recent discoveries at bryn celli ddu. a geophysical survey was conducted, recently, around the bryn celli ddu chambered tomb exposing evidence of a cairn cemetery. the 5,000-year-old tomb, a complex dating from the neolithic through to early bronze age, was also found to include the at least four burial cairns and a cluster of prehistoric pits with pottery deposits, worked flint, and tools. its relationship to the summer equinox was tested confirming that the main passage focuses the light along its length and illuminating the entire polygonal stone chamber. in addition 8 new cupmarked rock art on associated outcrops have been identified, using 3d scanning techniques. a dumbbell motif surrounded by singular cup-marks, cup-marks in close formation, possibly in the form of a rosette and one with a large cup-mark. #bryncelliddu # #chamberedtomb #passagetomb #anglesey #wales #solstice #equinox #cupmarks #rockart #prehistoric #prehistory #neolithicpottery #bronzeage #neolithic #tools https://instagr.am/p/B_mi7s5nDZZ/

‘slabs that have toppled from the top of the rock stacks... rest horizontally or vertically against their sides, creating slanting roofed chambers large enough to enter and walk through’. (TILLEY). the proximity of zennor and sperris quoits raises the possibility that these emblematic rock formations were the precursors to these early monuments and were deliberately mimicked by their builders. this possible propped stone sits across two large tor stones creating an effective chamber. it seems that the careful curating of a found or given tor formation was readerly transformed by the judicious addition of a ‘capstone’ propped up at one end by a smaller bolder. ____________ things found; things altered; things mimicked. isn’t this redolent of modernist art practice? #balancingstones, #proppedstones, #loganstone, #torstacks, #tors, #capstone, #chamberedtomb, #dolmen, #quoits, #ancientsites, #ancientwisdom, #ancientmodern, #ancientmodernism, #zennorhill, #westpenwith, #foundobjects, #foundrealty, #alternativereality, #transformedreality, #mimesis, https://instagr.am/p/CSP5sdbo5TD/

bryn cello ddu. petrified monolith? an unusual feature of the chamber, is a large free-standing pillar, not tall enough to have supported the roof, cylindrical in shape, and with a rounded top. the markings on the surface strikingly similar to the bark of a tree and have recently led researchers to believe that this was a petrified tree trunk. this would have meant that it was transported specially to the site there are no deposits on the island or nearby mainland that would generate plant fossils of this type. the stone in fact has been identified as blueschist, a metamorphic rock, formed at high temperature and pressure deep under the earth's surface. petrified wood in contrast, is formed when the original wood material is buried under sediment or volcanic ash and is slowly replaced by silicates. whatever the final outcome of this debate it has clearly been chosen by the tombs builders for its unique appearances for symbolic value. #bryncelliddu #chamberedtomb #passagegrave #themoundinthedarkgrove #stonecircle #rockart #petrifiedwood #symbolic #metamorphicrock #monolith #megalith #angleseyrocks #wales https://instagr.am/p/B_kINdmHwyU/
