Religieus anarchisme kent de stromingen anarcho-communisme, anarcho-collectivisme, mutualisme, individualisme en anarchisme zonder adjectieven. Ik lees het op Anarchisme.nl

Het religieuze anarchisme kent strategieën als anarcho-syndicalisme, insurrectionalisme, anarcho-pacifisme en propaganda van de daad. Anarchisme.nl: "Religieus anarchisme of spiritueel anarchisme legt een verbinding tussen een bepaalde religieuze en anarchistische grondbeginselen. Hoewel veel anarchisten sceptisch of zelfs vijandig tegenover religie staan, zijn er anarchisten die een relatie tussen hun religie en het anarchisme leggen. Zij hanteren anarchistische principes als wederzijdse hulp, solidariteit, individuele vrijheid en gelijkwaardigheid."

Omdat ik een column probeer te schrijven voor het Boeddhistisch Dagblad over religieus anarchisme, en omdat ik geen abonnee ben van Trouw, ging ik te rade bij de website van de beroepsvereniging online voor anarcho's en hun sympathisanten.

Ik lees: "In de monotheïstische religies stellen religieuze anarchisten over het algemeen dat alle mensen gelijk zijn geschapen onder God, en dat daarmee de overheersing van de ene mens over de ander een zonde is. In meer levensbeschouwelijke religies, zoals bijv. het boeddhisme, staat de persoonlijke bevrijding door een gebalanceerd en ethisch leven centraal. In door natuurreligies geïnspireerd anarchisme, staat meestal de relatie tussen de mens en de natuur (of de aarde) centraal."

Een gebalanceerd en ethisch leven, als anarchistisch boeddhist, dat kan een atheist of christen ook, maar de boeddhistische bandbreedte duldt de gemiddelde anarchist beslist. Ik ervaar dat deels door m'n zenoefeningen. Het stille anarchisme in zen wordt belichaamd door het twaalfde eeuwse tempelhoofd en zenleraar Dogen Kigen, die gelijkberechtiging van mannen en vrouwen voorstond, bijvoorbeeld.

Hij schreef en publiceerde daar ongestraft over. Dogen Kigen was al boeddhist (Japan kent honderden zogenaamde boeddhistische 'sektes' of stromingen) toen hij naar China reisde om het Chinese zen (cha'an) te bestuderen. Jaren later voer hij terug naar Japan om zen te verspreiden, toen nog zonder de splitsing in rinzai en soto. Rinzaizen mediteert over koans (raadsels), soto onderzoekt de leegte. Koos ik daarom voor soto?

De dichter en kluizenaar Ikkyu was tijdens de Meijitijd (eind 19e eeuw) een meer recent voorbeeld van een anarchistische zenboeddhist. Hij was vermoedelijk de zoon van een keizer. Als hij niet mediteerde of schreef in een berghut, had Ikkyu een relatie met een blinde zangeres. Hij hield van doorzakken. Kyoto was een vaste pleisterplaats voor hem. Zijn moeder kwam uit een betrekkelijk bescheiden milieu.

Die keizerlijke traditie, die huwelijken tussen het hof en burgers toestaat, kent Japan nog steeds. Overigens weet ik niets van de opvattingen die in de keizerlijke familie over zen leven.

Wat Ikkyu betreft: als bipolair herken ik de uitersten in zijn zenpraktijk en zijn leven met zen. Meer in z'n algemeenheid profiteer ik nog dagelijks van het advies dat het hoofd van de lagere school me gaf: Als je rustig blijft, kun je het Peter.

Geachte heer Lathouwers,

Ik ken u sinds ik u als student journalistiek interviewde in Nijmegen, met het boekje Oosterse Renaissance van Han Fortmann als belangrijk uitgangspunt voor het vraaggesprek.

Het was het begin van een levenslange fascinatie voor zen die rond mijn 36ste culmineerde in een jaar lang meezitten op zondag bij een groep van het Amsterdam Zen Centre. Daar leerde ik de basistechnieken van sotozen (houding, ademhaling), waar ik tot op de dag van vandaag profijt van heb, ook al ben ik amputatiepatiënt en rolstoelgebonden (ik heb er 3). Ik vraag me iedere dag af hoe het kan dat ik nog leef.

Dat heb ik in aanleg aan u te danken, de voorman van het Chinese Cha'an boeddhisme in Nederland (Maha Karuna Ch'an}. Ik begrijp dat u nog steeds weleens sesshins of retraites leidt, op zeer hoge leeftijd, en dat is bewonderenswaardig.

Er zijn honderden boeddhistische scholen die allen vinden dat leven lijden is omdat alle begeerten van de mens slechts tijdelijk kunnen worden vervuld, en begeertes zijn er in vele gedaanten. Veel andere mensen hebben daar geen moeite mee, merk ik.

Langer dan een uur en driekwart non-stop mediteren kwam ik nooit, maar toen was ik wel hypomaan.

Ik was 17 jaar GGZ-cliënt en langdurig alcoholist, tot ik 13 jaar geleden afkickte. Meditatie- en visualisatie technieken hielpen serieus bij een ontwenning die uiteindelijk 7 jaar duurde. Extreme pijnklachten, voor en na amputaties, kon ik door ademhalingsoefeningen beter verdragen.

Ik luister online weleens naar een van uw toespraken, teisho's. Ik vind u met Shunryu Suzuki, Jan-Willem van de Wetering, Basho en Dogen Kigen de beste zenschrijver die ik las. De uitspraak uit uw mond die het meest beklijfde was dat ook na vele decennia zenmeditatie uw brein na 25 minuten zitten en ademen nog steeds op een transistorradio lijkt.

Ikkyu is mijn favoriete zenleraar in gedachten, omdat hij niet deugde, net als de kosmos in essentie. Het mededogen van het boeddhisme staat in schril contrast tot de kille onverschilligheid van het heelal, maar daar hoef ik niet te komen.
