-when one of them is having a bad day, the other one usually picks up on it super quick because they just know each other that well, and so she'll do a bunch of small things to make the day easier for her girl. like for ava, sara always make sure to do a little extra cleaning so that everything is nice and neat and tidy, and she'll also make sure the legends don't get into any over-the-top shenanigans because she knows how much it stresses ava out. for sara, ava does a bunch of little other mundane things for sara, like get her coffee for her or make sure she eats something and isn't being too hard on herself, and if anything comes up that might be potentially triggering for sara, ava handles it right off the bat so that sara won't have to. after either of them has had a bad day, at night once they're alone they like to be extra soft and gentle with each other, like extra hugs and cuddles and kisses, probably also giving each other little massages to help each other relax.

-a few times sara and ava have sparred with each other in the gym to let off some steam, and a lot of times it helps. sometimes though, sara in particular sometimes gets super restless and agitated, and ava always offers to go spar with her so she can let some of it out, but whenever sara is extra restless or agitated, she always declines ava's offers to spar because she's kinda scared if being too rough and accidentally hurting ava, so instead sara works out her energy and aggression on the punching bag, while ava watches her to make sure she doesn't over do it, and also to make sure she drinks enough water

-sometimes when sara has a really bad nightmare, particularly ones about ivo, she needs to run to the bathroom as soon as she wakes up so she can vomit. once she's done, if she's not quite ready to go back to bed yet, she turns the sink faucet on with shaking hands and splashes cold water on herself (which only mixes with the cold sweat that she woke up in) and leans on the sink and stares at herself in the mirror. she's always a little shaky, her skin paler than usual, dark circles under her eyes, hair damp, and sleep shirt sticking uncomfortable to her skin from the sweat. ava always joins her in the bathroom a few minutes later (she follows right after sara, but knows that sara usually prefers a few minutes to herself after nightmares like this before she's ready for ava to join her and offer comfort). she brushes sara's hair back behind her ear, presses a brief, gentle kiss to the side of her head, and offers up the clean sleep shirt that she always has the foresight to grab. when sara's finally ready, they go back to their room and lay back down, with sara on her side and ava holding her from behind, which is 100% only possible (especially after nightmares like these) because sara feels completely safe with ava and trusts her with everything

-sara has a shit ton of old injuries that like to flare up and give her grief from time to time, especially when it's cold, raining, or after a bunch of physical exertion, and whether it be scars or old broken bones. when that happens, if it's the scars on sara's body, then ava likes to put lotion or ointment on them to help ease the discomfort, and if it's something more like old injured/broken bones, like a knee or ankle or wrist or shoulder or smth, ava usually tries to get sara to take it easy, and she massages whatever it is that hurts before rubbing like,, cbd pain cream on it. she'll also usually try to get sara to wrap whatever it is with like an ace bandage or KT tape or something and either ice it or put heat on it (whether or not sara actually agrees to do it depends on how bad the flare up pain is that time)

-after really really hard missions (both mentally and physically), sara and ava like to make themselves a little fort in their room to hide out in. they always have an excess of pillows and blankets stocked in their closet for this exact purpose, so they make their fort and there's a bunch of really soft and comfy blankets, pillows, and even a couple of stuffed animals, and then they get into their comfiest pajamas and hide away in their fort, cuddling and talking and maybe even watching a movie or something. it helps both of them a lot and keeps them from going too far down a rabbit hole in their heads. plus, it's nice to have a little fort in their room, which is already their safe space, so the fort becomes their Extra safe space, where it feels like nothing can ever hurt them

I like skincare too. What does your skincare routine involve?

Oh my goodness, it's a lot. I use mostly Truly Beauty products with a few other brands thrown in. But here's what my EXTENSIVE night time routine looks like.

I exfoliate my face (only twice a week, not every night). I use the Truly matcha scrub OR the Truly 24k gold black soap scrub.

Then like once or twice a week I'll some sort of hydrating mask. My favorites are Truly's Golden Leaf mask or Farmacy Beauty's Honey Potion mask!

Then I use the Truly CBD Jelly face wash every night. It's literally my favorite. And it's great for acne.

Then I tone with Truly CBD Jelly toner.

I use Ferver brand fermented Vitamin C day cream on my dark circles under my eyes and just a tiny bit on my acne scars.

Then I use Ferver brand fermented hyaluronic acid drops for an extra dose of moisture.

Then I use Truly CBD Jelly face serum. It's for acne and keeps mine at bay for the most part. I normally brush my teeth after this so the serum has time to really soak in.

Then I use Truly Purple Rain face oil. It has retinol in it, so if you're not worried about wrinkles, you probably wouldn't need this. But I'm boujee and I'm pushing 30 so I use it. I normally walk away after this for a good 15 minutes or so to let the oil soak in.

Then I use a thin layer of Truly glass skin serum over my whole face and let that soak in for a couple minutes.

Then I use either Neutrogena hydro boost water gel moisturizer OR Murad city skin overnight detox moisturizer. I switch these out pretty regularly.

AND THAT'S IT! I feel like I should've just made a video and posted it! I know it's a lot but I'm obsessed with skincare and it just makes me happy. Like if that's the one thing I do for myself in a day, then I'll be ok.

How My Self-Care Routines Have Changed For The Better Since Lockdown

Ever since lockdown began last March, I found myself with a lot of spare time that I hadn't realized even existed. I wanted to fill it with only positive acts. I wanted to build healthy routines and embrace the little things. It was important for me to make it part of my "escape" route; to do something to temporarily alleviate the pressure and take my mind off things.

I took this challenge that I presented to myself seriously. And, I also took a lot of pleasure in taking care of myself. One year later, everything has changed.

Embracing CBD

The CBD industry is alive, well, and definitely booming. For good reason, too. As someone who has health with anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, one of the most incredible moments in my life includes discovering the benefits that CBD and hemp have had on my mental and physical wellbeing.

Most of my career has been spent behind my laptop, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. However, my hands don’t feel the same, nor does my back. I love to use topical creams and balms on my hands when they start getting very stiff, or on the days they just plain hurt. I’ve been using No, Thank You’s A Cream For Relief and Qemp’s Relief CBD Cream. They especially help on those hard-to-sleep nights.

Little Indulgences

I find a lot of joy in the little things, and it’s made my outlook on just about everything so much more positive. I implement this kind of thinking into my beauty and skincare routines through my mix of high and low essentials, and luxury-like elements. I’ll turn my shower into a quickie spa while de-stressing and de-gunking pores, simultaneously.

Whether it’s by lighting an aromatherapy candle or just adding some essential oil into my shower, scent plays a huge role in my day. My nose takes note and leads my mood. I’ve especially been indulging in hand creams. I like to keep them at my desk and apply them throughout the day. I use my hands so often, and it’s kind of my way of treating them kindly.

Minimizing My Arsenal

When it comes to beauty, I turned to the idea of less being more. Prior to the pandemic, I was inundated with various products from countless new launches. Being one of the first people to be able to test out and review new beauty and skincare products is one of my most cherished career perks. However, there are so many new launches, it can be hard to keep up.

It became way too much product for one person to try, so I donated everything and minimized my entire arsenal to only include products that I love. Starting with just a few products that I’ve loved over the years reminded me of what I used to love about the simplicity of holding onto just a few key products.

Clean And Natural Beauty

I’ve been paying much more attention to the ingredients in my skincare routine than ever before. I had a bad experience when mixing two serums, and realized that my skin was irritated from using similar formulas with ingredients that didn’t play well together. It made me realize how important it is to know what exactly you are putting on your face, and that I didn’t need all of the products I was using.

Instead of putting on a full face of glam like I used to, I’ve taken a lot more pleasure in simple looks. Whether I’m getting ready for a Zoom meeting or heading out to run weekend errands, I’ve been keeping my beauty routine quite minimal. Thanks to my strict skincare routine (mild toner, exfoliating pads, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and sometimes a face oil for my dryer days), I’ve come to like and enjoy my natural skin.

My beauty routine has been minimal and focused. I usually always fill in sparse areas in my brows. They help frame my face. You can always see my dark circles, so on the bad days, I’ll pat on a medium coverage, brightening concealer to help me look more awake on camera. If I’m not wearing my glasses, I’ll pat a little highlighter on my cheeks as well, and call it a day.

Showing Myself Kindness

These days, it’s easy to forget to stop and slow down. We are so much more prone to stressors right now, and it’s important to treat ourselves with kindness. I like to use my routines to ‘treat’ myself with those much-needed self-love moments. Slow down and be more cognizant of these moments. I love to journal morning and night; it helps me get my thoughts together and reflect on my day.

For me, routines make me feel comfortable. I take joy in going through the motions with a little purpose.
