“mom said i’m only allowed to go if my siblings can tag along”: are the New Jersey Devils’ and the Vancouver Canucks scoreboards connected by the force of brotherly love?
it goes without saying that this is for FUN, i don’t know how to properly handle data but i tried my best and that’s enough for now and for me. english is not my first language so mistakes are due to be seen, you are welcome to correct me or ask me anything if doubts are presented.
hi. so first things first, let me introduce myself. i’m cassie, 23, a hardcore fangirl for 10+ years now and new to the hockey world (got into it late october). i’m a devils fan first and foremost, but i do occasionally watch some canucks and habs games (and that’s on me being in love with cole caufield and quinn hughes, because even though i love the game (#LGD), i also loOoOove the players <3).
i actually wrote three huge paragraphs explaining how i had this idea but i sound bsc so long story short let’s just say that it’s something that i’ve been noticing since late november:
whenever the devils and the canucks have games on the same day (or night, whatever you call it), they end up having the same outcome (as in W or L) more often than not. fast forward to mid january/2025, this analysis idea came to me in a dream. or, more specifically, that one moment before you go to bed where you start making up fake scenarios in your head but they get progressively worse and unhinged cause you’re tired af and on the brink of hallucinating. so here i am trying to find out if there’s a ‘bro code’ type of trend behind the nhl.
out of their 26 shared game days, eighteen ended with the same result for both teams. they also won and lost an equal number of games: 9 each. coincidence? maybe. entertaining? absolutely. not safe to say that there’s a 69-ish% chance that they’re connected by the force of family in some way.
out of those games:
five were away for both of them - AA;
five were home for both of them - HH;
four were away (njd) and home (van) - AH;
four were home (njd) and away (van) - HA.
pretty consistent i’d say.
on the AA games we had:
oct. 17: NJD x OTT (3-1) & VAN x FLA (3-1)
nov. 23: NJD x WSH (3-2) & VAN x OTT (4-3)
nov. 29: NJD x DET (5-4) & VAN x BUF (4-3 OTW)
dec. 12: NJD x CBJ (4-2 L) & VAN x VGK (3-1 L)
dec. 31: NJD x ANA (3-2 L) & VAN x CGY (3-1 L)
but when it starts to sound like “this our place, we make the rules”, it looks a little like this (HH):
dec. 6: NJD x SEA (3-2) & VAN x CBJ (5-2)
dec. 8: NJD x COL (4-0 L) & VAN x TBL (4-2 L)
dec. 10: NJD x TOR (2-1 OTL) & VAN x STL (4-3 OTL)
dec. 12: NJD x LAK (3-1) & VAN x FLA (4-0)
dec. 23: NJD x NYR (5-0) & VAN x SJS (4-3)
and when your siblings get to travel around the US and Canada, but you’re stuck in Vancouver (AH):
oct. 15: NJD x CAR (4-2) & VAN x TBL (4-1)
nov. 12: NJD x FLA (4-1) & VAN x CGY (3-1)
dec. 28: NJD x CAR (5-2 L) & VAN x SEA (5-4 OTL)
jan. 16: NJD x TOR (4-3 OTL) & VAN x LAK (5-1 L)
but the world moves on and now you’re the one on a plane (HA):
nov. 7: NJD x MTL (5-3) & VAN x LAK (4-2)
nov. 27: NJD x STL (3-0 L) & VAN x PIT (5-4 L)
jan. 11: NJD x TBL (3-2 OTW) & VAN x TOR (3-0)
jan. 14: NJD x FLA (2-1 SO/L) & VAN x WPG (6-1 L)
that being said, when they are both away, their final results are pretty similar. in almost all of the games listed they had the same results or goal difference.
in HH, both teams scored 17 goals each throughout 5 games (3.4 GPG) in december only. happy hanukkah and merry christmas, i guess! also they lost in OT (dec. 10) to teams that are in the same conference as them, irrelevant, but i do feel the need to point it out. if you wanna know my opinion, jack ‘we are addicted to screen time’ hughes might probably be texting the bros gc “how do we feel about a double L tonight for our family?”. they might as well share one brain cell between the three of them
in AH the stats are the same, 17 goals each. when one of them had a OTL and other an L, the former team’s final scoreboard had a 2+ goals difference. and i just realized that dec 28 was a terrible day for both teams (for njd, it was that game where timo got a major penalty against necas and when van blew the 4-1 lead they had till literally the 5 min before the final whistle). YOLO i guess
literally have nothing to analyse on the NJ!home x VAN!away games besides the fact that they need to get their things together and play like professional athletes once again (opsies)
that all being said, you can’t tell me that those three aren’t a little bit sus. they aren’t triplets, but there might be some telepathic, sixth sense type of thing going on. #connected4lyfe #swag.
are there any other teams in the league that have been going through this or something similar in this season? i get too busy and overwhelmed keeping tabs on the devils (and occasionally van and habs) that i don’t really notice all the other 29 teams. or maybe i’m going insane. if so, let me know cause i’d love to dive into it, who knows what other strange parallels we might uncover till mid april?.
again, this literally means nothing, but i, personally, think it's lowkey funny (like giggling and kicking my feet as I write this) that both teams mirror each other’s results. and that's on hughes your daddy !!
xo,

Was Hakstol a bad coach or do you think there are just personality/coaching style differences that lead to him being canned (hahaha get it?). Obviously this is speculative.
Both.
It's simple, and it's both.
A shorter Stereanalysis for you, under the cut!
All stats, except where noted, are taken from MoneyPuck.
Dave Hakstol was a Jack Adams finalist last year. Generally, the Jack Adams and its finalist positions are given to those coaches who manage to engineer great one-year improvements in their team (see: Lindy Ruff [NJD 22-23], Darryl Sutter [CGY 21-22], Alain Vigeneault [PHI 19-20]). And often, these coaches cannot keep this level of success the next year and then summarily get canned (see: Lindy Ruff [NJD 22-23], Darryl Sutter [CGY 21-22], Alain Vigeneault [PHI 19-20]). (Trust me, half the Jack Adams candidates are out quick within 1-2 seasons after. These are just the more egregious.)
Seattle caught fire with an unsustainable 22-23 season. This is true. The 23-24 season was also slightly uncharacteristically bad regression from the team. It highlighted:
- They have one of the worst shooting% in the league. 7.68% 5 on 5 is fifth worst in the NHL, only above the actual bottom feeders (CHI, SJS, ANA) and, somehow, FLA. All situations, it's 9.11%, fourth worst (CHI, PHI, SJS are below SEA).
(Interestingly, they are the most blocked team in the NHL, with 30.82% of their shots being blocked in all situations. Additionally, 32.64% of their unblocked shots miss the net in all situations. This is fourth worst in the NHL, with only CAR, VAN, and SJS with more.)
- Tied into the last point, they cannot score. 2.57 goals for per 60 in all situations is fourth worst in the NHL (CHI, SJS, ANA are even worse). 5 on 5, this is 2.11 and fifth worst (SJS, CHI, ANA, WSH).
(Another thing that doesn't help is a 47.52% faceoff percentage. It's only eighth worst in the league, but winning faceoffs helps establish possession, leading to scoring chances.)
- They're also not generating high-danger or medium-danger chances. SEA is third worst in all situations high-danger shots for, at 252, tied with WSH (usual suspects CHI and SJS top the list). They're fourth worst in all situations medium-danger shots for, at 575, tied with DET (usual suspects CHI, ANA, SJS above). Sixth and eighth worst, respectively, at 5 on 5.
- Plus, they go on losing skids. A lot. I counted at least five separate 4+ game losing streaks. 2 were 8-game losing streaks. Outside of the 1 9-game winstreak, Seattle failed to string more than 2 wins in a row all season.
- Running Daccord dry does not help. 23 starts in 25 games is batshit.
There's a few other issues, too. Let's talk about those.
Seattle's success in 2022-23 was strongly due to their ability to "roll four lines". Generally, on a hockey team, your top two lines are offensive. Your third line is a "checking" line that shuts down other teams' top sixes while offering a few goals in a pinch. Your fourth line is an "energy" line that plays short sprint shifts to "disrupt" other teams.
Seattle had one of the best fourth lines last year with Donato-Geekie-Sprong, who were highly effective at their roles plus contributed meaningful offense (27, 29, 46 points, respectively). Seattle got rid of all three in the offseason last year (CHI-BOS-DET, respectively), which considerably thinned out their four-line assault. Replacements such as Yamamoto, Tatar, and Bellemare have struggled and been unable to find lasting success.
Additionally, Seattle's been having trouble developing its kids. When the entire team went through a points drought this year, its new-era star Beniers was hit severely, going from 57 points and a Calder last year to 37 this year. Wright, too, has not had meaningful NHL time yet, which is concerning for a former consensus 1OA. While Seattle's strategy was never to "contend now", and it did not anticipate looking like a solid contender in 22-23, it did not adjust to this newer timetable and thus took a massive step back. This is what got Hakstol canned.
Interestingly, the "character" remarks seem to be refuted by Ron Francis (the GM) as well as Eberle and McCann, all of whom went to bat for Hakstol and said nobody "threatened" not to play for Hakstol if he remained the coach of the Kraken. I'm sure there's some truth to it, but, at the end of the day, Hakstol just did a bad job coaching.

top line x supporting robo
DAL @ CGY (03.18.23) — after hitting the 40-goal mark and scoring the ot gwg in calgary following a small slump
SEA @ DAL (05.11.23) — during robo's 8-game post-season scoring drought, right before his 3-assist night against seattle
DAL @ VGK (05.27.23) — after robo's 5v5 break-out and 4 goals in 4 games in the vegas series
#jason robertson#joe pavelski#roope hintz#dallas stars#stars#*#niche gifset trying to articulate what i love about top line's communication style don't mind me#understated but highly reflective and discerning problem-oriented system that knows exactly when to push and support one another#even if so much of it /is/ Do The Right Thing or Make The Right Play that's not to say there aren't highly manual and emotionally-dependent#processes that influence their in-game automation#and it takes three people who are both aligned in the standards they hold themselves to on the top line and who know how to reliably#navigate and distribute that pressure amongst themselves#i'm normal..........#i do think roop being like yeah we talked about it i told him to chill out is legitimately romance though.

Top 5 games from last season?
Look, we didn't win all of these vibes but I was vibing and having a good time which is what I care about. Also you can't force me to rank these in numerical order so in no particular order:
CAR v MIN, Nov 19 2022. The. Goose. 1k. Narratives. Also I like the Canes so I was happy to see them in person (bonus: Koochie was in net so sorry you had to lose buddy).
CGY v MIN, Mar 7 2023. Pride night jersey disappointment aside I got to meet up with some tumblr mutuals (love you all) during intermissions/warmups and I got a puck from Merrill (and totally didn't cry because of it). But also fuck you "offsides" rules you stole my Spurge OT penguin slide celly from me.
SEA v BOS, Jan 12 2023. FUCK YOU BOSTON! WE WRECKED YOUR "NO REGULATION LOSSES AT HOME" STREAK MUAHAHAHAHA. Plus we were still undefeated in 2023 with 7 games played at this point.
ANA v MIN, Dec 3 2023. THE JARED SPURGEON MOMENT THAT I AM STILL NOT OVER. Such fast. Much wow.
MIN v DAL, Apr 17 2023. The drama. The 2OT. The Gus Bus. The Faber save. Hartzy GWG. THE HOPE WE STILL HAD.

In my head I like to think of all the nhl teams as a big extended family or whatever
like the original six are all siblings
then the expansion six five
then three sets of twins: VAN-BUF, CGY-NYI, NJD-WSH
then the WHA siblings: EDM, CAR, COL, ARI
then the 90s teams: SJS, OTT-TBL, ANA-FLA, NSH, WPG, CBJ-MIN
and then VGK and SEA with vegas as like the successful older sibling to seattle the baby
#flames are the islanders' twin sister to me#edmonton is like a cousin. dynasties next to each other and all
