If I Could Live to be 200...
Thanks to Wikipedia, I learned that Li Ching-Yuen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Ching-Yuen is said to have lived more than 200 years on a diet that included gotu kola, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centella_asiatica. This creeping groundcover is edible in addition to being a medicine known in Chinese, Ayurveda, and African medicine for a variety of beneficial uses. Ed Bernhardt http://thenewdawncenter.info/about-us.html gave me starts of this plant three years ago. It has now taken over our keyhole, sunshine and kitchen gardens.
I wonder how evolved our gardens and food-forests would be if I could continue playing in the dirt with plants past age 100. I’m continuously reminded that the work is never done. Now at nearly five years, you can feel the temperature drop and freshness in the air as you walk through the duck gate entrance.
Permaculture teaches us to seek out and learn from the wisdom of nature in these universities of life. Working with the laws of nature, we can co-create productive and beneficial ecosystems. When tuned into our senses, we notice a difference inside an established forest or other natural area. The vastness of life forms and time stacked within all that complex life-giving diversity took eons to build.
There are no price-tags, or spreadsheets counting the value of inventory that could fill gigabits of data in a square inch of old growth forest. It can be cleared in minutes for dollars in computers that could never equal the value of living soil in the life of this finite planet. The “money fairy” doesn’t compensate me for my endless labor of love, but living and working in nature is beyond rich in rewards.
This concept becomes more clear to our modern western minds through our association with Danilo, our friend from the Boruca community who visited last week. http://www.boruca.org/en/about-boruca/ Walking with us down the trail to our little cabina, we imagined the generations living there before as he identified fruit trees and medicinal vine growing on that location’s flat overlook near a creek. He also pointed out that one of our pieces of ancient pottery unearthed in the process of trail-building is in the shape of an ant-eater head.
Danilo’s grandparents passed to him their oral history through generations from the beginning of memory. At 60 after a recent bout of illness, he realizes that if he does not record these stories, they will be lost. I offer to help him save his work into electronic form so that history from before the Spanish arrived is remembered and shared.
We sit at the table with a computer with Braca and Karlee helping capture the words. He asks, “where to start?” and our translation skills quickly find their limit as he treads into mythical concepts through two languages. “(Is he talking about elves?”) One story leads to another and another, and it becomes clear that this is going to take more time, so he decides to begin writing it all down in Spanish in a theme book he can take with him.
I go back to transplanting trees into the next size larger nursery bag to make it to May’s rainy season, overloading a rotting table under the shade cloth that caves in, dumping all the newly planted loose (our own home-made over time beautiful) soil and trees into a heap. Danilo has had enough sitting by then. He looks into Pete the Cat’s eyes, and declares that it is a good time to cut timber and build a stronger table. I had no idea that cat’s eyes get narrow at low tide. It is common knowledge here that you only cut timber wood during the waning moon at low tide to keep it from being eaten by bugs.
The last two days brought a few drops of rain, not enough to ease up on the watering, but cooled things slightly after a dry month. I am grateful for Braca and Charlotte helping to keep things watered and growing, and for Karlee to help manage it all. Juan’s shoulder is still healing, so Leo’s son, James is partnering with his dad during what is for him, summer break. He goes back to school next week, after time with the family to the beach.
I’m off to be with my family, after five months of intense gardening, trusting that five months of intense gardening is in good hands over another hot dry month.
Pura Vida
