Rock Lee deserves more praise
rock lee vs gaara is still one of the best fights there is. sasuke copied all of lee's moves & gets the glory for it. lee gets told he can never move again.
lee's incredible skill should have gotten the admiration and praise from the whole crowd. idk for me it feels like when an OG artist has their own style & gets no money or praise off of it; then someone else copies it and they get all the praise and money.
even naruto's uzumaki rendan move is a rip-off of sasuke's rip-off of lee's konoha-something move.
in my headcannon lee wins the entire next year's chûnin exam tournament. he places first and sets new records. lee deserves all the praise, all the glory, all the love
edit: idk it just sucks because sasuke is already sooo popular. and lee had to fight & fight & work so fucking hard to just be at "minimum" level. and doesn't get any recognition yet. and then sasuke gets recognition for the groundwork of lee... :/

Do you think Lee has friends outside of his team before the chûnin exam?
No, and part of that is I think really genuinely because it fits with Lee’s narrative and what we see of him, but part of it is because it just wasn’t pertinent to the story. This happens a lot with stories--tv shows, books, any story being told. The main characters we see really don’t have friends outside of their circle--and anyone who comes into their circle later on, doesn’t have friends outside of that circle. Sometimes there’s an inner and outer circle, but it’s very like... ‘these are the core characters and everyone else is just background noise’.
Sometimes it works, but sometimes it just feels like characters aren’t fully realised people; like something is missing. This kind of thing happens a lot because I think, what writers are doing is looking the story with a telescope--we’re only seeing a small portion of the story, a focused portion: the main character and their connections. So the main characters’ connections don’t have connections of their own often times unless those connections are related to the main character in some way/vital to the story in some way.
A great example is Buffy: in the very first two episodes, she befriends Willow, Xander, and Jesse. Jesse goes on to die, and despite the fact that he was supposedly Xander and Willow’s best friend, they immediately forget about his death and never experience any trauma whatsoever. It could have been a really interesting element for Xander, who was especially struggling with Jesse’s death, but Jesse’s character and death was ultimately just for the drama of it all. The telescope the writer is looking through doesn’t see any of that part of the story after he’s dead, so neither does the audience.
Look at the early part of the series: Naruto’s class size is bigger than 9 kids, but we only ever see nine kids from his class in terms of characters, arcs, etc. Only those 9 go on to become the Rookie 9 and later the Konoha 12. Look at Team Gai--where are the rest of their classmates? Are we to believe that only one group of students that year graduated the academy and went on to become Genin? It’s not realistic.
Even if we used a similar argument that’s used in HP to explain the small class size--in HP the argument that Harry’s year and several years after are so small is due to Voldemort and the first war--that still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. For one thing, this isn’t like HP where wizards are few and far between; and two we see that Lee, during his academy days, was a part of a larger class of students and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense that only he and his teammates graduated.
Some of it is a failing on the writer. Although, in some ways, I think ignoring background noise is important to executing a story, it really doesn’t always work and this is definitely one of those times where it feels incomplete.
With Lee, however, I don’t think it’s incomplete. I think it speaks to his specific struggles, the loneliness of his childhood, the ableism he experienced, and ultimately leads him to being so dependent on Gai-sensei (as well as on others though to a lesser degree).
I think it’s an important factor for Lee--he was ostracized and bullied, he was lonely because no one wanted to be friends with the kid who couldn’t do anything but taijutsu, But with other characters, like Tenten for instance, it doesn’t make sense and I think detracts something from the idea of her being a fully realised character.

"Yeah... since the Chûnin Exams, I decided I like it shorter." Sakura smiled.
Inaru sighed as he walked through the Hidden Leaf Village, though his boredom was quick lived as he ran into Sakura. "Hey Sakura!" he smiled and began talking catching up on her and everyone else sense they were in the academy. he smiled as he secretly eyed her grown body and like what he saw.
“Inaru…?” Sakura’s eyes widened in momentary shock. Her former classmate had grown so much over the past few years.
