Life on the Move: The Joy of Travelling Beyond the Tourist Trail
Play this song while you read this post.
Hi everyone. Been awhile.
A lot of people talk about wanting to travel. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to explore all that the world has to offer? I certainly do! But travel means different things to everyone, and there’s no right or wrong way to define it. My version might just be a little different from yours.
Lately, I’ve been swamped with work. I’m actually managing 80 people, with 20 reps in each class every day, while interviewing candidates for the next wave of classes. Add in my back-and-forth trips between Manila and Quezon twice a week, and you’ve got a recipe for a sleep-deprived hustle. Yet, planning my upcoming travels has become my lifeline—a much-needed escape and something I genuinely love to do, alongside earning and saving.
I’ve just booked three international flights in the next five months and started sorting out work permit, visa, and finances to kick off my new life in a country I’ve chosen to settle in for good. It’s a lot to handle, and of course, I want to cherish my remaining time here in the Philippines with the people I love and doing the things I enjoy—like traveling.
When I say “traveling,” I’m talking about going outside the country. I’m not a huge fan of local trips; those feel ordinary since my family often visits relatives in Davao and Cebu. It’s easy and routine, and I crave a bit more adventure.
As I plan my itinerary, I find myself pondering where to go and what to see. Booking those three international flights in one day was fueled by my desire for peace and serenity. I want to clear my mind of everything that weighs me down and rediscover genuine happiness. That’s why I’m looking for places that are quiet and enchanting, where I can see things I’d never encounter in my everyday life. I want to fly and create memories that will leave a lasting impression on my heart.
I want to craft a life of travel.
When I say I want to travel, I’m not talking about hitting every tourist trap or buying a tacky souvenir t-shirt. I don’t want to just stroll down main streets or eat at every popular restaurant that pops up on Google. I’m not interested in staying at fancy resorts or following local tour guides around. I’m here for something deeper.
What I really want is to get lost—not in a “my GPS led me astray” kind of way, but in a beautiful, wandering sense. I want to soak in my surroundings, uncover hidden treasures unique to each place, and discover cozy coffee shops and quaint bookstores. I want to trek to old landmarks in the mountains and embrace as many new experiences as I can.
I envision packing a backpack with just the essentials, sleeping in tents, hostels, or even my car as I roam through different towns in various countries. I want to crash in places that few people have ever heard of. My goal is to turn my dreams into reality, to experience a life stripped down to simplicity, free from societal pressures and the weight of unnecessary stuff.
I yearn to meet people who are different from me yet somehow relatable. I want to dive into their cultures and understand their ways of life. Learning about their history and immersing myself in new languages excites me. I hope to find lifelong friends across the globe.
I want to be in constant awe of this planet and everything it offers. I want to witness sights I never thought possible and try experiences that have only lived in my dreams. My curiosity should grow stronger with every adventure. I want to absorb every skyline and relish the solitude of unfamiliar places.
When I return home, I don’t want to feel complete; I want to feel like I’ve left pieces of myself scattered around the world. I want to look beyond what’s in front of me and grasp the complexities of the world we inhabit. I want to satisfy my wanderlust, knowing that even if I somehow dislike the traveling life, I can always come back home.
But until I’m out there, exploring and fulfilling this desire inside me, I won’t be satisfied.
When I say I want to travel, I mean I want to experience everything. Because in the end, experiences are far more valuable than anything money can buy.
So, here’s to the adventures that await! Life is too short to stay in one place. Let’s pack our bags, hit the road, and discover the magic out there!

I am going to the philippines for about a month is there any places you would recommend. For the first two weeks we'll be based in manilla and then we might visit some other places in the country.
hi! sorry for answering this late. I'd like to say that Metro Manila is certainly not on the list of places I would recommend for tourists 😅 I love this city, it’s my birthplace and hometown, but I personally think the Philippines is best experienced outside of the capital.
still, since you say you're staying here for two weeks, these are the places around the metro that you can visit:
If you’re into art and museums:
National Museum of Fine Arts / National Museum of Natural History - they're close by each other so it’s possible to visit in one day
Ayala Museum - love their exhibits and dioramas
Pinto Art Museum - best for contemporary art; 1-2hrs from Manila depending on traffic
If you’re into culture and history:
Binondo Chinatown - oldest Chinatown in the world. pretty cool melting pot of chinese, filipino and western cultures. cheap food.
Intramuros – if you want a taste of the country during our Spanish colony era (NOTE: try to look for tours of Binondo and Intramuros so you’ll get the full experience and context into our history)
If you're into the nightlife
Poblacion, Makati
BGC
If you’re into shopping
Glorietta
Greenbelt
Mall of Asia
SM Aura
Greenhills
outside of Metro Manila, there's a loooot (and I mean, A LOT) of places to visit because we literally have 7,000+ islands lol. these are, I would say, a few of the easier ones for tourists to go to and enjoy:
Palawan – crystal clear waters, hidden lagoons, seafood. the landscape views here are BREATHTAKING, I swear you won’t regret it. go to either Coron or El Nido if you do choose to visit.
Siargao – lovely, laidback island globally known for surfing. the people and vibe here are perfect for those who would like to take a step back from the daily grind.
Bohol – white beaches, adventurous activities, natural wonders. you can find the Chocolate Hills and the Tarsier (also known as the world’s second smallest primates) Sanctuary here
Cebu – this province is huge so there’s lots of things (diving, whale shark watching, canyoneering: you name it) and islands to go to.
Boracay - okay, so this is perhaps the most popular beach destination here, so it's definitely more expensive than other places. the upside is it's also more developed and tourist-friendly (the nightlife on the island is great!)
there are pristine beaches and magnificent views here almost everywhere you go, and all the places I listed above are ripe with those. the Philippines is beautiful, and I hope you're able to discover even a portion of that beauty during your stay. enjoy your trip here!
*all photos in this post are NOT mine, i just stole them from google lol. credits go to all their respective owners*

Traverse the azure waters of Bantayan Island, revel in the serenity of Camotes Islands, or dive into the marine wonderland of Sumilon Island. With each destination offering a tapestry of natural wonders, island hopping promises an unforgettable odyssey filled with awe and wonder.
Cultural Tours

Pay homage to Magellan's Cross, explore the ancient ruins of Fort San Pedro, or wander through the bustling streets of Carbon Market. With every step, you'll uncover the essence of Cebu's vibrant past and dynamic present, leaving you with a profound appreciation for its enduring legacy.
Navigating Cebu's Safety Landscape
Health Precautions
Prioritize your well-being by staying informed about health precautions and advisories before embarking on your Cebu adventure. Ensure you have the necessary vaccinations and medications recommended for travel to tropical destinations, and take appropriate measures to protect yourself from common ailments such as sunburn and dehydration.
Crime Awareness
While Cebu is generally safe for tourists, exercise caution and vigilance when exploring unfamiliar areas, especially during nighttime. Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying valuables in public places to minimize the risk of theft or petty crimes. By staying alert and aware of your surroundings, you can enjoy a worry-free experience in this enchanting destination.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FLASH REPORT: 'IShowSpeed' suprisingly returns to Cebu City and concludes the South East Asia tour [#OnlyOnOneNETnews]
(Written by Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / Freelance News Writer, Online Media Reporter and News Presenter of OneNETnews)
CEBU CITY, CEBU -- A whirlwind finale of IShowSpeed's South East Asia tour ended in a surprise return to Cebu City on Wednesday (September 25th, 2024 -- Cebu local time).
Darren Jason Watkins Jr. (popularly known online as 'IShowSpeed'), kicked off his 3rd and final day of his tour in Cebu around 5pm, just like he promised fans after finishing Day 2 at 'General Santos City, South Cotabato' with retired boxing and Philippine congressional senate 'Mr. Manny Dapidran "Pacman" Pacquiao'. The Ohio-based content creator, on his white shirt emblazoned with "Philippine TODA", in promoting for the traditional pedicab ride, was mobbed by enthusiastic Filipino fans immediately upon arrival.
In a historic on-the-spot collaboration… 'IShowSpeed', was joined by Parañaque-based streamer, pinoy vlogger and 'Team Payaman' founder named 'Mr. Lincoln Cortez Velasquez' (known as 'CongTV'). The meetup between the duo at 'City de Mare' in 'South Coastal Highway' marked their first in-person interaction, much to the delight of the gathered crowd and online netizens worldwide.
Between the adventures of these two (2) male YouTubers in Cebu City, nothing was more eventful than it actually was. From braving no air-conditioned jeepney ride to commute locally, he is being able to taste some island street food menu like 'Lansiao' and 'Tuslob Buwa' at the BIGBRAIN in IL Corso Filinvest Malls; 'IShowSpeed' totally dived into the Cebuano experience.
However, the tour was not without its roadblocks as the American variety and veteran content creator vocally criticizes the region's internet providers such as Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), Globe Telecom, DITO Telecommunity, SkyFiber (under Sky Corporation) and Converge ICT Solutions Inc. affecting in some areas like Balamban and Mandaue.
'IShowSpeed' took to the skies via helicopter, landing on foot and going upstairs inside the radio booth at DYUR-FM 105.1mhz's Tops Media Center (TMC) in Busay around 5:45pm. Making his short foreign radio debut, he joined for an impromptu guest appearance, engaging with local listeners and getting a behind-the-scenes look at the radio studio operations featured on his YouTube live video (owned by Google's Alphabet). He played personally for one night only on his song request by 'IShowSpeed' to end their radio programme before the 6pm hour.
The evening session went on downstairs with a series of entertaining activities at Tops Cebu, including catching pigs, climbing a bamboo tree as attempted to get the Philippine flag, and a fireworks display -- all following the cue by ringing the bell. As the night went by, the 'IShowSpeed' has to 'IShowSugbo' himself with an overwhelming crowd.
Even though, the South East Asia tour went amazingly well with the turnout, it also presented a few problems in terms of crowd mismanagement. The authorities from Cebu City were vigilant and very considerate to both YouTuber and his fans as a whole, culminating in working with such dedication and efforts of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
IShowSpeed' ended his South East Asia tour tonight and presented a heartfelt expression of gratitude to his online and in-person supporters in the region. He spared no goodwill gesture as he expressed appreciation to his supporters from the very major cities across South East Asia, including Central Visayas and Southern Mindanao like Dumaguete, Bacolod and even Davao City, before he left their shores.
The American variety and veteran content creator is going to be returning to Ohio state in America by early (possibly) this weekend, taking with him unforgettable memories of his time spent in South East Asia. The tour has not only shown that 'IShowSpeed' indeed has global appeal, but also highlighted the passion that he has built up in this region with his fans.
Looking out its past in overcrowding issues, more likely having a continental-wide zombie apocalypse that will serve as a lesson -- in planning for future events and scenery, it is clear that the 'IShowSpeed' tour has stamped itself into the fabric of Cebu and the wider South East Asia communities. The overwhelming support and enthusiasm of fans also speaks to the continued growing clout of international creators in the region. Citing his Instagram post (part of Meta Platforms Inc. [MPi]), the whole tour of South East Asia has now been concluded.
A big special thanks to Tops Media Center for taking IShowSpeed in the studio booth and the local City Government of Cebu for taking its opportunity to visit the Queen City of South. Yan ang tatak IShowSugbo!!! Daghang salamat sa pagbisita, mga ka-Serbisyo!

Bring Philippine Killer Hero to Court
By Cursin Måjellån
(Second of series)
YOU could be a thousand times less alert on the devil dancing mischievously in a blazing fire than over a neighbour who can`t keep his eyes off your pretty young wife.
She`s everything to lose, worse comes to worst, isn`t she?
Likely, this was how the thriving island tribe and their chief datu, Lapulapu, struggled to lead their lives, day in and day out, since their island-domain had become the apple of Rajah Humabon`s eye. The latter badly wanted it to himself for a long time after occupying Sibu (today`s Cebu).
In context, we are actually looking for the missing chief datu who was unheard of after killing the Chileans' celebrity, Fernào de Magalhães (a.k.a. Ferdinand Magellan), a Spain backed Portuguese conquestador.
Unfortunately, it`s just outrageous that people these days only thought of Lapulapu to make fun of when he`s going crisp on the frying pan.
Naming the fish after him, being the -- first and probably the last -- man who tried to stop foreign invasion is even more egregious and unpatriotic, as such made Filipinos unworthy of freedom.
Either out of sheer ignorance or stupidity swallowing a malicious misnomer intended to kill a persistent aspiration, it means one thing, and one thing only: The suppression of the will to self determination succeeded!
Reduction of historical account into fairy tale, folk lore or sheer legend making the same less credible is -- no different from burning of books and libraries -- a primordial modus operandi of oppressors and colonizers.
What leads us to the missing chief datu is its antidote.
Hence, we feel it`s kind of positive social obligation to dive deep into the ocean of motives (that still find comfort among Filipino traits today) and its subsequent events then and now (as they persist on) that may point a trail back into time.
Anyhow, no way can we feel the terror and fierce emotion the island natives had at every attack against their well being as people -- who knew no other piece of earth their ancestors buried, provided them their human forms and home for their children -- unless we have similar fight on our plates.
In a hop off interlude from the multinational research team touring the Asian region early this year, I managed to pay a window visit to Cagayan de Oro City Hall in the Philippines.
The sight of crowding no-can-do receptionists and civil guards in the mayors office never surprised me (you see all when you see one), but the secretary with more questions than my questionaire`s did!
They can -- in their aggregate behaviours -- make your day nearly akin to that of LAX immigration bureau on your way to the US via Los Angeles, CA.
I could be wrong thó... I must have simply misinterpreted people's actuation. Thus you may as well dismiss the circumstances pissing me off, after all they may be kind people in many ways.
But caveat -- in case I was correct -- an offensive-defense is often self-compromising, politically.
Besides, had there been perhaps another `Mactan battle` imminent thereat, such would have given justice to the taxpayers` money feeding a bystanding army like that.
Dwelling in as such, I was nearly inclined to be more contemptuous than compassionate.
Sad! The same people who are dying for a rewritten history these days are the ones dead to their rotting lives and deeds.
What else is there to be written again other than their own same stinking decay?
Aren`t we repeating the same history, time and again... and again? What!
On the other hand, the taxi's tuned in local radio station -- assailing the planned come back as consultant of the former city mayor while whining over his laid off personnel -- explained nonetheless.
I am afraid, he must have kissed an Indian`s toe back then in the city hall that conferred him an indelible longing to return, or somebody in there, for same reason, may have kept rubbing her heel against her hero`s memento.
Please erase my annexes, I have high respect to the man. I would have omitted them myself hadn't I owed you a line or two along this context, I promised somewhere in the preceding series, as to how Chileans place their hero in high regard, even more personally.
Chilean legends hold that a kiss on the toe of the native (turned glass smooth today and shiny as gold), positioned likely as San Roque`s abscess licking dog at Magellan's foot, can give you an assurance of your return to Punta Arenas; meanwhile, when you rub your heel against the foot of the hero's monument shall bring him back instead.
The parallelism amused me, regardless. I could have thanked the taxi driver more cordially when I dropped off, had I thought about this earlier vis-a-vis the nagging radio commentary lambasting the past leader who rocked the boat.
Politicians, believe me, are far worse jealous than God, while the people whose dependence on them their only fortune are worst.
At any rate, the scenario, pathetic may it seem, shares the humanity of Lapulapu's people whose lives then depended on him and were ready to lay them down for their leader's life and territory.
Take into account the turf wars prevailing in those ages. You can imagine how alert the tribe's bagani (warriors' sector) had been, 24/7 for that matter.
Doubtless, not only twice were invaders pushed back and chased up to their last breaths by these defending island natives, but gazillion times that they earned their notoriety almost everywhere.
This anyhow collected more enemies who gave them, no less, their appropriate moniker, "Mangatang" (meaning to watch on or to barricade) which Spaniards corrupted into ``Mactan.``
In much later perversions by neighbors, however, motivated by same greed and power to subjugate, such defense was turned self compromising as people.
Foes demonized the entire Kendatuan Ho Mangatang as tribe of ``pirates perpetrating ambushes`` in the islet`s surrounding waters.
This was how Humabon sold his cause to the Spaniards. More of his spins and tricks twisting Spaniards' noses to kiss his arsss are on the next series. (36)
