A quick work-week post!
Hello, everyone! Greetings for a happy Friday! I swear this is going to be a brief post. I am currently on a train to Turku, Finland, on the west coast of Finland, for a two-day Fulbright event.
This coming week is the kids' Fall break -- and mine too! Everyone has a full week off. I wasn't quite aware of this, regarding my students at the university, but when planning my course, I canceled class for this Wednesday, because my colleagues told me that it is customary to cancel a class or two during a semester. I thought a good one to cancel would've been during my kids' Fall break. As it turns out, I was supposed to cancel it anyway! We have family coming to town -- Kaj and Tina -- on Saturday night, right after we arrive back to Tampere from Turku. We will will have a great week with them, I know! We will get to do some exploring around Finland, since everyone will be on break :)
Now, since Thursday night was Fall break eve, as it were, there were so, so many university students in their university overall, in throngs, all over central Tampere. I guess there was some university student party in the central square and I heard from one of the Fulbright graduate students that it is like the world's largest student party (maybe not the world's but pretty darn big! See here)! Now that I know that, I totally believe it! There were hordes of people out last night so when I was making my way down Hameenkatu on the way home from ballet, I was squished in to a very busy tram car to get home.
Ballet has been going well. I am very glad I've been getting to go once a week. My ballet teacher, Sari, has had a hip that has been paining her so much. This is very common among lifelong dancers. She found out this week that she needs a hip replacement, because the cortisone shots she was getting will no longer address her pain. She told me last night that she is getting a hip replacement in two weeks. I was surprised that it was scheduled so soon! She said she is using a private doctor, because she has insurance. I am not sure how this works at all. We would use private doctors here, if we were to take ill or get injured. The national healthcare system, Kela, is something we're not eligible for since we're only paying US taxes, not Finnish taxes.
What else was notesorthy this week . . .
Well, of all things, I woke up this morning (Thursday) to messages from friends in New Mexico with images of gorgeous pink and red aurora borealis over New Mexico!! I was gobsmacked!! I have wanted to see the aurora forever and I figured, well, Finland will make that happen. Nope! The solar activity has been very high this week (which is why the aurora extended as far south as New Mexico), but there has been so much cloud cover here, we have not been able to see anything. I am counting on seeing the aurora somewhere, somehow, while we're this far north, sometime before next June.
Rowan had a big Spanish test this week and Spanish has been his biggest challenge here. He had Spanish class in elementary school, but it was really phrase-based (not systematic grammar) and vocabulary, and it introduced the kids to cultures across Latin American and Spain. Here, I swear it seems like high school Spanish. The jump-up has been so intense. But, we started this week concertedly working with him, and he thinks he did OK on this test.
Cece has really been eager to get some Halloween decorations and we intended to do that this week -- but the week got away from us. We will do it over Fall break, as soon as we get back from Turku. It won't rival the extent of our Albuquerque decorations, but we will do something! The parents association at the kids' school here started advertising and recruiting volunteers for the annual Halloween party, which is the biggest school event of the year. The kid are excited! Cece wants to be Kitty, from the Kitty books. I am not sure what Rowan wants to be!
Also, I made three apple cakes this week, and applesauce, from the apples we collected at the allotment community. Also, I went to a "works in progress" group comprised of English literature and comparative literature faculty and Ph.D. students. We discussed a chapter of Johnny's (I mentioned him last week), which is a part of the book he is writing about interrupted railway journeys in United States and Canadian film and literature. The chapter was so interesting to discuss!
Well, I will sign off and I write again soon with some highlights from the Fulbright event in Turku! Hope the Fall colors (and auroras! arg!!!) are beautiful wherever you are!

What is CBSE?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a national-level board of education in India for public and private schools, controlled and managed by the Government of India. Established in 1962, CBSE has grown to become one of the largest educational boards in the country, affiliated with over 24,000 schools in India and abroad.
Curriculum and Syllabus
CBSE follows a uniform curriculum across all its affiliated schools, which ensures consistency in education. The curriculum is designed to foster holistic development, focusing not just on academics but also on extracurricular activities and life skills. Here are some key features of the CBSE curriculum:
Subject Variety: CBSE offers a wide range of subjects, allowing students to choose combinations that suit their interests and career goals. Core subjects include Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English, and a second language.
Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE): This system emphasizes regular assessment throughout the academic year, rather than relying solely on final exams. It includes formative assessments (quizzes, projects, presentations) and summative assessments (end-term exams).
Skill Development: CBSE places a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Practical knowledge and application are prioritized over rote learning.
National-Level Competitive Exams: The CBSE curriculum is aligned with national-level competitive exams such as JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), making it easier for students to prepare for these exams.

Faculty: Qualified and experienced teachers are crucial for delivering quality education. Check the faculty’s credentials and teaching experience.
Infrastructure: A good school should have modern infrastructure, including well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and sports facilities.
Extracurricular Activities: Look for a school that offers a variety of extracurricular activities to support the holistic development of students.
Student-Teacher Ratio: A lower student-teacher ratio ensures personalized attention and better support.
Parental Involvement: Schools that encourage parental involvement in the education process have a more supportive and effective learning environment.
Reviews and Feedback: Seek feedback from current and former students and their parents to get an honest perspective on the school’s strengths and weaknesses.

Renowned for its world-class universities, diverse culture, and high standard of living, Australia offers a wealth of opportunities for international students. If you’re an Indian student looking to pursue your education in Australia, this guide will take you through the essential steps to ensure a smooth application process.
 1. Research and Choose Your Course and University
Before starting your application, it's crucial to conduct thorough research on the courses and universities that interest you. Australia is home to several prestigious universities, including the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, and the University of Sydney. Here are some factors to consider:
Course Content: Ensure the course aligns with your career goals and interests.
University Rankings and Reputation: Look at global rankings, but also consider specific departments.
Location: Consider the city’s climate, cost of living, and lifestyle.
Facilities and Support Services: Check what kind of academic and personal support is available for international students.
 2. Understand the Admission Requirements
Each university and course may have specific admission requirements. Generally, the requirements include:
Academic Qualifications: Most undergraduate courses require a completion of 12 years of schooling (equivalent to Australian Year 12). For postgraduate courses, a relevant undergraduate degree is typically required.
English Language Proficiency: Non-native English speakers must prove their proficiency through tests like IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic.
Additional Requirements: Some courses may require work experience, portfolios, or interviews.
 3. Prepare the Necessary Documents
Once you know the requirements, gather all necessary documents. Commonly required documents include:
Academic Transcripts: Certified copies of your academic records.
English Language Test Results: Scores from IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.
Statement of Purpose (SOP): A letter explaining your motivation for choosing the course and university.
Letters of Recommendation: From teachers or employers.

4. Apply to Your Chosen Universities

Check the eligibility criteria and deadlines for each scholarship and apply accordingly.
6. Receive and Accept the Offer
After submitting your application, the university will assess it and, if successful, send you an offer letter. There are two types of offers:
Conditional Offer: You must meet certain conditions (e.g., final exam results).
Unconditional Offer: You’ve met all the entry requirements.
To accept the offer, follow the instructions in the offer letter, which usually involves signing the acceptance form and paying a deposit.
