It's been a while since I made a post like this...and it's probably the worst case scenario to talk about now. No, I love GUMI and I am proud of how it is giving more attention to enter into multifacets for different voice banks...I clarify this, it is NOT made to defame GUMI SV or Internet Co of this decision. My problem is due to SynthV and its scandalous Fandom that...I am not pleased with the level of stability that most users have for this type of news.
Well, I won't deny that Vocaloid is currently in decline and barely had the luck to update V6 a year ago, but it's not to say that they have always been terrible at their job and that they spread evil just because they use a more complex level to make new voice banks. Let's remember that if it weren't for Vocaloid, other Synthesizers like UTAU and SynthV itself would not exist, yes, their main star Miku and company are no longer updating themselves with all this success that the most recent synthesizers have but I remind you that, in 2019 Crypton had decided this after the decline of V5 and how Yamaha has become a conflictive company that lost all ties of labor cooperation to continue updating their Loids. So if there is someone they want to blame, it is both companies for having a closed mind, do not defame and make the Vocaloid characters look bad for this very reason.
Now the SynthV Fandom...look, I'm not one of those people who prejudge and make a group of people look bad just because I don't agree with their opinion, in certain cases, I admit that SynthV has surprised me and certain banks I like the voices of it depending on the cover I hear. But the direction I'm seeing from the majority of fans gives me a bad taste in my mouth...instead of taking things calmly, they exaggerate by saying that Teto or Gumi SV is the best thing that ever happened in SynthV and that it's going to trample to Vocaloid only because they consider their banks better due to the inclusion of AIs and the realistic intonation they choose (In case someone forgets, remember that before this happened many considered Gumi's voice to be more realistic even if it was already from Vocaloid). No vocal synthesizer is going to be superior to another, what's more, if you are a fan of Stardust or Sora, you will know that they managed to please a number of fans in a healthy way, so why is there this hype with Teto and Gumi? Easy, SynthV fans are demanding iconic character voices to take on Vocaloid, because "Vocaloid is so horrible and bad that it didn't leave its Synthesizers free to update" I remind you, Vocaloid is not a single company, there are several those who work using this program so it is ridiculous to judge an entire program when they are executives and people who work on the decision of their Vocaloids, as I said before, do not look down on the voices and the program itself.
And my last point which would be the controversial one...the AI and the supposed realism that people ask for in Vocaloid. Fans of yesteryear will know that the essence of Vocaloid was always that of "a robotic voice that is programmed to sing." At what point did they ignore what it characterized Vocaloid? The thing is that with the advancement of AIs, people have forgotten that same meaning that Vocaloid represented, I see that SynthV is taking advantage of the use of these and that is why people ask for more, not only original voices of it, but they demand the extinction of Vocaloid so that its popular voices belong to them. This is not like in animation companies where one is buying and acquiring the products of another, like a certain company that is also being hated, the voice bank programs are free, even if Yamaha Corporation has the authorization of Vocaloid or in more cases variables, AH Software has authorization from Voiceroid, it is enough to do business with them so that Vocaloid can be distributed to other companies and so that they also have the decision to use SynthV or Cevio for their voice banks.
I'm not claiming which side is better, I'm just asking that there stop being wars and insinuations over these issues that Gumi has been suffering from being a prisoner of Vocaloid, GUMI was originally from it, what Internet Co does is give it more variety of programs ( which not only SynthV, we will probably see a Cevio GUMI in the future) and believe me this is not the first time this has happened, in this case it was distinguished by being a Vocaloid with variable banks and intonations. Speaking of the latter, I remind you that the program works depending on how it is used, yes, I see people complain that the banks they have are complex, but even with that, there are still people who are planning to use Vocaloid because they have brief experience and knowing the proper use for when a bank will be used, I'm also not saying that only Vocaloid experts are the only ones who can handle it, anyone can be capable, it just takes a real intention to use it as it should and not be bothered by it.
You can ignore my opinion if you don't like me or you're not interested, I know that many won't think the same as me, but keep in mind that if you continue with that disastrous attitude of "Vocaloid deserves to die" it won't amount to anything because that the general fandom of the Vocal Synths can be better than the reputation that SynthV is having and the defamation they give to Vocaloid, which was the one who started this trend of robotic idols that sing as I mentioned before. And seeing people asking for "realism" makes lose why Vocaloid should exist in the first place...

I wanna say a few things about Synthesizer V, because a lot of vocal synth fans, especially of mainly Vocaloid and UTAU, tend to misconstrue intent when it comes to wishing for vocals to migrate or cross-platform on the engine.
-It isn't about 'realistic,' or at least for the most part. It isn't about disliking their classic robotic sound just because of progress. I'm gonna say it- I do dislike Vocaloid 6. I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. But I don't hate Vocaloid in general, and want badly for the software to improve.
Banks like Gumi and Una got smoother transitions and (bad) crosslang... at the cost of getting put through a white noise factory. Their V4s were much clearer and even Gumi V3 English was far more reliable, while their V6 updates sound as though someone in the recording booth is rubbing styrofoam and the mic lacks a pop filter. Supposedly in the name of the iconic 'Vocaloid sound' that the type of engine noise doesn't even resemble. And for those who like the robotic sound and don't like SynthV because it's not, I've got news for you- you can have it without the fuzz.
For one, you can tune robotically in SynthV very easily. Tune entirely manually like any non-AI program, and since there's very little of that metallic twang, certain effects just move to mixing. Rather than taking out the sound of engine noise, it's putting certain things back in instead, which is a lot easier to do than the inverse- and the option of keeping things sounding more natural and clean without all that work is a huge bonus for people who don't think that sound fits their taste or style.
I personally love robotic-sounding vocals. But a clean, clear, and fluent base render output is essential to get the most out of your sound. I love Eleanor Forte R1/lite because that's what she is. Clean, clear, and fluent. But not realistic in any sense, unless compared to previous vsynths. She's probably just an Arpasing bank with higher render quality, but she's amazing regardless. And free too!
-Accessibility. SynthV is very accessible and easy to pick up. There's a limited version to try it out and make projects at the cost of fancy features that even allows commercial use, and many voicebanks have lite versions also with limited features and no commercial use. There aren't time limits on trying out the program- and just like Vocaloid, if you tune something with one vocal you can send it to a friend to render with another. Having lite voices to work with a lower quality version of the same voice that will render it means you actually know for the most part what you'll get, save for a couple quite old exceptions.
And when you do want full versions, it's dirt cheap. It's cheaper than Cevio, and far moreso than Vocaloid or Piapro. The two most expensive voicebanks on the program convert to roughly $120USD, and they're known for their special features and high quality. Most are 60-90 for digital, and SynthV voicebanks are feature-rich with the equivalent to appends already built in.
Full versions of AI voicebanks (the current gen) are also multilingual with little quality loss between languages, mainly just an accent. No need to purchase a separate English voicebank with no appends or deal with extremely clunky input and tuning. Currently four- (soon five!!) are options usable for any voice. Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, English, and when testing is done, Spanish will go from being exclusive to one bank to fully available.
It's also just generally very user-friendly. Especially if you dip your toes in with the basic editor before being barraged with all the features of pro, everything is laid out simply. While the UI could use a minor revamp because it's getting crowded and being able to resize the sidebars would be nice, there isn't really anything bad to say about it. As someone who'd hardly touched vocal synths myself, I knew how to work it in hours.
Oh, the autopitch. This one is contentious. There is a certain laziness to doing plug-n-play on a cover and calling it a day, just like with any other vocal synth. However, on originals, or working with it to make sure the voice cooperates, more time can be spent on phonemes, parameters, and mixing. Calling SynthV bad because it's just 'too easy' is gatekeeping vocal synths, plain and simple. Being able to make what you want without having to manually make every single pitchbend or fight with the program before getting to do anything more interesting is a way to make people more creative, not less.
-In regards to people complaining about the updates- aside from Stardust because of her limited copies and discontinuation, previous versions are still there! Dreamtonics doesn't give companies or individuals predatory contracts that force them to stop distributing older products with the same VP or wait for years to move. They're okay with their voices being on multiple engines and still supported. You'll still get your UTAU Teto, Renri, Oscar and XYY, Cevio Rose, Popy, and Kafu, and Vocaloid Gumi, Sora, Miki, and Kiyo. And you'll get your SynthVs!
Synthesizer V, Voicepeak, and Dreamtonics are not turning into a monopoly. Vocaloid still has tenure and the current version has a backlog spanning back to V3. Cevio has some heavy hitters that make it huge in Japan. Ace Studio is big in China and has the Vsingers. If you see characters coming to SynthV, that speaks of the quality of the program and its capabilities of bringing a wider audience. It has naturalness for those that want it, high quality render output, expressiveness, fluent English for marketing to the west, and Windows, Linux, and Mac support. There's nothing wrong with wanting options, and the companies know this. It's broadening the market, not vice versa.

Hello! Seen that Yuuma design discussion was coming, so.. i decided to insert my coin.
In my honest opinion, AI VOICE V.Y. Project Yuuma's design is not so mesmerizing, as VOCALOID official (Wakizashi) and famous fandesign (Roro 66) are more recognizable and iconic. They don't have to be laughed on, as if those were in the past.
AI VOICE V.Y. Project ≠ VOCALOID
P.S. You are nice artist, and it hurts to see that you have almost fallen to the level of those who say that "VOCALOID is dead. long live CEVIO, AI VOICE and SynthV!!11!". And for better understanding my point, recommend you to google "VY2" - results may like you.
oh no tumblr user the dragon girl 27 made one (1) meme about a vocaloid getting ported to a different software im sure that means she thinks vocaloid is dead and hates vocaloids
Tumblr media
also outside of that post and this one kafu drawing (with miku in it), this Maki doodle and some of the characters in the background of this one frame of this one fanmade mv i made, I have never really posted any art publicly of any non vocaloid syths so i have no clue where you got that impression from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also I dont get this us vs them mentality about voice syths, like you can be a fan of more than one software famsquad, we're all listening to singing anime robots at the end of the day.

I saw a few people saying they didn't recognize a lot of the vvv music characters and I think the reason is it's a very, very talkbank-heavy show!
A few characters are definitely new, but one reason why you might not recognize a large portion of them is that in the lineup, eight of them started out as talkbanks, seven only have a talkbank, and there's only one single character that doesn't have one.
If anyone's curious about who all these characters (talkbank or otherwise) are and how they may relate to characters you do know, I've made *unrolls paper* the promotional image into an extremely detailed infographic. The biggest icon is the engine they started out on, and the smaller ones are where they got banks after that.
Below the cut I break down the lineup, starting with Vocaloids and Vocaloid-related characters (+ UTAUS), then the singing characters from other engines (like SynthV), then the talkbank-only characters, telling you a bit about all of them.
Tumblr media
[ID: The VVV Music Live promotional graphic—an image with all of the performing characters in boxes—with text and icons over it detailing who the characters are and which engines they’re on, turning it into an infographic.
A guide to the engines at the top reads as follows: A. Singing: 1. Vocaloid, 2. UTAU, 3. CeVIO + Voisona (branched out into talkbanks too), 4. SynthV. B. Talking: 1. Voiceroid. A few V3-V4 Vocaloids were given talkbanks on Voiceroid (Una), some lining up with their release (Yukari, Sora). You can hear Yukari talking in some older Vocaloid songs for this reason. Some Voiceroids went on to get singing banks on Vocaloid (Zunko, Akari), and some eventually got singing banks on SynthV (Maki, the Kotonohas, Tsuina-chan). 2. A.I.VOICE. You may have recently seen Gumi and Zola Project get A.I.VOICE talkbanks. 3. Made Vocaloid Zunko’s pet human, gave SynthV Genbu and his friends talkbanks, introduced WhiteCUL. 4. VOICEPEAK. Various banks. C. Singing again: 1. NEUTRINO: Zunko’s sister, UTAU Kiritan, was their first bank. 2. CoeAvatar. See post. D. Morph: 1. Voidol, 2. Seiren Voice. Additional text reads “talk engines made specifically for one/a few vocal synths (like Gynoid Talk) are excluded.”
The characters are as follows: 1. Tohoku Itako. Started on UTAU. Also on Voiceroid, NEUTRINO, CeVIO, and Seiren Voice. Has a talkbank. 2. Zundamon. Pet form started on UTAU. Human form started on VOICEVOX. Also on NEUTRINO, Seiren Voice, and VOICEPEAK. Has a talkbank. 3. Tohoku Kiritan. Started on UTAU. Also on Voiceroid, NEUTRINO, and CeVIO. Has a talkbank. 4. Tohoku Zunko. Started on Voiceroid. Also on Vocaloid 3 and 4, Voidol, NEUTRINO, CeVIO, and VOICEPEAK. Started as a talkbank. Itako and Kiritan are Zunko’s sisters, and Zundamon is her pet. 5/6. Currently talkbank only. 10. Haruno Sora. Started on Vocaloid 5 and Voiceroid. Also on SynthV. Has a talkbank. 11. Tsurumaki Maki. Started on Voiceroid. Also on SynthV and CeVIO. Started as a talkbank. 12. ONE. Only on CeVIO. Has a talkbank. 13. IA. Started on Vocaloid 3. Also on CeVIO. Has a talkbank. IA and ONE are sisters. 14. Kasukabe Tsumugi. Only on VOICEVOX. Cousion of Vtuber Kasukabe Tsukushi. Talkbank only. 15. Kamui Gakupo. Started on Vocaloid 2. Also on Vocaloid 3 and 4. No talkbank. 16. Otomachi Una. Started on Vocaloid 4. Also on Vocaloid 6, Voiceroid, and Voidol. Has a talkbank. 17. Gumi. Started on Vocaloid 2. Also on Vocaloid 3, 4, and 6, Voidol, and A.I.VOICE. Gakupo, Una, and Gumi are Internet Co. Vocaloids. 18. On Voiceroid and CeVIO engines
You'll see that several synths here are from Voiceroid, which is a pretty old talkbank engine. If you're interested in Voiceroid characters like Yukari and Akari, Maki, Akane and Aoi, and others, producer GYARI was making iconic and comedic songs with them before they got songbanks, and I'd definitely recommend you check them out. A couple CeVIO related notes, several characters here have the CeVIO logo by them because they have CeVIO talkbanks, not necessarily singing banks, and Voisona is CeVIO's new engine. Onto the character explanations!
Vocaloids and Vocaloid-related characters / UTAUS
Vocaloid: Zunko. Originally created to promote disaster relief in the Tōhoku region, she's since gotten Voiceroid (talking) and Vocaloid (singing) banks, as well as a 24-minute animated movie. She has a Zunda mochi (green soybean rice cake) motif.
Itako and Kiritan are Zunko's sisters, introduced as UTAUs with newer voicebanks on Neutrino. Itako dreams of restoring her power of the nine-tailed fox, and Kiritan is a gamer.
Zundamon is Zunko's pet. They recently gave them a human form and a Neutrino voicebank, as well as multiple talkbanks.
Vocaloid: Sora. One of the only V5-introduced characters. Made a good impression by having a design where she looks like a pirate as well as a pretty, flowy one. Released with a Voiceroid talkbank.
Vocaloid: IA. Started out as a Vocaloid and was later released on multiple CeVIO engines. The CeVIO Vocaloid.
ONE (pronounced oh-neh, like how IA is ee-uh) is IA's sister. She's only on CeVIO engines.
Vocaloids: Gakupo, Gumi, Una. You probably know at least Gakupo and Gumi. Una, just because she's a little more recent, is a younger, eel-themed Vocaloid from the same company as the others (Internet Co.). She also got a Voiceroid bank.
Vocaloid: flower. Famous, androgynous. Got two Vocaloid banks before recently getting one on Cevio AI.
Vocaloid: Yukari. Moon rabbit theme and lots of voicebanks. A handful of famous songs, like There's Supposed to Be a Cheat Code for Happiness and Chururira・Chururira・Daddadda! Did some talking in a few older songs because she was a decently popular Vocaloid with a Voiceroid talkbank.
Akari is Vocalomakets's other Vocaloid, with a starlight theme. She also has a Voiceroid talkbank.
Vocaloid: CUL. She isn't part of the lineup, but she has sisters who are, so I'm covering her. Another Internet Co. Vocaloid, CUL started out as the mascot for the show VOCALO Revolution, which aired interviews with Vocaloid developers and producers, and showcased PVs. Videos featuring CUL used VY1's voice before she debuted as a Vocaloid herself.
ROSA and WhiteCUL are CUL's sisters. CUL was revealed to have several sisters, each named a variation of "CUL," except for ROSA. So far, only these two have designs and banks, and currently, they only have talkbanks, although ROSA is planned to get a SynthV voicebank.
You likely know Ritsu, a VIPPERloid UTAU, who went on to get voicebanks on DeepVocal and ACE Studio, as well as several talkbanks.
SynthV characters
Tsuina-chan is an ogre hunter. She started out on Voiceroid and eventually got a voicebank on SynthV.
Seika is the district mascot for Seika, Kyoto, Japan. She was a Voiceroid who later got a SynthV voicebank.
Rikka, Chifuyu, and Karin are three high school students in a music club. Rikka's character is up to interpretation, while Chifuyu plays drums, takes photos with an old camera, and dislikes sweetness, and Karin plays bass, likes archery and cute things, and dislikes matcha. All three have CeVIO talkbanks.
Akane and Aoi are twin Voiceroid talk vocals who went on to get SynthV voicebanks.
Maki is another Voiceroid vocal who got a SynthV bank. Like Kiyoteru, she also has a band comprised of characters that don't sing.
CeVIO singing characters
Sato and Tsudumi are friends who don't have a lot of interests in common. Sato started out with song and talk banks, whereas Tsudumi started out talk-only and got a songbank later on.
Talkbank only characters
Yuzuru is described as "kind and gentle, but rumored to be scary when angered," and "maybe not human." He started out on Voiceroid.
Maron's appearance is based chestnuts and autumn themes. He's currently only on A.I.VOICE.
Jashin-chan is from the series Dropkick on My Devil! She's currently only on VOICEPEAK.
Tsumugi is the cousin of Vtuber Kasukabe Tsukushi. She's only on VOICEVOX.
Nemu, and the engine her talkbank is on, CoeAvatar, have heavy NFT involvement.

why flower's image should be changed to her v4 design: a comprehensive explanation and argument
i'm wayyyy too dedicated to this vocal synth for my own good. please be open minded and take my points seriously because i spent like 2 hours typing this up
Tumblr media
flower's v4 design is easily her most iconic and recognisable design, and is well liked for several reasons:
her hairstyle, figure and outfit reflect her voicebank's androgynous tone - this is rare in vocal synths and makes her popular with nonbinary vocal synth fans like myself
her outfit has a distinct punk/goth style that was carried over from the v3 design and is suitable to her genre of music - vflower was created as a poweful vocal specialising in rock
it keeps several design elements introduced in v3: flat chest, messy white hair with a singular dark purple streak, vivid purple eyes, dark purple leather vest, choker and boots, as well as a bandage wrapped around one of the arms
flower's v4 voicebank is quite popular in the vocal synth scene as of now and has been used in a variety of well known songs, including goodbye sengen, venom, villain, lower one's eyes, bocca della verita, the list goes on. it would make sense to use the v4 design to represent flower, whose most popular voicebank is her v4.
in contrast, when ci flower was released, many original vflower fans felt upset and betrayed because of several major differences:
physical appearance
her hair is smooth and straight, and ends in a pink gradient. it has two purple streaks instead of one
her eyes are a different shape and an entirely different shade of cool blue
she has a visible chest
outfit
features a lot less purple and is visibly desaturated. has a decent amount of grey and orange, both colours that do not appear anywhere on the v3 and v4 designs
instead of being goth/punk inspired it is a very basic outfit that has a closer resemblance to casual/sportswear
lacks several vital design elements that make v3 and v4 recognisable as the same character
voicebank
people have complained that it sounds a great deal more feminine
most importantly, it lacks the power of v3 and v4, instead having more of a delicate, brittle quality that is easily drowned out by loud rock music
these factors combine to create a character who is completely unrecognisable to both the original v3 and v4 designs, both in terms of design and vocals. most people who know of flower consider them as different vocal synths and i've even seen one or two people saying that while they disliked the original vocaloid and thought it was too abrasive, they enjoy the ci variant for its softness and femininity. instead of adopting ci as the new representative design, the majority of original vflower fans have continued to use the v4 design + voicebank, and seem to go out of their way not to interact with content involving the cevio version.
several testimonials i have gathered:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in conclusion:
Tumblr media
*(also this is negligible but i think more people use the tag "vflower" than "flower vocaloid" and that way you might get a tiny bit more engagement)
i rest my case.
That's quite a passionate argument. However, I will not be changing the image used, otherwise I'd probably have to change the design for other vocals as well. If I went off of the design I liked best for a vocal, 1. it would not be V4flower and 2. vocals such as Miku and Tianyi would have different designs as well.
I'd also like to comment that the sound difference is not exclusive to flower. IA's CeVio AI voicebank sounds quite different to her Vocaloid bank as well. The difference in technology does alter quite a bit.
Most importantly though, this blog is for fun. Please don't take this too seriously. If you dislike the CeVio design so much, vote against her. You don't actually have to vote based on quality of voicebank(s).

her birthday/original release was technically a joke but i imagine they waited another day to announce it, renri and xia yu yao also got cevio/synth vbs so it's nice teto gets one too (even an updated/newer outfit would've been nice for fanartists). i'd love one for sekka yufu and nizimine kakoi too tho idk how active/if their original creators are still around to do some kinda contract/deal. adachi rei's vb has also had some popular songs done but i imagine some of the older ones would get an opportunity first since he came out a bit more recently compared to everyone (and ahs is selling teto, but hopefully that doesnt mean there won't be a focus on yuki/miku someday even with teto getting a lot of attention now)
I looked on synthv fandom wiki to make sure (I've been updating SynthV TVTropes page with each new voicebank as a hobby so if Synth V Teto was real I wanted to get her posted on there asap) and she's real!!! AAAH!!
I forgot about Xia Yu Yao being from UTAU but it's cool how we now have THREE SynthV voicebanks that were once UTAUloids! I hope we get to see more in the future. I think a Sukone Tei or Yokune Ruko voicebank would be interesting (especially the latter because of the whole "differently gendered versions" thing). I know Namine Ritsu has gotten a release in Ace Studio but I would have liked to see her in SynthV as well. (Yufu and Kakoi are also really nice voices and would probably do super well in synthv since it seems like Dreamtonics really likes softer voices.)
(I also kind of hope Yamine Renri gets an update at some point bc come on. She's not been touched since 2018-19. She badly needs an update or AI version or SOMETHING.)
So far my only "issue" with Teto's SynthV bank is that it sounds too human. I'm so used to hearing Teto sound robotic, even as a CVVC or VCV UTAUloid, that hearing her sound almost human is kind of jarring. But I'm sure once she drops people will figure out how to make her sound like classic Teto again. (Also I'm hoping someone makes a cover of Magnet between her and the Genbu-gender-swap-fake-Teto people have been doing.)
Overall though it's super cool to see such a UTAU icon get into SynthV!! Esp when you consider Kanru Hua's origins as the guy who made Moresampler. While I've not got the cash on hand to buy Teto when she comes out, I'm super excited to see what people cover with her new voice!!

Kizuna-ification of Hololive
There is a troubling development in the numbers.
Almost every metric in Hololive is down. M/V Views are down, Live Views are down (although it might not be), Superchats are down... and people are down as many are getting sick.
But there is one 'metric' that doesn't seem to be down, and that is merch. All merch seems to be sold out quickly and immediately.
So, what's the disparity? I'll answer with a different quandary.
Kizuna Ai went stagnant after around 2021, the subs stalling just below 3M, which she didn't reach until her 'retirement'.
But Kizuna Ai is still chugging along... in a sense. There is a CeVIO, there's a video game, there is an anime... lot of stuff is happening.
I remember someone saying Kizuna Ai is more of an icon than a VTuber now, and I think a similar thing is happening to Hololive. People are starting to move away from seeing them as streamers, and more... celebrity, basically? While it seems there will be fewer 3D events until 4thFes, so this might get turned around soon.
There is also the fact that there hasn't been new Hololive talent for ages, and probably won't be until 4thFes is over.

hi!! i’m a big vocaloid fan and love sharing my favorite music so i’m glad i stumbled upon this post :D
officially, vocaloid has very little lore, however that means the lore it does have is extremely complicated and nerdy. honestly, you don’t need to know a lot to enjoy the music (and don’t listen to the tryhards that say otherwise!!). for a quick explanation, i’d recommend ricedeity’s “Explaining Vocaloid in under 3 minutes” and Minnemi’s “(un)helpful guide to vocaloid”; Minnemi also has a ton of curated playlist videos, i personally love “100 Iconic VOCALOID Songs That Every Fan Should Know”, which contains a ton of iconic vocaloid music and producers! i agree with indisputablypercy too, even if you don’t play project diva you should check out a playlist of its songs to learn about the “biggest hits” so to speak (project sekai is more modern, and the covers can be hit or miss, usually a miss on the vocaloids-sounding-good aspect -_-)
for getting into the music, i’d recommend listening to youtube or spotify playlists in genres you already like (vocaloid itself is a genre, but it’s a HUUUGE one and you can find basically any type of music using vocaloid), look into the discographies of producers or vocaloids you like the sound of, and start figuring out what /you/ enjoy about vocaloid- it’s different for everyone!
not to be a shill, but if you want some easy recommendations i have my own playlists for general vocaloid, cevio (which is a vocaloid competitor with a sleek, futuristic aesthetic that i love), and character playlists for the vocaloids meiko, megurine luka, and mayu :3!
hope this helped! happy listening!
I’m currently trying to get more into/ starting to get into Vocaloid music so does anybody have song suggestions to get to know the genre (and lore that apparently exists) a little better?

Have you ever given it much thought; the seemingly perpetual question and discussion people seem to have over whether or not VOCALOID is "dead" and the like? It's become somewhat of a loaded question and there's a lot of intersections between different aspects of it that people tend to mesh together, like mixing in the phrase, "VOCALOID is dead" with the software, or the song culture, or people "using it as a stepping stone." What are your thoughts as an observer?
Oh? I haven't really thought about whether VOCALOID is dead, to be honest. On the contrary, I think the community is very much alive. It’s an interesting question. I’ll cover a few topics here, so get ready. This could be long.
Topics
Is VOCALOID “dead”?
VOCALOID, the singing voice synthesizer
VOCALOID, a versatile voice
VOCALOID demographic and culture
--
Is VOCALOID “dead”?
When people hear the term VOCALOID, what comes to mind? Hatsune Miku and her iconic twintails? Kagamine Len and Rin? KAITO? MEIKO? Megurine Luka? Is that all there is? A set of anime-looking characters?
That’s only the peak of the iceberg that is the VOCALOID community.
At what point does a culture become “dead”? When no one talks about it or remembers it?
I think it depends on the social media platform. Sure, it might not seem very prominent on Tumblr (which seems to me more media fandom-based, with more of its users being fans but not many active creators), but on Twitter there’s actually a lot of active VOCALOID creators, or rather creators that focus on VOCALOID: producers, illustrators, video editors, sound engineers, etc, both in the Japanese and English community alike. Even the amount I follow is just a fraction of it. It might still be a small (Twitter) community compared to… let’s say fandoms of popular video games or cartoons, but they’re there, alright. It's small and very art-focused, and I say art as in visual,  musical, and lyrical—aspects you’d usually find in music videos. And I find that tightly-knit community pretty comfortable as someone who enjoys short but concentrated forms of perhaps unconventional (?) multimedia storytelling (e.g. narrative animated music videos).
VOCALOID, the singing voice synthesizer
“Mixing in the phrase, ‘VOCALOID is dead’ with the software, or the song culture, or people ‘using it as a stepping stone’.”
That is a loaded question, and a good one. VOCALOID is so much more than just a singing voice synthesizer software, and even then there are other similar softwares like SynthV, UTAU, CeVio, etc. (Personally speaking I’m more familiar with SynthV since I’ve casually tried it out a few times. It’s quite complex but at the same time, the controls are what makes it powerful as a singing voice synthesizer. I think when people say VOCALOID, they don’t just mean the culture that comes with the VOCALOID software specifically, but any sort of vocal synth software (such as the ones I mentioned) applies too.
But anyway, the song culture, or rather the creative culture, specifically in terms of music. I mean, in the end, VOCALOID isn’t a genre of music, it’s a way to make music. And I’m no expert in musical subgenres or even genres, but I know this for sure: VOCALOID songs aren’t just pop songs with anime-style music videos.
VOCALOID and other similar softwares encourage creative freedom, since at their core is a set of singing voice synthesizers and voicebanks rather than one particular singer or idol, and thus producers aren't restricted to one single genre. It’s a tool—an instrument, even—for indie music producers, and I mean that in the best way possible.
VOCALOID, a versatile voice
This topic kind of came up when I was talking with a friend recently, but basically I mentioned that VOCALOID vocals can be pushed really far in songs depending on the genre, far beyond the default “cute” vocals fit for pop songs.
The high-pitched and perhaps sharp-sounding quality that typically comes to mind when one thinks about VOCALOID isn’t all that there is. It’s just as versatile as the human voice in expressing emotions, even if the technical aspect of tuning it is complicated.
And I mean, the idea of a singing voice synthesizer is pretty avant-grade, isn’t it? You’re controlling the very vocals of a virtual singer. I’ve mentioned I tried out SynthV a bit, but as I tried to play around and make a cover with it (it’s Neru’s “How To World Domination” if you wanna know which song), I became really conscious of how the human voice sings and how notes fluctuate for the first time. (Me studying phonetics in linguistics will only help in that understanding I believe.) Having knowledge on singing and the different musical genres definitely helps a VOCALOID producer or cover artist decide how they want the voicebank to sound.
In Utsu-P’s “I Thought I Was An Angel”, Miku sounds pretty soft or at least typical to how her voicebank is usually perceived but at around 3:18 she starts to metal-type screaming. I was really impressed when I first heard of it. (Note that lyrics talk about depression and self-deprecation.)
In one of his other songs, “Living Ghost is Alive”, V Flower also sounds powerful and eventually does metal screams (growling?) as well at 0:42 to 1:03 between lyrics. I feel like Flower’s voicebank works particularly well with heavier genres since she’s kind of similar-sounding to Len but with more texture… It’s really cool. (Note that video and lyrics has suicide and death inagery, and video contains flashibg lights.)
ippo.tsk is particularly good at tuning powerful and generally emotional vocals in SynthV (and previously VOCALOID with Len and Rin and CYBER DIVA) in my opinion. He’s the type that doesn’t stick to the perhaps cutesy default of the voicebank.
In ippo.tsk’s “rose-tinted bitter grudge” at around 2:03, he also makes Eleanor Forte do a growl which I believe is through one of the settings in SynthV’s parameter meter. (Note that the music video has sharp colours and flashing lights.)
Another example of powerful vocals is in their song “existing angel” at 2:08 — 2:55. The album version makes Len and Rin sound more crisp and clear without losing the power they had in the music video version. (Note that the lyrics talks about child abuse with regards to emotional/verbal abuse and the video has some flashing lights.)
VOCALOID, demographic and culture
Since VOCALOID is not a genre but rather a tool to make music, there’s naturally a wide array of genres when it comes to VOCALOID songs, in a similar way you can play a lot of genres on a guitar.
I am in no way an expert in the VOCALOID demographic and things like what genre is prominent in which era, but if you’re interested in that sort of topic, I’d recommend Oktavia / @symphonymermaid and Ye Sun / @RoboticReborn on Twitter.
Oktavia is an English cover artist who sings mostly obscure VOCALOID songs with amazing rhyme and rhythm in her translyrics and really goes in depth for translation and lyrical analysis for her lyrics. (I’ve talked about her cover of one of my favourite Neru songs, Datsugoku.) But at the same time, she talks about VOCALOID culture in terms of musical genres and obscure producers’ styles along with Project Sekai, the last of which I’m honestly not familiar with. (I can’t really put it in a more precise way than that personally, haha..) She even ran some popularity polls on which VOCALOID songs might be the most popular in certain “time periods”, which I found interesting. Nearly all the songs are the really popular ones that even I have heard of.
Ye Sun on the other hand, is a cosplayer and illustrator with a passion for VOCALOID and its culture as well. Most of his cosplay and illustration works are on Instagram but on Twitter, he sometimes talks about VOCALOID’s cultural significance in a much more sophisticated way than… anyone in the community that I’ve seen, in my opinion. It’s really interesting, some Tweets he’s made. He’s also really passionate about Ryuuseee’s character Bizu-kun in Neru’s song “SNOBBISM”.
But all in all, I’m not so well-versed in the idea of VOCALOID demographic and culture, so that’s all I can say here.

This ended up being really long, and it’s been sitting as a draft for some time, so I’ll just end this here. This has certainly been an interesting topic…
