RUNDOWN FOR THOSE WHO MISSED IT:
so. the film is, of course, titled We Can Never Go Back. its co written by Aminah Hughes and Dylan Kussman, starring Dylan Kussman as "Zig" and Allelon Ruggiero as "Dean". other key creatives are cinematographer Rachael Kilman and Ash Gibson Greig with screen composition.
its a 12 minute proof of concept for a feature length film, inspo taken from a ton of directors (including peter weir!) its set in the not so distant future in a desert environment, sorta post apocalyptic/ currently apocalyptic type beat? no zombies tho, just illness, covid inspired surely, overhanging threat nonetheless.
zig (dylan's char) is a nostalgic, sentimental, family oriented guy, sorta stuck in place as he's living in this cabin waiting on a call/ msg from his wife + daughter who were sick with [illness] last time he saw them.
dean (al's char) is a soft spoken/ humorous guy who was hardened from his experience of this sorta hellscape state of the world. he's been travelling on foot for quite a while but is still hopeful for the future after hearing of a safe haven of sorts.
dean arrives at zig's cabin and after proving that he isn't sick, they stay together for a bit. conflict of interest arrives with dean wanting to travel to this safe place while zig wants to stay behind and wait for a msg from his family, but there's only one car to travel with between them. dean's convinced zig's family is a lost cause and tries + fails to get zig come to that conclusion too. dean eventually tries to steal the keys to the car and travel on his own, but zig grabs an axe and is like RAHHH U CANT GO!!!! but then eventually dean is finally able to convince zig that there's no hope with his family and they leave together in said car. but! end shot of zig's phone he left behind getting a call from none other than his wife.
thats the plot of the short film itself but that's just the beginning part of the feature film itself. we've gotten SOME info on the rest of the film so ill share what i was able to get down.
- safe haven is a women's only (i think) matriarchal society which is p awkward for two dudes in their 50s
- film focuses on some issues with patriarchal society, i asked aminah if her experience as a woman in film influenced the writing - yes.
- def touches on some toxic masculinity stuff, definitely a lot less violent than a lot of masculine centered films.
- overarching themes of friendship, healing from traumas, and hope despite said traumas.
if this sounds like something you're at all interested, you can visit this page to find out a bit more + donate to the project if youd like. the first $5k in donations will be matched by an anonymous donor! DONATIONS GIVEN WILL BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE - YOU CAN WRITE THEM OFF!!
