Tyndale Life Application Daily Devotion
Devotional for May 1st
Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That's the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed. — Ecclesiastes 10:10
Insight
Trying to do anything without the necessary skills or tools is like chopping wood with a dull ax. If your tool is dull, you should sharpen it to do a better job. Similarly, if you lack skills, you should sharpen them through training and practice. In each situation, sharpening the ax means recognizing where a problem exists, acquiring or honing the skills (or tools) to do the job better, and then going out and doing it.
Challenge
Find the areas of your life where your “ax” is dull, and sharpen your skills so you can be more effective in God's work.

studyblr w/ knives: winter reading challenge
find what I’ve been reading for the prompts and short(ish) reactions below the cut (this post will be updated along the way and is spoiler free)
links: original challenge post || challenge on storygraph || my storygraph
in chronological order, i read these books for the prompts:
recommended by a friend, main character of colour, and enemies to lovers: all for the game (trilogy) by nora sakavic
these books? hello there! i totally get why people get absolutely hyped about them and end up reading nothing but fanfic for years after having read them which would obviously never happen to me heh nooo. i really loved the books and many of the characters and i can’t wait to buy physical copies to annotate and tab the shit out of them!
book about friendship, published more than 5 years ago, lgbtq+ main character, and fantasy or magical realm: the raven cycle (series) by maggie stiefvater
i am still not quite at a point where i can say what That(tm) was about honestly, but i did enjoy the experience a lot! a big learning i took away from this series (sabrina you’ll be happy to hear this) is that sometimes reading with your brain just doesn’t make sense and will only drive you crazy. i think i still enjoy books that are mostly logical over those where you can’t predict anything, but sometimes just reading based on vibes and going with whatever is happening is a nice way to go too
poetry or non-fiction: norwegen der länge nach by simon michalowicz
this is a german book that a friend lend to me. the author writes about his journey from the south of norway all the way to the north cape. it is written incredibly real and authentic. he doesn’t glamorise the hardships he faced and some of the stories he tells made me very emotional. i don’t think he’s a professional writer so there are a few things that.. could be better, but overall i wouldn’t want to go back to not having read this. not being a person who enjoys camping and not having security in where you will stay or what will happen next myself, seeing someone having a route that long but still being aware that there are so many factors impacting the journey was very impressive
#will this be the first challenge that i might actually finish in its timeframe? possibly lmao i am working on it#winter reading challenge#studyblr w/knives reading challenge#studyblr w/ knives reading challenge: mellis reads#reading#books#bookblr#reading time#literature#prompts#knife gang#*mine#uuuh i don't remember tags lmao anyways

NDP Aims To Change Rules To Guarantee Non-Partisan Federal Watchdogs
OTTAWA - New Democratsare proposing a change to parliamentary rules aimed atensuringonly non-partisan individuals becomethe independentwatchdogs who overseecrucial activities such as government spending, ethics, lobbyingand federal elections.
The NDP will use an opposition day Tuesday to move push for a multi-party committeeto give its approval to anyonenominated by the governmentto beanofficer of Parliament.
The motion, whichwill be put to a vote on Wednesday or Thursday, comes as the government is scrambling to repair the damageinflicted byPrime Minister Justin Trudeau's first pick to fill one of the watchdog roles - fellow Liberal Madeleine Meilleur as official languages commissioner.

Meilleur,a former Ontariocabinet minister who hasdonated to both the federal Liberal party and Trudeau's leadership campaign in the past, withdrew her candidacy last week after weeks of fierce criticism about her partisan ties to the government she was supposed to hold to account.
Trudeau was also denounced for failing to properly consult opposition parties about his choice, as legally required for officers of Parliament.
NDP ethics critic Nathan Cullen says his party's proposed change is an "elegant solution" that givesthe government an opportunity to recover from the Meilleur messand ensure it's never repeated.
And it would be simple toimplement immediately - an important consideration given that Trudeau has four other watchdog positions to fill, in addition to the still-empty official languages commissioner's slot, which has already been vacant for six months.
The chief electoral officer's position has alsobeen vacant for six months and Trudeau has extended information commissioner Suzanne Legault's term for six months as he searchesfor a replacement bythe end of the year.
Last week, Trudeaugave a thirdsix-month extension to the terms ofthe ethics and lobbying commissioners, Mary Dawson and Karen Shepherd, both of whomwereset to leavein the next few weeks.
The Meilleur fiasco would have been "a hundred times worse if we were talking about the chief electoral officer or the ethics commissioner," Cullen said in an interview.
"In a sense they've screwed this up but we're fortunate that it wasn't somebody who's running our next elections. So let's not do that again."
The NDP's proposed change would apply to the eight watchdogsgenerally considered officers of Parliament: auditor general, chief electoral officer and commissioners of ethics, lobbying, information, privacy, official languages andpublic sector integrity. It would also apply to the parliamentary budget officer, clerk of the House of Commons and chief parliamentary librarian.
Once the government settled on a nominee for any of those roles, the name would be sent in confidence to a special committee composed of one MP from each of the recognized parties in the Commons and chaired by the deputy Speaker. The committee would deliberate in camera and recommend whether the nomination be rejected or accepted.
A rejection by the committee would be final. An accepted nomination would be put to a vote in the Commons.
Cullen predicted that such a process - done in private by a committee that no one party controlled - would "elevate" the quality of appointments and protect the integrity of the independent watchdog roles.
Whether the Liberals will support the change remains to be seen.
Theyhaveappeared somewhat chastened in the wake of the Meilleur furor, witha senior government sourceacknowledgingto The Canadian Pressthat it's been a challengefinding watchdogs from the small pool of individuals who have the necessaryqualifications and are willing to play a highly visible - and sometimes controversial - role.
As well,Trudeau is expected tosend letters to opposition leaders this week, asking for their advice about who should be consulted on the next ethics and lobbying commissioners and urging them to encourage potential candidates to apply.
Still, as recently as Friday, government House leader Bardish Chagger was continuing to argue that past political involvement shouldn't automatically disqualify an individual from becoming an officer of Parliament.
