Day 6: Trust
They said it was foolish to trust anyone in the courts. Those who offered their trust blindly would soon find themselves betrayed.
But Changge was clever and she was sure she could tell who could and could not be trusted.
Her brothers, for example, were untrustworthy brats who'd gladly sell her out if they thought they could get away with it. But she could trust them to be cowards: if she were there, in person, they wouldn't dare to do anything.
Her teachers were trustworthy, teaching her all the things she'd need to protect herself (and her mother). They were men of experience and skill and Changge was most pleased to learn all she could from them. Wei Zheng had put a hand on her head once, warned her of hubris and how one should never assume to know everything. He might have meant it as a rebuke for her story about how she'd known more about her brothers (but later, she'd wonder what it was, exactly, he had been warning her about).
Her mother, she trusted because she was her mother. Rather than worry about whether or not she could be trusted Changge had been far more preoccupied in making her smile.
Then there was her unlce, the Prince of Qin, the bravest warrior she knew, both smart and kind. He'd given her gifts (including a beautiful sword and a leopard), and there was no one in the whole of Chang An, she believed, who deserved her respect and trust more.
He had been her hero (once) and she would have fought (had done it on more than one occasion) anyone who spoke badly of him.
After their betrayal, she had resolved not to put her trust in anyone again.
Only a fool would make the same mistake and Changge may be many things, but a fool, she was not.
But then there was Ashina Sun, who was not perfect, not very clever and basically nothing like the people she had trusted in the past. She had even less reason to trust him and yet...
(...she did.)

Trump claims only he can keep your portfolio afloat, but JPMorgan says a Biden win would be neutral to positive for stocks
The holiday weekend has done nothing to slow the positive momentum for U.S. stocks. Strong U.S. jobs data buoyed investors on Thursday and the three major benchmark indexes made significant gains at the open on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.07% was 1.2%, or 310 points higher in early trading.
But coronavirus cases continue to rise, with another daily new-cases record for the U.S. on Friday, while election uncertainty and the risks attached also linger on the horizon. Recent national polls show presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden pulling ahead of President Donald Trump, a Republican. Analysts and investors have viewed some of Biden’s policies as being potential negatives for stocks, while Trump argued last week that “the stock market will drop down to nothing” if he is not re-elected Nov. 3.
In our call of the day, JPMorgan strategists say that, contrary to that view, a Biden win in November would be “neutral to slight positive” for equities. The Democrat’s major economic policies include lifting the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% — partially reversing the Republican corporate tax cut of 2017 — and increasing the federal minimum wage. The investment bank’s U.S. equity strategy team also says it expects the former vice president to ease tariffs on China and increase infrastructure spending.
Read: How to position your portfolio for a Joe Biden presidency
Many presidential challengers tend to campaign at an extreme, particularly during their parties’ primaries, later converging toward the political center. Biden positioned himself as one of the two or three most moderate candidates in what was an uncommonly large Democratic field.
JPMorgan’s strategists note that Biden’s policy priorities were initially set out pre–COVID-19 and would surely shift. “Given the current economic weakness, business recovery and job growth are likely to be prioritized over policies that could dampen economic growth and perhaps even jeopardize the desired 2022 midterm election outcome,” the investment bank’s U.S. equity strategy team said in a note. The higher corporate tax rate would bring an earnings headwind of around $9 for S&P 500 SPX, +1.22% earnings per share, the strategists, led by Dubravko Lakos-Bujas, warned.
However, they said the corporate tax hike could end up with the rate being lower than 28% and would also be offset by the softening of tariffs, infrastructure spending and higher wages. “Further, a more diplomatic approach to domestic/foreign policy will likely result in lower equity volatility and risk premia,” they added.
The team’s Democratic agenda outperformers — though it stressed the agenda remains fluid — include Tesla TSLA, +7.47% and Nikola NKLA, -8.79%, both benefiting from spending on alternative energy and green technologies. Biden’s health-care agenda puts Johnson & Johnson JNJ, +1.33%, CVS CVS, +0.34% and others in the outperforming basket, while tariff de-escalation sees Procter & Gamble PG, +0.31%, Nike NKE, +0.77%, Boeing BA, +1.33%, 3M MMM, +0.53% and DuPont DD, +0.68% feature.
A minimum-wage hike would have a positive impact on consumer spending and would be a net positive for S&P 500 companies despite higher costs and some employment losses, according to JPMorgan. “Distinguishing winners and losers will depend on businesses who will see incremental demand due to rising disposable income, lower labor intensity (revenue/employees) and higher margins.”
As a result, Apple AAPL, +2.41%, Facebook FB, +1.19%, Google parent Alphabet GOOG, +1.53% GOOGL, +1.54%, Twitter TWTR, +3.88% and Visa VISA, +0.68% all appear on the list of outperformers.
The market
After strong jobs data sent U.S. stocks higher on Thursday, the Dow opened higher again on the other side of the Independence Day holiday weekend, as positive sentiment around the economic recovery continued. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.22% rose 1.3%, while the Nasdaq COMP, +1.77% was 1.8% up. European stocks SXXP, +1.20% surged early on Monday, led by banks and following a rally in Asia overnight — China’s Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, +5.71% climbed close to 6%.
The buzz
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway BRK.B, +1.84% BRK.A, +2.11% is buying Dominion Energy’s D, -6.59% natural gas storage and transmission assets in a deal worth a total of $9.7 billion, the company said late on Sunday.
Ride-sharing company Uber UBER, +4.28% has agreed to buy food-delivery service Postmates for around $2.65 billion, according to media reports on Sunday night.
The world’s second-largest cinema operator, Cineworld CINE, -4.32%, said on Monday that Canada’s Cineplex CGX, +2.94% has started legal proceedings against it in relation to the termination last month of a proposed acquisition.
German manufacturing orders rebounded in May, jumping 10.4% after their biggest fall in April since records began in 1991.
Big technology companies, including Google parent Alphabet, Amazon and Facebook, face a raft of proposed EU regulations aimed at curbing alleged anticompetitive behavior, a top EU official said.

written for @cgxweek2017, bonus prompts: unable | unwilling. Also @ AO3.
“What little faith my guard has in me, to be so wary despite our agreement!” Qiao Shiqi said, his voice deliberately raised within earshot of Hao Dou, and smiled at the man’s failure to preserve his calm in the face of a honeyed reprimand. Though it’s natural that he trusts in Teacher a great deal more than he trusts in me.
Their return to Chang’an was still many days away and the camp had not yet finished setting up for their third night of travel, so he had cordially invited the new envoy to walk and talk. Now the princess of the Uyghurs said, “Perhaps a friendly spar with Shiba would relieve him of his uncertainty.” She herself approached certainty as an old friend—or pretended to. She couldn’t appear as anything less in the imperial court.
“Oh?” Qiao Shiqi glanced over his shoulder and caught a glimpse of her living shadow, following in lockstep. “No,” he replied, saying what they both knew. “It’s not your guard’s sword that troubles him.”
Not the sword, but the princess. What was Teacher most afraid of? Only her presence, graceful and forceful, with a purpose unknown. But Qiao Shiqi felt at ease. She was no less a threat with her cunning, but she was a princess of Tang—and with such a will, his old promise was not useless after all. “It’s simply that the princess is praiseworthy beyond expectation,” he continued. “For the will and ability of Your Honor are alike.”
“… A dear friend once said much the same,” said Li Chang Ge, her eyes distant. “Truly, what difference is there?”
-
Set post-Ch. 61 with reference to Qiao Shiqi's backstory from Shi Yi Lu. Sun comments on unable vs. unwilling in Ch. 37, then references it again in Ch. 41 when he offers to elope with her the option of joining him. But I wonder if Chang Ge might well try to turn inability into unwillingness. ;___;

CGX Week 2017 - Day 5
Tumblr media
Harmless at first sight, fearsome when provoked.
/
见之似好妇,夺之似惧虎。
(Situ Langlang, Chang Ge Xing, chapter 27, adapted from source)
Fun fact:
The complete line that Situ Langlang said is:
不错, 不错, 见之似好妇,夺之似惧虎。果然有我门中风范 。
The English scanslation translated this as:
Not bad, not bad, harmless at first sight, fearsome when provoked. Exactly what I’m looking for in a disciple.
A more literal translation would be:
Not bad, not bad, when seen like a good woman, when robbed like a feared tiger. Sure enough has our sect’s style.
This line, “见之似好妇,夺之似惧虎” is taken from Wú Yuè Chūn Qiū (吴越春秋; Wu Yue Spring and Autumn) and was what the founder of the Yue Nu Sword Style supposedly said when describing her sword style to the King of Yue (cited from Baidu; I’m not sure how historically correct this is, so take this with a grain of salt.)
The line basically means that the practitioner of the sword style looks like a gentle lady, but when being attacked, will react swiftly and fiercely like a tiger facing a threat. This is what Situ Langlang meant when he said that Chang-ge has their sect’s style.

written for @cgxweek2017, day 6 prompts: again | trust. Also @ AO3.
Wuluohun hadn’t seen her son in months. Now he had returned, healthy and strong as ever, but his face was soured by grief and frustration. The joy of their initial reunion was marred by concerns that surfaced when their conversation turned to the clans—“You should have called me back sooner!” said Pusa vehemently, and with a commanding flourish sat down on the ground before her.
How typical of her son, Wuluohun thought, to behave like a man who assumed his ownership of the earth.
Pusa continued, “The other clans are deluded to try claiming what’s ours now that Father’s dead. I displeased him sometimes, but I never disappointed our tribe. This squabbling makes fools of them all.”
“Or it reveals the fools,” Wuluohun replied. Upon her elevated seat, she was embroidering with a smile—a natural sign of happiness in others’ eyes, for surely anyone would be glad to welcome their own child home again. She looked much the same when her plans came to fruition. “Some clan elders of Huduoge and Gesa have been tangling with each other as petty rivals, like thoughtless children. Set beside them, aren’t you the most admirable choice in the eyes of the people?”
“… I see Mother has been hard at work. But we can’t let the Turks think we’re prime beasts for slaughter.”
“Have faith that I didn’t forget. They’re busy demanding blood from the Han at this time of year, but we can’t be complacent—an appropriate time to air my worries about our external weakness. The tribe will know who serves as our most worthy sword.”
“… My thanks, Mother,” said Pusa. His voice had sunk low, his temper cooled and contained by certainty. “With your help I’ll do what needs to be done. And I trust your judgment.”
Wuluohun glanced up from her work at last. In one hand she held the embroidered design of a wolf, newly stitched into existence; in the other she held her needle, so light and slender as to be near invisible. “My poor heart is relieved to hear that,” she sweetly said. “Really… having lost one child, how could I allow it to happen again?”
-
Qin Gu, in Ch. 46: "Pusa deals with external foes while Wuluohun takes care of internal strifes; together, mother and son have made the Uyghur camp almost impenetrable."
Set pre-canon, just some speculation based on the history of RL Pusa with other clan names pulled from here. Pusa & Wuluohun belong to the Yaoluoge (Yaghlakar) clan.
