Would it be possible to come at your jail and only like work at the chain gang, nothing else?

I would say that just showing up, working on the chaingang, and leaving would be awkward.

First, there would be others participating and therefore "doing time". They would be uniformed and in roleplay. Inserting a random new inmate would be difficult to explain!

In addition, we would need to get you in uniform and put in restraints. Then remove you from the scenario at the end of the day.

It would also mean getting you cleaned up and redressed in civilian clothes at the end of the day.

I also wonder why you would want to miss the experience of eating and sleeping in the cell block and living out the whole role play.

Finally, if you were trying to experience the chain gang alone (which could be argued is therefore no longer a "gang"), would involve finding a time for a solo experience. The only way to guarantee a solo experience would be to pay for a private roleplay, which could be expensive.

BOOTS WAITING FOR THE CHAIN=GANG

Interesting pic. Empty boots already chained together waiting for inmates to step in. But what's the context? Were is it taken? Is it real, or faked? To be real, I think there are at least complicating factors.

First, not every prisoner has the same shoe size. In order to fit, the 'right' prisoners have to be found for the shoes. Second, if you can put the shoes on with the chain already locked on, then you can also take them off again to free yourself. To prevent that, the guards would first have to loosen the thick padlock to tighten the chain. That seems unnecessary extra work.

Or maybe it is faster despite this, because it means less dragging of long heavy chains for the guards, whereas the distance between the prisoners (which of course has to be approximately the same) is already determined in advance and therefore does not have to be measured again every day, and the prisoners can all put on their shoes at the same time?

However the final result would be like this.....

When all inmates of the working-crew have their boots and leg-chains on, they can neatly row up, taking the connecting chains in their hands. Off course on the chain-gang all inmates always are wearing prison stripes, and i think in that case it's always a two-piece.

Thereupon the whole chain-gang crew, securely shackled together, must be brought to the workplace. Outside the prison bus is waiting.

Going inside that bus with your left ankle chained to those of the inmate before and behind you, isn't easy. Mind the step!

After arrival the community work to be done by the chain-gang can be of very different kind. Cleaning the roadsides outside or inside a village of litter on your knees is a very frequently chosen task.

There are moments, when working on the chaingang is rather complicated. When you get entangled in your chains, or whether your chains get caught in the thorny undergrowth, you might stumble.

When work is finished, and the van will bring the inmates back to their home of incarceration, the chain-gang-work crew might look like this. In this case four inmates are shackled together, but if this is standard, isn't clear. Sometimes at least the chain-gang is longer.

Here, at the court of the prison, the bus already waiting in the back-ground, they are shackled together in gangs of five inmates each. And the next pic, after arrival, on the spot, clearly suggests the same.

In this last picture because, because of the tall grass that largely obscures the prisoners' shoes, it is not immediately apparent that they are part of a chain-gang, all five inmates being safely shackled together. But if you zoom in, between the second and third inmate from the left, a piece of chain can clearly be seen, lying around on the ground. And encircling the left ankle of the rightmost inmate as well, including the massive padlock with which it is secured to his leg.

There are padlocks and padlocks. Of course, to prevent lock-picking during rest, they have to be locks with a thick shackle and a serious key (so different from those of the standard handcuffs that are common inside prisons), so that they can neither be easily opened with a paperclip or stuff like that, nor be broken with steel-cutters.

Unfortunately, most photos of chain-gangs are not in high enough resolution to enlarge them so much that you can see exactly which brand of padlock is used in that case. What can be determined, is that it is always a heavy silver-colored padlock, so with a very thick, solid block (much thicker than with standard locks) in which a thick shackle clicks into place. In the two photos of shackled ankles on the left, it is clear that it is a Master Lock, because of the blue bottom edge on which that will be written. As the large separate photo on the left makes clear, that's indeed a very solid padlock, so it's a safe choice.

Well, it's also used for the empty boots in the pic we started with.

And the same for those four inmates I presented earlier, as can seen clearly in case of the most left one of them. The blue bottom edge betrays the use of Master Locks in this prison for its chain-gangs.

MY OWN TRY-OUT OF CHAINED BOOTS

Some ten days ago I posted this photo: four empty pairs of work boots of a chain-gang, one behind the other, the left boots already connected by the heavy chain. I wondered then, what the context of the pic was, whether it was real or fake. Squad43 wrote in a comment, that this setup came "from a stand at some show. The evidence for this is the display board to the right of the picture". I think he is right, so this question is solved. But could it be: Empty boots already chained together, the chains already secured around the boots by a thick padlock, waiting for inmates to step in? It would save a lot of time if the organizing of a chain-gang could function this way, I wrote, "because it means less dragging of long heavy chains for the guards, whereas the distance between the prisoners (which of course has to be approximately the same) is already determined in advance and therefore does not have to be measured again every day, and the prisoners can all put on their shoes at the same time". All inmates could just walk by, take off their slippers and step into their ready boots within a few seconds, where otherwise they would have to be chained one by one, as shown here.

It just required two things, I wrote. “First, not every prisoner has the same shoe size. In order to fit, the 'right' prisoners have to be found for the shoes. The first issue is easy to solve: choose a fixed order for the chained inmates for each separate chain-gang-quartet or quintet, after their shoe size has been determined in advance the first time and so the right work boots can be prepared and put in the right order. It is possible that the crew is often the same anyway: the same prisoners in the same row one after the other every day. They know there place.

If you then also prepare the chains next to each other in a fixed order, each prisoner knows exactly which pair of boots he has to put on at the spot where the chains are waiting for the daily chain-gang crew - number so and so in the umpteenth row. As the result, the quintets or quartets of chaingang-inmates, after they had put on their waiting working boots, automatically would nicely row up ready for transport.

The second issue on closer inspection raised a crucial question: is that actually a problem? Is it a real problem, hat the prisoner can also take off his boot, and that the chain therefore has to be locked a bit tighter after he has put on his boot (which takes time to do so for the guards, this unlocking and locking again)? Because firstly, he would then have to run away in socks, which will slow his pace very much down, and secondly, there are probably guards nearby who will intervene immediately if a chain-ganger tries to take off his boots.

Two things are important anyhow to prevent attempts of an inmate to free himself from the chain: that taking off his boots with the chain still locked on takes a considerable amount of time, and, even more essential, that the chain cannot be taken off with the shoe on, as the latter would enable the inmate to run away in shoes.

Of course, facing this questions, I am going to try something like that myself!  With cowboy boots in my case (I do not have the typical chain gang work boots myself yet), but that probably does not make much difference. This photo shows how it looked like from above.

You pretty feel the chain and its weight all the time. If the chain is so tight that, as was the case here, you can just about put on your boots with some effort, taking them off is also difficult and therefore time-consuming. More importantly, you can't pull the chain over the heel of your boot to free yourself, it's not loose enough for that, even if it's not locked extremely tight around your boot as such.

The pic above shows the simplest solution: a continuous chain is wound once around the ankle and then secured on the left, on the outside, with a sturdy padlock (so not a separate short chain that runs to a connecting chain, as you sometimes see).

I had fastened the chain so tightly that I could just about step into the boot with some difficulty. Freeing myself from the boot-with-chain took quite some time (I even needed a boot jack, and that is certainly not handed out to the inmates during work!), freeing myself from the chain while the padlock remained closed was impossible.

As the photo above clearly shows, I have continued the chain from the padlock in a crosswise manner, so the end of the chain that comes from behind the boot continues to the prisoner in front of this inmate, and the part that comes from in front of the boot, over the instep, continues to the prisoner behind. This is also how it usually happens in reality, as evidenced by the attached detailed photos of real chain-gangs. The first pic is very clear, as the chains are still stretched in good order on the ground. As they walk, they often get a bit mixed up, so that it sometimes looks as if a double chain is attached, as in the last photo the first inmate getting on the bus.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you can wind the chain twice around your ankles and then secure it with the padlock. Then escaping the chain is 100% impossible. The arrangement is done in the same cross-over-composition as with the single winding-version.

The whole thanks to that looks a lot more complicated, and also a lot more intense. Of course, it all weighs a lot more too, and you notice that, for sure. Because in this case the chain has to be a little looser at the same time to be able to put around the boot twice, after you have put on your boot, the heavy padlock clearly pulls the lower chain down, whereas the padlock itself will almost touch the ground.
