Beware of cyber scams: How hackers tried to scam me - CyberTalk
Lari Luoma has over 20 years of experience working in the fields of security and networking. For the last 13 years, he has worked with Check Point Professional Services as a security consultant, helping customers worldwide implement the best-in-class cyber security. He is a subject matter expert in hyper-scalable security solutions.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Cyber crime is on the rise. People encounter scams in their everyday lives without really understanding they are being scammed. These vexing and vicious scams can arrive in various forms; phishing emails, fraudulent phone calls or text messages. All of them aim to exploit unsuspecting victims for financial gain. Recently, I found myself on the receiving end of one such scam. This led me to reflect on how important it is to actively anticipate the latest cyber threats and to maintain vigilance.
It began with an email notification purporting to be from PayPal. The notification claimed that my account had been charged $600 for McAfee Antivirus software. I was urged to take immediate action. The email instructed me to contact a provided customer service number to resolve the supposed issue. As I scrutinized the email further, alarm bells rang in my mind. The sender’s address raised suspicion— the address was connected to a generic Gmail account, a far cry from the official communication channels one would expect from PayPal.
Despite my skepticism, I decided to call the provided number to investigate. What ensued was a conversation with an individual who claimed to be a customer service representative. However, the person’s demeanor was far from professional. The individual immediately inquired about my location and whether or not I was on my laptop. When I requested a reason and asked why we couldn’t handle the issue over the phone, the person replied that it was because a laptop has a bigger screen, and it would be easier to fill out the form that he was going to send.
Sensing something amiss, I stated that I wasn’t home and didn’t have my laptop with me, to which the caller abruptly hung up. It was a clear indication of foul play; a phishing attempt to obtain sensitive information or compromise my device’s security.
Reflecting on this encounter, I realized just how easily people can be fooled if they think that they are going to lose money. These scammers were very unprofessional and didn’t sound authentic on the phone. Also, using a Gmail address was a big mistake for them. If they had executed on their activities with a bit more sophistication and polish, I might have fallen victim to the scam.
Here are crucial tips to help you and yours avoid falling victim to similar scams. Consider sharing these tips with employees:
1. Verify sender information: Always scrutinize the email sender’s address. Look for any red flags, such as suspicious domain names or generic email providers (like Gmail or Yahoo), especially if they’re being used for “official” communications from reputable organizations.
2. Exercise caution with unsolicited requests: Be wary of unsolicited emails or messages requesting urgent action, especially if the emails or messages involve financial transactions or account verification. Legitimate companies typically don’t request sensitive information via email.
3. Double-check website URLs: Before clicking on any links in emails, hover over them to preview the URL. Verify that they lead to legitimate websites. Make sure that they aren’t phony links to phishing sites that were designed to steal login credentials or personal data.
4. Use two-factor authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA wherever possible, especially for sensitive accounts, like bank accounts or email accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a secondary verification method, such as a code sent to your phone.
5. Stay informed and educated: Keep abreast of the latest cyber security threats and techniques used by scammers. Organizations like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and cyber security blogs, like CyberTalk.org, provide valuable resources and tips for protecting yourself online.
6. Report suspicious activity: If you encounter a potential scam or phishing attempt, report it to the appropriate authorities or the impersonated business. This helps raise awareness and can compel a business to act, thereby preventing others from falling victim to similar schemes.
7. Don’t engage in discussion with scammers: If the email includes a phone number, you shouldn’t call to resolve the alleged issue.
Maintain vigilance regarding any unsolicited messages that you receive. Don’t click on any links and don’t call numbers provided. If an email informs you that a large sum has been debited from your account, consider whether or not the story seems authentic. Check your credit card bills and contact the real customer support numbers for the company that the scammers are purportedly from.
For instance, in the case that I outlined above, I should have researched the real customer support number for McAfee or Paypal and called there, rather than calling the number that was included in the message. Stay savvy and secure.

Emerging Trends in Cyber Security: Issues and Legal Strategies I Suggest to Improve Digital Security in Sri Lanka.
I see these as things that should be developed in relation to Cyber Security in Sri Lanka, and these can be developed as new trends in our country at present. Also, if these things are not updated, we may have to face big challenges in the future.
1. Data Protection and Privacy
- Establish regulations for the collection, storage, processing, and sharing of personal and sensitive data.
- Outline principles for obtaining informed consent from individuals for data usage.
2. Cybercrime Provisions
- Commit cybercrimes such as unauthorized access, hacking, data breaches, identity theft, and cyberbullying. Laws should be tightened for this.
- Define punishments and penalties for various cyber crimes to deter potential offenders. It is wise to introduce new rules.
3. Critical Infrastructure Protection
- Identify critical sectors such as energy, finance, healthcare, and transportation that require enhanced cyber security measures.
- Mandate security assessments, incident reporting, and security protocols for critical infrastructure entities.
4. Incident Reporting and Response
- Mandate organizations to report cyber security incidents to designated authorities within a specified time frame.
- Establish procedures for incident response, including coordination between public and private sectors.
5. National Cyber Security Authority
- Create a centralized authority responsible for overseeing cybersecurity initiatives, setting standards, and enforcing cybersecurity laws. I see that CERT is doing a great job on this.
6. Information Sharing and Collaboration
- Encourage public-private partnerships for sharing threat intelligence and collaborating on cyber security initiatives.
- Establish mechanisms for information exchange between government agencies, the private sector, and international partners.
7. Capacity Building and Awareness
- Develop educational programs to raise awareness of cybersecurity risks and best practices among citizens, businesses, and government employees. Currently, it appears that this has not really increased in Sri Lanka.
- Promote research and innovation in cyber security to stay ahead of emerging threats.
8. Regulation of emerging technologies
- Address the challenges posed by emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, and blockchain in terms of security and privacy. Nowadays, AI is gaining popularity in a new way.
- Set guidelines for the responsible development and use of these technologies.
Legislation: Introduce specific laws targeting cybersecurity and AI crimes. This could include laws defining offenses, penalties, and jurisdiction related to cybercrimes involving AI, such as unauthorized access, data breaches, AI-based fraud, AI manipulation for criminal purposes, etc.
Public Awareness and Education: Implement programs to educate the public, businesses, and law enforcement agencies about cybersecurity threats related to AI and how to prevent, identify, and report such crimes.
9. International Collaboration
- Ratify and enforce international cyber security conventions and treaties to enhance cooperation on cybercrime prevention and response.
10. Regulatory Compliance and Audits
- Mandate organizations to implement cyber security measures, conduct regular audits, and demonstrate compliance with established standards.
11. Penalties and Enforcement
- Specify fines, penalties, and sanctions for violations of cyber security laws to ensure accountability.
- Define the role of law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting cybercrimes.
12. Judicial Process and Digital Evidence
- Outline procedures for gathering and handling digital evidence in cybercrime cases, ensuring admissibility in court.
13. Reporting Channels for Vulnerabilities
- Encourage responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities by creating mechanisms for reporting vulnerabilities without legal repercussions.

32 Real Black Horror Stories That Will Spook You Out
It's not ghost stories that can give you a fright during Spooky Season. Check out these real life horrors.
By
Kalyn Womack
Updated12 hours ago
Alright y’all... Spooky Season is upon us which means every channel on television is going to provide their own curated lists of Halloween-themed movies and scary stories. Many of them are the classic, fictional tales of the haunted woods, demonically possessed children or serial killers who ruin a friend group’s getaway.
However, you’d be surprised how many films reflect true crimes that occurred in real life.
Don’t be fooled by the overwhelmingly white faces of serial killers and mystery murder victims. The Black community has its own Jeffrey Dahmer’sand seen its own share of horrors beyond the 400 years of slavery. Seriously! There are still cold cases, unsolved crimes and cold-hearted killersthat haunt families as well as the crime junkies who did a nosedive into each eerie case.
Ghost stories and horror films can be spooky but are they a match for these real life horror stories? Decide for yourself.

Delphine LaLaurie’s Attic
ADVERTISEMENT
Native of Spanish-colonial Louisiana, LaLaurie may have been New Orleans’ first serial killer. On the street, she was seen to be rather kind to Black people. Until one morning in 1834, a fire broke out in her home revealing several starved, tortured and mutilated enslaved people. One elderly woman was found chained to the kitchen stove. More were found suspended by the neck, limbs torn and stretched abnormally or shackled by spiked iron collars.
Neighbors had known already that the upper portion of her mansion was used into a makeshift prison where she killed a total of 12 enslaved people including her cook and the woman’s children. The only one she didn’t kill may have been the 8-year-old girl who fell to her death from the roof of the mansion running from LaLaurie’s whip. An angry mob stormed the home after discovering her heinous crimes leading LaLaurie to flee overseas.

The Civil Rights power couple founded a chapter of the NAACP in Brevard County, Fla. The two were teachers but worked to help Black people vote, investigated hate crimes and overall fought for racial equality. They both fought in the Groveland case where four Black men were wrongfully convicted of raping a woman. However Christmas night, a handmade explosive of dynamite detonated under the couple’s bed.
Harry died on his way to the hospital and Harriette died nine days later. It was found 50 years later that four KKK members were behind the killing and no one was arrested.

Disputed Death of Tamla Horsford
Three years ago, Tamla Horsford was found dead in a friend’s backyard. She had been invited to a slumber party where she’d been drinking, according to 11Alive News. Witnesses claimed Horsford went out on the balcony for a cigarette. She allegedly fell over the balcony to her death. However, the position of her body at the crime scene and an independent autopsy found inconsistencies in what led to her death.
Investigators suspected Horsford sustained injuries before she fell. It’s even uncertain whether she’d fallen at all, due to the absence of skull fractures and broken bones. After the story of her death went viral, many in the cyber world suspected it was a murder, given that Horsford was the only Black woman at the party, but that’s never been confirmed.

Death of Kenneka Jenkins
ADVERTISEMENT
Jenkins, 19, was found dead inside a freezer at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois in 2017, per ABC 7 Chicago. Jenkins was attending a hotel party with friends when surveillance video picked up footage of her walking in the hallway by herself. That’s it. Somehow, she ended up in the hotel’s kitchen freezer, where she was locked inside.
Social media videos of the party flooded the internet as spectators tried to piece together the moments leading up to her death. Officials ruled her death an accident due to hypothermia. Despite the online conspiracies, officials did not find evidence of foul play in Jenkins’ death.

In 1987, Harrison “Marty” Graham was ordered to vacate his home due to a foul odor reeking from his unit. The smell came from the bodies of seven women who were found among trash and mattresses in Graham’s apartment, per the Philly Voice. More skeletal remains were found in his closet as well as in a green duffel bag full of bones on his roof.
Reports say Graham strangled the women he met in the Temple University area to death after luring them back to his home—which was the origin of his nickname: “House of Death” killer. He was convicted on both manslaughter and abuse of corpse charges, and fully admitted his guilt.
He escaped death row due to mental disability. He’s currently serving life in prison.

The Hanging of Ben Keita
The 18-year-old was found hanging from a tree 2.5 feet off the ground in a woodsy area in Seattle three months after he disappeared in 2017. An autopsy found his body was partially frozen but there were no signs of any trauma. At first, this led the medical examiner to rule his death a homicide but because the tree branch his body dangled from was 30 feet in the air, the manner of death was “undetermined.”
Sadly, his family said he plans to go to medical school and become a medical examiner himself. They still don’t know what led to his disappearance and death. The FBI is reviewed the case with the local police but it’s unclear what the findings were.

Opelika Jane Doe
The body of an unidentified little girl was foundbehind a trailer park in Opelika, Ala. in 2012. Near her body was a long-sleeved pink shirt with heart buttons. Authorities described her to be between the ages 4 and 7 and concluded the girl was physically abused by her killer.
The cops said she had scarring in her left eye, blinding her but the decomposition of her body left her unrecognizable. The police used digital claymation to reconstruct what her face would have looked like. In 2016, the police got a hold of photographs of a disfigured girl at Opelika’s Greater Peace Baptist Church Vacation Bible School. She was identified as Amore Joveah Wiggins in January 2023. Her father was charged with felony murder and he and his wife were charged with failure to report a missing child.

OJ Simpson Murder Trial
ADVERTISEMENT
Former NFL star and actor Orenthal James (O.J.) Simpson was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Reports say the two were found dead outside Nicole’s condo.
Simpson’s trial happened around the same time as the Black LA community was rioting against police brutality and racism following the brutal beating of Rodney King. With racial tensions high, many Black people believed O.J. was being set up by the system. Public pressure led the jury to acquit Simpson of his charges.
The world watched the drama unfold on mostly live television.Everything was called into question, from DNA samples—which included blood, hair follicles and materials from Simpson’s vehicle—to the intentions of the LA police. The infamous glove found on Simpson’s property that matched his DNA as well as that of the two victims was also entered into evidence. Simpson’s attorneys, however, showed the world it didn’t fit and asked the jurors to acquit, which they did.

Alonzo Brooks
The body of 23-year-old Alonzo Brooks was found in a Kansas creek back in 2004. It wasn’t until 2021 that his mysterious death was ruled a homicide after his remains were exhumed. The police say he was last seen at a party where he was only one of three Black men in attendance. He was left without a ride home and didn’t come home the next day, details leading investigators to suspect his killing was racially motivated.

The suspect was nicknamed the Freeway Phantom after a signed letter was discovered in one of the victim’s pockets.
“This is tantamount to my insensitivity to people, especially women. I will admit the others when you catch me, if you can!” it read.
Authorities assume the suspect lived in the same neighborhoods as the girls, however, the case has been cold now for decades. No one has attempted to uncover the mystery murderer other than author Victoria Hester and her father Blaine Pardoe, who have been looking into the case since 2019, per WUSA 9.

Mississippi Burning Killings
On June 21, 1964, James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were in Neshoba County to look into the burning of the CORE Freedom School site, reports say.
The three were volunteering to help people register to vote as a part of the Mississippi Summer Project, per PBS. However, they weren’t aware that the burned down site they went to visit was a product of the KKK, who didn’t plan on stopping their trail of arsons.
On the drive back, the three were stopped by a sheriff and arrested. Then they disappeared. After an investigation into their vanishing was opened, their remains were found in the swamps of the Mississippi. They’d been tortured and killed by seven members of the KKK—all of whom were found guilty of the killings.

Controversial Death of Sam Cooke
Soul, gospel and rock legend Sam Cooke was only 33 when he was shot and killed. According to PEOPLE, he spent his last night at a chic restaurant in LA. with Elisa Boyer, then headed to his hotel. Boyer said once the two got to the room, she feared Cooke was going rape her. When he went into the bathroom she fled and called the police.
Cooke allegedly assaulted the motel manager, Bertha Franklin, demanding to know where Boyer had gone. Franklin said she grabbed her pistol and shot him three times. Some believe there’s more to the story.
One theory suggests Boyer and Franklin conspired to lure Cooke to the hotel and rob him of his money. Another detail revealed that the bullet that killed Cooke didn’t match Franklin’s firearm. Others believe Cooke’s turn from love-song singer to civil rights activist had made him another target for the Feds.

Assassination of Malcolm X
On Feb. 21, 1965, civil rights activist Malcolm X was about to give a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan. When he stepped to the podium, someone threw a makeshift bomb into the audience, causing the two security guards in front of the stage to leave their posts, per WashPo. As Malcolm tried to calm the crowd, a man charged toward him and shot him in the chest with a shotgun. Two other men shot him in the ankle and legs from the side of the stage.

One gunman, Talmadge Hayer, confessed to the shooting and was convicted. Two other members of the National of Islam were convicted as well, but were recently exonerated. The public speculated about what really happened and who plotted against the civil rights leader.
Certainly, many pointed to the NYPD and FBI as having a hand in it. However, documentaries about Malcolm X suggest he knew the government was after him because of his “radical” views about what achieving freedom would entail.

Alleged Murder of Shanquella Robinson
Reports say Shanquella Robinson went to a resort in Cabo San Lucas with six friends. Less than 24 hours later, she was found dead.
Robinson’s friends allege she died of alcohol poisoning. However, an autopsy found she suffered a broken neck and spine fractures, per NBC News. Additionally, when her friends called for help, they refused to let her be taken to the hospital. The doctor who arrived spent three hours trying to revive Robinson.
What seemed like a freak accidental death was soon seen as a murder cover up by social media users. Videos of Shanquella being beaten and dragged circulated on Twitter and her father identified two of her attackers as the “friends” she went on the trip with. Others claim the group stole her money in order to flee and leave her behind in Mexico.
The noise around the case caused the FBI and Mexican authorities to open a homicide investigation. Local reporters have tried to contact the witnesses, with no luck.

Mysterious Death of Kendrick Johnson
This story may go down in modern-day history as one of America’s eeriest crimes. In 2013, 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead rolled up inside of a wrestling mat in the Lowndes High School gymnasium in Valdosta, Georgia. Officials ruled his death a freak accident, suggesting he suffered “positional asphyxia” by getting himself stuck in the mat, reports say. However, his family insisted foul play was involved.
A documentary on his death revealed some stunning details that led to a second investigationof his case. First, his autopsy revealed he suffered blunt force trauma to the neck and his death was consequently ruled a homicide. Secondly, a few of his internal organs were missing. Lastly, two of Johnson’s peers, who were brothers, were named persons of interest in the case but were never charged.
Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk offered $1 million of his own money for tips about the case after closing the second investigation, per NBC News.

Lynching of Emmett Till
A true American horror story, Emmett Louis Till was only 15 when he was kidnapped and brutally murdered. Till, who was from Chicago, had gone to Mississippi to visit family in August 1955. A young city boy, he had no idea how dangerous the Delta could be. Eventually, he was accused of whistling at a white woman in a store. That woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham, told her husband and his brother that Till had assaulted her.
The two men tracked down Till, snatched him from his bed, tortured and mutilated him and left his body in the river. When his body was recovered, he was barely recognizable. His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, held an open casket funeral which sparked a new wave of civil rights protests against the senseless violence racism had brewed.

Alleged Lynching of Quawan Charles
Quawan “Bobby” Charles was also 15 when he died. He was reported missing in October 2020 to the Baldwin Police Department in Louisiana, per ABC News. However, they failed to release an Amber Alert or report his disappearance to the media. Instead, he was classified as a runaway.
The last place Charles was seen was getting into a car with a woman named Janet Irvin. She admitted to picking up Charles to take him back to her home without permission. She also claimed he ran away from her home.
Charles’ body was found just a mile from her house in a sugar cane field. His cause of death was ruled a drowning, although the ditch only held two feet of water. The mutilated images of his body that circulated on social media told a different story. Irvin was arrested more than 100 days after Charles was found.

Disappearance and Death of Jelani Day
Illinois State graduate student Jelani Day was found dead in the Illinois River, according to NBC News. Day was only 25 when he went missing on August 24, 2022 and was last seen at a dispensary. His car was later found a mile away from his body. Inside the car? The clothes he was last seen wearing.

The county coroner ruled Day’s death a drowning. Day’s family insists, however, that he was an avid swimmer and did he show any suicidal symptoms that would lead him to drown himself. It’s unknown how he ended up in the river.
His family demanded a federal investigation into his death and believe foul play was involved. The FBI offered a $10,000 reward for tips.

Disappearance of the Millbrook Twins
Dannette and Jeanette Millbrook, 15, have been missing since March 18, 1990. According to WJBF, their case was opened back up in 2013 when it went viral after a documentary on their disappearance aired. The police initially wrote off the mystery as a case of runaways. The last time they were seen was at a Pump-N-Shop store, per the family. Their younger sister recalled walking with her mother to find them the night they vanished.

True crime spectators wonder if they’d been abducted by serial killer Joseph Patrick Washington, who lived in their neighborhood. Their father was also reported to be sexually abusive and some question if he may have abducted them himself. The most frustrating part of the case is that there was no investigation to begin with. So, where does one start?
The family put up two billboards, asking the public to help them find any information about their loved ones; a $50,000 reward has been offered for any information.

The public outrage after the incident caused the FBI to launch an investigation. After finding a few suspects, no one was indicted due to lack of evidence, per the National Park Service. However, Alabama Attorney General Bill Baxley reopened the case and investigators eventually discovered that the FBI had hidden critical evidence. Robert Chambliss, Thomas Blanton and Bobby Frank Cherry were eventually convicted of murder in the case.

Murder of Erica ‘Precious Doe’ Green
Green was only three years old when she was brutally murdered, per CBS News. Her stepfather, Harrell Johnson, was reported to have beaten her for crying, peeing on herself and refusing to eat. Johnson’s cousin, Lawanda Driskell said she heard him tell Green’s mother, Michelle, to get a hold of her daughter before he “does something bad.”

A week later, Harrell gave a fatal blow to Erica’s head by kicking her. The door was kept closed and the couple alleged the toddler was just sick. Erica wasn’t moved from the room for two days. However, police later found her decapitated body at an intersection in Kansas City. Even more days later, they found her head, which authorities said was cut off with a pair of hedge clippers. Before identifying the body as Green’s, they named her “Precious Doe.”
Michelle and Harrell Johnson, who both had outstanding warrants, were convicted of second-degree felony murder and endangering the welfare of a child.

After a slew of merciless killings, Jeffrey Dahmermet his own fate at the hands of a fellow inmate. Dahmer had been sentenced to fifteen life sentences, serving time beside Christopher Scarverin 1992.

Scarver told the New York Post this year that Dahmer would play with his food and cut it up into so-called “body parts,” then smear ketchup across them to make them look bloodied.
Critics suspect Scarver was aided in Dahmer’s attack because the cannibal was left isolated without his special guards. Scarver said the guards helped him but did not elaborate any further.

The DC Snipers
John Allen Muhammad (41) and Lee Boyd Malvo (17) went on a killing spree around the DMV in 2002, per CNN. Most of their shootings targeted civilians in public places like shopping center parking lots, gas stations or school zones. Then, one day they left a clue at the scene of one of their crimes: a “Death” tarot card reading “Call me God.”
Their motives were never clear. Some suspected Muhammad wanted revenge after his ex-wife and children left him. Others believed they were involved with Al Qaeda, given the fresh wound of the 9/11 attacks.
The killings began earlier that year, then became more frequent during the month of October. A total of 17 people died and another ten who were shot survived their gunshot wounds. Eventually, the two were arrested. Muhammad was sentenced to death and executed in 2009. Malvo remains in prison on a life sentence, though he’s been ordered for a resentencing now that he is an adult, per WUSA9 News.

Murder of Tupac Shakur
Who’s responsible for the murder of Tupac Shakur is one of the most heated debates next to the conspiracy theories questioning whether he’s alive and hiding in Cuba or not. Reports say that in September of 1996, Shakur was in Las Vegas walking through a hotel when he ran into a mutual enemy, Orlando Anderson. After the two squabbled in the lobby, Anderson was left beaten on the floor.
The last we ever saw of the rapper was on the hotel’s security camera footage, furiously walking through the lobby, per Las Vegas Review Journal. Two hours later, Shakur was sitting at a red light on Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, with his Death Row posse and Suge Knight beside him when a car pulled up to his BMW and rained fire. He suffered two bullets to the chest, one to the thigh and one to the arm. His succumbed to his injuries six days later.
Because his shooter was never captured, many began to speculate about who really was involved. Given Death Row’s coast-to-coast rap beef with Bad Boy Records, many music fans and living room sleuths theorized Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs may have put a hit out on Pac. Others believed Suge Knight was to blame. LA residents settled on plain ol’ gang violence between the Bloods and the Crips. None of these theories have been proven to be true.

Murder of The Notorious B.I.G.
Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls aka The Notorious B.I.G. died in an eerily similar way to his Hip-Hop competitor, Tupac Shakur. According to Fox 5 New York, Wallace was leaving a party in Los Angeles when he was fatally shot during a drive-by in March of 1997. Given that Shakur had died just the year before, the public believed the tensions between Death Row and Bad Boy Records had finally boiled over.
For years, authorities couldn’t pinpoint who was Wallace’s killer, making this yet just another cold case. However, the conspiracy that Suge Knight was the evil mastermind behind it all became more convincing after sealed federal records were revealed. An FBI agent told The New York Postthat the shooter was Amir Muhammad, a member of the Nation of Islam, who was hired by Knight as a hitman. Despite the agent’s claim, none of this has been officially confirmed and the case is still an open mystery.

Central Park Jogger Case
Though the group of teens did not commit the crime they were convicted of, this story goes down in history as a horrid example of racial bias in the criminal justice system.
In 1989, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray and Yusef Salaam were just teens when they were arrested in connection to the rape and assault of a white woman jogger in Central Park. After being intimidated and manipulated by several crooked NY police officers, the teens falsely confessed to the crime, which landed them between six and 13 years in prison, per the New York Times. The woman, who survived the attack, was unable to provide helpful details in identifying who her attacker was.
The media scandalized their names and made them out to be animals, gang members and monstrous criminals. While serving time in an adult facility, Wise encountered the real culprit, Matias Reyes, who later confessed to the crime in 2002. Reyes was already a convicted murderer and serial rapist at the time.
The five were recently exonerated and awarded a $41 million settlement; although the NYPD still deny their role in the wrongful conviction.

Death of Kalief Browder
In 2010, Browder was accused of minor theft and, at the tender age of 16, sent to Rikers Island for three years. He maintained his innocence and eventually his case was dropped and he was released. However, his experiences while at the jail drove him into a dark mental state, per The New Yorker.

Two of his years at Rikers were spent in solitary confinement. He recalled being targeted and abused by officers. Surveillance footage of him in jail also showed him being randomly bum rushed by guards and other inmates. Browder made multiple suicide attempts while at Rikers, and also after his release three months later. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital where he was reported to have experienced paranoia. As the horrors of the jail system were being exposed to the public, Browder was deteriorating mentally. In 2015, he died by suicide. New York City paid his estate $3.3 million in a lawsuit settlement.

The Chicago Strangler
Over a span of 27 years, Black women in Chicagohave been found beaten or strangled to death and their killers have never been found. According to Fox 32 Chicago, their bodies were often discarded in buildings or dumpsters and some were even dismembered.
Between 1999 and 2018, 75 women were found strangled to death, reports say. Police have only solved 24 of the cases, one fairly recently. A woman was discovered inside an abandoned building, chained up by a man she said sexually assaulted her. A passerby heard her cries for help and was able to get the police to rescue her. Although Joel Cammon was arrested and charged, it’s unclear if he’s connected to any of the other strangulation murders.
The Murder Accountability Project began tracking these cases alongside activists who called out the Chicago Police Department for its inability to catch what they assume is a serial killer. The families of the missing and murdered women have held multiple rallies calling for greater action to be taken to bring their loved ones home.

“State of Shock”
Season 8, Episode 4 First US Airdate: October 1, 1994
The Turtles battle a super-soldier who transforms into a fearsome electric mantis.
“State of Shock” is the fourth episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season eight, but only the third to make it to air: in production terms, “Cyber-Turtles” should sit between this and “Wrath of the Rat King”, but will end up being the penultimate episode of the season. As Turtlethon adheres to broadcast rather than production order, we’ll cover that adventure in a few weeks.
A group of ninjas are seen attempting to infiltrate the out-of-town Emeryville Power Station, but the Turtles arrive to stop them. The two parties do battle atop a high platform, with our heroes quickly gaining the upper hand. Before retreating, one of the raiders threatens that the Turtles will “face the fury of Megavolt” for interfering with their plans.
The Turtles return to their Lair, having recovered a sheet of seemingly indecipherable plans from one of the ninjas. On TV, Vernon continues Channel 6’s propaganda campaign against the green teens, claiming this latest in a series of attempted raids must have been their doing. Using equipment in his workshop, Donatello determines that one of the terms in the document is “Emeryville”, while another is “Green Power”, a likely indicator that a renewable energy firm of the same name will be the next target of the ninja gang.
While on their way to cut the ninjas off at the pass, the Turtles run into a military team on a mission to capture them. The group is led by Colonel Wesley Knight of the US Armed Forces, who quickly has his men open fire. The Turtles swiftly disarm Knight’s group before vanishing into the darkness.
Heading up to the surface, the Turtles check in with April via Turtlecom, informing her of the group that opened fire upon them, whose equipment bore the name “Dark Water”. April explains that Dark Water trains the army’s top commandoes and manufactures hi-tech weaponry, information revealed to April as she once dated one of the organisation’s scientists. Moments later, the Turtles spot the same ninjas from the Emeryville raid attacking Green Power’s site, and head off to stop them. Burne Thompson receives reports of the ongoing ninja raid and, convinced this is the work of the Turtles, assigns April to cover the story.
The Turtles follow the ninjas to their hideout, an abandoned airport hangar, and watch from the sidelines as the group report to their master, a villain sporting robotic armour named Megavolt. The crime boss is seen powering up by attaching a high-capacity battery to himself, but the Turtles have a plan: rather than battling this new enemy directly they attempt to infiltrate the operation by offering their services to him directly, on the basis that they’re said to be “the city’s most notorious criminals”.
Megavolt tests the abilities of the Turtles in battle, firing bolts of energy at them that transform into bladed metal projectiles in mid-air. The team refuse to back down, and this display of bravery impresses the villain enough for him to allow them to join the operation. Meanwhile, April interviews a police officer outside of the Green Power building, and notes that a broken sai blade found at the scene of the crime appears to be Raphael’s.
Accompanied by a group of Megavolt’s ninjas, the Turtles are taken to the premises of a furniture company to perform their next raid. Unaware that they’ve tripped a silent security alarm, the unit retrieves a super-concentrated energy source stored inside. Upon leaving the building Colonel Knight and his unit confront the Turtles once more, as well as Megavolt’s ninjas. Meanwhile April arrives on the scene to film the robbery and is horrified to see her old friends seemingly working with the criminal gang. A smoke bomb allows both Megavolt’s team and the Turtles to escape, with Knight vowing to capture his prey next time they meet.
The Turtles watch as the energy source is handed over to Megavolt, who agrees to reveal what his deal is. The villain explains that he was “their top fighter, skilled in all the martial arts... but then, they did this to me”. It’s unclear at this point who the “they” he’s referring to is, but Megavolt removes his helmet to reveal the results of the experiments performed on him. The Turtles are horrified by his uh... baldness and some stitches, I guess? He also has yellow teeth and seems to only be able to see out of a single red eye. Okay, he doesn’t look great, but this is tame stuff compared to some of the villains the Turtles have encountered even just recently; on the ugly scale he’s no Drakus and not in the same league as The Great Charg.
Absorbing the energy source – which we’re told also belonged to “them”, I guess the inference is that Dark Water and Wesley Knight’s unit were secretly operating out of the furniture store – the villain declares that Alex Winter is no more, now there is only Megavolt, as he transforms into a giant mantis creature. (Yes, his name is Alex Winter, like the actor from the Bill & Ted movies. I can only assume neither David Wise or anyone at MWS picked up on the fact that there was a notable Hollywood personality who shared the same name as this character, otherwise they’d likely have changed it. Still, it could be worse, at least the disfigured mantis guy didn’t get named Keanu Reeves.)
The Turtles attempt to restrain Megavolt but are unable to stop his rampage, and he soon winds up marching off towards the city. Noting that the name of the furniture store (“DW Incorporated”) suggests a possible connection with Dark Water, they check in with April via Turtlecom hoping to get more information. Now convinced that the Turtles are criminals, April refuses to help them. Before the team can plead their innocence, Colonel Knight’s unit emerges to confront them. Left with no obvious way to resolve their current predicament, Leonardo orders his team to surrender.
We get a brief Irma cameo so that April has someone to bounce dialogue off, wondering if she should agree to investigate the connection between Megavolt and Dark Water, as helping the Turtles would mean she’s providing assistance to a group of criminals. Burne barges in and orders April to cover Megavolt’s ongoing rampage.
Wesley Knight interrogates the Turtles, and becomes incensed upon hearing them mention Megavolt’s old identity. “Alex Winter was the greatest agent Dark Water ever had! He made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.” Refusing to hear that the former member of the organisation could have turned to villainy, Knight storms out of the room. The Turtles then receive a call from April, who having investigated the connection between Winter and the group apologises for assuming they had become criminals.
As Megavolt continues to cause chaos throughout the city, April arrives to confront the Colonel, handing him documentation regarding Dark Water’s “Operation Ultima”, a project intended to create the ultimate military warrior. Unbeknownst to Knight, Alex Winter was the subject of this failed experiment, left with super powers in the aftermath but also hideously deformed. Now Winter is approaching the organisation’s research facility intent on revenge. Upon hearing this, Knight agrees to let the Turtles go for now.
Megavolt arrives at Dark Water’s labs and enables a time bomb as Colonel Knight and his unit arrive to confront him. Also on the scene are the Turtles, who emerge with April in their van. Figuring that his power is also his greatest weakness, our heroes goad Winter into attacking them near a water tower. After being doused, he returns to his normal form. Meanwhile Donatello and Michaelangelo use the Turtle Van’s launcher to send the bomb into the sky, preventing it from doing any damage as it detonates.
Later, as the now-powerless Winter is restrained by the police, Colonel Knight admits that the Turtles aren’t the menaces he once thought. While his orders are still to capture them, off the record he agrees to offer his aid to them in the future. Once his back is turned the team soon vanish, escaping into the night in their van.
“State of Shock” sees the series grappling with a thorny issue: having re-established Shredder as a legitimate villain who has created so much upheaval for the team over the last three episodes, how will things proceed when he’s not around? It’s hard to imagine the likes of last season’s Horatio Stressbar, who himself felt like a throwback to antagonists from an earlier era of the show, working within the current format. What hampers Megavolt from working, I feel, is debuting so soon after Drakus, another hideous bad guy hiding under a mask with a sob story about how he was screwed over in the past. Tony Jay provides the character with an air of gravitas that feels wasted on this one-and-done foe, but we’ll see him return to voice a more significant character down the road.
This adventure teases that the Turtles will have further run-ins with Colonel Knight and Dark Water, but... no, this is as far as it goes. Once again, we have a situation where perhaps David Wise wanted to leave the door open for these characters and concepts to be used again in the future, but nothing ever came of it. What we wind up with, then, is effectively the first filler episode of the season, the Red Sky incarnation of TMNT still figuring out how things will work but running in place as it does so. The next adventure we cover will see the show take on something more ambitious, as a mini story-arc commences with “Cry H.A.V.O.C.!”

New British comedy TV series from 2020: BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Dave, Amazon, Netflix
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
2020 in British TV comedy brought us Maisie Williams as a kickass survivalist in a pickle, and a new parenting comedy from the hugely talented Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison starring Martin Freeman.
To add to that, there was also a fresh batch of comedians playing exaggerated versions of themselves in self-penned sitcoms, including Katherine Ryan, Mae Martin, Sara Pascoe, Kayleigh Llewellyn, Lucy Beaumont and Jon Richardson.
Here’s the skinny on all those new shows and more. Here’s what arrived in 2019, and here are the new British TV dramas that arrived in 2020.
Breeders
After their excellent 2014 relationship comedy Trying Again, Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell (Veep, The Thick Of It) teamed up on a new series, this time about the trials of parenthood. Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard played parents in this ten-part half-hour comedy, a co-production between Sky in the UK and FX in the US. Watch the first trailer here.
Bumps
Available to stream on BBC iPlayer
A Comedy Playhouse commission for BBC One, Bumps comes from Psychobitches and Tracey Ullman’s Show writer-actor Lucy Montgomery (pictured) and The Life Of Rock With Brian Pern‘s Rhys Thomas. The half-hour pilot is a modern family comedy that centres on Amanda Redman’s character Anita, a divorcee in her sixties with two grown-up kids, who decides to have a third baby with the help of an egg and sperm donor. Playing Anita’s daughter Joanne is Lisa McGrillis (behind the brilliantly dim and tactless but very sweet Kelly on Mum), who discovers she’s pregnant at the same time as her mother.
Code 404
After 2019’s pilot, Sky ordered six episodes of this sci-fi comedy starring Daniel Mays (Line Of Duty, Vera Drake) and Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire, The Virtues), written by Mongrels and Not Going Out’s Daniel Peak. It’s a buddy cop drama set in the near future, which sees crime-fighting duo DI John Major (Mays) and DI Roy Carver (Graham) first separated, then reunited thanks to the wonders of modern science. Series two is on its way.
Feel Good
Stand-up Mae Martin co-wrote her autobiographically inspired six-episode series with Joe Hampson, which formerly went by the working title Mae and George and is now called Feel Good. It aired on E4 in the UK and Netflix around the world, and follows Martin’s life as a comedian and recovering addict, and the complications of her new relationship with girlfriend George. Friends’ Lisa Kudrow guest stars. A second series is on the way.
Hitmen
Comedy double act Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins get in on the Killing Eve game as contract killers in this new Sky series. Unlike Villanelle though, these two are decidedly unsmooth operators. Their hits are, according to the press release, “inevitably derailed by incompetence, bickering, and inane antics.” Sherlock’s Amanda Abbington co-stars, along with Francis Barber and Johnny Vegas. Series two is on the way.
In My Skin
Kayleigh Llewellyn’s autobiographically inspired 2018 pilot is now a four-part comedy series for the BBC. It’s the raw but ultimately uplifting story of teenager Bethan’s attempts to conceal from her schoolfriends a chaotic homelife with a mother sectioned in a mental health facility and a dad in the Hell’s Angels. Here’s a clip from the Comedy Slice to whet your appetite.
Intelligence
Available to stream on Sky and NOW TV
Last year saw Rob Lowe in Lincolnshire, now prepare for David Schwimmer in Cheltenham. The Friends actor and director starring in a six-part Sky One comedy as a “maverick NSA agent” working in the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters. He’s joined by series writer Nick Mohammed, in the role of an inept computer analyst tasked with tackling cyber-crime. Series two is on the way.
Kate And Koji
Filmed in Herne Bay, Kent, this six-episode ITV comedy stars Brenda Blethyn as Kate, the owner of a seaside café who strikes up a friendship with asylum seeker Koji, played by Jimmy Akingbola. Those two are joined by The Inbetweeners’ Blake Harrison, playing Kate’s nephew, and Meera Syal as the local GP in a timely modern story with a heart.
King Gary
Available to stream on BBC iPlayer
Murder In Successville and Action Team’s Tom Davis and James De Frond teamed up again to write and direct prime time BBC One sitcom King Gary, which debuted in 2020 and was swiftly recommissioned for a second series. You may have caught the pilot episode, which aired over Christmas 2018, introducing Davis’ character – London builder Gary King, a man-child who loves his family, his suburban community, and really loves a B.B.Q – his parents played by The Fast Show’s Simon Day and Doctor Who’s Camille Coduri, and his unforgettable wife Terri, played by the very funny Laura Checkley.
Meet The Richardsons
Airing on Dave and available to stream weekly on UK TV Play
Married comedians Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont starred as heightened versions of themselves in Meet The Richardsons for Dave, written by Beaumont and Car Share’s Tim Reid. Inspired by Beaumont’s appearances on Richardsons’ Ultimate Worrier series for Dave, the series comically documents the couple’s parenting and relationship woes.
Mister Winner
Following a successful Comedy Playhouse pilot, Spencer Jones (Upstart Crow) returned as the hapless Leslie Winner for a six-episode series on BBC One. Joining Jones will be Shaun Williamson and Lucy Pearman, in a loveable comedy about “an eternally optimistic klutz with his heart in the right place”. If you’ve yet to see Jones’ excellent BBC iPlayer short series The Mind Of Herbert Clunkerdunk, get involved without delay.
My Left Nut
Available to stream on BBC iPlayer
Coming to BBC Three is an autobiographically inspired three-part comedy-drama from Irish writers Michael Patrick and Oisin Kearney, adapted from their acclaimed stage play. Starring Sinead Keenan (Little Boy Blue, Being Human) with newcomer Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe, it’s the story of a Belfast teenager who discovers a lump on his testicle but finds himself unable to tell those around him. A relatable, entertaining teen comedy with an important healthcare message.
Out of Her Mind
An established name on screen and the live circuit, comedian Sara Pascoe is the latest comic to write and star in her own sitcom (joining the ranks of Roisin Conaty, Aisling Bea, Josh Widdicombe and more). Her as-yet untitled series is being produced for BBC Two by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s production company, Stolen Picture. It’s about “family, relationships and biology,” according to the press release, and will combine eccentric characters with surreal interludes and factual segments. Read about the best Netflix stand-up specials here.
Sandylands
Following on from 2019’s Isle of Wight-set family comedy The Cockfields, Gold has commissioned a second three-part original sitcom. This one’s also set on the UK coast, and tells the story of a successful Londoner who returns to her home town and reconnects with old friends and old crushes when her local businessman father disappears at sea. Sanjeev Bhaskar, David Walliams, Sophie Thompson, Hugh Bonneville and Natalie Dew star.
Semi-Detached
The pilot episode for comedy Semi-Detached, about a hapless fortysomething aired in January 2019, followed by a full series. It was written by actors David Crow and Oliver Maltman and boasted a strong comedy cast including Lee Mack, Ellie White, Samantha Spiro, Clive Russell and Patrick Baladi. The twist with this one is that all the action unfurls in real time.
The Duchess
In addition to her Netflix stand-up specials, comedian Katherine Ryan made a six-part autobiographical comedy for the streaming service. Though a familiar face on screen, this marks the first scripted series Ryan has written and executive-produced. In it, she plays “a fashionable disruptive single mother living in London”, inspired by Ryan’s own experience raising her daughter in the capital after moving here from her native Canada.
The First Team
Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, aka The Inbetweeners creators, have written a six-part half-hour sitcom for BBC Two. Formerly under the working title of Afternoons, it’s now called The First Team and details the off-pitch adventures of three Premier League footballers playing for a fictional side, “three young men who just happen to have a very stressful job in the public eye,” according to the writers. The cast includes Arrested Development‘s Will Arnett as the team’s eccentric American chairman, alongside Theo Barklam Biggs, Shaquille Ali-Yebuah, Jack McMullen, Jake Short and Chris Geere.
The Kemps: All True
Remember how much everybody loved that Bros doc? Well now BBC Four comedy is planning to capture that same lightning in a bottle with mockumentary The Kemps: All True, following the travails of another pair of pop star brothers in Spandau Ballet’s Gary and Martin Kemp. The one-off comedy from Brian Pern‘s Rhys Thomas will track the brothers as they record a new studio album. Read more about it here at the BBC.
The Trouble With Maggie Cole
Stream episodes weekly on ITV Hub
Commissioned in March 2019 by ITV under the working title Glass Houses is a six-part hour-long comedy series starring Dawn French, Mark Heap, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Vicki Pepperdine and more. It’s about the aftermath of a loose-lipped radio interview with French’s Maggie, the village gossip who spills her neighbours’ secrets on air. It comes written by Shameless and Benidorm’s Mark Brotherhood and aired on ITV1 in March.
Truth Seekers
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s latest collaboration is a comedy horror series for Amazon Prime Video. Filming began in September 2019 on Truth Seekers, which follows a group of paranormal investigator hobbyists who film their ghost sighting escapades for the online community, and stumble into some very strange business that could end life as we know it. There’s a great comedy cast including Pegg and Frost, including Susan Wokoma, Julian Barratt, Samson Kayo, Morgana Robinson, Kate Nash, Kevin Eldon and Malcolm McDowell.
Two Weeks To Live
Written by Cheat’s Gaby Hull, this six-episode Sky comedy is the story of misfit Kim, a young girl raised to survive in the wilderness, who re-enters society on a secret mission to honour her dead father’s memory. Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams plays Kim, who becomes entangled in a prank-gone-wrong plot involving gangsters, a bag of cash and the police. With Kim’s survival skills, don’t expect her to come quietly…

Here are all the forthcoming British TV dramas on their way in 2020.

OneNETnews INVESTIGATES: An Online Personality of Cartoons and Anime enrages with massive bigotry in Arizona, forcing small YouTubers for a permanent cessation [EXCLUSIVE]
(Prepared by Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / Radyo Bandera Patrol #1's news presenter, News Editor and Investigative News Reporter of OneNETnews)
TRIGGER WARNING: The following investigative news report contains a higher dose of severe profanity and entertainment related issues. Our news organization of OneNETnews has a STRICT zero-tolerance policy and we do not promote, aggressively attacking or fully condone to expose, nor promoting the hate in a political matter. Read our IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER in this news article below, mga-Ka-Bandera.
PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- A suspected content creator on YouTube consistently outcried their own video platform, known for his reactions in most cartoon episodes of "The Loud House" and selected Anime series on his YouTube channel, which was now being terminated because of the continual unfolding of excessive hate speech.
Deon James Mucker Garth, a 29 y/o male resident of Arbor Creek Apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, United States of America (U.S.A.) attacked online users across various platforms, branding them as having dangerous cases of racism and intellectual outburst, among other things, and was independently noted in their specific resources. What started out as an example of all cyber harassment turns into a veritable crisis.
An internet sleuth by the name "CartoonShi" creates content related to cartoons, culture, entertainment, and mostly exposes hate. He has uploaded numerous motion pictures for Movies or Television associated with Anime and Cartoons, reading their themes, plots and social issues.
However, Garth's behavior and actions have crossed all limits of decency, leading to the termination of his YouTube channel due to hate speech and online abuse.
Garth's case was caused widespread criticism from the online community, with several YouTubers and online users calling for his arrest and appropriate punishment. He was now become a suspect of his own hatred, with his own mental and physical health being significantly impacted by the constant excess hate he was being subjected to.
The excessive hate has made Garth paranoid and fearful of leaving his home and interacting with people physically in person, but not in the online world. Per medical news report of Medical News Today that the Cyberbullying can have a variety of negative effects on a person's health like Garth, including depression, anxiety and even suicide. An impact on his mental and physical health has led to Agoraphobia, an anxiety disease that causes an irrational fear of open or public places.
Despite repetitious appeals, Twitter replies and Change.org petitions, the management and staff of YouTube in San Bruno, California, U.S.A. have failed to take any significant measures to terminate Garth's channel for inexistence. Because of its mass flagging of their channel in the late-2010s... The video platform itself on YouTube is sure likely to be a complete ignorance, leading to a bitter resentment as victims among both online users and streaming viewers.
Furthermore, the actions of cause for Garth can extremely cause bodily and intellectual violations, leading to a possibility of a Cyber Libel, under the Republic Act #10175: Section 4.c-4 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, per relations of Articles #353 and #355 or The Revised Penal Code in the Philippines; and a reference of House Bill #129: Section 4 or The Online Social Media Membership Accountability Act of 2022, as signed by a murderous mastermind & suspended Negros Oriental lawmaker representative Arnulfo "Arnie" Alipit Teves Jr. Some international authorities such as the Philippine National Police - Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Phoenix Police Department (PPD) have acknowledged complaints against Garth from the anonymous crime tip.
As we all learn on our digital and investigative news team of OneNETnews, Garth has a history of committing to and spreading Asian and Mexican hate to small or medium YouTubers (including Filipinos and Overseas Filipino Workers worldwide). Xenophobic and extremism on Garth is very evitably strong.
Per our writing, Garth refused a public statement or a virtual interview via Zoom or Google Meet in video conferencing at the time of the aforesaid investigation. His original YouTube channel officially terminated due to a breach of the platform's community guidelines for hate speech to their online victims themselves.
In conclusion, his actions have caused widespread criticism from the online community. It is now time for the online community to come together to restrict the spreading of hate speech, cyber abuse and intellectual persecution withinside the virtual realm.
Garth's case serves as a wake-up call, to be more mindful of their words and actions on YouTube -- which was a parent company of both Google and Alphabet Inc.
A big special thanks to our newly Mass Communication news intern in Bailley, Texas, U.S.A. as Mitch Williams from Glitch Techs joins at OneNETnews, for sending us a fresh news tip!

Hey just got a question cause I've been really concerned for a while but why do you think s12 ratings been so low? I'm very scared BBC might just say "fuck it, this isn't working" and pull the plug on Jodie which would make me hella sad. Think it's because of the time of year? Early January + waiting for long time? Do you think she can pull up with the cyber men episodes and other ambitious ideas they still got in store? I don't want 13 to go if she's gon be replaced again by a man :c
honestly, I have no idea and it's scaring me as well. 3 episodes in and it's scraping by 5 million (1 week consolidated figures), this is what it was like at the end of series 10 (which in itself is an absolute crime). I mean, nowadays, overnight ratings don't matter too much, but seeing that the show is gaining just about a million more viewers in a week is concerning to me as well. I hate seeing that already, series 12 is gonna be the lowest rated series of all who basically and it doesn't deserve that at all. I don't think it's just the fact that the Doctor is a woman, (here we go), I'm placing it on chibnall.
I understand what chibnall is trying to do, honestly. have the fun, non deadly adventures in her first series, get to know the characters and then we get into the nitty gritty, but I dunno why, but his writing just hasn't been strong. he's good with broadchurch and torchwood, but his episodes in series 11 have been the weakest eps. I think, to a lot of people, it just ain't Who anymore and that saddens me. Chibnall should have done better with series 11. I really liked series 11, but it should have been stronger. by half way through the series, it had lost half its viewers, so loads of people tuning in have missed the best episodes of series 11. I think a tonal mix of high stakes and low stakes would have helped series 11 and series 12.
I also think it's down to advertisement. series 11's advertisement? Great. amazing! had series 11 ads popping up on YouTube, billboards, SDCC, NYCC, Build, loads of interviews, lots of hype. but series 12? I have only seen one (1) series 12 advert live on TV and that was for Orphan 55. yeah, I don't watch TV a lot, but I've never seen an ad for the whole of series 12 on TV. with series 11, I saw loads of ads on TV. I remember seeing an advert for The Ghost Monument on TV and I remember seeing loads of adverts for series 11 as a whole. they also had a teaser in the middle of a football game (I think it was in the middle of the world Cup), so it obviously got loads of attention.
also, another thing, the 'next time' trailers for series 12. they're shit. plain and simple. they are shit. literally 15 seconds at the very end of an episode and then we wait like, a day to get a longer one that's like 20 seconds. the next time trailers used to be really long, like at least 45 seconds to a minute long. I think they used to play just before the end credits started so that you don't miss what's gonna happen next, now, they're at the very, very end of the episode, by then, people will have switched over to other channels, or just switched off their TV. I just wish they would prioritise advertising, that's how you get people's attention, y'know? yeah, we had the Judoon in Victoria Station, but that's honestly been the biggest thing. it's just, there's something missing
honestly, series 12 is so good and doesn't deserve these ratings. series 10 didn't deserve the ratings that it got and apart from series 4, the best series are getting paid absolute dust and its just not fair.
will they go back to a man? I don't know, I personally don't give a fuck if the doctor is a man or a woman, at the end of the day, they're still the Doctor. it's just the horrendous bigotry from some of the fans, which is weird, as they are fans of,,, Doctor Who.
also, I think it's also the Sunday slots. I'm not a fan of the Sunday slots. I'm always tired afterwards and I've got school the next day, so the euphoria of knowing Doctor Who is on only lasts for a short while. Saturdays work a lot better imo, it's prime time for Doctor Who and why Chibnall moved it to Sundays, ill never know. I have no idea why he done it and why he thought it was a good idea. People would have less time on a Monday to catch up, rather say than a Sunday. I think that's the biggest thing, Sunday is really not great. for 54 years, Doctor Who had been on Saturday's and this sudden change to Sunday just makes no sense at all.
what I'll say here, anon, is that I don't think you should worry too much. yes, it's worrying, I don't like how the viewing figures have dropped from last series. maybe the year long wait did have something to do with this, but they should have advertised it better. overnights don't matter like they used to. back in like, 2008, we weren't able to record shows and it would only be on iPlayer for a short amount of time. People nowadays watch TV differently. People would watch it on catch up, they'd watch it later with friends, or they'd even wait until the whole thing is out to watch it. 28 day consolidated viewing figures are the ones that matter most, I'm not sure what it's been for Spyfall yet, I think we'll find that out tomorrow, but don't lose hope. my dad keeps saying that the BBC care too much about Doctor Who, just to axe it like that, they definitely won't just cancel it straight out.
#there's no doubt that the overnights for Sunday are gonna be under 4 million#that's just the way it goes#throughout the series#each episode gets less and less viewers#this is why Chibnall is my least favourite showrunner#not to be like a nmd#but he's killing the show#putting it to Sundays#giving shit advertising#shit next time trailers#not an amazing first series#I think for series 11#he should have really wowed the audience and not give us 'mediocre' stories#cause let's face it#they don't stand out that much#I like series 11#but the episodes just weren't strong enough for such an important series#I get that he has a plan#but he could have done it a bit better#but it's time to face it#doctor who is no longer in its prime#like you said#2008 - 2013 was doctor who's best years#but from then#it's been dying out#I hate being so pessimistic about it#but it's true#doctor who#13th doctor#chris chibnall

[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
A Human SCP-079 Fanfic
Warnings: Violence, Alcoholism, Brain damage/trauma, Police brutality
Description: Zero is a reclusive computer science major, floating by in college with the help of vodka by his side. His only human interaction seems to be from his distant father, who abandoned him as a child but now is trying to make a bit of effort to be back in his life. And after a failed virus he sends to a Cray supercomputer gets exposed, he is forced to pay for the consequences of his cyber crimes in more ways than one.
During an unnecessarily violent arrest, he suffers a brain injury and anterograde amnesia, damaging his short-term memory. But during his time detained, he meets a violent man with an infamous short-temper, who takes a surprising interest in him.
(Read it here on Ao3 or continue below)
Exception On Line 129: Thunderstorms
It didn’t happen like an earthquake, with a low haunting rumble forewarning the land. It didn’t happen like a tornado, lurking like a bane in the sky, until finally making contact with cursed earth. It didn’t happen like lightning, striking fast with devastation but ending as soon as it started.
It happened like a godforsaken thunderstorm on a crystal clear day.
It happened like blotchy silver clouds billowing over a bright cyan sky in seconds. It happened like the claps of thunder ripping the sky in half and causing it to unleash a deafening scream.
It happened, quite simply, out of nowhere.
Wednesday morning is crammed with two back to back university classes, but the rest of the day Zero always had free. And he usually spent his Wednesday afternoon like any other programming or messing around with his algorithm, but this particular afternoon was already off on a bad start as he slammed back another swing of his shitty Popov vodka, already killing nearly half a fifth, and sucking a heavy draw from his fourth cigarette as a lackluster surrogate to a much-needed chaser.
Watching literally whatever was on the first channel when he turned on the television, his focus was really only half on the entertainment; he was more concerned over how many more cigarettes he was going to have to burn through before he killed this bottle. Growing impatient with his ever-so-growing tolerance for alcohol, Zero sloppily pressed the home button of his cellphone laid atop his cluttered coffee table with his cigarette hand, accidentally drizzling a light dusting of ash upon the screen.
Two missed calls from his dad flashed on screen as well as five text messages from him. More importantly, the time showed two thirty-three in the afternoon, about an hour into his drinking. It had started from the first text message his dad sent a couple of hours ago, a soft-hearted request to see him and catch up on how Zero’s life has been.
Too little too late. A creep of anxious tightness swirled in his chest, an instinctual afterburn from the smoulder of his dejected childhood. He nervously chewed at his lower lip ring.
Pretending all he saw on the screen was the time, Zero hungrily sucked the last huff from his cigarette, mentally deciding it should be his last for this session, and snuffed out the last cinders on the overflowing ashtray wedged between two cleared vodka bottles and a stack of last semester’s textbooks, of which now made some real mediocre coasters.
Kicking his feet up on the coffee table, ignoring its pleading creak that even his light weight was a threat with its cheap frame, Zero squeezed his eyes shut and gulped down a few mouthfuls of the vodka, tuning out the background cartoon audio from the television into a meaningless din, ringing ever so softly in his ears.
And then thunder shattered his clear blue skies.
Hefty, booming knocks struck the door of his single-bedroom apartment.
“Lakewood police. We are here to execute an arrest warrant for Zero Novem and have this address on record as his residence. Open up or we will enter with force.” The voice was gruff, and concise, like the lines an overzealous teenage theater kid would practice in their head over and over for the strongest performance. But that’s all it was; a little performance, and it didn’t take more than a second for Zero to realize even through his moderate intoxication that this particular cop took his job way too seriously.
Perhaps too much alcohol was in his system to really spring his mind into full out panic mode, or spare a morsel of thought towards the idea that the arrest warrant was in any way legitimate.
“Officer, ‘shu got the wrong place,” Zero slurred back, louder than he thought he was being, “I couldn’t have done anything wrong if I don’t leave this place for nothin’ but school.”
The honesty was there, but only if but for the fact that Zero hasn’t been anywhere but school, his home, and the grocery store in the last month. Not even a job, thanks to a weekly petty allowance from his dad. And even then, none of his latest ventures outside his home immediately pinged noteworthy in his head.
“Sir, open the door,” the officer replied curtly, his voice immediately overly cautious at the notice that the apartment’s resident was drunk. Maybe that was par for the course with college students, but maybe not so much at half past two in the afternoon.
With an annoyed groan, mind still too cloudy with stormy billows to quite register that there was a chance he could actually be in trouble, Zero pushed off the couch with a calibrating stumble, making sure his feet were feeling firm on the ground before his hands half-heartedly pulled the front of his black t-shirt taut to smooth it out and appear somewhat presentable. After a quick fight with his lower lip ring, as a bit of nerves always giving him the instinct to bite it, he finally unlocked the front door and cracked it ajar, barely poking his head out as to hide the mess of an apartment behind him.
“Can I help you officer?” Almost in a sing-song voice, Zero immediately failed to make himself seem any more sober.
“Zero Novem, you’re under arrest, come out and stand against the wall.” The officer at this point had taken a defensive position, hand already on his gun in its holster, almost like a silent threat. A threat that Zero was too intoxicated to notice, or perhaps even take seriously.
Instead, he chuckled; sloppily, not in any smooth way at all, he gave his head an exaggerated shake left to right. “No, ‘m not, officer that doesn’t make any sense.”
And that’s when the thunder cracked. And by thunder, the officer’s hand smack forth onto the front of the door, forcing the door to slam hard into the adjacent wall in the apartment and sending Zero stumbling back. And perhaps in a more sober state, that stumble wouldn’t have also have sent him onto the ground, dazed when the overzealous cop immediately intruding in.
“The fuck do you think you’re doing!?” Zero immediately hissed at the officer, feeling the sting of the fall zip up and down his back, groaning as he sat up onto the palms of his hands.
The officer reached for Zero’s forearm, presumably to attempt to pull him up and cuff him, but instead his drunken senses were just fast enough to defiantly kick out his leg the second the cop’s hand got close.
And somehow, despite having the coordination of blind kitten at this point, Zero actually landed the weak kick. The officers grunted, more in frustration than any sort of pain, and perhaps that anger inside him boiled a little too close to the brim that he found his own leg pulling back, rearing for a kick of his own.
And without thought, only with anger, the officer sent a steel-toed boot swinging forward.
Perhaps his intent was to just to get Zero into submission. Perhaps he felt undermined, disrespected, and entitled to kick back. Perhaps he’d had a bad morning and this defiant drunk college student was the last thing he wanted to take the time to deal with.
Perhaps the officer just wanted to cuff him up and get back to the station as soon as possible, but that wasn’t going to happen.
When that foot swung down, it cracked down right on the side of Zero’s skull.
Despite appearing thin and frail, a grotesquely loud thud of Zero’s body hit the ground, knocking the back of his head against the hardwood floor and giving his brain an electrifying rattle. But he didn’t even feel the second hit when it came down again; he was already out cold, with a deep gash on the side of his head already gushing out a red halo around his head.
He was going to be riding in the back of an ambulance rather than a police car today.
