Song: Yankee Doodle Polka / Rhythm for You
Composer: Cath. McCarthy & Charles Pierre
Director: David Johnson (Dolf van der Linden) conducting Charles Brull’s Dance Orchestra
Record Label: Charles Brull - A Harmonic Private Recording CBL 40
Released: ca. 1952
This song is a bit of an anomaly, also for an anomalous day. It does appear to be a polka in 2/4 time though there’s a stunning lack of accordion. The motif of the Popeye the Sailor Man theme is probably the most American part of it. There are a number of songs called “Yankee Doodle Polka”, but this composition stands unique.
Galaxy News Radio uses three of the last four tracks of Roads to War (1933-1945) Part 1, all of which are two halves of the same record, yet somehow omitting this one. Perhaps there was some confusion with “Yankee Doodle” over on Enclave Radio.
About the composers and conductor
This is the tricky part as aliases seem to go a long way in the library music world.
As explained on the flip side, “David Johnson” is likely a pseudonym for Dutch conductor Dolf van der Linden.
Cath. McCarthy appears to be short for Catherine McCarthy which may be a pseudonym for composer Tommie Connor who wrote among others, “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”. Catherine McCarthy is his wife’s maiden name.
There’s little information on Charles Pierre which may be another pseudonym. There is published sheet music by Charles Pierre and Richard Thorpe for “Too Late for Tears”, which incidentally was manufactured by Charles Brull.
This is the only apparent composition by “Cath. McCarthy” though “Charles Pierre” is credited on conducting CBL 45 to 47 and composing on CLB 312 to 313. I’m afraid that is all I can unearth for now. About the recording
As I stated on the flip side, it appears to be first reissued in 1999 as a CD, KPM 0398 Roads to War (1933-1945) Part 1. Here, the song picked up a description as Track No. 48:
“Swinging mood music performed by a dance band” Charles Brull seems to have also provided discs for broadcast on the BBC as test pattern or test card music. There’s three very recognizable tracks appearing under 1954 with this one making the last pair.
To narrow down this date, we once again turn to the Danish Cultural Archive or the Dansk Kulturarv which has digitized the radio set-lists of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR). Unlike the reverse side of CBL 40 “Rhythm for You”, “Yankee Doodle Polka” (the McCarthy-Pierre composition, not the Duke-Latouche version) is shown as being played 5 times from 1958 to 1960, and the flip none at all.
Meanwhile, the Swedish Film Database records that the “Yankee Doodle Polka” was used in 3 films in the 1950s, the earliest being Flottare med färg in 1952. Since they are two halves of the same record and there is no earlier date, it pushes “Rhythm for You” to 1952 as well. Listen to the flip side “Rhythm for You” here.

Novel Prep
Thanks to @dimawriting and @maple-writes for tagging me!!
WIP: The Inbetween
Tagging: @drist-n-dither @theforgottencoolkid @minny-santa and uhh anyone else who sees this!
This gets pretty long so I’ll put it under a read more.
First Look
1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch)
The crew members abroad the Perseus Space Station were tasked with investigating the first signs of early human-like civilization on an exoplanet. The truth behind the ruins scattered across the dying planet, however, is stranger, darker, older than anything they ever expected.
2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Is it a novella, single book, book series, etc.)
As of right now, The Inbetween is a single book divided into 5ish parts. The POV will be third person. Still not sure if I want to switch between characters for each chapter or if I want each of the 5 parts told through the perspective of one of the main characters. I am playing with the idea of a sequel. I also want to write about the before and after the events of The Inbetween. There are also at least two AUs running around my mind so I might explore those too.
3. What is your novel’s aesthetic?
Dark skies full of stars, floating weightlessly, lonely planets, geometry, singularity, the smallness of existence, amorphous shadows on the wall, empty corridors, static, flickering lights, hearts racing from adrenaline, the taste of blood in your mouth as you run for your life
4. What other stories inspire your novel?
The Inbetween originated from me wanting to take some of my unused characters beyond them just being characters. The earliest drafts of The Inbetween were short stories inspired by Wolfgun’s music. The story eventually grew into what it is now thanks to a few episodes of Star Trek and Welcome to Nightvale. Lots of the scenes I currently have written were born from daydreaming to Carbon Based Lifeforms’s music. I would say CBL has had the biggest influence on the story.
5. Share 3+ images that give a feel for your novel
This one is for the last part of the book.
Main Character
6. Who is your protagonist?
There are five protagonists:
Emmett Reyes: Mexican-American, 19 (at the beginning of the story), aro/ace, trans, biologist
Johann Herschel: British-German, 20 (at the beginning of the story), bi, nonbinary, pilot and navigator
Neveen Jalal: Egyptian-American, 19 (at the beginning of the story), lesbian, chemist, starship medic, lowkey inspired by my high school chem teacher
Oliver West: Korean-Canadian, 20 (at the beginning of the story), gay, mechanic
Alternis: A.I., years active unknown, primarily used for security and scouting
7. Who is their closest ally?
Their closest allies would be each other. Here’s some specific friendships:
Overall: they grow as close as family. Nothing like a near death experience out in the middle of the cold, indifferent void to make five kids bond for life.
Neveen + Emmett: Nerd friends! With him being a biologist and her becoming a medic, they share a love for the subject. They bond over their love for their cultures. They teach each other words in their native tongues.
Johann + Emmett + Oliver: Partners in crime!! These three are as ride or die as you can get with a group of friends. While Johann isn’t always keen on the chaos, he still goes along with it because “who’s going to serve as your guys’s impulse control???” Secretly, he loves it.
Oliver + Johann: Oliver becomes pretty supportive of all his friends and his relationship with Johann is no different. Oliver makes for a pretty good listener and he doesn’t mind hearing about his friend’s worries. He’ll offer some pretty good advice as well.
Neveen + Oliver: Oliver is, without a doubt, the most social of all the crew members. Unlike him, however, Neveen is the exact opposite. He will respect her space if she needs it, but he is also there to make sure she doesn’t lose herself in it. In a lot of ways, he reminds Neveen of her own sister.
Emmett + Alternis: These two form a pretty close bond. Both share feelings of becoming static in life. Both struggle with insecurity and general feelings of anxiety that they are not good enough. However, they both also share a deep curiosity for the world around them. She likes to ask him questions knowing he won’t brush them off and he feels comfortable enough to ramble on about whatever subject is most interesting to him knowing that she is willing to listen with interest herself.
Bonus:
Commander Mitch Connor + his crew: At first, Mitch was pretty hesitant to be this mission’s commander. They’re all kids, two of them fresh out of high school almost. However, he quickly learns that this crew is more than capable. They’re adaptable and fiercely resilient. They know how to use their strengths to their advantage and do so creatively. Most importantly, though, they genuinely care about each other.
8. Who is their enemy?
The story’s main antagonist is a weird hivemind entity that is partially made from various alien life forms and part alien tech. It’s main purpose is to find creatures its programming deems perfect specimens and then merge with (eat???) them to take on their abilities. The creature was once a technologically advanced alien race from a different dimension who sought to create the “perfect being”. No one’s really sure what “perfect being” meant for them, but eventually they, and most of their old universe, were all consumed by their creation. The entity then traveled across many other dimensions still seeking specimens to consume. While it has no definite shape or can even be considered a single animal, it’s still very much sapient. It’s hard to tell the age or if it was supposed to be machine or animal or even what species it originally was. However, the minds and voices of its creators live on with it.
If you want an idea as to how it sounds, it’s a little like the Warpers from Subnautica but with multiple voices. Here’s a clip.
9. What do they want more than anything?
They all have different dreams that they are pursuing, but they basically all want a life where they can be happy and have closure.
Emmett wants to be at peace with himself.
Johann wants to find a place that he can call home.
Oliver wants to protect the little he already has.
Neveen wants to achieve her dreams.
Alternis wants to belong.
10. Why can’t they have it?
Emmett is, first of all, much too doubting in himself. He worries so much that he can’t appreciate the things he has done right or the things he can do. He isn’t very kind to himself.
Johann misses the life he had on Earth. He and his family moved to a new planet because they don’t really like Earth and want to experience something new. But Johann never feels the same sense of “home” as he did on Earth.
Oliver’s job is helping out his mother with their repair shop. So, when the shop is threatened with closure, he is desperate to find another job, but since he dropped out and never finished school, he’s having a really hard time coming up with something that will provide enough. This is why he ends up joining the space program.
Neveen is in a somewhat similar boat. She has dreams of working as a doctor and all of her time and effort goes into studying for that. She, however, ends up getting rejected from three different schools in her area. She starts to feel like time is somehow running out for her.
Alternis has had a hard time. When she didn’t fit the expectations her creators set, she quickly discovered that her differences were seen as something flawed. She spent a lot of her early days either alone and she grew to be resentful towards people. But she wants to be accepted, so when they told her she was to be assigned to the Perseus Station, she had a lot of mixed feelings about the situation.
11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?
Emmett: not smart/good enough, not allowed to make mistakes
Neveen: her success determines her worth, has to do things just right or Else
Oliver: dumb for dropping out of college, is not much other than the comic relief in his friend group
Johann: thinks he can run from facing what’s really bothering him
Alternis: needs to have a purpose to be worth something to others, needs to change to be accepted
12. Draw your protagonist! (Or share a description)
Emmett: 5′2, curly brown hair, brown eyes, tan skin, a scar running from jaw to cheek, there’s a picture @auroradrawing made here!
Neveen: 5′5, long black hair, brown eyes, dark skin, red hijab
Johann: 6′2. dark blond hair, blue eyes, pale skin
Oliver West: 5′10, black hair, brown eyes, pale skin
Alternis: i made a post on her appearance here
Plot Points
13. What is the internal conflict?
I would say that the overall internal conflict for all the characters is them struggling to understand that they are human which means that they are allowed to be wrong, make bad decisions, have emotions, and fail and none of this undermines their value in any way.
14. What is the external conflict?
The main external conflict is survival. They come into contact with a powerful interdimensional creature who is possibly hundred of thousands of years old or more and they have no idea how to stop it. After their station and only way home gets destroyed and they find themselves stranded with no way to let anyone know what’s happening, they realize that they have to find a way to at least repel the creature as it’s not just their survival at stake, but also that of their friends and family back on Earth.
15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?
Death, probably. There’s a lot of things that would be left undone and unsaid and also literally no one else knows what is going on, so it could be a while before anyone back home realizes they’re never coming back. And that thought is one of the scariest things they can imagine.
16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?
Basically the purpose of the entity and them figuring out what it is and what it wants changes everything they were led to believe at first about the planet and the origin of the ruins.
17. Do you know how it ends?
Yes. They all get a happy ending because I’m done with the sad shit. Also happy endings are good?? Like give me more happy endings dammit! They go through so much shit and get tested so much, like, they deserve their happy ending.
Bits and Bobs
18. What is the theme?
You are stronger than you think. Let yourself be flawed. Things might not be okay, but they will work out. You have a place in the universe, no matter how small. Tomorrow is a new day.
19. What is a reoccurring symbol?
Darkness, geometry/symmetry, fire (?),static, lots of the names of things have meaning behind them
20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!)
There are two made up planets on which this story takes place. The first planet is Thesan-4. This planet is a desert-like planet. It’s in the Milky Way for sure, but I haven’t exactly figured out where yet. This planet is primarily used for military/astronaut training. At least 40% of the story will take place here. The other planet is an icy, Earth-like planet. I call this planet the Mirror World in my head but the actual name is pending. Here is where the remains of early civilization are found and this is where the Perseus crew is assign for their mission. At least 60% of the story will take place here.
21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?
Hell yeah! Scenes and a general outline are all I have right now. A lot of the little details are still pretty vague though.
22. What excited you about this story?
Oh man, is “everything” an answer? I always wanted to write a story set in space, but my biggest issue was finding a good plot. Like, I had the characters and I had some vague idea of a setting, but no actual plot or conflict. This story spent a lot of time on the back burner and I honestly thought about abandoning it a few times. However, it has come to grow so much and I’m really happy I didn’t abandon it. I love the lore behind the antagonist and the character interactions and uhhh well damn. Everything!
23. Tell us about your usual writing method!
I think the very first thing I come up with is either the setting or the characters. Then, I make the characters that I feel would go best with the setting or vice versa. Other details like names and stuff come way later. 99% of my writing process is music. If I need a certain mood for a scene, I’ll put on some music that fits and I’ll listen to it a few times before actually writing. I find that this helps me come up with scenes so I don’t really struggle at that. Putting them down on paper is harder lol, especially when I can see at least three different ways to write the opening. But once I start writing, everything flows much easier.

Santa Catalina Island is a rocky island situated at about 47 km southwest of Long Beach, California.
The island has got some huge stories told about its history, along with one I would say. For over 7,000 years, the island has had inhabitants dwelling in it. However, as part of the story, there is a blend of territorial claims of the island among some nationalities.
Some set of Europeans from the Spanish empire were the first to step foot there and claimed it, before it was transferred to the Mexicans and then the United States.
The island has served as a stop for smugglers, gold diggers, pirates, hunters, the Union army, and missionaries. Catalina’s history as a resort destination began about 125 years ago.
The island being a host to a Mediterranean climate encourages visitation all year round. Though the summer (which overall is the warmest time of year on Catalina) attracts more people. The weather to say the least does not affect business places, they are always open, and so you can visit the island any time of the year.
Getting around is never an issue as most visitors and locals make use of their feet, a bike, or golf cart.
9. Raging Waters

Most of these are water slides.
So the variety of creative water slides (both classic and tubes) and of course the water pools makes it everyone wishes especially on a hot summer day.

Coming to a mall near you in 2018: Craft brewers, children's theaters and gyms

Coming to a mall near you in 2018: Craft brewers, children's theaters and gyms
Malls are getting makeovers — so much so they might not be called malls anymore, or you might do a double take next time you stroll through one.
U.S. retail landlords including Simon Property Group, General Growth Properties, Macerich and Taubman, which own some of the most profitable malls in America, are focused on redeveloping their properties and ditching antiquated occupants in the coming months.
To be sure, many of these property owners don’t exactly have a choice. As department stores including Sears, Macy’s and J.C. Penney fire off store closure announcements and as countless specialty apparel retailers file for bankruptcy with plans to shrink their physical footprints, real estate investment trusts have to find replacements elsewhere, and quick.
“We’ve weathered lots of storms one way or another,” Simon CEO David Simon said on a recent conference call with analysts and investors, discussing retail’s rough ride in 2017.
“We’d certainly love a better natural retail environment,” Simon added. But in the meantime, the company is working on “diversifying away from the have-nots to the haves.”
Take a look at Simon’s King of Prussia mall outside Philadelphia, which the company likes to call its “Hudson Yards” (a major development being done in New York) for suburban America. This is also notably one of the top-performing malls in the country, according to Green Street Advisors.
There, the REIT is planning to fill a vacated Penney store with mixed uses such as hotels, apartments and office spaces, which could ultimately hike the asset’s value by more than $1 billion, according to Simon. The specific incoming occupants have yet to be formally announced.
Nowadays, Simon said, it spends about $1 billion annually to renovate its malls. In signing new leases, the REIT has reduced its exposure to apparel tenants — the biggest headache on many company’s directories — by about 20 percent and has added 20 percent more food and entertainment businesses.
“I think, as things have changed, we now consider ourselves as a — we’re going to have more mixed use opportunities,” Simon told investors. “But we’re not running away from the mall business.”
Since 2014, 90 regional malls have spent more than $8 billion on property renovations, according to investment management company Jones Lang LaSalle. Meantime, 16 percent of mall landlords have admitted to spending money on “de-malling,” JLL found, opting to call their refreshed assets “shoppes,” “villages” and “towne centers.”
In 2018, that spending and those modifications are only expected to climb.
Starwood Retail Partners, a Chicago-based, privately held landlord with 30 properties, is in the midst of a $125 million renovation project in Plano, Texas, which will open in phases next year. Once completed, The Shops at Willow Bend will include a children’s theater, an Equinox gym and one of only four Crayola Experience locations in the country.
Starwood is also bringing in more local and celebrity chefs, which CEO Michael Glimcher told CNBC is what more and more consumers want — something more exclusive than a traditional Cheesecake Factory or Shake Shack.
In Salinas, California, Starwood is also making changes to Northridge Mall in the space of a former Penney store, which was relocated to another part of the property. The new complex will include a bowling alley, karaoke booths, arcade games and billiards, and will offer alcoholic beverages. It’s something kids and adults can get excited about.
“Next year, everyone will be looking for newness,” Dana Telsey, Telsey Advisory Group CEO, told CNBC. “Online retailers are testing physical in small ways, … [and] I think you’re going to see more services coming to shopping centers, and we’ll see how that progresses.”
Recent replacements she’s noticed include a massive Wegmans grocery store taking over a vacated mall spot in Boston, ride-hailing service Uber opening waiting lounges at Westfield’s Century City shopping center near Los Angeles’ Santa Monica Boulevard, and walk-in medical clinics (even doctor’s offices) taking over empty mall space.
“The immediacy of how [mall landlords] do this is key,” Telsey added.
In a push to lure more shoppers indoor, retail REIT Washington Prime Group just last month opened its first craft brew pub, Redemption Alewerks, at Munice Mall in Indiana, and expects to open more such locations next year.
“A little common sense and regression analysis will tell you we need more home, food and beverage, and entertainment options,” WPG CEO Lou Conforti told CNBC in a recent interview.
WPG also recently launched at some of its malls a rotating pop-up hub for online retailers, known as Tangible, its own candy store (Shelby’s Sugar Shop) to replace lackluster vendors, and music listening lounges in a partnership with Interscope Records. Like some of the other major retail REITs, WPG has growing partnerships with the likes of Amazon and Tesla to open lockers and supercharging stations at its malls.
“We have to do a reality check on what we want,” Conforti said. “It’s incumbent that we just do this stuff … to redefine physical retailing.”
Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (or PREIT), a smaller landlord than the likes of GGP and even CBL Properties, is making changes that include swapping Sears for Burlington, HomeGoods and Five Below stores at Magnolia Mall in Florence, South Carolina. A Whole Foods will replace a shuttered Kmart at Exton Square near Philadelphia. And a Tilt Studio (an arcade attraction for kids), along with a gym, will soon replace Macy’s at Valley Mall in Hagerstown, Maryland.
“We talk about diversifying our tenant base. … We’re referring to reducing our reliance on traditional mall retailers, including department stores, apparel and accessories,” PREIT CEO Joe Coradino told analysts and investors last month.
“Malls in particular are undergoing the renaissance” in a “new age of retail,” he added.
According to commercial real estate tracker CoStar, the share of space occupied by nonretail tenants at regional shopping malls climbed to about 13 percent in 2016, up from 10.5 percent in 2012. With more projects like Simon’s King of Prussia redevelopment underway, that percentage should continue to climb.
Meantime, mall owners can only hope their stocks might climb in tandem after being beaten down for most of the year.
A recent (but not complete) bid for GGP by Brookfield Property Partners, a takeover of Australian-based Westfield and increased activist activity in Taubman and Macerich have boosted the industry’s shares slightly on all the chatter, but there are still ample losses to be regained.

Desperate Malls Turn to Concerts and Food Trucks
Malls are fighting for shoppers with one thing their web competitives can’t offer: parking lots.
With customer traffic sagging, U.S. retail landowners are applying their sprawling concrete heaps to host affairs such as celebrations, concerts and food-truck festivals. They’re is an attempt to enticement visitors with knows that can’t be replicated online — and then get them inside the belongings to invest some money.
” Phenomena draw people to come to the shopping center ,” said Craig Herkimer, whose company, KevaWorks Inc ., is working with big landowners including GGP Inc . and Simon Property Group Inc . to cause outdoor happens.” They generate revenue for the owner and render a chance for cross-promotion, so they can try and drive more purchasers into the accumulations .”

Mall owneds across the country are grappling with chronicle supermarket closings and refusing rents. Retail property costs are down 3 percent in past six months, as all other types of commercial-grade real estate depicted gains, according to the Moody’s/ Real Capital Analytics indicators. A Bloomberg gauge of publicly traded mall proprietors has toppled 15 percentage in the past time through yesterday, the worst conduct among U.S. real estate investment trusts.
Amazon.com Inc . and other internet retailers continue to grow, while department stores including Sears Holding Corp . and Macy’s Inc . ought to have shutting hundreds of locations. Payless Inc ., the dismis shoe marketer, is among the latest to announce a massive shuttering — of 400 storages — as part of a bankruptcy plan.
” We expect to see current trends of more closings ,” pronounced Carol Kemple, an commentator at Hilliard Lyons.” Most retailers, if they’re still standing in September, is very likely to try to make it through the vacation season .”
Creating Experiences
Retail landlords have already made a push toward experience-driven provides by including restaurants, movie theater and pleasure centers for children. Numerous malls are also contributing rotating storages around for only a short period of time — known as pop-up stores — that are meant to attract young the consumer who discover store as an event.
Now, occurrences are reaching beyond the plazas themselves. Herkimer’s task is to producing army to parking lots with events that generate as much as $60,000 a week for plaza owners from the most significant outdoor events.

The idea is gaining traction. Next month, Simon Property is having the first celebration in its Round Rock Premium Outlets parking lots, about 20 miles( 32 kilometers) north of Austin, Texas. Similar happens are being held for the first time at locations such as Central Mall in Port Arthur, Texas, be administered by Jones Lang LaSalle Inc ., and a Cheyenne, Wyoming, plaza owned by CBL& Associates Belongings Inc . In July, Simon Property’s Orland Square Mall, southwest of Chicago, will be holding its first parking-lot food-truck celebration, with plans for live music achievements, Herkimer said.
Movie Nights
Lisa Harper, elderly director of specialty leasing for Chattanooga, Tennessee-based CBL, said the company has expanded its carnival business at many of its 87 dimensions over the last couple times. She and Herkimer have discussed the possibility of pumpkin patches in the autumn months and lending movie nights to some properties. CBL’s Triangle Town Center, in Raleigh, North Carolina, is about to start its second mini concert and food-truck line, announced Creekside Wind Down, Harper said.
Retailers leased the outdoor seat in a structure that resembles their indoor leases, Harper enunciated. While each spate differs, the agreements involve a base lease fee for the use of the room and a percentage payment after the affair reaches a certain threshold. Department accumulates, which sometimes own or control their parking lots, are examining more importance in hiring the space after many years of restricting their apply, she said.
” Contests fetches that additional traffic and likewise encourage people to stick around longer ,” Harper said.
There’s no guarantee, of course, that beings will go inside, suggested Tracey Hatley, administrator of specialty leasing for JLL Retail. But the events offer opportunities for cross-promotion. Purchasers receive leaflets advertising accumulates or eateries inside the plaza or coupon volumes to facilitate depict them in.
‘Driving Traffic’
That works well for dimensions like the Santa Rosa Mall in Mary Esther, Florida, Hatley said.
” They are a dimension that’s struggling with tenancy, struggling with driving traffic to the center, so they affection doing parking-lot events ,” she added.” You can see it from the road and it gets people on the property .”

The U.S. is currently dwelling to about 1,100 shopping center, according to Laurel Durkay, vice president and associate portfolio manager of real estate securities at Cohen& Steers Inc . Some retail REITs are lending role opening or accommodations to their portfolios to diversify.
Sandeep Mathrani, chief executive of GGP, articulated at a meeting this month that the perfect plaza now would include one department store, a supermarket, an Apple store, a Tesla store and industries that started out online, like Warby Parker, the purveyor of prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. Garment accumulations now represent about 50 percentage of the average shopping center, down from about 70 percentage, he said.
” Landlords are trying to give people reasonableness to come to the plaza, whether it’s a Tesla billing depot or get neighbourhood automobile guilds to host phenomena in their parking lots ,” pronounced Alexander Goldfarb, an commentator at Sandler O’Neill& Partners LP.” It’s not a fun time to be either a retailer or landlord, but it doesn’t mean every single plaza or shopping center is going to close. ‘Enormous Opportunity’
” This very painful process is certainly take more than five years old ,” Steven Roth, Vornado Realty Trust’s chief executive officer, said in a letter to stockholders this month.” It will likewise create immense opportunity for those with the capital city and handling stages to feed on the carnage .”
