WIP Wednesday

As an aside, today's a phenomenal day to be Wednesday, I got to the bit I was looking forward to 😆 (Shockingly, it's only Chapter Two!)

Gasps erupted overhead, as she emerged into the temple’s atrium. Some people stood from their pews, reacting, gesturing, her gaze turning to the altar. There, a girl in a flowing orange gown stood with the Chalice in hand, taking a step back from yet another meshai. The ground reverberated with her heartbeat, each beat stronger than the last. Eshani took a few steps forward. White, elongated bones broke through stained glass. A section rained down from the top corner, followed by another, where a murder of crows bled in and settled on the beams. The meshai turned to face it, reciting words and gestures. Noise from the crowd got louder, some of the front seated guests leaving. Eshani had the girl in her sights, rushing towards her. A girl in a purple dress pipped her, catching the other and teleporting away. “Cheyoria, no!” She swivelled her head, jaw dropping as she met the gaze of her former flame. The pair stood paralysed, staring into each other’s eyes with nary a word between them. “I- How?” The glass stopped raining. The arches of the temple echoed with caws, clashing with the chatter of the ground. Bones fell to the floor, some collapsing near the altar. The meshaika and acolytes emerged from downstairs, making her heart race. They coalesced into a group, where one of them narrowly avoided a white dropping from above. “What’s going on?” Her love looked up to her, his polar eyes wide and pleading for an answer. “Get down.” She clicked her fingers as the central doors burst open, sending all the flames out bar the torch behind the altar. A figure with straight crimson hair strode down the aisle, a cloak of crow feathers draped from her shoulders. Eshani held her breath as the crowd’s chatter wavered and wondered. “Explain the meaning of this, who are you?” The lead meshai stepped forward, stopped only by Eshani putting an arm in front of him. “Relax, I’ll handle this.” The other lady approached, standing slightly to the left. “What happened?” She whispered the events of the past while, putting extra emphasis on the actions of the meshaika. Behind her, the other group gasped as some of the bones started twitching and clicking back together. “Stop your tricks at once!” She moved a step in front of her, wincing at the meshai’s shot of magic. “This is not of our doing.” She said, while her fellow High Councillor moved to a central position at the altar, facing the crowd. The skeleton continued reassembling itself. “To the people gathered here tonight,” Claudia said, causing the crowd to hush. A raven perched on her shoulder. “I do not anticipate that any of you expected the events that transpired. Some of you may be worried, scared, shocked. I do not blame you, for you have been left in the dark regarding the matter.”

“No, hon, stay.” Welwi pats at Jules’s arm and signals Rune to bring another drink. “We’ve already set you up a character and everything.” “Yes, actually, you should stay.” A slow smirk creeps onto Jacqui’s face. “I’ve already written you in, anyway. And besides,” she stares sidelong at Vy, “I’m a merciful GM.” A chill tumbles down Vy’s spine. The last time Jacqui had seen fit to remind them of her mercy, they’d spent a real-time month stuck on the Island of Lost Souls. Fresh wine sloshes into Vy’s goblet. Rune shakes xir head and pats Vy on the shoulder. “Godspeed, Captain.”

“Sorry again.” Jules’s fingers tighten around the bulging folder in his hands. “For crashing your game.” “Don’t worry about it. What’s that?” Vy makes grabby hands at the folder and snags it as soon as Jules offers it up. They unravel the twine holding it shut—Jules must’ve had to raid a vintage craft store for all this paper—and find within a thick stack of notes. Some are typeset—printed, from an actual printer—and some are handwritten. They all make Vy’s eyes cross and their pulse throb behind their optic nerves.

Jacqui texts again. “Bringing your boytoy home?” And Vy wants to say ‘no’ to that. They should say ‘no.’ Not because Vy’s opposed to the concept of boytoys or bringing them home—they’re an enthusiastic supporter of both—but if whiling away an entire day on pining and ruminating and ritual and non-ritual cleansing hasn’t cleared up this weird fucking feeling they still get when they think of Julián, there’s no way they’ll be able to fuck it away. “Not planning on it,” is what Vy settles for.

“Behind me!” Lupe yanks Vy further into the shadows and takes off its glove. Pointed nails dig into its palm; blood wells and beads. With fingers pinched, Lupe pulls the blood through the air like thread through a needle. It arcs over their heads, slicing a scarlet line across the darkening sky. The blood hovers there, a shimmering scar, and then it grows. The red bleeds outward, arcing over them in a translucent pane. It touches the walls on either side of them, settles, and solidifies. Vy looks up; they're enclosed in a perfect dome of sanguine stained glass.

Emmett generally steps in to wrangle and relocate them more appropriately. Most likely to verbally eviscerate someone for something petty. Emmett. 100%. There isn't much to say afterwards. Professor Darzi and Doctor Aiza share uncomfortable glances as they prep her for a final test. "Just a sample," Doctor Aiza says as she stabs a needle into Nadia's forarm. "So we have a better timeline to gauge from." And as her blood floods through the intravenous tube and into a vial, Nadia tries not to think about how it looks like mud. She doesn't need to look Doctor Aiza's way to know the results will not be promising.

Herb

A half-wall separates the main room and the kitchen. A jar of herbs sitting on top catches Simone's eye. They can't decipher the scrawl, aside from a line at the bottom highlighting its purpose. Nausea and pain relief. Their stomach twists in sympathy. Nadia's symptoms have been worsening for weeks now.

Strike

The snap of banners on the towers catches their attention, taking them back to their first days on the Voterique campus. Oh, how excited they had been to enter a college as prestigous as this, how delighted they had been after the first four years to acquire their Casting license. How the rainbow of banners and capelets had caught their eye as they chose a specialization after. Blue for Abjuration, purple for Divination, black for Necromancy, yellow for Transmutation, orange for Conjuration, grey for Illusion, red for Evocation, and... Green. The banners of the Enchantment tower strike at the wind like an agitated snake. Returned to the present, Simone eyes the fabric with their lip between their teeth. They can't make sense of the sigils they have, but perhaps...

She snaps back to with a gasp. Etienne waves a hand over her eyes, forehead wrinkled in a way she knows he'll complain about later. Shaking herself free of her lust-addled daze, she sighs. "I'm sorry, Etienne. What were you saying?"

Notes-

corus's bola is replaced with a staff/spear

ceph doesn't have the heart marking on her left eye anymore and thus no eyepatch as a civilian (does corus have the eye marking instead? who knows! i never draw the other eye anyway i mean WHAT)

corus's name is now corvus (like the constellation)

ceph's name is now leah

corus's hero name is celeste instead of corvid (family name for crows and ravens..)

leporidae is the family name for rabbits and hares (see what i did there?)

"Why do their civilian names change?" Because they've swapped parents. Do not ask how corus's parents had a child not of the same race. (Ceph is very clearly not pure chinese) Adoption or something

“What did you learn?” Ashan asks. 

“Nothing.  Not yet,” she hastily amends at the sight of an elegantly arched eyebrow.  “Data’s all been collected, yeah.  But it’s still processing.”  She gestures to the loading bar that’s appeared on the screen. “Going to be a bit for the computer to translate it all into something human readable.”

“Is that normal for using a computer, or is this supposed tattoo on the back of my neck truly so complex?”

“A little of both?  But mostly it’s because I scanned a whole bunch of extra data while I was at it.  Once it’s done we’ll have a full physical and metaphysical baseline for you that we can use for comparison if you ever get sick, injured, or cursed or something.  Should make the healing process easier, having a save state to restore your body back to.  Could probably even duplicate the enchantments on your robe if it ever gets lost or damaged.”

A flicker of… some emotion… crosses Ashan’s face.  Impressed?  Bemused?  Annoyed?  Offended?  Did she say something wrong?  Is talking about replacing a wizard’s robes some kind of taboo?  Or is she reading too much into it?  Once again Lacuna silently curses herself for being so incompetent at reading people.  It doesn’t help that whatever the expression was came and went so quickly, like a tiny ripple subsumed by a great lake.  Except the Great Lakes are large enough that they probably have all sorts of waves and currents so probably not a good analogy for Ashan’s -

Oh goddess she did it again; zoned out while facing in someone’s direction so it looks like she’s staring.  She spins her chair back around to keep the creeping redness in her face toward the computer monitors and away from Ashan.

“No.  Nothing on your face.  Well, other than makeup, obviously.  And that’s fine.  Perfect even.  I was just thinking hard.  About a thing.”   Did she just call his makeup perfect to his face?  Someone kill her now, please.

"Let me past." She stumbled backwards, meeting the gaze of the High Councillor below. The glint in his golden eyes and the sharp upturn of his lips told her everything, she had to go, her days were numbered, she had to–

Flow(ing)

From Obsidian Sapphires, a random snippet shortly after the inciting incident

"Alycja, where are you going?" Cheyoria's voice trailed behind her.

She winded through the dissipating crowd, a cold calm flowing through her. "There's something I need to do."

"What is it?" The path ahead became more forested, lined with towering oaks and hazels. Little sprites leapt from branch to branch, avoiding the crows perched in wait.

Above

"Something important." A million eyes, seen and unseen, bore their weight on her. Caws, cackles, chatters, all clattering and crackling. Magic rising and falling, embers to ashes, her throat constricting— "It's to resolve the other night."

The tree canopies brushed against each other, a cover of green and a cacophany of corvids. Branches held each other as the hands of the eternal; long-lived, primordial gods, standing above all other life, their looming presence swallowing the light and space around them.

Grow(ing)

Under a circle of stalwarts, her friend breached the growing silence. "Please tell me it's not with who I think it is."

Alycja refrained her step from the stone circle. She turned her neck, looking up into the storm of worry in her friend's eyes. "And if it is?"
