didn’t know what to expect, but being taken into a hidden elevator in Suho’s study did not make you feel any better. You had a pretty good idea where you were going. You knew there was an infirmary in the house, but there were definitely other secrets below the house you never knew of. You still had tears slipping down your face, but at this point there was no reason to make such a fuss.

“Where’s Suho… I want to see him…”

“I was just thinking about you too.”

    You stopped, seeing Suho before you. There were still tears on your face, but you didn’t care. You looked up at him, turning your hands to fists.

“Where’s Johnny?”

Suho’s smile flattered. “Do you remember him?”

“Where is he?”

“Answer me, and I’ll answer you.”

“Where is my friend?”

“Hm… shall we go see him?”

    Suho gestured for the others to follow, pushing you along behind him. You kept your head up, trying to be as strong as you could be. You came into another room, your eyes immediately drawn over to Johnny. You inhaled sharply upon seeing his beat up body, wanting more than anything to go to him, but you were kept at a distance.

“I brought a guest.”

“Y/n… y/n are you alright?” You nodded. “That’s good… everything’s going to be okay…”

“Johnny…”

“How about a deal?” Suho said. “You give up whoever was helping you, and I’ll let you live.”

“I’m not working with anyone!”

“I don’t believe you, but your life isn’t yours.”

“What?”

“You give me what I want, you live, I promise.”

“Your words don’t mean shit.”

“To you, but for y/n.” Suho looked over at you. “If he cooperates with me, I promise I’ll let him live.”

“I won’t remember him…”

“But you’ll know in your heart that I have kept my word, because I do mean it. His whole little plan was because he thought you were dead, but you aren’t. He’d hold no anger in that regard towards me, so I can forgive this confusion.”

“… you’re lying…”

“Not to you, not about this.”

“You’d use her… against me…” Johnny spat. “Just to have a reason to go after one of the families!”

“What will it be?”

    Johnny looked over at you, seeing the red in your eyes from the crying. He didn’t want you to witness something so horrible, even if you would forget. At the same time, he couldn’t bring himself to tell the truth. You even subtly shook your head, given the predicted outcome, no one would win in the end, no matter what.

“Fuck you.”

“Very well then. You two can take y/n now.”

“No! Johnny! Johnny!”

“It’s okay… you’ll be okay…”

“Johnny!”

    You desperately pulled on your restraints, screaming for Johnny, for mercy, but your cries fell on deaf ears. You could hear your heart pounding in your chest, the tears flowing once more. You didn’t even notice the pinch in your neck until you began to grow tired, screaming once more, trying to stay awake, but it was pointless. A door before you was opened and everything flashed a bright white before cutting to black.

Months Ago

“You’ve really thought this out.”

“Yes, sir.”

“But your plan does rely on our cooperation.”

“I know, sir. You’re the rightful-”

    Jaebeom put a hand up to silence Johnny. He knew where this was going, and he had heard it enough times already.

“You know how things work in this city. We respect power. The late Mr. Kim may not have wanted his son to inherit the throne, but he made a move and I respect that.”

“You’ve seen how Suho runs things. It’s not-”

“It’s stable. I may not agree with him, but if I make a move against him, this city will fall into chaos. I will not be doing that. This is my city too, and I won’t cause trouble.”

“You being complacent is why things are the way they are. You have power, you could-”

“I won’t hear anymore of this, Johnny. And for your sake I won’t say anything about this meeting or your intentions.” Jaebeom sighed. “What you’re trying to do is suicide.”

“I know I’m putting my life on the line. He has to pay for what he’s done.”

“You may be looking at things the wrong way…”

“What?”

“Forget about revenge Johnny, you’ll only end up dead.”

    There was nothing more to be said, so Johnny was escorted out. Without the Im family he knew he didn’t stand much of a chance, but he did have a backup plan. He wasn’t going to give up so easily. He laid low while in the city, not needing attention until he was ready, making his way to the docks. He was still known amongst the families, so it wasn’t hard to see the head of the Lee family on such short notice.

“Johnny, how have you been?”

“Alright, sir. How has business been?”

“Flourishing. But enough small talk. What are you doing here? I thought you’d never set foot in this city again.”

“I have my reasons, and I need your help.”

“Let me guess. You wanna attack the Kim family.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Alright, let’s hear it. What’s your big plan?”

    Johnny divulged his plan to Taeyong, explaining how things would work out. He knew it was dangerous to tell anyone this, he could be betrayed, but he knew the prospect of a coup was appealing to the other families, especially those who knew the late Mr. Kim, so he had to hope he was right. Taeyong was silent for a long while, clearly weighing his options.

“Let’s go for a drive.”

    Johnny didn’t question it, knowing very well he could be taken to Suho, or executed in secret. The drive was quiet, and he wasn’t going to ask Taeyong what he was thinking. He was on thin ice, so it was best he wait and see how things played out. The car stopped at some apartment building and he followed Taeyong inside. The place seemed to be under construction, which made him all the more sure he was going to be taken out.

“Jaebeom, where are the welcome drinks?”

    Taeyong entered one of the backrooms, being very loud about his presence and not fearing all the guns pointed his way. After confirming who was here, Jaebeom had his men lower their weapons.

“Taeyong, how did you find me?”

“All these materials came through my dock, it would be bad for business if I didn’t keep track of such things. Especially when they are secretly for one of the families.”

“What do you want?”

“Oh I won’t tell Suho if that’s what you’re worried about. That’s your business. No, I’m here to talk about something else.”

“I’ve already heard from Johnny, so you can go.”

“Oh, I wasn’t your first pick?”

“I-”

“Joking. I understand.” Taeyong smiled. “It makes things easier. You know what’s going down.”

“You intend to go along with him?”

“And if I do?”

“Keep me out of it. I won’t cause problems for the city.”

“These things can be done with less chaos, but I’m here for something else. I know you won’t participate, that’s fine. What I want is to know that you’ll do the right thing in the end.”

“Which is?”

“Once Suho is dealt with, you take the throne.”

Jaebeom scoffed. “You don’t want it?”

“It’s not that I can’t wear the crown, but I simply know you’d do better for this city. The late Mr. Kim knew that too, and I would like to honor his choice.”

“We respect power in this city, and-”

“You won’t make a move for what’s rightfully yours for the sake of not turning this city into a war zone. It can be seen as cowardice or wisdom beyond me. Either way, I am making a move to throw that piece of shit a cliff. So, will you accept the gift I present to you when the time comes.”

“Why should I go along with this?”

“Because you have nothing to lose.” Johnny said. “If we fail, we’ll get executed, and nothing regarding you knowing about this coup will ever come to light. If we succeed, you can make the city better than it already is.”

“Then I guess we’ll see whether you win or not.“

“She’ll always hate you… you know that right?”

“I’ll only know her love.”

“You’re sick.”

“And you’re a dead man. It really does hurt me, we were such good friends once.”

“We weren’t, you were my boss.”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk, too late for that kinda talk. Kill him.”

    Minho pulled out his gun, cocking it and aiming it at Johnny’s head. By now he had been restrained, so all he could do was lean forward and press his head to the barrel of the gun. Even if this was his end, right here, right now, he knew you would be alright. His only regret was not being able to see you again.

“Sir, we have a problem.”

    Tao’s voice caught everyone’s attention. Suho stepped away with him for a moment before ordering everyone out, including Minho. Johnny had no idea what was going on, but now that he was alone he knew he couldn’t just sit there. He startled fiddling with his restraints, figuring he might have to dislocate his thumb to truly get out. Eventually he did manage to get himself free, cautiously pressing his ear against the door to listen for others. He had no weapons on him, but he could still fight despite his condition.

    When he felt the coast was clear he carefully opened the door, seeing that the hall was empty. Something was definitely going on for him to be left alive, but his priority was finding you. Even if he seemed to be alone he was still cautious as he checked the other rooms around him. For the most part they were empty until he found what he was looking for. You were lying in bed, restrained, Xiumin checking over some of the machinery when he noticed the intruder. He drew his weapon but Johnny quickly took cover. Given the makeshift infirmary this room was, there were some things he could use to defend himself.

    It was still a rather small room, and he knew Xiumin wouldn’t shoot recklessly for fear of hurting you. He was patient, and made his move when he saw an opening. There was a bit of a struggle, but he managed to disarm Xiumin, taking his weapon, and incapacitating him. After making sure he was restrained he checked on you, quickly shutting everything off and removing all the wires and needles attached to you. He gently caressed your face, trying to coax you awake. The closest he got was your eyes peeking open, a small whimper from you.

“John…”

“I’m here, you’re okay. Let’s get you out of here.”

    Johnny picked you up in his arms, carrying you out with him. You were still under the effects of the sedative, slipping in and out of consciousness. Johnny just wanted to get you out of here. If he could just leave with you, get out of this city, then the two of you could disappear. That should have been his goal the moment he realized you were alive. Instead he had been greedy, thinking he could have it all. Somehow he managed to find the elevator that led back up to the main house. Although the first thing he heard was gunfire and immediately got down.

“Y/n… y/n, can you hear me?”

“Hm…”

“Do you think you can walk?”

“… maybe…”

“Let’s try.”

    You carefully stood up, getting your feet under you and taking a few steps. Running would be ideal, but for now walking would do. If he really wanted to get out undetected, going slow and being quiet was better. You held his hand tightly, right behind him, while he took point and held up the gun, ready to fire at any given moment. As you two snuck around you could hear gunfire on occasion, and it was making you nervous. You held Johnny’s hand tightly, wanting this nightmare to end more than anything. Then there was a shot that was undoubtedly close and Johnny collapsed.

“Johnny!”

    You were on top of him immediately, the adrenaline snapping you wide awake, well aware of the blood from his chest. You tried to apply pressure, telling him to stay awake, when you were grabbed. Suho pinned you against the wall, and you became aware of his messy hair, along with the blood on his clothes.

“What are you doing up here!”

“Suho…”

    Another shot went off and you screamed. Suho let you go, doubling over from his own injuries. You saw Johnny holding up the gun, for the moment ignoring his own pain. He shot again and Suho stumbled back. He didn’t hesitate to shoot back, Johnny collapsing this time. Before you could get to him Suho grabbed you, and the two of you collapsed, Suho pinning you beneath him. He had trouble breathing, but he kept his eyes locked on yours. You could see his panic, his desperation.

“Y/n…”

“Suho…”

“I won’t leave you…”

“What-”

    You soon found his hands around your neck, putting pressure. Your eyes went wide and you grabbed his arms, trying to get him off. Even in his condition he was still stronger than you.

“Su… Suho…”

    You squirmed under him, desperate to get him off, but you could feel yourself running out of oxygen. Your vision was already starting to go black when you could suddenly breath. Somehow Suho was off of you, but you were more focused on recovering your breath, that is until multiple shots rang out. You covered your ears, but they were already ringing. You looked over to see Suho on the ground, red starting to pool around him. Standing above him was a vaguely familiar face. They looked over at you, telling you something but you just saw their lips moving. 

    Everything had been building up and you just collapsed. The darkness was pulling you under, and you definitely didn’t have the strength to fight it anymore. As you laid on the floor you could hear mumbles, feeling someone grab you and shake you, but you couldn’t make anything out. You closed your eyes, wanting to disappear for a while. Even if you were uncertain about the fate of those around you, there was something you were certain about. One way or another this was all over, you knew that, you could feel it, and it gave you a strange feeling of peace you just accepted.
