It takes a long time, and a lot of practice, but eventually Bella learns how to use her sheild to block out all the voices around Edward. She uses it mostly at home so their family can finally have private thoughts and Edward feels more normal. She can also tell when Edward is overwhelmed by the voices in public, and does it for him. At first she has to really concentrate on it so much so that Edward begs her not to strain herself because he’s used to it anyways. But as years stretch into decades it becomes second nature. She can pick and choose who to include and exclude (she only does this by his request), distance, have it so he can hear only her, etc. Edward cites it as further proof that they were made to be together, but Bella just does it because she knows how anxious Edward gets with all the voices in his head, and hates not being able to grant his family privacy from him, and does it as a little gift for him, since he gifted her with everything she ever wanted.
