Celebrating integration! Living in an adopted country where you don’t share the language or the local faith system is all about #tolerance, #acceptance and #inclusion …. whilst I now speak the language, my Spanish neighbours were incredibly patient with me in the early days and tolerant of my ignorance of so many of their ways. My Spanish neighbours were delighted that I was keen to learn and integrate. They accepted our differences and thought no less of me for not sharing their beliefs. I respected their ways and celebrated their tradition and culture… I was always included in their festivities. That said, tonight when the fireworks celebrate the blessing of the fishermen’s boats in La Herradura, I have to admit that this year I will be curled up on the sofa with my doggie. At 11 and a half years old, Dai-dog doesn’t enjoy the bangs anymore. Here is a video of last year’s display. Watch it to the end and I dare you not to go “ooh ” and “aah ”!!!

Celebrating simple pleasures. May 2020 should have been a busy month with 1 vow renewal, 2 elopements, 3 weddings and a Spanish Catholic ceremony translation.

Venues included the beach in Torremolinos, a sea wall in Malaga, a villa in Benhavis, a finca in Marbella, a church in La Herradura and an undisclosed location in Granada.

All are delayed pleasures to look forward to at another date.

Living on the border of the Costa Tropical (Granada) with the Costa del Sol (Malaga) I am perfectly placed to officiate all over Andalucia when restrictions lift of course!

Meanwhile, I am taking full advantage of only sharing the coastal village where I live with other locals (no one allowed to travel yet, so no visitors), where the walking is great, sun is hot and the beers are ice cold!

There are no exams to pass, no tests to sit and no official legal standards to adhere to. Choosing the person who officiates the very heart of your wedding ceremony is therefore very important. TIP 1) Do they have a legal business? Are they registered as "autonomo" (self employed) in Spain or working unofficially under the radar? TIP 2) What do other people say? Ask for references or read the reviews and testimonials of previous couples. TIP 3) Reach out to a few potential wedding celebrants with legitimate businesses and great reviews to see if you receive an auto response or a personal reply. TIP 4) Speed date your celebrant! Ask to meet a couple of celebrants face-to-face either online via a video chat or in person, to see if you get along. TIP 5) Go with your gut reaction. Celebrating delayed pleasure! A wedding planner with confidence. A team of suppliers with patience. And a wedding couple who loved the the outdoors, trekking and camping in the elements. Mother Nature added something very special to this wedding when she sent a thunder storm over the mountains of the Sierra Nevada with warm rain falling just when this cortijo ceremony was due to start. No one was in a rush. We waited. The Spanish guitarist played quietly in the entrance to the cortijo. I settled into a corner and read through my ceremony. The guests chatted and laughed in excited expectation. And the bride and groom no doubt enjoyed an extra glass of cava.
