Plot

Ares and Ivy plans a birthday party for Alex's birthday! Dare is nervous about it, since Alex doesn't celebrate his birthday and never has.

“ Does Alex celebrate his birthday?”

Darian blinked at the question Ares popped so randomly while they were hanging out in the living room. Ivy was sitting in his lap, watching whatever played on the TV, while he was leaning against his partner's side. It was a strange question, but one that wasn’t unwelcome. He adjusted how he sat, pulling Ivy’s attention to the conversation by doing so unintentionally.

“ Not really, but out of habit,” Dare answered truthfully. It did upset him to think about it, but he understood why Alexandrite, their oldest partner, avoided his birthday. “ His parents didn’t do birthdays,” he decided to add.

“ Oh, I see,” Ares’ awkwardly answered as he settled back into the couch. He laid his arm across the backing of the couch just behind Dare. The action welcomed more cuddles.

“ Why do you ask?” he asked after a few seconds had passed. He wasn’t trying to pry into the thoughts of his boyfriend, but it was difficult to not want to know what on earth he was thinking.

Taking a deep breath, Ares replied, “ I was thinking, since his birthday is coming up, we could do something?”

The poor white-haired man looked so nervous, which was fair. Although the very fact made him smile. He adored it when those two got together. They were quite the unlikely pair to be together, in all fairness. At the question of a birthday event, Ivy lit up. She moved to fact them both instead, not that Dare minded. He simply shifted his grasp to support her. His arm laid across her back, sort of like the back of a chair. Then her legs were draped across both their laps.

“ Yes! Let’s do something!” she agreed without hesitation and a beaming smile.

Dare sighed. “ I supposed we could at least try to do something,” he caved in the end. It was hard to deny things when Ivy got excited. Plus when Ares smiled calmly and wrapped his arm around him for a side hug it was worth it. He smiled himself, leaning more into his partner.

“ It’ll be small, but we’ll do something.”

“ Yes, small,” he warned gently.

The day of Alex’s birthday arrived far quicker than anyone would’ve expected. Occasionally, Ares asked Darian a few questions throughout the week. They tended to be so random it hurt his brain too. But when the day came, Dare was woken up by a text from Ares asking if he could bring Alex over to his home around this afternoon. He had texted at six am. Six. am. It was way too early for it, so he just rolled over to face his partner and went back to sleep.

Later, after they got up for the day, Alex cooked them some late breakfast while he sat at the counter. He was nervous, to say the least. Now that he’s woken up he wasn’t sure this was a good idea anymore. He chewed the inside of his cheek, watching as Alex made them pancakes like he did every Monday.

“ Ares wants us to come over later,” Dare voiced as he was handed some juice to hold him over while he waited. He was starving, more so for Alex’s wonderful food. The large man paused, looking puzzled as to why.

“ Okay, any reason why?” he questioned, reasonably. It also helped give away that he wasn’t even aware of his own birthday.

“ No, he just wants to hang out,” he reassured as he moved to rest his head into the palm of his hand. He fidgeted with the glass of strawberry juice. It was amazing, homemade. “ It’ll just be the four of us, as usual.”

“ Oh, okay. That's fine then,” he got in reply.

Alex spun back on his heel and returned to cooking pancakes for them. When he finished, he organized them between two plates and then slid one over to Dare. He sat down beside him and quietly ate. The morning was already so peaceful. He hoped it stayed that way for the entire day. As fun as the party was, Alex still deserved to have a calm and stress-free birthday.

By the time they finished eating and cleaning up the dishes they both had used, it was time to leave for Ares. Though Darian waited as Alex got ready. He always waited until the last minute to get dressed, he swore.

“ Make sure to wear something comfortable,” Dare huffed as he waited in the hallway just to the side of the bedroom doorway. The only reply he got was Alex mocking what he said with a huff. It made him smile, even if it wasn’t nice to do.

Soon he popped out of the bedroom. He wore a nice long-sleeved shirt and some sweatpants. After sharing a small kiss, they left for their partner's home. Thankfully, the drive wasn’t too long either. The last thing either of them wanted was a long, painful, drive. Parking only took a few minutes, so did traveling up to the front door of the home. He let Alex knock on the door, and then they waited. Much to either of their surprise, when the door swung open they were met with their shortest partner. Ivy was in comfy clothes, had a calm smile, and looked a bit nervous. Ares on the other hand could be spotted in the kitchen.

“ Oh, hi Ivy,” Dare greeted. He reached out to gently pet her head, to which she smiled a bit brighter at them.

Stepping into the space, it was set up to celebrate Alex’s birthday. The colors were pastel, but bright. The birthday banner was plastered across two walls just in front of the front door. It felt wrong to be nervous, but Dare was. As Ivy closed the door and attached herself to his side, he picked up that she was little. Out of the three boys, he never minded when she was. If anything, he had a massive habit of yoinking little Ivy away from them. He loved how she followed one of them around quietly. It was so adorable to him. He sighed gently, offering his hand to her palm up. She seemed confused by it at first, but quickly linked their hands together when she did process it and cuddled their fused hands to her chest.

“ Oh..” Alex finally spoke up after taking in the view of all the decorates. His voice was quiet, hesitant. “ Is… that today?”

“ Yeah, it’s your birthday bud,” Dare chuckled as he walked towards the living room slowly.

Ivy trailed behind him, still clinging to his hand. When he reached the couch, he fully scooped her up and spun her around. She giggled, buried her face into him, and then huffed when they sat down on the couch. He held her happily, occasionally rocking her gently back and forth.

Alex swallowed thickly but decided against replying. He shuffled into the living room and sat down away from the pair. He kept chewing on his bottom lip to relieve the anxiety that was pooling in his chest. Before he got the courage to say something, anything, Ares came out with a beautiful-looking cake. He set it down on the coffee table, then flopped down onto the couch beside Dare and Ivy. The cake got his attention, being someone who adored sweets. He chewed on his bottom lip more.

“ Sorry if this upsets you or anything,” Ares began. He sounded nervous as well. With how quiet Alex was being, no one could blame him.

“ No… it’s just,” Alex attempted to communicate his thoughts, but as usual he had a hard time. He huffed to himself in frustration.

To make things easier, Ares leaned forward and tugged Alex to come closer. He did without argument, leaning against the shorter man and closing his eyes. It was calming to be like this, close to others. His mind was feeling fuzzy, but he wasn’t sure if it was stress caused or because he was genuinely happy.

“ I do like it,” he made sure to say. Ares nodded patiently at it. “ It’s just, a lot. I guess.”

“ Okay, that’s okay,” Ares told him as he laid an arm across the older’s shoulders.

Alex slid down on the couch so he was a bit shorter than him. It made him feel a bit smaller, as well as safe. They were all quiet for a while, besides Dare’s humming filling the space. They were all so patient. Ares reached for the remote for the TV after about an hour. He turned it on and put on a kid-friendly show, more because of Ivy. He was fairly unaware of Alex’s slipping mind.

“ Cake?” Alex asked quietly.

Ares and Dare laughed at the question. It was only a matter of time before Alex asked for some cake. The sweet tooth on him was rather intense, not that anyone ever minded such a thing. While Ivy and Dare were quietly playing, Ares got up from the couch. He grabbed a small plate and a knife to cut the cake. He sat on the floor, soon Alex joining him just across from him, and cut the cake up evenly. The older man across from Ares was practically vibrating in excitement. Although he didn’t smile, it didn’t take a genius to know that he was happy.

Putting a slice onto the plate, he carefully passed it to Alex. He took it with two hands, then sat back so his back was leaned against the couch. Dare’s leg was on the right of him, so he leaned against it and ate his cake quietly.

“ Do you want to open one of the gifts?” Ares offered.

Presents made him excited. Despite being mid-bite of his yummy cake, Alex nodded excitedly. He pushed the plate onto the coffee table. Ares leaned back and grabbed one of the boxes, then set it next to his partner. As soon as the box was set down, Ivy was shoving herself onto the floor next to him. Dare leaned against his legs so he could watch them. She settled down between his legs. She copied Alex so blatantly, which was normal at this point. When Alex started regressing, she mirrored him. Alex took another bite of his cake before going to open his present. Because of this, Ivy pouted and looked up to Dare. She was upset she didn’t have her own.

“ You gotta ask Ares,” Dare gently encouraged the quiet little. His fingers brushed some of her hair to tuck comfortably behind her ear. Her pout deepened.

The sound of ripping wrapping paper filled the room, while Ivy kept looking between Alex, his hands, the cake, and Ares. By the time the box was unwrapped, she finally caved. She pushed herself onto her knees and leaned against the table. She reached over to him and tugged at his shirt. This grabbed his attention.

“ Hmm?” he hummed as a content smile fell on his expression.

“ Cake…” she whispered just loud enough that he could hear. He raised and eyebrow at her.

“ That isn’t how you ask nicely,” he scolded gently. She, reasonably, became upset at this. She whined and squirmed in her spot. Ivy sat back against the couch so hard she bounced against it a bit.

Alex was struggling to open the box. The noise of Ivy’s small fit had him turning his attention to her. He frowned, borderline pouted. He disliked seeing her upset. It upset him.

“ Please, cake?” she tried again.

It was close enough. So with a sigh, Ares took it. He put a slice for her onto a plate and then set it on the coffee table in front of her. Alex was pleased by the way she smiled again. He turned towards the tape-shut box, shaking it with a frustrated huff before holding it out to Dare. Dare took it with a smile. He tugged out a pocket knife and opened up the box for him, just cutting the tape to free it. Then he handed the box over.

“ Sorry, I didn’t think he’d regress…” Ares apologized sheepishly. He spotted Ivy trying to take the plate off the coffee table in the corner of his eye. “ Don’t do that, keep it on the table,” he’d scold.

She pouted again.

Alex leaned forward, taking a bite of his cake while watching Ivy. She did the same. It made him smile and laugh quietly. He loved it when she mirrored him. He found it so funny. He opened the box and pulled out what was inside. It was a few new and soft long-sleeve shirts.

“ Thank you,” he whispered as he rubbed the fabric against his face.

“ You’re welcome,” Ares contently replied. “ I’m just happy you’re happy.”

The words made Alex smile.

Hi-ho, Wudgey here! Happy Sunday!

🎊 🎊 🎊 I wrote the first drafts of scenes 9,10, and 11!!!!!  🎊 🎊 🎊

And I’m surprisingly pleased with them! :)  I can’t wait for you guys to see the game’s final form, and I hope you love it as much as I do. (But probably not, because I love Herotome a lot lmao).

I rendered new/additional concepts for the resume profile picture, and sketched a full body render of the Default protagonist. I’ll probably post some pictures next week.

Sketched a bust sprite for an NPC named Akio, and rethinking his hero name. Currently I’m feeling Business Ronin and Ronin Salaryman.

Thumbnailed the CGs required for Warden’s route: narrowed it down to 4 CGs in total.

I drew three new alternate hairstyles for Jade.

Wrote a short story about Dart’s dad as a writing exercise.

And speaking of Dart, I’m rethinking his powers and his hair, and I’ve decided that smoke fits him better than electricity. I can’t wait to show of what he’ll do with his new powers!!!

As for his hair, I narrowed it down to four thumbnail options (out of like... fifteen..........) and will continue to develop his look from there:

I wondered if “Dart” might be short for something, like Darton (or Dartell? or Darold. Or Dartagnan or Dartanios if we REALLY wanna be extra). 

He’d still primarily go by Dart so it won’t really make a huge difference in the actual game, it’d just keep his name from looking too much like “Darin” as I’m coding. Alternatively, I could switch the spelling of Darin to Darryen or Darian or Durian because he does look a bit like a durian doesn’t he--

I’ve also done a fair amount of work to the Herotome discord server. I learned how to set up twitter webhooks, for starters. But uh, haven’t had any success setting up a webhook for tumblr.

Continued working on patterns and overlays... ughhhh lol. This included researching a science video on Tom Scott’s channel about visual disturbances. I also sternly informed myself that overlays are not pivotal to the gaming experience and I should definitely be writing instead

Personal Note:

I’ve been playing a lot of @steamberrystudio​‘s  Changeling! The characters all have an enviable amount of depth, and it���s been a total blast getting to know them all. Since it’s a full release and not a demo, it’s going to take me quite a bit longer to write A Loving Overview.

I also started playing Pinstripe by @atmosgames​ after meaning to get to it for the past year or two. I keep having to stop and take notes on the incredible sound design though, and the voice acting is stellar as well.

1. Full names - Ricky - Rickon Lawrence Logan. I took the name Rickon from Game of Thrones back when I read the book years ago freshman year high school. He was always Ricky when I first made him as a middle schooler, but I didn’t want his full name to be Richard, so finding the name Rickon was super good~ Rickon means “impulsive”. I chose Lawrence cuz of Larry from Teen Titans. Lawrence means “from laurels”, which works cuz he’s a vegetarian. Logan as a last name is another nod to Teen Titans because it’s Beast Boy’s last name XD I still think of the Logan kids as my BB x CG kids even if they’re their own original bunch now. Logan means “hollow” (like his head jk jk).

Jack Darian Logan - I always liked the name Jack growing up cuz of my two favorite Jacks: Jack Spicer and Captain Jack Sparrow. It’s also basically the same name as his dad John (my dad’s name is John too and he will sometimes go by Jack, so I decided to kinds take that for these guys). Jack means “man”, which is ironic because he hates being referred to as a human. Sad to say I got the name Darian from the English dub of Sailor Moon, but it’s a nod to his and Ricky’s grandfather Darren. Darian means “gift”, which is ironic because Jack is a little shit. Logan is the same as above~

6. School - Ricky sucked at everything but lunch, and he still does XD It is harder for him to focus on studying, but he’s good at memorizing spellings/names/dates, etc. He didn’t like school as a kid. He thought it was a waste of time since he’d be going to monster hunting school at age 10. Little did he know he needed all those skills so he can actually be good at hunting school :’D He did like being with kids his own age, but he wasn’t able to make any friends unfortunately. I won’t spoil if he finished his hunting education or not just in case you guys wanna wait until I send you the story and stuff XD He doesn’t get a higher education.

Jack never went to school, and never will LOL

9. Animals - I like to think that animals like Ricky, and Ricky certainly likes animals back XD He’s smart enough to know if an animal looks dangerous though. Animals do nooot liiiike Jaaaack, and he most certainly does not like them in return, tho I’d still imaging he could use an asshole cat so they could both be assholes together.

16. Collections - Ricky collects stuffed animals, and I’d totally imagining him having some kind of equivalent to tsum tsums. They all say in his bedroom at home~ Jack don’t collect jack (puns).

25. Humor - Ricky’s easily amused, so he finds silly words like “spatula” funny also funny faces and super dumb things like puns and all that. I’d like to think he has a good sense of humor so long as others aren’t hurt for the sake of a joke. He’s sweet like that. He wants to be funny, but he tries waaaay too hard. Jazz thinks he’s funny tho~

Jack’s sadistic so he finds comedy in pain/the suffering of others. He’s not funny, but he’s super sarcastic. It’s enough to make a reader laugh I’m sure, but everyone in the story hates his guts and never would laugh with him.

26. Happy - Ricky is totally the type to hum/sing when he’s feeling good~ He tends to hide any and all other emotions besides happiness tho, the poor guy just wants to be happy all the time cuz he thinks it’ll make other happy too :’D Jack’s rarely happy, but when he is, he’s laughing insanely to show it.

38. Admire - Ricky admires…dang this is hard. Okay so like he admires the fact that all his friends are strong in their own way. Ricky wishes he was better at explaining his feelings to people other than Jazz :’3 Jack admires Zephia’s cunning and knowledge. It’s really hard on him when he loses her. He wishes  he knew as much as she did.
