He’s not happy about her coming, so he recognizes the danger, which makes me think he’s planning on relying on Thor. Also, we get the exposition that the Executioner wants the peasants to stay ill so they can’t oppose him. Very over the top goofy style evil in some of these comics.

A lot of it had to do with the Comics Code Authority.

Back in the 50's, a prominent psychologist named Dr Frederick Wetham accused comics of being the cause of juvenile delinquency and spreading homosexuality. He pointed specifically to panels between Batman and Robin and Wonder Woman being a lesbian fantasy because she was the product of women with no men.

Although his research was flawed, this lead to a public backlash against comics with comics being burned and even Congress taking notice.

So the Comics Code Authority was created to help regulate the content of comics. No ghosts, no vampires, nothing remotely homosexual etc. And of course no killing for the heroes.

Characters like Kathy Kane, Aunt Harriet and Bette Kane were added to comics to assure audiences that Batman and Robin aren't gay. As traditional norms asserted itself in the 50's Wonder Woman comics turned into stories of her pining for Steve and undermining her feminist themes. Lois Lane went from a fierce journalist to...well....Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane with her and Lana's purpose being to chase after Superman's affection.

The CCA was so strict that if killed off Westerns, horror and many other genres. One could make a case that if the CCA hadn't come to be the US comics industry would be more akin to the manga industry with no big two.

In the early 50's, the popularity of superheroes were waning, only Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman were continually published. Everyone else including Flash, Green Lantern, Captain America (after a brief attempt to revive him as a commie smasher) were cancelled.

However, the strict enforcement of the CCA meant only superheroes could thrive. Flash was reinvented as Barry Allen, Green Lantern as Hal Jordan, the Hawks were now a pair of alien space cops. Then of course a rival competitor emerged in the form of Marvel: the Fantastic Four, Spider-man, the Avengers, X-Men, they perfected the idea of a shared universe.

Of course no creator nor fan was ever fully content with it, hence why writers over the years tried to be subversive. So you got panels like Batman locking up KGBeast in a sewer during Knightfall, Superman killing pocket universe Zod or Cap shooting terrorists in a hostage situation during Gruenwalds run. Then of course, Punisher, Vigilante and the whole glut of 80's action heroes who killed with impunity heralding the slow death of the CCA.

What is ironic is that Wonder Woman had a no kill rule during the original run by her own creator (Marston with Joy Hummel). In Wonder Woman #28 Wonder Woman saves one of her enemies telling us that "Aphrodites law commands us to save lives always -- enemies or not". It was Superman and Batman who had no problem killing. But now the roles have been switched with Wonder Woman being percieved as the one most willing to kill while Superman and Batman are pacifists.

This wooden deck we built in Waterfall, Durban was part of a new build at Focus on Ithemba along Blessing Ninela Road, Waterfall. They were building a new boardroom and office complex and part of the design was a wooden exterior deck.

The job was referred to us by Mass Landscapes, Miles Steenhuysen, who was contracted to do the landscaping. His details can be found here.

In consultation with Miles and the project manager we designed the deck so as to flow around this office complex comfortably and aesthetically and within budget.

The structure of the deck was the standard H3 and H4 CCA treated pine. H3 and H4 CCA treated pine is suitable for outdoors decks. H3 has a life span of a minimum of 50 years and correctly treated H4 pine can live in the ground in constant contact with wet soil for a minimum of 20 years. We used 19 x 68mm yellow balau deck boards as the surface. There is a difference between red and yellow balau. The red balau, which is a bit cheaper in South Africa, is a lot more porous and less dense than the yellow balau and as a result will absorb and retain water more easily than yellow balau and will therefore probably rot more quickly. We use only yellow balau which is the most cost-effective hardwood for decking in South Africa. It is not correct to assume that treated pine is cheaper than balau deck boards. The building we were attaching this deck to was not completely square with itself as it was an old building that had been extended. As such one needs to be very careful when building wooden decks against walls that aren’t square or straight. At some point there will need to be a correction to eliminate the problem and it needs to occur where it is less visible. Either the deck can be built square to itself but it will highlight the errors on the building or the deck needs to be built off square to take up any difference between the building and the deck in a place where it is less visible and can be concealed.

Screw holes we filled with epoxy and sanded flat. The epoxy used was a clear epoxy which was mixed with saw dust to match the colour. The epoxy in the screw holes prevents water sitting in the counter sunk screw hole and being absorbed up the end grain which would cause rot to set in more quickly. The deck can be oiled after sanding or left to grey naturally.

Hagging Out!

My biggest project this month was making several batches of Kyphi-type incense. One was a traditional recipe based on historical sources for my sister (not a part of this post), one to sell and another one to preserve the contents of my herbal cabinet by processing them and not letting them sit around loosing potency.

Generally, to define a Kyphi-type incense, we can say that this type of incense features a wet part consisting of wine, raisins, dates/figs, honey and a dry part, which are mixed and dried to form pellets. 

In general, to form the wet part of the incense dough, you need cca 4 raisins per tablespoon of dry material and one cup of dried dates/figs per 50 raisins, a tablespoon of honey and enough wine to cover it all and have left over to add, after the raisins and dates soak it up. Optionally, you can add some essential oils to the mix as well. 

You chop the raisins and dates finely, or if you are lazy like me, put both in the final jar, add wine and chop it using a hand blender. 

Leave the wet mixture (raisins, dates/figs, honey, wine and essential oil) to sit for 1-2 weeks, stir daily and add any blessings and incantations you may like.

Use these two weeks to finely grind your chosen dry ingredients. This incense type works best with a lot of resins and woods.

You can decide the final number of dry ingredients based on the intended purpose of the incense (planetary numbers etc.), or by what you have available in the necessary amounts. 

My dry materials consisted of among others:

When your wet materials have steeped enough, it is time to boil them down. 

Over a low heat, just enough to warm the mixture without boiling it, simmer it while stirring often for a couple of hours, until it forms a gooey batter. Ventilate you kitchen well!

Place your dry materials into a large bowl and once a little cooled, add the wet portion in slowly, while working it in. Don’t add everything at once, you are aiming to knead a firm dough that no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl and you may have more wet ingredients than needed. 

When you are done, break the dough into small pellets and place in on a drying rack. If you are fortunate like me to have an electric herb dryer, the process of drying the incense at 35°C takes about a week. If you are drying it in room temperature, it may take up to 3-4 weeks. Either way, the place where the drying will happen will smell absolutely lovely. 

The goal is to dry the pellets so they are firm to the touch. 

Afterwards, after removing the dried incense from the dryer, I like to coat it with ground Benzoin resin to work as a preservative, since the incense still contains organic materials and may also contain water. I also added Dragon’s blood to the coating for an added kick of scent and color.  

Store in an airtight jar and voilá, your own Kyphi-type incense:

I am sitting in my chair at my parent's house. It's nice to be here. I am tired but not horribly. Today was ba nice day even if I was sad to leave the beach.

I again had trouble sleeping. I woke up before Jess. After staying up way to late, so that was frustrating. But I felt okay. I got dressed. And she got up not long after that and we headed to breakfast.

Had breakfast issues. They were out of a bunch of stuff. But we got bagels and it was nice out. We went to thr boardwalk to get ice tea. There were issues there too!! But we got our drinks and headed back to the condo.

We had to pack Jess's stuff up and we only had like 20 minute til check out. Which stressed me out but Jess was real quick and we headed out.

We drove over to the bay to take pictures. But sadly none of them came out. It was just to bright for the instax, and we didnt take phone pics. A little sad but its okay.

We had a long drive back to bucks county. When we were going through the pine barrens where we started seeing smoke. As we got closer we saw fire. A car was burning on the side of the road. It was very scary. But no ambulances so I'm hoping no one was hurt.

We rolled up to my parents around 130. It was really nice to see my mom snd the dogs. I gave Jess a hug and she left.

Today was mostly talking. Catching up. Mom and me went to get wawa and the bread has improved so much! Excellent. And then dad came home and we all hung out until mom went to lay down. Then my brother was here. And we talked about CCA where i went to school and cult behavior and how I've been feeling lately. It was good to talk to them. And be validated by brother's experiences too.

Steve left. And I went to unpack my bag and find some better ways to move things back to Baltimore. Ill do more of that tomorrow. I watches videos and chilled for a while. Played with the dogs.

I tried to take a bath and i discovered there had been a leak and the tub lining had filled with water. Scary and gross. Hopefully it doesnt cost my parents to much to fix.

Im jsut chilling in my room now. Watching videos. But mostly I am excited to sleep.

Tomorrow im hoping for a chill day. Might have brunch with my dad. I hopw to go lay on the hammock and read my book. Just rest. Cause my feet hurt still.

Benjamin Saurer is a Berlin-based trained organist and visual artist. He practiced church music from 1997 to 2003 and received his MFA from Städelschule, Academy of Fine Arts Frankfurt am Main in 2008. In parallel to his painting practice, he writes music to accompany exhibitions of artist colleagues and regularly performs as an organist in similar frameworks. Most recently Saurer has composed and performed at Stadtgalerie Bern, Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt, Kunsthalle Wien, Kunsthalle Basel, Portikus, and Kunstverein Oldenburg. At the Twelve Apostles Church, Saurer will play an excerpt of Die Fregatte/The frigate, a work by Thys/de Gruyter, 2008; The Elect, an ambient soundtrack for Yannic Joray’s exhibition of the same name at Stadtgalerie Bern, 2021; and Ich bin eine rufende Stimme [I am a Calling Voice], 2022, composition for organ.

Frankie is the solo music project of Franziska Aigner, consisting of a solo cello and vocal set combined with a hyper-emotional lyricism. Mostly working in choreography and performance, the past few years have continuously brought more and more music to her life. Aigner performed in and co-wrote the music to FAUST by Anne Imhof for the 2017 Venice Biennale, and joined the Holly Herndon vocal ensemble in 2019. She continues to work and perform with artists such as Anne Imhof, William Forsythe, and Austin Jack Lynch, and recently completed her PhD in philosophy. Frankie will perform songs from her newly-released EP, Styx, which can be purchased here.

Kelman Duran is a musician and artist born in La Ermita, in the countryside of the Dominican Republic, and raised in New York City. Prior to making music, he produced videos at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Through his music, Duran explores the legacy of the black rebellion during Haitian Revolution and today’s unbalanced racial climate, reinterpreting and propelling the parameters of Afro- rhythms like reggaeton and dancehall. His latest LP, Night In Tijuana, was released in 2021 on the label Scorpio Red, which he co-founded with artist Annie Mackinnon. Duran will close the evening with an ambient mix conceived for the occasion.
