Founded by Harry Hirsch, with assistance from Bob Walters and financial/business backing from owners Joel Roseman and the late John Roberts, Mediasound opened in June 1969 at 311 West 57th St. in the heart of Manhattan. Once home to the Manhattan Baptist Church, today the site is occupied by Providence (formerly the trendy Le Bar Bat), where you can still see the Gold Records on the wall. The live room, home to the hits, with, from left, the late Joe Jorgensen, chief engineer Fred Christie and founder Harry Hirsch The original idea came out of a random talk between Hirsch and Walters, who then went looking for money. “There were many 4-track studios in New York City,” recalls Roseman. “There was room for a state-of-the-art facility, one that could handle any kind of recording, tape copies, mastering — so we decided to change the scope of the idea. We went from the original $100,000 investment to over $1 million. It took a very long time to find the space, but Harry Hirsch found the Baptist church on 57th Street.”“I will always be grateful to John Roberts, Joel Roseman and Bob Walters,” Hirsch says, “who listened when I told them, ‘I found a church from heaven on 57th Street,’ and trusted me to design, build and be its first president.”A contemplative Barry Manilow in the live room.Producer Ron Dante: “I brought in my new recordingartist Barry Manilow to record his second album—the one that included our first breakthrough million-seller ‘Mandy.’ Right away we knew that Mediasound was the place to make the best-sounding records in the business.” Bob Clearmountain (Kool & The Gang, Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor and countless others) was handpicked to change the light bulbs 40 feet up in the cathedral ceiling. "I was the only one nuts enough to go up there!" he recalls.Producer Ron Dante with Pat Benatar. 6 AUGUST 2011 EXTORTION 17. A U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter was shot down while transporting a quick reaction force attempting to reinforce an engaged unit of Army Rangers in Wardak province, west of Kabul, Afghanistan. The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board—25 American special operations personnel, five United States Army National Guard and Army Reserve crewmen, seven Afghan commandos, and one Afghan interpreter—as well as a U.S. military working dog. It is considered the worst loss of American lives in a single incident in the Afghanistan campaign, surpassing Operation Red Wings in 2005. In March 2009, U.S. forces (10th Mountain Division) established a base in Tangi Valley after it was noticed that Taliban fighters were exploiting the coalition forces' small presence in the area. U.S., French and Afghan National Police forces carried out a three-day sweep of the area after which the area was deemed secure. In April 2011, due to a decrease in troop levels U.S. forces abandoned the base (Command Outpost Tangi) and turned over control of the base to Afghan forces. However, Afghan forces never assumed control of the base which was seized by the Taliban shortly after the departure of U.S. forces. U.S. forces continued to carry-out operations in the area (mostly via helicopter/special forces) encountering resistance from Taliban fighters on several occasions. For example, on 8 June 2011 a CH-47D was engaged from five to six locations (i.e., points of origin) which fired 14 RPG rounds at the helicopter forcing the crew to abort the mission. After US intelligence services revealed a possible location of a senior Taliban leader by the name Qari Tahir in Tangi Valley, Wardak province, Afghanistan, a mission to apprehend or neutralize him was launched on the night of 5/6 August 2011 from the forward operating base in Logar Province. It was led by a platoon of 47 U.S. Army Rangers with a troop of 17 U.S. Navy SEALs kept in reserve in case of need. The Ranger platoon was transported to the area via two CH-47D transport helicopters (one of them was the accident helicopter) and supported by two AH-64 Apache helicopters and an AC-130 gunship as well as additional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft (ISR). The mission was deemed high risk. The U.S. military helicopter carrying special operations forces to a night-raid in the Tangi Valley of Wardak Province, was most likely brought down by a rocket-propelled grenade, according to military officials. General Abdul Qayum, the police chief of Wardak, said the military helicopter was shot down around 1 am Saturday after a U.S. night assault on a house in the village of Jaw-e-Mekh Zareen in the Tangi Valley that had lasted at least two hours. Local witnesses reported that at least two helicopters had taken part in the U.S. special forces attack on the compound, killing eight Afghan insurgents, but that just after the helicopter had taken off again it was fired upon from a separate position. Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said: "The US chopper that crashed last night was shot down by the Taliban as it was taking off. A rocket fired by the insurgents hit it and completely destroyed it." A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, confirmed that eight of the movement's fighters had been killed in the assault on the compound. He said: "They wanted to attack our Mujahideen who were in a house, but our Mujahideen resisted and destroyed a helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade." Wells Fargo Championship 2017 live stream: Tee times, TV schedule, and how to watch Thursday online
The Wells Fargo Championship is one of the premier stops on the PGA Tour and this year we’ll get a look at a new venue.
May can be a tough month on the PGA Tour calendar. It’s sandwiched in between a bunch of months with major championships. Granted, there’s The Players, which everyone plays if they have an exemption. But it’s also a stretch where players feel they can pick and choose a bit, especially before the summer sprint really starts in earnest. So you can get a lull between the Masters and the end of May.
One of the premier events during this stretch, and really on the entire PGA Tour schedule, is the Wells Fargo Championship. The tournament’s identity and appeal largely come from its venue, Quail Hollow in Charlotte. It’s an excellently maintained track, long, and with major championship bones. This year, however, Quail is actually hosting a major, the PGA Championship in August. So the annual May stop for the Wells Fargo was a no go, taking some appeal away for the players that have always put it on their schedule because of the course.
This year’s Wells Fargo moves across the state to the Wilmington area and Tom Fazio’s Eagle Point. From all early accounts, the place is absolutely pure. The conditioning of the course is what we’ve heard the most about so far, with Augusta-esque perfection from tee to green. While it’s not Quail Hollow, this might be a nice change on the schedule and a good opportunity to see some of the best in the world on a new track.
While the course looks like a strong replacement for Quail, the field took a bit of a hit this year. As I noted last week, some of that could be due to the boost in popularity of the Zurich Classic. The interest in that new two-man team format may have made the weeks preceding it and this week an easier pass for some of the bigger names (13 of the top 30 played last week in NOLA, which had 3 of the top 30 last year). Rory McIlroy, a staple at the Wells Fargo, also got married and is taking a break until next week’s Players. Andy at the Fried Egg ran the numbers and after 14 of the top 25 committed to last year’s Wells Fargo, only 6 showed up this year at Eagle Point.
The field may be down, but that doesn’t mean this won’t still be a good watch. The new course is worth checking out and old friend Phil Mickelson will be back in action, making his first start since the Masters. The world No. 1, Dustin Johnson, is also back, making his first start since the WGC Dell Match Play. That’s who everyone will want to see, especially with The Players coming up next week. DJ says he’s healthy and ready to go again after his fall at the Masters. We’ll get a look early on Thursday, when he’s playing in one of PGA Tour Live’s featured groups streams before 8 a.m. ET. Here’s the full media schedule for the opening round:

Note this club was the old Mediasound Studios (excerpt from Mix Online Magazine) by Bobby Blank: "Bob Clearmountain, Godfrey Diamond, Michael Barbiero, Michael Delugg, Harvey Goldberg, Joe Ferla, Jeff Lesser, Alec Head, Bill Stein, Ron Saint Germain, Michael Brauer, Don Wershba, Ed Stasium, Gregg Mann, Carl Beatty, Kol Marshall, Lincoln Clapp, Joe Jorgensen, Alan Varner, Doug Epstein, Liz Saron, Trudy Schroder, Ramona Janquitto, Ron Dante, Charlie Calello, Tony Bongiovi — these are just some of the names that became the nucleus of Mediasound. In New York City, from the close of the '60s through the birth and death of disco, Mediasound was a hit machine.
