Early Riser Ch. 3

My Senku-Wakes-Up-Early AU where Senku wakes up 10 years after the petrification.

Chapter 2

By the time they manage to get to the bank where Yuzuriha’s dad works, she’s made a very compelling argument for reviving him, if only because he can, yknow. Actually drive.

Senku concedes the point with only some minimal protests about how he’s totally improving on the driving front, and notes the fact that it probably would be a good idea to have at least one adult in their party since the farmers in northern Kanto probably won’t take three fifteen-year-olds very seriously, potentially jeopardizing the overall mission.

Yuzuriha says she’d be okay with reviving only her dad since she knows their revival fluid supplies are limited, but Senku shrugs and says it’d be better for their psychological well being to bring her mom along too. Plus more bodies is still more bodies, especially since even with Taiju lugging around a bunch of stuff is getting to be a bit tiring. He pretends not to see how Yuzuriha obviously deflates in relief and gratitude when he mentions this.

And so Ogawa Makoto is the fifth person to wake up in this strange new world.

Yuzuriha throws her arms around her dad as soon as he starts breathing again, and he blinks down at them curiously as he hugs her back.

“You know, I suspected the three of you might have something up your sleeves when everything went dark,” he remarks nonchalantly as he takes in the petrified bank workers and customers. “So, any particular reason you woke me up?”

“You’re weirdly relaxed about all this,” Senku remarks, eyebrow raised. Mr. Ogawa has always been a pretty chill guy (a good thing, considering the shenanigans his daughter and her friends get up to), but being so nonchalant about waking up in the post-apocalypse feels like a bit of a stretch. 

He shrugs. “Eh, I’m just well practiced in compartmentalizing my emotions, the fear and panic is pretty well locked up in here.” He taps his forehead. “The other tellers say it’s almost creepy how relaxed I seem in stressful situations.”

“He once stopped a bank robbery by just talking calmly at the thief until they got so unnerved they left,” Yuzuriha says.

“You know this does kind of explain why Yuzuriha didn’t even flinch when she told off those bullies back in fifth grade,” Taiju remarks.

When they tell him about the car situation, the only thing Mr. Ogawa says about it is that he’s genuinely surprised it took this long for Senku to try driving without a license.

With that handy little insight into the trio’s parents’ view of how chaotic they are, Mr. Ogawa drives them to Yuzuriha’s house and they add Ogawa Hikari to the party.

While Yuzuriha definitely got her nerves of steel from her dad, Senku’s pretty sure she got her intense work ethic from her mom. The first thing Mrs. Ogawa does when waking up other than greeting her husband and daughter is to immediately take inventory of all their supplies and suggest they raid the nearest camping equipment store without a hint of hesitation.

“We should go wake up the Okis too,” she says before anyone can say they were already planning on checking on Taiju’s house. “Mrs. Oki has that old hunting rifle that might be of use.”

When they all just stare at her, she frowns. “Well we can’t rely entirely on canned meat, you know, and without steady protein we’ll start to get weaker. Plus I’m concerned about the wild predators we’ll encounter in the north. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not have to worry about bears who aren’t used to seeing humans around anymore.”

It’s a good point, and after loading up all of Yuzuriha’s crafting things they quickly head over to Taiju’s place to pick up his grandparents. 

Oki Kazuhiro immediately bursts into happy tears and embraces all three teenagers at once, saying he was so scared when everything went dark even if he knew Senku and Yuzuriha would take care of “our little Taiju.”

His wife Chie smacks him lightly on the shoulder and tells him off for being such a worrywart before sternly telling the teens that just because they’re saving the world doesn’t mean they’ll be off the hook for any past or future “incidents,” especially since they’ve done more breaking and entering in the last few days than they’ve ever had before.

They find a larger vehicle to carry the party of now seven people to the nearest camping store, and Senku helps Mrs. Oki repair her hunting rifle as she complains about how her license is definitely expired by now.

Mr. Oki manages to somehow Tetris all of their supplies into the new van they borrowed and can remember exactly where he put everything, which is great because Senku’s plan was more or less “throw it all in and deal with it later.” 

Then after ensuring that they have extra batteries on hand, they head north. 

It only takes a few hours to get there, but somehow Senku finds himself nodding off, both him and Yuzuriha resting their heads on Taiju’s shoulders. Before he fully falls asleep though, he hears snippets of whispered conversation from the adults.

“Looks like they’re getting sleepy, huh?”

“I can only imagine. Why do they feel the need to put so much pressure on themselves, you think? They’re just kids.”

“Just kids, you say. About the three hellions that nearly blew up their school gymnasium?”

“Now Oki-san, they did promise never to do that again.”

“She has a point though. They may be young, but they’re not really…ordinary, are they? Even Yuzuriha says she feels like the other girls think she’s weird.” 

“So it might be that they don’t really trust anyone else but each other when it comes to special situations. Why else would Senku-kun wake them up before any adults?”

“Well I’m glad he at least trusts us. I think that boy tries to act too grown up sometimes. And with his father gone—“

“Shhh, let’s not talk about that right now. We have to focus on the plan, alright? No use worrying about something we have no knowledge of.”

“But it’s a real concern. There’s no way Byakuya-san is—“

“We don’t know that. Maybe the astronauts were able to come down to Earth on their own, you know? Some sort of escape pod scenario or whatever.”

“But if he—“

“We can’t. We can’t just talk about him like that. Not in front of the kids. Not in front of Senku. That hope…we all need that right now. You know?”

“…I see. But you didn’t let me finish.”

“Alright?”

“I was saying, that if the worst case scenario happens…then we all have to share the responsibility of taking care of Senku-kun from now on. I’m sure he’ll act like he’s fine on his own, and we can let him think that, but he’s been an Oki as much as he is an Ishigami since Taiju chose him all those years ago, and that’s never going to change.”

“…Well of course. I thought it was a given that we’d do that.”

“I know Yuzuriha would give us hell otherwise.”

“Hmph. Good.”

“Awww Chie, you’re such a sweetie inside aren’t you?”

“Shut up. The kids are sleeping.”

Senku feels someone placing a quilt over him, Taiju, and Yuzuriha, and the softness of the fabric and the rhythm of the van rumbling along finally pulls him into sleep.

no. no worries at all. in fact. you should worry.

im going to start from the beginning. and then explain each character in sequence.

senku, taiju, and yuzuriha are all best friends. senku is the extreme science guy, taiju is the brawny loud and energetic guy who has a crush on yuzuriha, and yuzuriha is a determined but reserved girl who is into crafts. (senku n taiju met during childhood while taiju met yuzuriha in middle school n introduced her to senku in the same timeframe bc she offered helped in making lightweight objects)

one day, (june 3rd 2019) taiju says to senku that hes finally gonna confess after 5 years. however when he finally meets her, bright green light envelops the whole world, and turns everyone to stone.

however, taiju retains his consciousness out of sheer willpower. Esxactly 3718 years pass, and with humans turned to stone, civilization crumbles. buildings fall down, animals take over, nature overrun cities. (note: the only creatures petrified were humans and swallow birds)

Taiju wakes n breaks from stone, naked, n is surrounded by nature. he finds senku, who was actually awake 6 monthz earlier. The only way they found out 3,718 years had passed was bc senku counted the days, and seconde in his consciousness ever since being petrified.

senku and taiju spend 6 months experimenting with petrified swallows for the revival/miracle fluid (depends on translation). in the end, its a success, but just as theyr about to revive yuzuriha they end up being cornered by lions and revive tsukasa shishio, the worlds strongest primate highschooler.

they work together n have 2 wait again to make the revival fluid. however tsukasa sees senkus abilities, and proposes to him an idea. that they should only revive the 'pure hearted youth', bc in this new world, it should be a paradise not tainted by the old world's philosophies where the greedy elders had the power. However, senku disagrees n it becomes tense between them.

Long story short they revive yuzuriha n after a little scuffle, run away to Hakone, where they can get sulfur for gunpowder to defeat tsukasa. but after accidentally lighting a fire they find out that ther r other ppl asides from them who r alive when they get a smoke signal response to their fire. sadly, tsukasa finds them, n after finding out the revival fluid formula, he kills senku.

taiju n yuzuriha run away wit senkus body n miraculously revive him using the science of the revival fluid. But since senkus known as dead, taiju n yuzuriha seprate from him. senku goes to find who made the smoke signal, while taiju n yuzuriha go to tsukasas new 'empire' as spies.

senku manages to find the mysterious person, who is trapped under a tree after they attempted to fight tsukasa. A girl named kohaku (shes blonde, and as senku finds out later, scarily strong and agile.) he eventually deduces that shes not a revived, but rather, a descendant of a revived. senku demonstrates his use of science by making a pulley and lifting the tree log. kohaku thanks him, and after camping out for the night, brings him to her village. its a primitive village, and there he meets chrome, a guy whos another 'sorcerer' (since they dont know science, they call it 'sorcery').

from then on, this is where the first arc starts.

now for my personal opinions.

i love dr stone so much because the anime is a serious, but not totally serious anime. Theres so many goofy scenes, and there are rare emotional moments. When there are, they arent overly cheesy or monologuey. also because the theme is a sort of fantasy, but its also somewhat relatable in terms of how ppl interact with each other. idk it just feels so real. everyone (EVERYONE) has their own unique personalities and features that differentiate them from each other. (except ahmm 4 some side charctrs)

the story has lots of lighthearted funny moments in every episode, n the humor is nice too. overall i am insane over this and it inspired me so much bc throughout the series senkus whole motto is to try and try and try again. it appeals very much to me bc his problems arent solved by some magical miracle. he works, and individually gathers the tools and ingredients needed for each thing he needs. and not just that, he relies on others, and others rely on him. For me, it teaches a lot of lessons about perseverance. n it feels more impacting even he doesnt do things in a snap. he sometimes finishes things in a week, a month, a day. progress takes time. and any bit of progress, even if its just a little, is still worth it. when conflict happens, he does not aim for the best scenario, but something thats atleast not the worst scenario. aside from that, he also gets nervous, he gets scared, he also gets sentimental, though ull barely notice.

in fact, he inspired me so much ive been getting into astronomy lately. Also, another thing another character taught me in this series is passion. like, pursue what you love, it doesnt have to be some long term passion. even if u feel like u shouldnt, pursue it. lets say uve taken interest in painting, paint as much as you can. never limit the desires of ur heart. tho this character was like, an heir of a huge company, rich asf. but the thing is even when he isnt rich (revived in the stone world. the title of heir means nothing now), he still manages to pursue whatever he wanted. he even says in a q and a, that "everything i did i could do through money. But if you truly love it, youll be able to find a way, even without money!!" and thats true. This type of passion also showed in tsukasas backstory. He trained, for years and years since childhood. he went boxing against full adults as a kid, accepted every interview his way, went to every show. until 18 he did so because he wanted to provide for his hospitalized sister (she was announced clinically braindead). his dad was a unemployed drunkard, and of course he needed money to keep his sister well in the hospital. he wasnt even born strong or anything. he was just an ordinary kid. but from then on he would go to free playground parks at night. hed train and train, and at his age signed himself up for ring fights. hed train hard to win against everyone hes pitted against. Just so he could give his sister gifts, and a nice hospital room.

Hardened Criminals (Hell's Paradise)

Heyo! I'm back at it again writing Hell's Paradise jakeajrjekarjk

So! A little fun fact about this one- I actually started it WAY back before the anime was announced. This and a Ler!Chobe fic but we'll get there when we do. Anywho- I wanted to write Yuzuriha again because I love her and here we are! I hope you like it!

This takes place around Ep. 5 of the anime/Ch. 8 of the manga. Also I got Genji and Senta's placing mixed up when I first wrote this but I'm too far gone to fix it so we're just gonna roll with it ALRIGHT HERE WE GO! :D

Summary: Gabimaru and Yuzuriha are left alone for 10 minutes. Shenanigans ensue and Sagiri starts to wonder just what she got herself into.

Sagiri could barely remember where she was. Nor could she remember what she was doing.

One minute she was standing among the group, the next the ground was suddenly very close. The last thing she heard was Gabimaru calling out her name.

Wait…

“Gabimaru!” She sat up in a panic, instant regret settling in as the world spun. From his spot nearby, Senta startled, nearly dropping his book. “Oh! Sagiri, good morning! Well- I think it’s morning. For all we know it could be the afternoon!”

“Where…where are we? Where’s the prisoners?” She asked, Senta’s ramblings doing nothing to help her disorientation. She pressed a hand to her forehead, closing her eyes. No fever- that was good. “What happened?”

“You were poisoned. Turns out those butterflies we fought off earlier carried a toxic dust that-” Her glare cut him off, and he sped up quickly. “Erm- you were knocked out. We took you here to rest and recover. The prisoners are outside-”

“You left them alone?” She started to stand, wavering before making her way towards the opening of the space. “Senta, with all due respect, that was a foolish move! We have to keep an eye on them!”

“Sagiri, please sit down. You look as if you’re going to pass out again.” Senta walked with her, not making any moves to touch her but keeping pace. “The criminals are fine- Sir Genji is with them.”

“Still, it’s my responsibility to watch my prisoner. What if-” The sound of voices cut her off, one in particular she recognized immediately.

Gabimaru.

He sounded…panicked.

“What’s going on?” She quickened her pace, running out to the voices. They got louder, Yuzuriha’s mixing in the shouts. In the distance, she found Genji standing by with his arms crossed. “Sir Genji. What’s happ-”

She followed his gaze.

And found herself stunned.

Ten minutes earlier

“Ugh, I’m bored!” Yuzuhira groaned from her hammock, stretching out like a cat as she stared off into the bright blue sky. “Entertain me!”

Gabimaru, who was currently at work making their meal for the day, shot her a glare. “If you're bored, find work. There’s plenty to do.” He replied, his hands carefully forming each round of ration. “Mend some clothes.”

“Eh. Senta’s better at that than me.”

“Find a water source?”

“Already did- two miles out from here.” She pointed halfheartedly towards a random direction.

“Help out with the meal?”

She rolled over to face him, making a face at the mush he grounded up. “Eh. I’ll lose my appetite.” Still, she climbed up and walked over, plopping down ceremoniously beside him as he carried on his task. “Really, I’m so bored! And Mr Stoic over there won’t talk to me at all!”

If Genji took any offense to her comment, he didn’t show.

“See? He’s like a statue!” She leaned in on her elbows and pouted, fluttering her eyelashes. “Why not take a break? Play with me for awhile, Gabi~”

“I’m married. Don’t make me twist your arm again.” He replied, unfazed. Yuzuriha huffed.

She tapped the ground around her. Tapped her legs. Tapped his legs. Picked up a stick. Drew random pictures in the dirt. Stood and sang a song so lewd it would make even the most serious of the Asaemon blush.

Not even a flinch from either man before her. They had perfected the art of pretending she wasn’t there.

“Ah, this is boring!” She sat back down, once again leaning on her elbows as she watched Gabimaru finish up the mixture. Curiously, she reached out and poked his arm.

“What are you doing?”

“Oh, so that does get me a reaction?” She grinned, poking his arm again.

The shinobi eyed her, going back to ignoring her. She poked his arm repeatedly. Pretended to stab him. Took her dirty stick and tried to draw on him. “Man, you’re like a statue too!” She grinned, dropping the stick lower and jabbing him in the waist just to see.

The small ninja nearly dropped his ration.

There was silence.

“Yuzuriha…” He glared, putting the ration down just as she poked him again. Another jump, another yelp. “Stop that!”

“Are you ticklish?” She dropped the stick and aimed higher, poking his ribs. He practically volted at that. “Heh, you’re like a cat getting sprayed!”

“I’m not a cat- ah! Back up! Back up-gah!” Gabimaru scooted back on his hands as she followed, poking repeatedly. “Oo, you’re so jumpy! It does tickle that bad, huh? She boldly curled her hands against his sides, laughing in delight when he somersaulted away. “Aww, where’ya going?!”

“Away from you- Stahay back…!” He got into a fighting stance, glaring daggers at the kunoichi before him. “Don’t push me, Yuzuhira…”

“Oo, whatcha gonna do?” She cooed, getting into her own battle stance, eyes dancing. “Is the big bad hollow scared of a few tickles?”

“They’re…they’re having a tickle fight.” Sagiri blinked, staring ahead.

Sure enough, Yuzuhira was sitting on the small ninja, her fingers flying across his belly and ribs as he struggled beneath her. The panicked yelling she heard earlier turned out to be laughter; Gabimaru struggling to fight off her hands as he howled in mirth. “Gehehehehhehehet oohoohoohoohohoff! Aheahhahahahahaaha!”

“Aww? Is someone too ticklish for his own good? Hm?” Yuzuriha leaned in so she was nose to nose with the giggly boy, her hands making short work of his lower ribs and causing him to squeak. “I bet I can make you scream, Gabi~ I wanna hear you scream out for mercy.”

“Screhehehehehhhew yohohohoohohhou wihiihiihihihtch! Gehahahahhahaha!” The tiny shinobi cried out, trying to pull off her hands. Even in his vice grip however, he proved ineffective. “Gehehehheheheht ohohohoohohohff meehhehhehehe!”

“Oo, now you’re done for! Just who the hell are you calling a witch?” Yuzuriha shoved her hands into his armpits, making him spasm and cackle. “Oo, bad spot?”

“They’re…having a tickle fight?” Sagiri spoke slowly, as if she woke up in a dream. Maybe she was still asleep after all.

“Your guess is as good as mine.” Genji shook his head before standing, turning to leave. “If you’re well enough to stand, you’re well enough to watch them. I’m going to scope out the area.”

“Wait- Sir Genji…and he’s gone.” Senta sighed, pushing up his glasses before turning back to the sight alongside Sagiri. “Should we…erm-stop them?”

Almost immediately, Sagiri’s chance to reply was cut off by Yuzuriha’s scream. The scene had changed; Gabimaru had flipped them over, his own hands flying over her waist, never straying away from the fabric. “This will teach you, you wicked woman!” He declared, a rare grin pulling at his lips as Yuzuriha screamed like a banshee, clawing at his arms as she laughed.

“YOHOOHOHOHU SUHUUHUHUCK! AHEHAHHAHA SAHAHHAHAGIHIIHIRIN SAHAHHAHVE MEHEHHEHEHE!” She cried, feet kicking in the dirt. Sagiri jumped at the sudden call for action, blinking. Should she…?

“No, help me! She’s wicked!” Gabimaru called over, reaching back and giving the Kunochi’s thigh a squeeze. Yuzuriha let out an honest to god pig snort. “Pfft- holy crap do that again!”

“I don’t think we need to worry about them killing each other, still...” Senta didn’t look like he was making any moves, meaning it was up to Sagiri to resolve this. Sighing, she walked forward, rolling up her sleeves.

“Very well. Hang on just a moment.”

“What? Oh you’re gonna help me-hehehehehehehehe!" Gabimaru shot up with a yelp as Sagiri pressed her fingers into his sides. That was all Yuzuriha needed. With a flip and a twist, she had Gabimaru- and by extension Sagiri, on the ground. Target abandoned, she attacked, hands flying everywhere.

“Ah! Noohohohohoho, not agahahhahahain!”

“Ah! Yuzuriha! Let me up!”

“Ahahaha! Got you two now!”

Senta smiled behind his book, laughing softly when Sagiri let out a shocked squeal- Yuzuriha had found her tickle spot along her shoulder blades. Taking a seat where Gabimaru abandoned his attempt at cooking, he picked up where he left off, watching fondly as Yuzuriha and Gabimaru made a temporary alliance in tickling the stoic swordswoman.

“I think- even in the gravest of settings- a little laughter is nice.” He spoke to no one, lost in thought as he carried on the camp chores.

the quality of the anime is still consistent which is good, gabimaru did some cool flashy stuff, tho it annoyed me that the panel with genryuusai's peeled face was only a handful of frames cause it felt like it had a lot more impact in the manga, but I know I'm gonna have to get used to that since it's an anime and all that

Pokemon Horizons Ep3

nothing crazy but still a very nice episode, like I said next time, it just feels like a breath of fresh air to not have ash around, it feels like the anime isn't shackled anymore to the gyms -> championship formula and it can start exploring more stuff. roy is joining the cast next week so I hope he isn't annoying. also I thought it was strange the anime was set in kanto since this is the gen 9 anime but they ARE going to paldea so that's good

i made a post earlier abt the mangaka drinking his respect women juice .. there is a lot of depth to these ladies;; i love and feel for sagiri so deeply i could yell abt her fight with rokurouta all DAY because i fell so in love w her at that point and just!!!! i just got to the part where yuzuriha is fighting one of lord tensen and finding out more about her IM SCREMAIFHGJF i love her!!!!

BUT YES!!!!! the way lord tensen have no gender but flip back and forth it is so interesting to me especially coming on the heels of what sagiri said to another of the yamada clan earlier on? i forget the exact quote but it all tied into walking the middle path and how it wasn't an issue of gender for her AH i dont know i find it all very interesting!!!!

BUT YEAH CIRCLING BACK TO CHOBEI!!! SEEING HIS FIGHT AFTER COMING OUT OF THE PIT. I WAS SCREAMINGG .. him picking up the use of tao immediately and being so adaptable *shakes u by the shoulders* WHAT A GUY!!! MAN I LOVE THAT GUY!!

shugen i cant speak much on YET bc im only on ch.38 but i did love how u get a sense of him being very strong BUT ALSO!!! very sensitive right off the bat. i think;; that ties into the whole. being in touch w your emotions and feelings thing that sagiri was saying to gabimaru early on!!! that the stronger characters have a sense of feeling and what it is to be weak. im screaming

BUT ALSO....thinking abt where this is going to go. its funny bc lord tensen have a lot of ? i dont want to say hubris? because they ARE a god but .. with the theme of everything i would not be surprised if that was their downfall

From there, things start changing.

“Nitric acid?” Yuzuriha says curiously. 

“That’s what Dr. X said,” Senku nods, setting a sparrow statue on a clean glass tray. “Apparently it was the only substance tested so far that changed anything about the material these are made of.”

“I can’t believe they’re actually alive,” Taiju murmurs as Senku holds out a hand and he deposits a beaker into it. “Those poor little things…”

“Well a few of them exhibited some brain activity, yes, but whether we can classify that as alive needs further testing,” Senku says. “The scans of the sparrow brains didn’t seem to indicate that they registered any external stimulus. And even if the consciousness is present somehow, it needs some sort of energy to sustain itself, so is it drawing on the stone? Or the air? So many questions…”

He doesn’t bother with submerging the statue in nitric acid—the scientists Dr. X heard from already tried that. Instead, he picks up a different bottle. “If nitric acid did something, nital is bound to have some sort of effect too.”

“If it works, we could help save all those stone birds!” Yuzuriha remarks. Taiju nods enthusiastically.

“That would be great!”

Senku slowly measures out 250 milliliters of nital and pours it over the stone bird. The three of them stare at it for a while. Nothing happens.

“Awwwww,” Taiju sighs, “guess nital didn’t do much either…”

“Mmm, we can’t be sure yet,” Senku says, using tongs to transfer the bird to a modified microscope. “This nital’s only 5% nitric acid, after all.” He peers into the eyepiece. “Aha! But there are minute cracks in the surface!”

“Then, what if there was more nitric acid?” Yuzuriha asks. “Would it be more effective?”

Senku grins. “Well, I’ve got some nitric acid and ethanol right here, so might as well start trying things out.” He hesitates. “Though, we should probably move this outside. Nital with nitric acid concentrations higher than 10% can be explosive.”

Taiju yelps, and Yuzuriha makes a face. 

“What?” Senku says as he begins loading his materials into a box. “Five years you’ve known me and that’s a surprise now?”

“It’s not that!” Taiju exclaims. “It’s just, well my grandma said if we got in trouble for setting off the fire alarm again then we couldn’t go to the movies.”

“And I just had my uniform washed,” Yuzuriha says as the three of them make their way out of the science lab. “So if my skirt gets burned again I’m making you pay for a new one.”

“Ah, fair enough,” Senku says.

“Trial 25-3, failure,” Senku says. “Doesn’t look like 25% nitric acid works either. Slightly more surface cracking than Trial 25-A though.” Yuzuriha scribbles down the notes as Taiju hands Senku another bird from his bag.

“We’re going to run out of these soon,” he remarks. “And the nitric acid too. Can’t we just do one bird for each round?”

“Gotta be scientific about this,” Senku says, measuring out some more nitric acid and ethanol. They’re in the school courtyard, a plastic sheet laid out on the grass with all their things on it. “That means repeated trials for each variable change, with identical conditions each time if possible. Beginning the 30% trials now.”

He holds the beaker filled with 250 milliliters of nital with a 30% concentration of nitric acid over the tray. “Yuzuriha?”

She nods. “Ready.”

“Hold on,” Taiju says. “What’s that?”

He’s pointing to the west, where something green appears to be growing on the horizon.

“The hell?” Senku frowns. It’s coming fast. 

“It looks dangerous!” Taiju yells, jumping to his feet. “You two get behind me!”

“Taiju-kun!” Yuzuriha gasps, dropping the notebook. 

“Careful!” Senku shouts. “Don’t knock over the solutions, they—”

The light washes over them, and Senku is abruptly cut off.

April 1, 2029

Senku blinks. A squirrel screeches and jumps away from him and the lapful of glass he suddenly now has, the hand holding the nital beaker suddenly mysteriously empty. 

Well, it doesn’t take a genius to deduce what happened. Senku looks up to see Yuzuriha as a stone statue staring with wide, frightened eyes at Taiju, also frozen in stone with his arms spread out wide.

Alright, so 30% nitric acid worked out after all. Senku carefully brushes the glass off his pants and stands up. While there’s plenty of ethanol to be found in the school, that was the last of the nitric acid, which means he’ll have to find some more before he can bring anyone else back. 

First thing’s first though. According to his count, it’s almost sunset, and there’s no way the trains will be operational after almost ten years. So he won’t be getting home anytime soon.

He glances at Taiju and Yuzuriha. They’ll be fine out here for now. Senku heads back into the school building to get some food. 

It’s creepy inside. The power’s out, and with the golden rays of the early evening trickling in through the windows, the frozen shadows of his classmates and teachers’ statues everywhere he looks are distinctly unsettling, to say the least. 

He makes it to the cafeteria and finds himself some canned vegetables and meat. It’s not much, but with darkness approaching he’s just thankful that he didn’t have to spend valuable time and energy looking for nonperishables outside of the school. And with the heavy doors, it doesn’t seem like any animals made their way into the building, which is good. 

He also finds some bottled water, which honestly he probably shouldn’t be drinking if it’s been sitting around like this for ten years—better boil it first. But with the stoves out of order and no electricity, Senku resorts to the one thing all his teachers seem to think he’s the best at. Setting fires on school property. 

Oh don’t give him that. He did it very safely and in a controlled environment. What, did you expect him to get dehydrated?

After his extremely flavorless canned dinner, Senku takes stock of the bathrooms. Plumbing’s out, okay. He’ll deal. It’s getting darker, so he raids the custodian’s office and finds some still working flashlights as he makes his way to the nurse’s office, where he sets up on one of the cots meant for sick students. Luckily no one else was occupying them, so the only company Senku has is the nurse’s statue, which…is still creepy, but at least she’s turned away from him. 

It’s not a restful sleep, but it’s something.
