Celebrate the opening of The Obama Portraits Tour with an afternoon of music, art-making, and poetry in honor of these vibrant and groundbreaking depictions of American leadership. Enjoy a musical tribute by the legendary Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, who present a smorgasbord of diverse “avant groidd” musical idioms filled with sugar-soaked sonic ingredients, followed by a DJ set from Niara Sterling. Kyle Carrero Lopez, Nkosi Nkululeko, and celeste doaks read their original poetry presented in partnership with Cave Canem, Brooklyn’s leading organization dedicated to cultivating the artistic growth of Black poets. Plus, get your photo taken as part of a community portrait project by Souls In Focus. Throughout the day, drop by for art-making with Cool Culture and shop and snack at the Brooklyn Pop-Up Market, which is spotlighting local Black artists and vendors this week.
This outdoor event is free, but RSVP is required. To visit the galleries, please reserve tickets in advance. A limited number of timed tickets will be available on-site on a first-come, first-served basis.

Review: “Not Without Our Laughter” by the Black Ladies Brunch Collective
Tumblr media
“I am going out in the world resolved to act boogaloo and bug-eyed…” begins the first poem, “Leaving the House” by Anya Creightney, setting the pace for the work that follows in Not Without Our Laughter: Poems of Humor, Joy & Sexuality by the Black Ladies Brunch Collective.
The Black Ladies Brunch Collective (BLBC) began as a social group of six writers from Baltimore, Virginia, and Washington, DC, who met for brunch on Sundays to enjoy each other’s company and support each other’s work. In the Spring of 2016, BLBC presented a group reading at Split This Rock poetry festival titled “Not Without Laughter,” inspired by the title of a Langston Hughes novel. “We wanted to do progressive poems of humor,” said poet Celeste Doaks. After the reading, audience members wanted more and asked the poets if they had any books for sale. “Out of that panel, the book was born.”
The resulting book is Not Without Our Laughter: Poems of Humor Joy & Sexuality. The collection, edited by Doaks, includes work from the six Collective poets: Doaks, Saida Agostini, Anya Creightney, Teri Ellen Cross Davis, Tafisha Edwards, and Katy Richey.

What are the poems we would write if we were free? The African American Museum in Philadelphia partners with the Institute of Contemporary Art to present a masterclass with the Black Ladies Brunch Collective. This event is Saturday November 4, 2017, 10:00 am at the ICA at Penn.
Poems of Humor, Joy & Sexuality is workshop for Black women of all experiences who are ready to grapple with the page, yet fear the stories within them - for whatever reason. We will use all of our senses, poetic devices, storytelling, and love to say with courage the words we have been unable to claim until now. The Black Ladies Brunch Collective members will share their creative journeys, and discuss the importance of honoring and loving our true selves through the medium of poetry - as well as the cost of the speaking the truth. Master Class participants will create new material, share their work in a supportive community, and come away with new tools to build affirming spaces for Black women poets. This is an LGBTQ inclusive space.
The Black Ladies Brunch Collective's Poetry Anthology, “Not Without Our Laughter,” is a collection of humorous and joyful poems, riffing on Langston Hughes’s novel “Not Without Laughter.” It explores topics of family, work, love and sexuality. The women of BLBC believe, like Hughes, that even in these currently tense racial times, laughter and the celebration of life is crucial. Historically, it is what African Americans have done and will continue to do, no matter what challenges face them. The Black Ladies Brunch Collective is Teri Cross Davis, Anya Creightney, Katy Richey, celeste doaks, Saida Agostini, and Tafisha Edwards. This program is presented in conjunction with AAMP’s fall exhibition “Gardens of the Mind: Echoes of the Feminine View” and ICA’s exhibition “Speech/Acts." RSVP here.
