TV Show - Princess Weiyoung
Princess Weiyoung is a Chinese TV series that was released in 2016 and directed by Li Huizhu. "Princess Weiyoung'' is a Chinese historical drama series that tells the story of a princess named Feng Xin'er from the Northern Liang Dynasty, who survives a massacre orchestrated by the Chiyun family. She takes on the identity of Li Weiyoung, the daughter of a noble family, to seek revenge and reclaim her rightful place. Through the series, she faces a number of challenges, including romance and political intrigue. The drama is known for its plot, strong performances, and elaborate costumes and sets.

Because this is a Chinese production, the perception the Western world may have of it will be different to non-Western individuals. Relating a bit to Fullbeck’s HAPA project and A Couple in a Cage (Gomez-Pena and Fusco), while Asian-Westerners would take this production well while understanding history and cultural context, Westerners would see it and apply the show production to all Asian-Westerners only. Not applying it to those of mixed descent and only to those who would “look” like the characters on screen. By doing so, they brush off the diversity of those who are from a diverse background and use this to add to the stereotype that all Asians in Asia are dressed the same way, or celebrate the same things. Relative to Fusco and Gomez-Pena’s performance (Couple in a Cage), Westerners would either understand that this is a culture and not the Asian race as a whole, or be quick to accept it and quickly say to the next Asian person that they have “a beautiful culture like in the movies they watch” which excludes mixed descent and minority groups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My selection of this TV series represents the Chinese East-Asian background. While Chinese culture is the most common knowledge, Chinese culture has a lot of diversity to it as well. This TV show takes place between the Northern and Southern dynasties in China, which was a time of cultural and ethnic diversity. The setting provides a backdrop for discussion on how historical dramas represent complex ethnic backgrounds of China - including the Han Chinese and minorities like the Xianbei people.
We are able to see the main character (Xin’er who becomes Princess Weiyoung) portrayed as a character of mixed ethnicity. She is a princess from Xianbei who adopts the Han Chinese identity. This displays the blending of cultures as well as the challenges faced by individuals of mixed heritage in maintaining their cultural identity while assimilating into another culture. Diversity can be found through clothing, language, and customs depicted throughout the show for their authenticity and representation of different ethnic groups. The global popularity of "Princess Weiyoung" highlights the cross-cultural appeal of Chinese dramas. It invites discussions about how Chinese media is received internationally and how cultural products can serve as a bridge for cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. While the series is in Mandarin, its international distribution involves translation and sub titles which can touch on language barriers and small details that can be lost in translation.

rannisuta replied to your post: I need to ask, is it really necessary for Sherlock...
i mean honestly in this situation there’s really no other way?? This is an exclusively Wato-Sherlock ordeal: Sherlock is the only person who could find the specs, Wato the only person in Akira’s cult who has the background with Syria to take the nuke there. And Wato is the only way to manipulate Sherlock, Sherlock the only person who could shake Wato out of her brainwashed state even temporarily.
Sherlock understands this, which is why she set up the meeting to see Wato and take her back, and set up the Fall to kill Akira. She didn’t kill herself - she’s not stupid - she was the only one who could be put in that position.
while sherlock’s definitely versed in the art of murders, i didn’t feel for one moment she came there with homicidal intent (or else, why ask inspector reimon to help on the rooftop, itself?) per se. sure, she’s pissed af at that psycho fraud. yet, at the end of the day, she’s still just your friendly prepared consulting detective, covering all the ways the exchange might veer to, plus or minus unaccounted variables.
you’re right, though, the writing of this show understands that the fundamental element of it all is watolock. even if i answered the anon ask by listing down what she ~could have done~ to prevent what happened (i.e. miss thing buying into that decoy usb, etcetera), it truly was designed to be essentially about sara shelly and wato confronting what they mean to each other.
and bless their gay hearts for doing what they did.

Mariko also said “as long as I exist she will only listen to me”, so Sherlock knew she had to die, and there was maybe some twisted humor by Sherlock who was accused of throwing the virus girl down from the roof to choose this specific method.

and now, she’s no more. hubris is such an unforgiving bitch.

Episode 27 of The Princess Weiyoung (which I have put off watching for… a year now, but im finally getting through it) and it’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for.
Huge spoilers but i just need to get it out of my system, read if you want.
I can say—have been saying, for about twelve episodes—that Li Changru and Prince Nan’an are the best characters with the most compelling story and I am watching this to the end for them specifically.
Like, gods, I know it won’t happen, but I want this power couple to come out on top so bad. I already want the two leads dead just for the fun of it, bcs they have survives way longer than they should have. Give my san-xiaojie here limelight right now or I’ll gonna stab someone.
I know that “What will you do if Li Weiyiung becomes a threat?” “The strangle fig kills everything in its path” was foreshadowing. Li Changru will become an antagonist. Li Weiyoung will ultimately win no matter what.
I don’t care though. In my ideal world, that was never the ending.
(Also SHIT Chiyun Nan is gorgeous someone hold me back before I start rooting for him too. He’s the worst. Nothing like my beloved Prince Nan’an.)

drop it and don’t look back, the male lead got even worse by the end. i hate this drama. i’m planning to watch signal too, soon :)
He got worse??? I don’t see how that could be possible but sheesh. Talk about dodging a bullet. 0~0 I’m glad I dropped it when I did. I already like I Hear Your Voice 10x better than Secret Garden, and I’m only 20 mins into the first episode.

changru replied to your post “friday18eo replied to your post “I had no idea that lots of tags...”
tumblr only checks the first 5 tags in a post for tracking, so just put the tags you want tracked in first
I’m aware of that. Tags that I mentioned were put after 5 first tags. I meant if the overall number of tags can affect its appearance on the page.

We truly are. I didn’t even think I’d get this invested, but here I am, days later, still feeling all sorts of feelings.

Started Tomb of the Sea. It’s a bigger adjustment than the other DMBJ dramas, because not only are you getting another new cast, you’re also getting a timeskip AND a period where the story doesn’t have a screen adaptation at the same time.
A wise person would probably read the books they bought last week and find the translations of the rest, so they get the available story before continuing, but I stopped believing I have any points in Wisdom long ago.
Wu Lei is fantastic in this (once you get past all the particularly awkward ugly cry-screaming at the beginning), just a great mix of inexperienced kid and jaded survivor. Kid moment below:

And yes that is Wang Haoxuan in the pink hoodie! He’s a better actor than I gave him credit for when watching The Untamed because let’s face it, Xue Yang is a campy scenery-chewing Villain most of the time. But seeing him in another role that’s so different from Xue Yang AND from the way he presents himself outside his acting, Xue Yang is definitely like that on purpose.
So yeah, I’m okay with watching this even though I haven’t finished the books yet. Also I am excited to get to Reboot/Reunion/Whatever it’s called because Mao Xiaotong is also in it and I LOVED her in Princess Weiyoung.
